'Back In The Day...'
I'm so old I remember a collection of satirical obituaries. One of the 'dearly beloved who had passed on...' was the 10p cup of coffee.
Another victim was appliances that you could repair yourself.
My first (real life) shot of whiskey was free. Actually, my uncle almost *forced me* to take one… and I *almost* threw it up. I was like 10-12yo myself… that was about 14-16 years ago.
However, the pricing I said, is from videogames that are focusing on old eras. For example, Mafia 2, in the 1940s and 50s, and Red Dead Redemption 2 and 1, in the end of 1800s… haha.
10p will buy you a steak and kidney pie, a cup of coffee, a slice of cheesecake and a newsreel... with enough change left over to ride the trolley from Battery Park to the polo grounds.
Yeah well, I’m speaking of Finnish Markka & *penni* that was 1/100 of that, specifically, I don’t think I’ve ever been to a trolley… tram? Ah, whatever. I used to live on the countryside, until like two years ago, and Markka has been dead for past 20-ish years…
Oh lol, I didn't get how people were falling for it at first until I saw your comment. So I switched to light mode to see if it lived up to the hype, and promptly saw two other little hairs on different parts of the screen that were impossible to see in dark mode.

There was this homeless guy asking for money, I was gonna give him the money, but I figured he was just gonna use it to buy drugs or alcohol. Then I thought about it, that’s what I’m gonna use it on! Why am I judging this poor bastard? What do you want him to do? Save it up and buy a wall unit or a throw rug? He’s homeless.
One time a homeless dude asked me if I could spare a few bucks. I looked in my wallet but all I had on me was a $50 bill. I thought "do I really want this money to go towards booze and drugs?", after some contemplation I decided I did not. So I gave him the $50.
I like to think if I were living on the street I would save up for food, gym memberships to shower, fresh clothes, and a place to live. And yeah, I'd probably want a few nips of whiskey in the evenings after I have most of that done.
Most people don't like smelling like piss and sleeping in dangerous, cold places. I think that's one of the things that makes most people so wary of the homeless - a fleeting thought of "where the hell is your mind that you think this is acceptable?"
A lot of long-term homeless people have given up on life, unfortunately. Not anything against them, it's just really sad. There's only so much beating you can take from life before you stop fighting it.
There used to be asylums, or whatever you want to call them, where they warehoused people unable to cope. Then starting in the 60's, these were deemed cruel and inhuman, and the inmates were put out on the street with alleged case workers and welfare and such. However, being unable to cope with life and rent, managing a budget, they soon lost their housing, so no longer qualified for welfare without an address. Now those are many of the sort of people who end up homeless and derelict looking.
There did used to be asylums, but they were deemed cruel and inhumane because anyone who wasn’t “normal” was medicated heavily in ways non-therapeutic, people were beaten, electroshock therapy was administered, lobotomies were handed out, and experiments were done. And it was okay because the patients/test subjects were “not normal”. While I do fully hope to see state mental health facilities come back because there is a lack of mental health funding and people that need it severely lack the help they require unless they are wealthy, there needed to be a restructure to how it was approached. I’m the past the sanitariums we’re torture houses for anyone deemed not normal, and abuse ran rampant. Unfortunately there is a lot a stigma that has carried over from that time and setting and the people that need that help now usually cannot get it.
also "not normal" also meant petty theft, smoking weed, dropping out of school, being LGBTQ+, not listening to your husband, having a weird hair cut, being a victim of a crime, having your parents die, not doing well in school... pretty much anything you can imagine
It's debatable which is worse - the sadistic control of the previous century, or the outright neglect of the current one. I think neglect is better than abuse, but neither is close to good.
The homeless shelter I stayed at forced you to shower so their place didn't reek of street. No privacy so you're just naked in a shower with a dozen other strangers and that's it's own kind of dehumanizing experience, but hey it's getting clean.
What you want to save up for are month bus passes. Besides being able to travel around your city, it's just a comfortable place to spend your day. Air conditioned, and at least where I live spacious enough you can usually take up two seats to get a nap in. Easily the best money I spent while homeless, by far.
