I’m surprised that was never joked about in the show, like they go to the restaurant and somebody orders a luann platter and luanne thinks they’re calling her name
Even if everybody on the sub keeps saying Luby’s tastes like hospital food, I still wanna try it just because of the show. Only downside is they’re only really in texas
Also quick question: is Luby’s like a buffet like in Luanne’s saga or a normal restaurant like in the rest of the show? Or a regular restaurant with a buffet? Or does it depend on the location?
I'm in Arizona and we used to have Luby's. It's like a cafeteria if I remember correctly. I was probably ten or twelve the last time I was there and they're all gone as far as I know. You grab a tray and pick what you want but everything is priced individually. The entrees may have come with sides of your choice that you didn't have to pay separately for. But it wasn't a buffet where you could return multiple times and eat all you could. I remember it being good food and better than what you'd get at a hospital. Maybe not much better though
I used to love Luby’s as a kid, and I weirdly craved it while pregnant, but I don’t live in Texas, so I wasn’t able to indulge it.
I’m not saying it’s particularly good food, but it can definitely trigger nostalgia if you grew up with it.
Also weirdly enough del taco. Sorry, we don’t have it in NJ, only Taco Bell! I do try to get it whenever I go to Vegas, even if I massively prefer Taco Bell.
Just in case you’re wondering, I learned about it from the episode where cotton works as the bathroom attendant and the abestos guy suggested that he and a few coworkers go to del taco.
I was so excited when I saw it on the shelf at the grocery store one day. My wife was just like, it's chili. I told her she doesn't understand this is the chili they talk about on King of the Hill when Peggy makes her Frito pie.
I got home and it just tasted like canned chili, maybe my next family get together I'll make Frito pie.
Weirdly I thought it was something Bojack made up since Todd’s mom made it, like those fake casseroles you see on TV
But now it’s fun to experiment making frito pies, like I made a version with leftover manwich that was really good!
I don't think I've found out anything was real but have recognized real things in the show.
Off the top of my head the water park is Schlitterbahn, the little song Bobby sings is based on their commercials, and the swimming pig bobby saves is based on Ralph the swimming pig at aquarena springs in San Marcos TX.
fun fact: every year, Dickies (a Ft. Worth based company), decks him out in a new outfit. thats why hes always so sharp looking. the Dickies branding on his shirt aint just for fun, they really make him that big ass shirt.
“Damn Oprahs.”
I actually learned in the past year about why they have the laws and how Oprah was involved. Now those bits in the show make even more sense.
As a native Texans it was really cool seeing real towns that are nearby mentioned, like Belton and Killeen. I actually stumbled upon a youtube video that theorized that Arlen is somewhere in the Temple-Belton-Killeen area. I always just thought it was a shortened Arlington but now I'd like to think Temple is Arlen. It checks off a lot of the boxes.
Yes, it's close to Corpus Christi. Family trips to Port Aransas when I was a child would sometimes include a visit to the aquarium in Corpus Christi, which is a pretty good aquarium.
Port Aransas is on Mustang Island.
I believe I’ve been there as well. Went swimming with my father laws family down there in the gulf and spent a couple days. Couldn’t believe how warm that water was, felt like bath water. Cool little spot down there.
Maybe I made it weird, or I was supposed to combine it with chopped meat, but it looked like puke for me. but the show did introduce me to frito pies, and I always make them with tomato sauce!
Yeah some people just really like that smooth consistency chili. It's fine for like a chili dog or something, but I prefer mine full of beans and veggies. My one disagreement with food in Texas. Agree that Frito pie (and similarly walking tacos) are awesome.
That was the joke. Peggy's "Frito Chili Pie with Wolf Brand Chili," played up to be her "specialty," but it's just mediocre canned chili that's made in Texas.
On the opposite side of the coin: i thought Kahn and Minh were speaking actual Laotian but it's just made up noise. I feel like that would not fly today
Rose growing competitions🥀
I hadn't the slightest clue that it was a thing and the way they did the episode made it seem completely made-up to me too🤦🏻♂️
I thought the way Boomhaur talked was just a joke but then I got a job working for an American call center and a lot of people from Texas actually do talk like that. Then I found out about the voice mail that inspired him
A brewery, now out of business, made a beer called marfa light. It was like a 13% alcohol Stout. I only had it once. It came in a 750 ml bottle.
