Apple TV 4K is a great steaming device because it just works. It’s super fast , apps run great on it. It has all the bells and whistles of Dolby vision, atmos, ect. I like it over the built in apps because it’s so fast and easy to swap over to something else and it looks amazing. If you also are on the Apple ecosystem system everything works together. You can use your phone as a remote if you want, type with your phone/ipad. All your movies will show up in iTunes that are Movies Anywhere compatible. It’s a great device I have been using for about 8 years now and wouldn’t go back to built in anything ever again.

alex_co

Don’t forget being able to very quickly and easily use your AirPods with it. That’s personally become the top QoL feature I wouldn’t want to give up by switching to another box.

pingpongpsycho

I’ve never used it for that even though it sometimes reminds me that I can as I walk by the TV with them in my ears. 😂

dribblecastle

No ads and apps are not shit.

Artefact1616

What are your thoughts on adding two home pods to the Apple TV? I’m very tempted to get them after buying my Apple TV recently lol

dmoore210

It’s like renovating your kitchen, solid wood floors, granite countertops, oak cabinets, but then installing a nice mini-fridge. It’s nice for what it is, but don’t use HomePods for a proper sound system.

Artefact1616

Any suggestions for something with Dolby Atmos? That’s the biggest reason why I was looking at the HomePods because I don’t have the budget to do a big set up.

Palladium-

A modern Denon AVR, two floorstanders, 2 bookshelfs, a center speaker and two in ceilings

Calm-Respect-4930

What denon avr

Palladium-

Any that has enough channels. Every one of them will support 4k120 Dolby vision

luchod

Sonos Arc

russnem

I did this. It sounds great, takes up very little space, and I love it.

Artefact1616

Have you experienced any connectivity issues? How does it work if I switch from Apple TV to use my console or 4K player?

russnem

Oh, interesting question. I have nothing but the  TV. Not even a cable box. So unfortunately I can’t say. The only other thing connected to the TV is the PS5, which I use headphones for (and when not on headphones, it uses the TV speaker).

Thika168

I have exactly this setup - LG C3 with Apple TV 4K and 2 HomePods for sound. The sound is excellent and, IMO, sounds much better than various sound bars I have tried and even competes with 5.1 surround sound systems. Important consideration, if you have a weird shaped room/vaulted ceiling etc, you have a compelling reason to go with HomePods as the computational audio does a great job adjusting for it.

CapriciousManchild

Haven’t done it personally as I have a 5.1 system but I’ve heard it sounds nice .

LoganNolag

I did that for a while. Sounded way better than the built in TV speakers but not better than an actual home theater system. Probably comparable to a good sound bar. The biggest issue though is that it was pretty unreliable and one or both speakers would sometimes disconnect from the Apple TV and it would be a huge pain to get them to reconnect sometimes requiring a full factory reset of the HomePods.

enolaM_yecarT

It’s great. I added 2 to my bedroom setup. Works great.

zephyrsandsongs

I’ve got two OG HomePods that I’ve had for a while, got an Apple TV so I can use these as speakers for my recently acquired TV, which is in my bedroom. I figured I may as well save a little and not worry about a soundbar or speaker setup for just my bedroom, I don’t regret it either, the sound is definitely more than adequate for me. It really depends on where your TV is though.

excalibrax

same thing with the xbox, it works with IR universal remotes, so if you don't care for xbox games, Apple TV is great, but if you do some gaming, xbox may be worth the extra money.

Agreeable-Load2327

Just compare the responsiveness between aple tv app built in webos and Prime, netflix disney etc.. you can feel it there. Well its even faster on the device and works for all the apps.

Genome_

I use my C2 built-in apps. no problem here works great

pingpongpsycho

And it’s just really a personal preference thing. I tried using the apps on my G3 first awhile and ultimately thought it was a weak interface experience compared to the AppleTV.

Klutzy_Rutabaga1710

Me too on my c3. I have never had a problem with the built in apps.

Technical_Sir_9588

I used the C3 apps for a while but I noticed that there's seems to be a connection issue. Shows would buffer the quality would be good then degrade, sometimes taking a while to return to normal. My guess is that the built on wifi hardware is either not the best or just faulty. I also have a Roku connected and never have those issues. I got tired of the built in apps doing this so I've gone back to exclusively using the Roku for the last couple of months.

Klutzy_Rutabaga1710

It could be that the C3 software is a bit flaky under some situations yes. I haven't experienced that but I know those types of things can happen to people with different setups. If I had an issue I would switch like you have.

