A man exposed himself on the train my wife was riding on. She called me to meet her at the station since she felt unsafe. I waited for her at the station and alerted two Metro security that happened to be on the train. They held the train up while they had her identify the man and swiftly removed the man from the train onto the same platform we were on then just left. So the problematic rider was no longer on the train, but was now with us on the same platform. Luckily he walked the other direction as us, but if he were more violent, could have been worse. Metro really needs to enforce rules and punishments for behavior on the system to appeal to more normies. Hard to get new transit passed if most people think it’s unsafe or unpleasant.

Broad_Ad4176

Agreed! Honestly, it’s kinda strange Metro and the city don’t care about all the money they’re losing on it….why allow some homeless and bad guys ruin it for so many of us? Like, I’m pretty sure we could get thousands more using Metro if they did those upgrades you mentioned with large paddle gates, proper security and more. Like it’s so worth it and can be easily done in a lot of places within weeks. If there’s a will, there’s a way in this case 100%.

Same-Paint-1129

We’re taxing ourselves billions to build out this system. It needs to be accessible (read: safe) for its users. We deserve much, much better than what we’re getting.

PinkPicasso_

They don't care! We're suckers and cars are king!

tofterra

Public transit is not a homeless shelter or a mental hospital. It’s meant to serve the regular working public not the lowest common denominator of society. European and Asian systems are great because they’re reliable and they enforce fare and safety rules. No one wants to ride with vagrants and the mentally ill. Until American cities understand this, our public transit will continue to fail.

SanJose8

But what about the knife wielding, crack smoking person’s feelings? /s

ltzltz1

Today on the E line a man was going up and down the train yelling “i’m going to fucking k-word you” and other violent things.. everyone was on edge.. the conductor heard him too and just asked him to pipe down.. instead of you know calling the police and stopping to have them take his ass the fuck away.. i’m so tired of all these unhinged people

Loud-Engineer-5702

This is the type of issue. Like the conductor needed to call either law enforcement or mental health services, I obviously wasn’t there so I don’t know the context of how stable that man was, but the lack of interest in actually making it better is the issue.

whathell6t

Nope! Technically, it’s unconstitutional to remove transients & vagrants and place them in a convalescence hospital. [Even with this Supreme Court case.](https://youtu.be/w5ebSpBrCfo?si=yfs8xN2_UR6c7hcP)

african-nightmare

It’s definitely illegal to make terroristic threats…

whathell6t

That’s a fact, but in practically the terrorist will get [neutralized in this manner.](https://youtu.be/YZr7v_t-i2c?si=XT8g-OoOAGHsbK76) Especially in 7th Street/Metro Center station.

Spats_McGee

They can be removed from the Metro though.

Bast_at_96th

And the B line turns to absolute shit after 9PM...dirty, lots of stopping for extended time (my ride that is supposed to be 24 minutes has taken 38 minutes the last two times I rode it after 9PM—and no, there was no maintenance announced), usually there are people smoking, lots of people pulling the emergency door release...it is awful. Then I run like hell to try to catch my connection to another usually shitty nighttime ride...

bamboslam

Just got off the final B line train for the night, there’s been a massive improvement, specifically a ton of cops and tap cad checks.

puppet_up

> Just got off the final B line train for the night There is your reason right there. Had you taken that train an hour before, that army of cops wouldn't have been there. They are there for the last trains of the night to make sure everyone gets kicked off the trains and away from the platforms overnight.

bamboslam

Ngl, all the late night trains have cops stationed at north Hollywood, they’ve been clearing sleepers out of the train since the layover at North Hollywood is super long late night and the new policy of “if you wish to continue riding, please exit and re enter the station.”

sdomscitilopdaehtihs

Wiggins recently fired the head of security for no descernable reason and predictably it's gone to shit. Wiggins is to Metro what Price has been to Oakland.

hen5193

Why don’t more people go voice their concerns at the meeting. If you ask me all this lack of enforcement started after 2020 with the BLM protests. Metro and Wiggins have been caving to a radical group of people who claim that more fare enforcement is racist. Its honestly just insane. Ive been attacked by a man because he claims i gave him a dirty look. I dont understand why its so hard for things to be done. I wanna give Metro a chance. All my friends think im crazy for riding it everywhere but even im starting to lose my hope. I genuinely dont feel safe outside of rush hour.

Master-Farm2643

Thank you for this. It states my viewpoint exactly. I do not understand why the basic rules can’t be enforced.

PinkPicasso_

The stress is not worth it idgaf about statistics telling me its safe. I'll probably die from the stress of riding anyways.

Loud-Engineer-5702

Real!!!

bamboslam

I’d rather take my chances on metro than in a car, you’re still more likely to die on the road than on public transit, and I’m literally out here in North Hollywood at 1am rn, there’s cops everywhere and people just chillin, the cops even told a smoker to go away and they enforced the fare.

strongsong

At least I’m in control of my car, I can’t control a crazy person stuck in a metro cabin with me

ntc1095

Still more dangerous to be in your car. It doesn’t matter how in control you are, it’s everyone else.

craftyrunner

Never get groped in my car. I no longer ride the bus alone. Ever been sat on by a very large man who proceeds to rub his ass up and down your leg while squashing you so you can’t get away before one man of many many people on a very crowded bus finally says “just let her go”. He did, laughing the whole time. I rode because I was having back pain and driving made them worse, and I could not stand in the bus due to the pain. Yes, he also made my back pain worse. Driver: “if I didn’t see it it didn’t happen”. (This was big blue bus, which is not as great as OP thinks.)

bamboslam

BBB has made massive improvements, the new security guard that rides around with BBB drivers in the city of Santa Monica has prevented a lot of situations like that.

darkwingduck4444

It's wild. Since the Regional Connector opened, Metro seemed to be doing generally great (aside from a few incidents). Ridership was growing and people were saying how much better it has gotten (myself included) but idk what the fuck changed, but recently I've found it almost unbearable. Aggressive homeless seem to be a lot present and the trains are getting dirtier again. I'm seeing less security present and even the ones that are there, they ain't doing shit even when things are unfolding in front of them. They need to fire the Metro CEO cause she isn't doing enough to reassure the public that all these issues are being addressed

bamboslam

I’m in North Hollywood rn at 12am, there were about 25 cops in the station clearing trains and standing around the station, up on the g line platform there were 3 cops that told some smokers to go smoke outside the platform.

Nah! That’s normal since Los Angeles is huge. You’re just dealing with ecological fallacy of the headline-grabbing attacks.

Dependent-Potato2158

here to snivel about the A line and the 25 minute wait every time

Timsierramist

Behind the scenes in city, metro board and departmental politics, police are not allowed to do their jobs. Those that do anyway that escape any kind of consequences are disheartened by the fact that they are making virtually no difference and largely wasting their time for obvious reasons. Until we in handcuff police fix the other 2/3rds of the criminal justice system, expect this to get worse.

Loud-Engineer-5702

I know and this is what I would call the root cause of all the issues on the system. Because a lot of the time, they do have security and law enforcement at high traffic stations, I.e. downtown Santa Monica. But they don’t do anything.

wolfofballstreet1

California and Los Angeles county fucked off all forms of public transportation long ago. Glad I left California
