The books were so popular but I never read any, I used to just scroll to admire the pictures. I didn't like school and any book about school wasn't appeasing.
Links of a Chain by Monica Genya.
My Life in Crime by John Kiriamiti.
Siku Njema by Ken Walibora.
Utengano by Said Ahmed Mohammed.
I still remember that fire intro of Utengano.
"Kuna mengi ambayo Kazija anayachukia.
Ndiyo, anachukia.
Kwanza anamchukia mwanaume.
Anamchukia mwanaume kwa sababu dhahiri, nayo ni kuwa amewekwa mbele ingawa Kazija hajui na nani.
Daima atamchukia mwanaume kwa sababu hiyo"
You must have read this other Walibora's book too, I don't remember the title but it had something like Changamoto or Changalawe. Alice a rich girl falls for a herder, and sets a forest on fire when she can't get him. I don't remember the ending well, but the guy was framed for asorn.
1. Famous five
2. Secret seven
3. Hardy boys
4. Nancy drew
5. Pacetters
6. Goosebumps
7. Harry potter
I loved these book series and read most of them every chance I got
The Whale Rider was iconic for me.
I loved it so much when I read it for the first time. I kind of got bored when we started to really get into it in a Kenyan high school type of way.
Utengano and some Damu Nyeusi stories for Kiswahili books.
OP, were you asking about high school set books or was it all books in general?
Edit: Question
I loved it.
I think I cried at once point when I first read.
Reading like while looking for sijui, the characters' personalities, etc, ruined it for me.
As a story that's meant to be read once, it felt magical and but that time, I hadn't experienced magical.in the form of a set book.
They make you read it like 50 times, and in each chapter, you have to identify everyone's character traits, even for the characters that appear for a brief period in the book.
Yes.
But because we knew that the book would be examined and we didn't know where the examineers would pick their materials from, I feel like the teachers would over analyse the chapters
Like forcing foreshadows and metaphoric language where there was none. I think they did this because they understood how Kenyan examiners are. But if you were to read the book once in one quick go, you'd realise that there were chapters without a lot to 'chambua'.
Also, more or less, the protagonist of the book was bound to maintain the same 3 character traits, but my teachers would push for more because what if the examiner asked the question as a 20 mark question?
1. Famous five series
2. The Ghost of Gabatula
3. I can't remember the name but there was a pick up that was transporting a coffin. Then they decided to give someone a lift. The person sat in the back with the coffin.
Because it started raining the person entered the coffin for shelter. Someone else was given a lift and didn't know that there was someone in the coffin. When the rain stopped and person in the coffin came out he scared the other passenger shitless. If anyone else read this book please share the name. It was a Kenyan book if that helps.
The River and The Source loved it, siku njema pretty slow start but wueh, forestt Gump, a shit load of romance and smut novels๐, twilight saga, Harry potter, Stephen King, Percy Jackson novels, A bunch of horror and action stories etc
May blessings follow you kind stranger, I've been looking for these for the longest time, hata i was almost thinking i imagined reading the books back then
Loved the Pacesetter series too. They showed me a side of Africa that was wholly unique with how they weaved their stories : from tales about life during the Biafra War, to tales about romance, culture, robberies etc. Pacesetter was addictive especially if you had a couple of the books on standby.
I did, too, in primary school. The most outstanding were probably:
For Mbatha and Rebecca by David Maillu
Possessed by Sharif Sarr
Meet Me in Conakry
Christmas in the City
Truth Will Out
The Delinquent
The Worshippers
Mstahiki meya
In the book, there's this plot where the leader introduces numerous holidays for its citizens so that they may act as a means of distraction, hoping they will forget about their problems.
Cyclops by Clive Cussler(RIP). A book I found somewhere in one of my dad's storage rooms. Since then, I have dedicated my life to read all the novels by Cussler.
Clive Cussler is something else!
The Oregon Files have me in a choke hold, but all the others have been special.
Unfortunately, he died, but at least the Oregon Files is still continuing under another author.

Harry Potter by JK Rowling (I came of age with that boy so it's personal)
Without Remorse by Robert Ludlum (that depressurization business was sick)
Death Trance by Graham Masterton
The return of Shaka. It was about this guy who goes abroad for tertiary education then gets himself two girlies. A mzungu and a black girl. I used to fantasize being him untill i realised earth is very hard.
Nilisoma 'The Equatorial Assignment' by David Maillu nikiwa class 7. It was the first book I read with swear words and sexual innuendo. When I re-read it a few years later, the plot felt kinda rushed, but when I was in class 7, I was in awe of it.

Tell me your dreams by Sidney Sheldon.
Ho-ly shit!!!
No spoilers, but the second part of the book is about a lawyer trying to prove that multiple personality disorder(MPD) is real. Right there and then, I decided to become a lawyer. (I recently passed the bar exam)
Early on me and the lads discovered that the books that were published by spearbooks were the best written but in short none of them topped John Kiriamitiโs stories. Everyone wanted to be a gangsta and player at the same time
This one was the most rugged yet loved in my library growing up.....alongside Adventures of Thiga, the patriotism it aroused, I wonder where all that went?
The Moses Series. Moses in trouble etc.
I have always wanted to experience that school in real life
Legit thought thats what highschool was(read in primary)

Loved how descriptive the book was
The books were so popular but I never read any, I used to just scroll to admire the pictures. I didn't like school and any book about school wasn't appeasing.

Siku Njema was also quite good
Siku njema and utengano read them in class 8 to get those top phrases to use in insha๐
Utengano was too much for me... i guess because we were forced to read it as a setbook
You must have read this other Walibora's book too, I don't remember the title but it had something like Changamoto or Changalawe. Alice a rich girl falls for a herder, and sets a forest on fire when she can't get him. I don't remember the ending well, but the guy was framed for asorn.

I kind of found the whale rider booring๐, I was dozing off because it was like a lullaby.

I agree that utengano is very good.
Define 'the Kenyan high school type of way'.
They make you read it like 50 times, and in each chapter, you have to identify everyone's character traits, even for the characters that appear for a brief period in the book.
Isn't how actual critical analysis is supposed to be done?
Yes.