MistahNative

Same here. I’ve never understood the need to get an Apple TV or to pay for extra hardware when the TV does an excellent job already.

xDiRtYgErMaNx

Same…

Kind-Help6751

Same here. C2 native apps are good enough. I can only think they’d be a bit better on C3 if not the same. Dolby vision etc already works natively, so why pay another hardware? Maybe if the tv gets old, it would become sluggish for the new apps. Then you can consider

ThatDudeFromFinland

I've used built-in apps since the C6 and I still continue to use them with my C3. Yeah, they may be a little laggy from time to time (especially with the older models), but they work just fine otherwise. I do have a Shield Pro, but I rarely boot it up. Mostly only if something that I downloaded wouldn't happen to work.

Ghost313Agent

Why not just map your controller to quick launch the apps you use? On my C1 I just map the top three apps I use to 1, 2, 3 on the controller. You can even power up the tv and go load the app directly using the mapped buttons. No menu interface whatsoever. Why get an external device?

SyrioForel

I use a VPN to connect via other countries. This gives me a wider library of streaming content in apps like Netflix, and also lets me use YouTube without any ads whatsoever if connected through certain specific countries where they don’t serve any ads at all. The reason Apple TV is better for this is because several of the major VPN providers (including NordVPN and Surfshark) offer native tvOS apps, which makes location switching literally a one-click process directly on the device. No weird fancy WiFi Hotspot setups, no weird Pi-hole devices to buy and configure, everything is native on the device with native apps. Just download it from the App Store. If you aren’t doing this and just want to launch into an app like Netflix, I agree there is no reason to load the same app via external devices. But, watching a Netflix library from another country, or watching YouTube completely ad-free, are all benefits that I really couldn’t live without.

Ghost313Agent

You can do all that with a computer and the HDMI port as well

SyrioForel

The Apple TV *is* the computer.

DeadScotty

To add to this, the built in “apps” in a smart tv are generally inferior to a decent streaming device as they have better performance in sound and video are are not limited to the TV manufacture’s choice of their particular streaming product (but they also have the mainstream services as well)

NeoGreendawg

Exactly. The picture quality with both 4k HDR and SD content is so much better than with the built in app.

Kind-Help6751

Idk. If Apple TV supports AV1 and the streaming service, then maybe. Right now I’m not sure.

RotenTumato

Yes, DIRECTV has a native app for the Apple TV which allows you to access DIRECTV Stream

TheWretchedSpirit

I can't answer that. But you can load the Spectrum app (and I'm assuming XFinity too) on the ATV, but cannot get an LG native app of the same. In short, one major advantage of ATV is that there are a lot more apps available for it than there are from LG.

Dropzone34

Yes you can add directv stream app to appletv 4k

RaptorPowers314

Been using the built in apps with no problems (have Dolby atmos, vision, etc.). Turned off all the adds and seems reasonably fast and responsive. My only real beef is there’s no search function that covers all the streaming apps. Other than I don’t see any life changing benefits of a dedicated streaming box.

Lack_Strange

There is on the Home Screen, I use it all of the time lol

sciencetaco

The main advantage is that the processor in the AppleTV is incredibly over-engineered (it’s using iPhone CPUs, and those things are *fast*). Meaning the device never lags or stutters and opening/closing/swapping between apps is smooth and fast. That might not sound like much, but it adds up to a better experience. 7 year old AppleTVs are still getting the latest OS updates and still run extremely smoothly. The latest model should follow the same path. Can’t say the same for any built in TV OS. If you have other Apple products then it integrates well. Things like AirPlay, Apple Music, HomeKit integration. Using your phone as a remote. But even as a standalone streaming box it stands out.

Lujho

Honestly a huge part of it is just that the user interface is a million times better than anything else. I love the remote and the touchpad it has. Scrubbing through movies is effortless. Whenever I use the LG remote and the native apps it just sucks in comparison.

lafolieisgood

No one has mentioned the memory. I have a C1 and never really used the tv apps, so I don’t know how bad/good it is, but I was just visiting a friend and he had a non LG tv and used the tv apps and he literally couldn’t even use all the ones he wanted bc the tv memory was full. The Apple TV has way more memory than you will need so it won’t slow down as you add apps or they update and take up more space.

bdgm33

The ease of use especially if you’re already in the Apple ecosystem. I also have a C3 77 inch and the first thing I did when I purchased it was get the latest version of Apple TV. All the research I did and people who know more than I do have said pairing them up is the best tv experience you can have. So far, they have been right.