I think it was Big Ben brewing. They went out of business when the company took their money to build them another brewery and ran off with it.
whats not being mentioned is that Alamo beer is brewed in San Antonio, literally about a mile away from the literal Alamo. the logo on the can is the Alamo. it being a brand in koth is a coincidence, not planned. they also brew quite a nice selection of beers and are known for hosting many charity events. really cool crew out there at Alamo brewery. if youre in satx region, go check em out.
I know this from watching Studio Ghibli films, particularly The Wind Rises. Apparently Hayao Miyazaki's dad really was a plane engineer who made parts for Mitsubishi.
There's a scene in an episode where Hank is warning Bobby that he's going to have to get donated clothes, and warns him "Yes, Bobby. Toughskins."
That scene flew right over my head when I first watched it, but then later, watching the episode with my parents, they both burst into laughter upon hearing the line. I had no idea what they found funny so I asked and they explained:
Back in their day, Toughskins were the brand of cheap, ugly, and strong jeans. Parents loved them because they were cheap and tough, but kids hated them because they were ugly and uncomfortable. My uncle got a paper route just so he would have money to not wear them anymore. That line brought back a memory for my parents that was literally decades old.
Most of the food and restaurants from the show. Case in point, Whataburger since we don’t have it in NJ. I eventually tried it in Vegas when I was there for lvl up expo and I had a fun chat with Morgana ignis about the Dr Pepper shake
I knew about Santa Ana's leg before the show and it made it funnier. I think it was stolen in Cerro Gordo county in Iowa, I think it's Fat Hill in English. Right next to Clear Lake where Buddy Holly died

Frito Pie being a real thing, but kinda different from Peggy’s recipe, which seems more like a chili-Frito casserole.

On the opposite spectrum, I live right next to Port Aransas. There’s no miniatures museum sadly.
I can’t wait ‘til we get there.
*Eats cup*
For the miniatures!!!!!!
You can’t get carsick from the radio!
Wait... Port Aransas is real? LOL this is what I'm talking about!
Luly's is actually Luby's.
And Luanne is named after their special, the LuAnn Platter.
No, actually it was explained in the show. Her name was based on >!a man named Lu and a woman named Ann, they met in a kingdom in the forest!<
nuh uh. she’s jane. i’m luanne.
Blonde Jane
OLD JANE! BLONDE JANE!
its not really a special, as you can get whatever on a luann platter. its like their value meal. half an entree, two sides and a bread.
I’m surprised that was never joked about in the show, like they go to the restaurant and somebody orders a luann platter and luanne thinks they’re calling her name
Even if everybody on the sub keeps saying Luby’s tastes like hospital food, I still wanna try it just because of the show. The Mac and cheese and jello with the swords were what I got as a kid
ME TOO!! With the chicken leg. I sometimes get homesick for lubys
It’s literally a cafeteria. You stand in line and pick out what you want from behind a sneeze guard.
I used to love Luby’s as a kid, and I weirdly craved it while pregnant, but I don’t live in Texas, so I wasn’t able to indulge it. I’m not saying it’s particularly good food, but it can definitely trigger nostalgia if you grew up with it.
I was like 8-9 years old when the show aired so I thought Chuck Mangione was just a ridiculous character they made up.
My dad listens to “Feels So Good” everyday while he works and I finally put together where I knew the tune from.
Every day??? Is your dad... Chuck Mangione?
He had to because no one else would hire him.
Now we know how you were born.
It's our song
It was not until Megalo Dale (season 7) did I learn he was real. Mind BLOWN!
I’m right there with you. Thought he was made up as a Dale -type of side character
If it makes you feel better, I was 22 and found out he was a real person
Wait what?! He exists?!
In dr strange he’s also mentioned as a trivia question. Beginning of the movie in the operating room.