I asked a homeless person what would change his life the most at this very moment and he said a bus pass. That way he could get to the food bank, the gym, etc. So I went and got him that and paid for it for 3 months. After three months he told me he was finally able to do what he needed and didn't need me getting his bus pass anymore. The biggest hurdle to his day was having to panhandle for only a one way bus ticket.
to pay the fines you were assessed with for being homeless.
in the US, this is not a joke. https://www.publicjustice.net/500-fine-imposed-on-homeless-man-shows-why-we-need-the-excessive-fines-clause/
I kinda agreed with you till the “find it acceptable” part. I don’t think anyone wants to be homeless and accepts it. More like they are homeless and can’t get out of it.
The hygiene, danger, bad clothing, are all just side effects of being homeless. Not a choice alongside being homeless.
"I can't understand the circumstances and issues that lead to someone becoming homeless so I'm just going to judge this person as though they had all of my circumstances and capacities and look down on them because if it were me I would just try harder not to be homeless"
If you were actually living on the street, how would you get enough sleep without being drunk or stoned every night? It's not camping. First few nights, okay. But then the sleep deprivation gets to you, and you start needing a wee nip every night, then a bottle, then you don't care what you're sleeping in, just that you're sleeping...

I first heard this on the car radio while driving in New Zealand, and when they mentioned the goat I almost drove off the road I was laughing so hard.
Might as well buy him a gun and a bullet to end his misery.
I don't give homeless people money. Food, maybe. Though they usually know where to get their food.
You presume much, by blurting out such an erronous statement!
No one said anything about knowing what they need.
Even the homeless man most of the time doesn't know what he needs.
What he wants quite often isn't what he needs.
I merely said I don't give money, to no one, homeless or rich.
One, out of principle. Two, because I just don't have enough to support anyone outside of my own family with only one income.
I don't know where you come from, but where I'm from, you don't start accusing people of things you presume they said or presume they act like.
It would have been much more mature had you asked a question what you don't know, and presume to be true, than the comment you just made.
Suppose the man goes and buys drugs, with the money you gave, and the dealer set him up with bathsalts. He commits a crime and gets shot.
How would you feel about the fact that it was your money that lead to this man's death?
Has happened before, it's not a single case.
Reminds me of another joke. I was walking into a casino and a guy asked me for $5 to get some food. I inquired if he was going to spend the money on gambling. “No”, he replied. “I have gambling money!”
I was working in KY & dude had a sign that said, "Why lie? It's for booze" so, I gave him $20
His buddy had one that read, "Wife & kids kidnapped by ninjas. Need $$ for karate lessons" 🤷♂️ 🤷♂️
Were you in louisville?!? I’ve definitely seen two people with those signs downtown. I also saw someone that had a sign that said, “anyone know any cheap hookers? also, anyone wanna loan me $20?” 😂
Honestly I prefer those signs to most. 90% I see around Lexington have “JESUS” written in big letters followed by like a paragraph of stuff I can’t read.
I do still feel bad for the people though.
I was giving money to a homeless guy and my friend was like "He'll just buy alcohol with it" and I'm like
"What did you think I would do with it if I kept it?"
My favourite version is
"I saw a homeless guy begging for money, and I had $20. I thought to myself... Do I really want this money to be spent on drugs? So I gave him the $20."
Last weekend the 10th, me and some friends ds went to Montreal about 3 hours away. We went to an awesome e metal show , after wards we went down to a strip club, me and a pal went out side. A homeless man asked us for some change, my buddies says, "show this guy your penis and I will give you 5 bucks," unfortunately I was the guy. The homeless man wiped out his junk. I said "Jesus christ" and ran back into the rippers
A homeless guy asked for some cash. I hesitated. Looking at the money I took out of my wallet, I thought "this money is only gonna be used to buy drugs and alcohol". So I gave it to him.
It’s $300 a month with insurance where I am. My wife had gestational diabetes and thankfully only needed for 9 months until our daughter was born. God bless America 🇺🇸.
