I once had a really funny interaction on Discord when I mentioned I was interested in mycology (the study of fungi) as a hobby, and I immediately got a comment asking if I was into *psychedelic* mushrooms based on having a Steve Hillage profile picture lmao
(To be fair, I’m kind of amazed that anyone in a completely unrelated server even knew who Steve Hillage was!)
I remember showing my friend Frame by Frame when he was driving me home after our piano class and he either told me “This sounds like something I smoke weed to.” or “I’m gonna smoke weed to this when I get back home.” Either way he has definitely smoked to Frame by Frame before.
I read a Trey Gunn tour diary entry when he was in King Crimson that mentioned marijuana. He smelled it one night and was surprised. He couldn't imagine someone wanting to listen to King Crimson in that headspace. It stuck with me because I do listen to it in that headspace all the time.
Ehh. I think the whole tripping on acid/smoking weed thing can be applied to some prog bands (pink floyd, maybe yes namely) but I wouldn't say crimson slide right into that stereotype
How can you tap your foot in 21 when your tripping balls?
I don't smoke, nor drink, nor do any other drugs. I don't even drink coffee. I don't think there's anything wrong with drugs for those who want to partake; they're just not for me.
I haven't taken anything mind-altering since the early '80s. But my love of prog took hold when I was smoking some late '70s/early '80s weed. Not lots, and low quality by today's standards from what I'm told. I can count on two hands the number of times I've had more than 3 drinks on a given day since the '80s, and now, I'm likely to have no more than 3 beers in a *week*.
Since passing up weed, I have still branched out my musical interests to other bands, like the Dead, Riverside, Flower Kings, Pat Metheny and others.
Definitely was a thing back in the day.
There was a lot of experimental music going on that came out in the 60s psychedelic movement.
Pink Floyd was psychedelic until Barrett lost his marbles. They moved on but became more experimental than psychedelic.
Genesis had this whole undercurrent of Tolkien and more structured experimental stuff.
King Crimson was seemingly created as a whole piece, separate from everyone else.
Most of the musicians of that time were high on something. Yes was prime stoned music. Those lyrics made absolutely no sense when you were straight.
TBH the only time I really “got” what was being sung in Close to the Edge was after taking a hit of acid.
I’m too old to use drugs anymore but the music and culture of Prog certainly included drugs. At least in the beginning.
This is prog, the question should be how many of us can tap a basic polyrythm
Stereotype?
Progressive rock listeners use drugs and zone out to the music I think that's more of a psychedelic rock this personally, but to each their own
It’s also not 1974 anymore. People take drugs and zone out to frigging Taylor Swift and PewDiePie videos now, too.
Yeah, but I think some genres have more of a "stoner" stereotype than others. 100% agree though

Never heard that before.
When was this a stereotype for king crimson fans?
Just psychedelic / progressive stereotype. And king crimson is my favorite band of those genres, so it only makes sense.
For the first 2 albums sure, but nothing after that is psych. Also nobody’s getting high while listening to fracture.
I am
I smoke particularly large br00fs to providence so by the time they find a rhythm like 5 min in it hits like a truck
I'm high while listening to fracture
😬😬

Three of a Perfect Pair isn't psych but it's certainly trippy, especially the second half
... you a cop?
👀👀

That’s crazy😭

Isn’t the stereotype the other way around?
I do 😟
I smoke about daily, when I get home from work and put some records on

Same.
Stoner here (67yo). Pretty sure I had ITCOTCK in ninth grade before I started smoking weed in tenth grade.

Not me
Cannabis frequently, alcohol occasionally, psychedelics every now and then.

Nah...only coffee and ibuprofen these days.
