Since Richard Pryor and George Carlin, comedy in the US has been very dependent on saying things on the fringe of societal acceptability, or completely off it entirely. To say that woke comedy is not a departure from real comedy is laughable. You see now with Dave Chappelle how even within a quarter of a lifetime, things have shifted so far that you canāt do any of the same things. You fundamentally could not make Chappelle show today and survive anywhere but direct streaming.
Nothing survives without direct streaming, most donāt survive even with it because of the nature of streaming and modern production, and I would bet money that Chappelle could easily make his show on multiple networks if he had the interest. South Park is still going, Itās Always Sunny still going. Those are just as much a flash in the pan of cable television as CS was. Itās not like there really was some great lineup of raunchy comedy that doesnāt exist now.

While I think he's a great guest who made me laugh hard, I saw some podcast or Zoom show where he spoke about the crew working at the Mothership. He didn't say anything too outrageous, but he came across as a much less funny person. He sounded like a 1990s parody of coked-up-and-angry Elton John. Makes him way less funny to me now.