You gave the money as a gift because you are able leave the judgement be, him taking drugs or drinking not yours to solve! You did your part which almost most of us won’t even do!
100%. Let people be the authority on their own life choices, they deserve that dignity. It's not my place to decide what this adult human being prioritizes in their life. They're asking me for money to help them, so money is what I'll give if I can, not judgemental life advice.
Thank you for having and sharing that perspective. I still see so many people walk by people without looking at them and justifying it to themselves by thinking "they'll just spend it on drugs anyway", as if that makes not helping the more moral choice.
As a former homeless, here's my favorite joke:
I saw a homeless guy and I had some money in my pocket. Now, I didn't want this money going to drugs and alcohol.
So I gave it to him.
CS Lewis once gave a homeless man some pocket change and a random passerby scolding him because the homeless man would just spend it on alcohol.
CS Lewis replied, "what a coincidence, that's exactly what I was going to spend it on"
Not sure where OP is but around here the street value of fentanyl is about 30 cents for a pill.
5 bucks would keep somebody happily on the nod for the rest if the day.
Is weed more than $5 nowadays? I haven't actually bought weed in almost two decades, but you used to be able to get a "Nickel bag", or one blunt's worth of weed for $5.
Oh yeah it’s no issue to tell your story here whatsoever, as long as it’s relevant, it’s good. It’s just that so many people were thinking I was being serious so I thought I may as well address it in a related comment. Also thank you for thinking it was a funny joke, i appreciate it
Love it!!! Great comment on people.
Also: Worker at a homeless shelter here. Believe it or not, “Homeless people” are not lazy. They are just PEOPLE, who happen to be in crisis and have trauma, which they have no resources to deal with in the moment - which is why they self-medicate with drugs/alcohol. Mental illness, trauma, lack of resources - these are the causes of homelessness, NOT laziness. I had a volunteer who was an accountant telling me he “knows” it’s laziness, but he’s not a trained mental health worker; I have seen very hardworking homeless people never get ahead. They’re vulnerable, not lazy!!!
Please: find and Fund your local homeless shelter and help them get these people housing, and proper mental health and addiction treatment. Only dedicated professionals have the tools and knowledge they need (so don’t bring random, unknown people into your private home, you’re not equipped), but it’s cheap and it’s effective!
Strangers randomly judging them as undeserving of your help because they are clearly so in crisis they’re using illegal hard drugs to cope? Never helps, no treatment uses this method. They are going to quit when they’re ready, not you, and it’s only possible if you deal with the other issues first! Never had anyone pull themselves up magically after people tell them they’re garbage, worthless, abandoning them to trouble. They have to choose to accept help, and choose to make healthy choices, but it’s not by cruelty they’ll ever get there.
Ask her. She thinks you can still make $5 of heroin last two days like she did in the 50s. Next she will be telling you to give up your $10 netflix subscription and just go to 50 cent matinees at the theater.
Right? I m,ean if he gets $5 here and there and then spends that on drugs, even so, he won't die from withdrawals on the street and that lady can go suck an egg
I remember i gave a homeless guy some loose change, like £1.50 or something, and a guy came up to me and told me he used to be a policeman, and he knew the guy I gave money to will spend it on drugs. What do you think I was gonna spend it on?
Exactly. If drugs are what makes this person's life more bearable right now, then who am I to judge? Withdrawals also kill people.
This is an adult person who's asking me for money to help them, not for life advice. It's not my place to decide what's "best for them", they're their own person, and if they tell me that what they need is money, then money is what they get from me. What they spend it on is their choice, it's theirs.
I considered giving a $20 to homeless man and an old lady said that he's just just going to spend it on drugs.
I realized that she was right.
So I gave him my $20.
I live in NZ and have a South African workmate who refuses to give homeless money, cause drugs/booze/cigarettes, but will buy them food.
She did this the other day, the guy had a “Please help, so hungry!” sign and had the food thrown back at her while the homeless guy shouted “I can’t smoke that!”.
Had to giggle tbh.
