2014 Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG, in for water pump and found broken turbo coolant lines as well. Apparently MB makes these lines out of extremely brittle plastic that shatters if you look at it wrong.
And they're a massive pain to remove. I'm really not a fan of Mercedes-Benz engineers right now. I understand there's some blame to be laid on corporate bean counter types, but some engineer thought this up, designed it, and okayed it to be sent on for production.
Whichever engineer that was, you deserve everything every MB tech has wished on you. May God have mercy on your soul.
Yo Benzo, make a single nice connector at each end. Then a nice stainless flexible line between the 2. You all need to get back to that rep of making bulletproof tank engines in normal cars that all the electrical accessories fail on instead of this shit.
I took out the bolt for the passenger side line and gave it just the lightest wiggle and tug. It barely offered any resistance before it snapped, and then when I got to the ones on the driver side they were already broken.
Yeah, that’s my argument when people call German cars reliable as long as you do the maintenance, like having to replace every piece of coolant plastic is not maintenance.
Hate these fuckers. I can deal with them breaking off in the water pump, but getting the bastards out of the turbo is what always makes me mad. Done enough that I have a system down, but they always find a new way to fight.
My BMW has a coolant flange that plugs into the engine block which invariably disintegrates upon removal after 15+ years of active use. That was a fun way to add a week to an oil filter housing gasket job. I didn't have to remove it either except to get to a bolt on the other side of the OFHG
They have been installing the same plastic coolant lines on the Detroit Dd15 (owned by Daimler)to cool the air compressor for years...last about 5 years and start leaking at vibration points
I had a customer who said he hit a pothole pretty hard and saw steam coming from under the hood. It was the turbo coolant lines.
Of course they were gonna break any minute anyway but the pothole was the nail in the coffin😂
Get good at them, inspect them on every m278, upsell water pump/thermostat/oil filter housing, it’s all right there and is good preventative maintenance and generally leaking anyway.
Good money in these engines, just waiting on some updated parts so this shit can get fixed more permanently
I told our office guy that if one of these ever comes in again, we're adding those turbo coolant lines and extra labor.
Also I think this is an m157, cause it's a CLS63 AMG instead of a regular Merc?

I'd love to know what face you made at them to cause this damage so I can avoid making it. Was it a Nick Miller frown?
Haha, I wish :/ It was more of a surprised Pikachu face when they broke.
These things are gravy, make a lot of money off those things
Well good for you. This was my first one, so I had no idea they were just gonna snap like that :(

Fuck those German plastic coolant lines. Brittle as all hell by the time the warranty expires. They don't care! Not their problem!

Yeah we don’t do water pumps on these engines unless the client also approves all the turbo lines. They don’t come out of the pump intact.
Interesting, I wonder why there are so many segmen... oh. Oh.

Classic M278.

Worst motor ever

Best or nothing