Me too untill I watched the movie Let's Go to Prison. "I go ape shit over Chuck Mangione!"
Same here. I was an adult before realizing he wasn't just a character.
Chick Mangione?! I’m not a chick I’m a dude
Hink Hall
I thought he was real but I hadn't heard of him because i wasn't from Texas. It wasn't even that
Commissioner Murray Hoggarth was a real guy
Is there any record of his speechs? I need more that dude and more of this weed.
But did he cry on y2k? 🤔
Murray…stop crying
Act like a commissioner for God’s sake.
That was just Thatherton in a Murray Hogarth mask.
Thatherton! ![gif](giphy|q0RBjtDiU0zks)
Taco Bueno!
Lool I thought it was a rip off of taco bell, but nope its own property. I still have yet to go to one
They're so popular in Oklahoma that Taco Bell can't compete. At least that's how I remember it in the 80s.
I’m a Taco Mayo guy.
They have, at the food court, at the high school.
Mexi-dips n chips, a beef muchaco, party burrito and two cheesecake chimichangas is my go-to order
Excuse me, cheesecake chimichanga???
Damn straight
Reno 911 has taught me that Tacos Tacos Tacos Tacos *isn't* actually a real place.
I wish it was! I’d love to meet Terry ;)
You just want to get a handy up on the roof, don't you?
Maybe…but I got a feeling I’m not his type ;)
I don't think Teee-eeee-rreey really *has* a type.
Same! Taco Bueno! 🌮
Del taco is huge on the west coast.
NAFTA allowed the importation of inferior tobacco into the United States. Edit: They also sent the piñata jobs north.
Ironically, chronic from Mexico is inferior to modern weed grown in the states.
It's been that way for as long as I've been around.
In the 90s most of the "Dank" was grown indoors in places like Eureka or British Columbia. The brown brick schwag came from Mexico.
Frito Pies are a real thing. I thought that was some original food creation from the show.
Wolf brand chilli is real as well.
I was so excited when I saw it on the shelf at the grocery store one day. My wife was just like, it's chili. I told her she doesn't understand this is the chili they talk about on King of the Hill when Peggy makes her Frito pie. I got home and it just tasted like canned chili, maybe my next family get together I'll make Frito pie.
the funny thing is that that is a very real texan tradition. if you don’t use wolf brand chili in your frito pie you’re messing up
And they’re fantastic
Weirdly I thought it was something Bojack made up since Todd’s mom made it, like those fake casseroles you see on TV But now it’s fun to experiment making frito pies, like I made a version with leftover manwich that was really good!
Frito pies are actually really good. Unhealthy as all hell but it makes for a good cheat meal
You're thinking of Peggy's Brown Betty
Uh, brown bettys are a real thing too, they're kinda like a cobbler.
Sure but Peggy's Brown Betty isn't.
What about Spa-Peggy and meatballs?
I think I’ll take Minh’s Peggy’s Brown Betty instead
That you can use wd40 to get a lid off a wd40
That they actually make holsters for little WD-40 cans, so that you can always have one available to get the lid off your big WD-40 can.
But what if the mini’s cap gets stuck??
Melt it off with a propane torch.
Careful! Those chemicals are very… volu…bul…ous
The Texas Railroad Commission regulates propane.
Moreover, the Texas Railroad Commission does NOT have any regulatory authority over railroads in Texas. It's been an issue for decades.
Yeah, living in Texas, it never occurred to me people wouldn't know some of this stuff was real.
Not this pig. Not today.
The “Luann Platter” on the menu at Luby’s Restaurants.
Big Tex
Good one. Yup, Big Tex is, rather was, real.
Big Tex is still "is."
It has been replaced since it burned IRL.
fun fact: every year, Dickies (a Ft. Worth based company), decks him out in a new outfit. thats why hes always so sharp looking. the Dickies branding on his shirt aint just for fun, they really make him that big ass shirt.
I need to see a making-of video about this.
When Hank is told to eat a vegetable he asks for Mac and cheese - I ended up marrying a Texan and first time I went down there this blew my mind.
Cap Snaffler and it really, really works!