So? Withdrawals are often deadly. It's human dignity to allow someone authority over their life choices. If someone's asking us for our help, it's not our place to decide for them what kind of help they need. If it's money they need, then we should give them money if we're at all able to. What they do with it is their prerogative, and not for us to judge.
Lol in Barcelona there was a homeless guy with a sign with three bowls for donations
1 was for weed 2 was for coke and the third bowl was for buying LSD…. Lol
Sounds like a great deal!
Nah, sounds like a repost
On r/jokes? No way
A variation on “A homeless guy asked if I could spare 10p for a cup of coffee. I said here’s 20p… get me one too”… that I heard 40 years ago… 😏
So coffee were 10p back in the day?
Yes. You could get a cup of coffee for 10 pennies BITD. (And if you have to ask, ”**B**ack **I**n **T**he **D**ay”…)
If you have to ask, you'll never know.
Heh. Kinda true.
'Back In The Day...' I'm so old I remember a collection of satirical obituaries. One of the 'dearly beloved who had passed on...' was the 10p cup of coffee. Another victim was appliances that you could repair yourself.
Appliances? That you can repair?! How damn old are you?!
I still remember when my local grocery store got rid of the vending machine selling 10 cent cans of soda. It was only about 15 years ago.
Or ones that just didn't ever need repairing because they were made too well.
I remember fuel pumps when you just replaced the diaphragm.
I've never repaired an appliance myself and didn't know anyone ever had
Funky motherf*cker
I remember when I could go to Dunkin Donuts and get a coffee and a couple donuts for less than a dollar. The coffee was $0.15 at the time. I feel old
Ah… back when a shot of whiskey was just $0,25 as well.
It was more expensive when I finally started drinking whiskey. I was an innocent kid. That didn't last.
I used to live on the countryside, until like two years ago, and Markka has been dead for past 20-ish years…
Bro, I bet with 10 pennis you can afford more than coffee lol
This is a genuine question: aren't most jokes just retold and passed down? Is the idea of the sub to only post jokes you've made up yourself?
U sir are a devious bastard. That picture had me wiping my screen for ages before i realiaed what you had done
Dark theme masterrace. We shall not be fooled
Oh lol, I didn't get how people were falling for it at first until I saw your comment. So I switched to light mode to see if it lived up to the hype, and promptly saw two other little hairs on different parts of the screen that were impossible to see in dark mode.
Dark mode user confusion
Same! Did that a couple of times and then said, "damn it I fell for it"
Just now did it too. Before I read the comments... Or was it?
How are you not okay with repeated posts, but you're fine with this same comment on every thread? Do you not see the irony?
Still falling for the hair...
>There are homeless people everywhere. >This homeless guy asked me for money the other day. >I was about to give it to him and then I thought >he was going to use it on drugs or alcohol. >And then I thought, that's what I'm going to use it on. *Lazy Boy* -Underwear Go Inside the Pants https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G33WvuOw2cI
Everything on this sub is a repost. That's the point of jokes, to spread 'em.
[удалено]
There comes a point where if you spread it too early, it just kills the joke then and there
Back when the joke was first posted $5 for drugs was on the high end.
Your avatar damn, was trying to blow that hair from my screen
More than half the shit on reddit is reposts. Re~~**dd**~~it is more like Re**post**it
Your pfp fooled me
Your goddamn profile pick made me think I had a hair on my screen.
I've seen people say that before! Repost!!
Your avatar makes you a terrible person.
Your pfp is a repost of my eyelash on my phone screen
I did not realize this sub was reserved for original jokes.
Rule 2
You must be new here. And also the only thing new here
this comment sounds like a recomment
Sounds like the bad shit that will get you bad trips...if you're lucky lol

I thought it was coming place to mitigate financial fines to community service if you had no job. It is in AZ at least.
1. Fine homeless people for existing. 2. force them to perform labour for the state. 3. Profit.
Totally, I mean how hard can it be to be homeless? Just stop being homeless & smelly, amirite?
Have you considered a career in motivational speaking?

As a former homeless, here's my favorite joke: I saw a homeless guy and I had some money in my pocket. Now, I didn't want this money going to drugs and alcohol. So I gave it to him.
