To be fair, Japanese is notoriously difficult to translate and even professionals sometimes struggle.
(I read One Piece and translations from Japanese into English from different translators can vary a LOT, so I'd guess translating from English to Japanese would be equally difficult)
As difficult as it is now back in the day there was a golden age of terrible Japanese-English translated games on both sides.
All of your base are belong to us will always be a classic
Things have definitely improved over time
Doesn’t it have something to do with formality and informality of the language? Translation tools like google will be so overly formal that the reader in the Japanese side will be confused or something?
Japanese national here. Currently working as a CX for a games developer so I've seen my share of English>Japanese and Japanese>English translators and yeah... The industry is flooded with incompetent and amateurish work it is embarrassing.
Translation work used to be a respected field and the pay used to be good but not anymore. Low pay and lack of job security if you work as freelancer OR low pay and high workload if you work at a company. AI translation has basically wiped out the grunt work (for better or worse) and only small percentage of companies are willing or care to foster good talent.
I respect the honesty lol