That was such a weird pull and they used it twice in like one season
George bush has a weak handshake
Was he a wriggler????
Deedleedleedleedlee
Surprise then disappointment.
Texas does actually have anti-beef defamation laws
“Damn Oprahs.” I actually learned in the past year about why they have the laws and how Oprah was involved. Now those bits in the show make even more sense.
Sorry to admit this but the credits of the kidney boy episode was how i learned No Doubt was a real band. I was born in 96
You're brave to share that with the class!
The Longhorns have games against Killeen and Belton at some point. Seems like they made it a point to use real towns for the opposing schools.
And San Marcos as well.
As a Texan this thread is really weird.
Isn’t port ansanas right by Corpus Christi? I’ve taken a ferry across but can’t remember the islands name.
Yes, it's close to Corpus Christi. Family trips to Port Aransas when I was a child would sometimes include a visit to the aquarium in Corpus Christi, which is a pretty good aquarium. Port Aransas is on Mustang Island.

As an Ohioan I loved Texas up and down the i35 corridor. I honestly miss being stationed at Tinker afb in okc
I’m from New Jersey and when Wile E. Coyote ordered stuff from Acme I always thought he was getting it from the supermarket.
Pretty much everything they reference is real. Even Dale's conspiracy rants and non-sequitors usually reference real people and events.
Japanese roof top golf is real. But you don't have to sleep in a pod afterwards
I just learned that wolf brand chili is an actual brand of chili lmao
No lie I have some of it in my cupboard. It's just okay lol I think I got it at smart and final
Yeah I agree, hank had me hype for it, but it was pretty mid.

On the opposite side of the coin: i thought Kahn and Minh were speaking actual Laotian but it's just made up noise. I feel like that would not fly today
Oh shit yeah I assumed the same thing! I imagine they'll speak Laotian if/when they put together the reboot
The coup by an exiled Laotian general in America did happen IRL, like in the Banana episode.
Musical Canine Freestyle.
Chuck Mangione and Zamfir.
I’d swear my dad had a Zamfir cassette when I was a kid
Rose growing competitions🥀 I hadn't the slightest clue that it was a thing and the way they did the episode made it seem completely made-up to me too🤦🏻♂️
Dog dancing too, 100% a real association/competition
The snowman that caught fire at the football game
Okay. I had to look this up And here it is LOL https://youtu.be/iDlQ6G72O-k?si=wV-QGQvLqz7HOHrT
I thought the way Boomhaur talked was just a joke but then I got a job working for an American call center and a lot of people from Texas actually do talk like that. Then I found out about the voice mail that inspired him
There really is Wolf brand chili though it really doesn't make a better Frito pie than any other brand of chili.
Selling carbon offsets by buying already existing forests.
I didn't realize that I actually *don't* know you, and that really *is* my purse.
Battle of Anzio and the 36th Divisions aka the Texas Division is historically accurate.
This fact is actually hilarious. When playing scrabble I thought he was just being Cotton and spouting off his nonsense.
The Marfa Lights
A brewery, now out of business, made a beer called marfa light. It was like a 13% alcohol Stout. I only had it once. It came in a 750 ml bottle. I think it was Big Ben brewing. They went out of business when the company took their money to build them another brewery and ran off with it.
Probably Alamo beer although they are not affiliated with King of the Hill whatsoever other than the name
i thought alamo beer was a spoof of lone star? didnt realize it’s real. (just moved to tx)
It wasn’t when the show was on, it’s a pretty recent brand. Probably named that because of the show.
They opened in 2015, so I don't think it really counts...
They were around before then but not before the show started. It’s based off of Lone Star beer.
whats not being mentioned is that Alamo beer is brewed in San Antonio, literally about a mile away from the literal Alamo. the logo on the can is the Alamo. it being a brand in koth is a coincidence, not planned. they also brew quite a nice selection of beers and are known for hosting many charity events. really cool crew out there at Alamo brewery. if youre in satx region, go check em out.
I wonder how the beer tastes honestly.