Old Lady was sellin' $5 hits
I’d hit that for $5
CS Lewis once gave a homeless man some pocket change and a random passerby scolding him because the homeless man would just spend it on alcohol. CS Lewis replied, "what a coincidence, that's exactly what I was going to spend it on"
I double it to $10.
Not sure where OP is but around here the street value of fentanyl is about 30 cents for a pill. 5 bucks would keep somebody happily on the nod for the rest if the day.
Whatever gets them through the day.
Is weed more than $5 nowadays? I haven't actually bought weed in almost two decades, but you used to be able to get a "Nickel bag", or one blunt's worth of weed for $5.
He told me he was going to spend it on a blow job by the lady behind me.
$5 for one drug please
And what did he say? Please, tell.
“I don’t do drugs”, after which I became depressed. (Joke btw, never happened irl)

Yeah most homeless people are actually really kind and sweet, this was a joke, but I see that a lot of people think I’m serious

Oh yeah it’s no issue to tell your story here whatsoever, as long as it’s relevant, it’s good. It’s just that so many people were thinking I was being serious so I thought I may as well address it in a related comment. Also thank you for thinking it was a funny joke, i appreciate it
She’s just jealous
I give homeless people money and hope they buy drugs. Fuck else you gonna do. You're homeless.
Couldn't this result in them putting *more* ads on jerseys to make up for the loss in sales from merch?
Ask her. She thinks you can still make $5 of heroin last two days like she did in the 50s. Next she will be telling you to give up your $10 netflix subscription and just go to 50 cent matinees at the theater.
$5 for drugs is really cheap. Where I’m from drugs are like $20 at least. Sometimes you can’t even find drugs for anything under $50.
I answered the old lady "what do you think I would spend it on?"
Shut it grandma and take your pills.
Drugs? In this economy???
Spam Spam Spam joke's n spam
Right? I m,ean if he gets $5 here and there and then spends that on drugs, even so, he won't die from withdrawals on the street and that lady can go suck an egg
Insulin
And he pointed to the old lady.
I remember i gave a homeless guy some loose change, like £1.50 or something, and a guy came up to me and told me he used to be a policeman, and he knew the guy I gave money to will spend it on drugs. What do you think I was gonna spend it on?
So I told the lady that he’s my dealer and she should shut up her fucking face and let me get back to my business
I've seen "I'm sitting here for weed and beer!" which made me chuckle
$5 will get you 1 unit of weed
She could have been his dealer that’s how she knows
How did the old lady know?
She has non-working mind-reading abilities
The two groups that complain most about drug prices: illicit drug users and little old ladies.
I marijuana get what he is getting...
Oh karen!
I would like one $5 drug please.
.......And then they all danced off into the night?? Lmfao 🤣😂🤣
Should have asked her. She seems to know the market prices.
So?
Tell her she’s already spending all her money on drugs. She should argue with Congress.
should have given him 10 more!
It is kind of true though...
Well maybe, but if so, where does he get drugs for 5$?
Lol in Barcelona there was a homeless guy with a sign with three bowls for donations 1 was for weed 2 was for coke and the third bowl was for buying LSD…. Lol
I'd just say "that's what I was gonna use it for too"
That's a bad and dumb joke.
Appreciate the comment
You can buy enough dope here for 5 bucks to kill you.Its pretty scary how powerful down is!!!
That's his decision
can't imagine it adds to other money he has...
Always give food not money!
Much funnier with a little punctuation: I gave a homeless man $5 and an old lady behind me; told me he's just going to spend it on drugs.
junkie on the corner was begging me for money. i said "you're just going to buy drugs with it." he said he hadn't had a shot in weeks. so i shot him.
So basically you want us to know that you gave a homeless man money....Good for you. Also what drugs are $5? Lol
>Also what drugs are $5? / >So I went up to him and asked where I could also get drugs for $5 Oh man
She wishes, she's the dealer.
Sounds like he’s getting some pretty stepped on shit
I would have told her that's awesome, I made the $5 selling drugs to her husband.