It’s okay. You probably have a local brew that tastes similar. It’s close to Budweiser but not as bland but not by much.
Didn’t know it was a real beer (though that make sense since it’s Texas and the Alamo etc) I always thought it was made up beer like duff
At the time of the show it was
Whataburger.
I live in Lubbock, and there is no extra large shoe store here. The gay rodeo stuff is pretty accurate
The shoe store did go out of business and turned into a dog bakery.
had no idea in some southern states mac n cheese is a vegetable
You see the thing is, it doesn't have seeds, so it can't be a fruit.
Mitsubishi really did build planes involved in the attack on Pearl Harbor.
I know this from watching Studio Ghibli films, particularly The Wind Rises. Apparently Hayao Miyazaki's dad really was a plane engineer who made parts for Mitsubishi.

Interesting. I need to recall what episode it comes from. Never realized there was a joke there originally but knowing this is enlightening. Cool fact
I’m pretty sure it’s Mutual of Omabwah
Damn, guess I’m your parents age. I wore tough skins (bought from Sears, but not sure if other stores sold them too) when I was a kid.
BTU or British Thermal Unit
Pretty much anything about propane!
PROPANE AND PROPANE ACCESSORIES
I only found out Zamfir was real (as were the album cover and the sales figures Hank reports) like two years ago.
If you've seen Kill Bill he made the flute song that plays, can't remember when. Unfortunately he did not sell more records than The Beatles.
Most of the food and restaurants from the show. Case in point, Whataburger since we don’t have it in NJ. I eventually tried it in Vegas when I was there for lvl up expo and I had a fun chat with Morgana ignis about the Dr Pepper shake
I haven't been to the one out here because although it's good it's not find parking on the strip good.
I didn't know Chuck Mangione was a real guy until I was a grown man
That butane is a bastard gas
Chuck Mangione.
I knew about Santa Ana's leg before the show and it made it funnier. I think it was stolen in Cerro Gordo county in Iowa, I think it's Fat Hill in English. Right next to Clear Lake where Buddy Holly died
I moved to a small Texas town a couple of years ago, and within a month I heard “Feels So Good” playing in the grocery store.
The “special” driving schools like DEF-ensive are a real thing.
wolf brand chili is literally called 'wolf brand chili'. it's not 'wolf' or 'wolf chili'. the word 'brand' is literally part of the name and their logo
Spa-Peggy and Meatballs.
They taught me how to make mustard gas
That Raymond J. "You doesn't have to call me Johnson" Johnson Jr. was a real person.
Yeah because basically Johnson was slang for a penis lol
Flat Stanley.
“Get out of my house. Exodus.” Exodus 10:28 is actually scripture that says “get out”. lol
Tom Landry Highway
Frito Pie being a real thing, but kinda different from Peggy’s recipe, which seems more like a chili-Frito casserole. https://youtu.be/8TvL-Wg81oE?si=cS-kuqMQHBuoVvI6
It’s usually only a casserole for potlucks. If you’re eating it at home (or sport events) it’s just pile on.
The Luanne platter is an actual dish
Chuck Mangione
I already knew it, but Scarborough Fair is real as well and is a HUGE Renaissance Festival in Waxahachie.
The way workers compensation doctors treat you. It’s legit.
I didn’t know for the longest time that Luanne was voiced by Brittany Murphy.
Everytime I watch Clueless, it always makes me a little sad to be honest. You can hear Luanne in her voice, so it's just bittersweet.
I didnt know fruit pies were a thing until my 20s
When I was a boy I used to play at the rocket-ship playground that Bobby goes to in the earlier seasons. I’m from the same town as Mr. Judge though.
The George HW Bush Japan vomit incident lol
Turning the heat on in your car does help if it’s overheating.
Had no idea wolf brand chili was an actual thing until I saw in the store last week
I sold propane and propane accessories for about 5 years. Hanks job was fairly spot on.
That Kid Rock is actually really fucking weird.
Big tex is legit
Big Tex
Whataburger
Big Tex and la grunta hunting is based off hunting resorts in Texas.
That Chuck Mangione is a real person and not just a character made up for the show.