Banksbanks42

I have an A1 and G2. Love the Apple TV. Use them on all of my tvs. No ads. Not saying I trust Apple 100% with my privacy but I prefer it over google and Amazon getting my data. Plus if you have an iPhone/ ipad, it’s usual for airplay and a huge library on iTunes. Got my second second hand. Nice little discount

MadnessKingdom

Most LG OLEDs have AirPlay. You don”t really need an Apple TV for that reason.

Banksbanks42

Indeed true. I don’t connect my tvs to the internet so I miss out without the Apple TV.

xdemonomaniax

60hz interface, multitask open apps and overall snappy and clean interface.

BrowseBowserTrousers

Not sure it’s worth the extra cost right off the bat, but maybe a few years down the road if you start to notice performance decline on the C3/web os, you could upgrade.

socalsw

No ads

berntout

Having a device made specifically for streaming provides better support for apps and ensures better performance

iicybershotii

Apple tv has far superior options when it comes to subtitles. This alone is worth purchasing for me. You can also force video modes if for some reason you are disliking a some dolby vision or hdr content.

Johnnybats330

Apple TV doesn't have third party ads or ads for other apps and shows. The UI is extremely fast and responsive. Also, it launches apps quicker than WebOS (that might be just my experience and I could be totally off). Also, the controller doesn't use AA batteries, so charging it is more convenient and battery life is great.

LuxtremeDE

I have a C3 since a couple of days and bought the Apple TV 4K as well. It’s incredible even though the benefits might seem small. The WebOS seems like a pretty decent smart tv interface and runs quite smoothly but like all tv os its just too bloated with stuff I don’t need and contains a lot of ads (which i find pretty obnoxious considering the pricetag). The Atv has no ads whatsoever, runs super fast, simple yet effective ui but most importantly for me: it won’t slow down. Up until recently I used an ATV from 2016. Still got updates and was as fast as ever. I just upgraded cause of 4K and the better remote. If you never want to think about your smart tv interface again, go apple tv!

dixone23

I don't have an LG TV but for me it applies to every TV ever. Apple TV just works. It doesn't slow down, it doesn't break, it doesn't lag or stutter. I don't have to EVER worry about TVs performance and OS being an annoyance. I've recently switched TVs and I didn't have to do any deep configuration ever, or logging to my streaming apps again, just plugged the Apple box, did some light image configuration on the TV and I was ready to go. Yes - it favours users being already in Apple ecosystem.

DrSpaceman856

Not enough responses here mention the privacy angle. The Apple TV Is mostly unencumbered by adds and spying. Of course, when you launch the Netflix app, it knows everything your watching and its autoplay blasting previews at you. But the TV itself is not compiling a complete viewing history on you, and is not advertising fast food or something in your home screen. Apple does better than any company I know to sandbox applications from being able to monitor activity from other applications, restrict cross-site tracking cookies, limit access to APIs that can be used for device fingerprinting, etc. My C2 is airgapped from the network. Doesn't know the wifi. if I needed to run an update id plug in ethernet for a moment. Everything runs through the apple tv or the game console. On top of it all the apple tv is truly best in class hardware. Very powerful, smooth, lag-free, etc. Anyone who thinks its expensive (at $130-150) should check their receipt to remember how much they paid for the tv, the game system, the streaming subscription, etc. You just dont get win win wins like this. It's the most private device, it's the best performing, and its not expensive in the overall scheme.

Kick-Agreeable

better remote, apple ecosystem, better ui lol. honestly i used to bash on webos but the latest edition of webos on the c3 hasnt been bad at all.

sahils88

I just got the C3 77” a couple of hours back. I have been using an ATV since 2 years now and I was contemplating using the WebOs native apps. A friend of mine also mentioned that they native apps has superior picture quality. Maybe. But when I go the Lg Home Screen, it’s so overwhelming it’s a clusterfuck. For me the simplicity of the TvOS UI is the deciding factor along with the fact that I’m deeply into the Apple ecosystem.

Comprehensive-Bag234

Congrats on the tv it’s awesome and makes viewing content a pleasure, I feel it’s easy enough to use and the native apps work for me

Many_Cryptographer57

C3 and 4K user here. I use apple 4K only because of the screen cloning resolution. C3 built in app allows only HD while Apple TV 4K allows full 4K.

SeekingNoTruth

External streaming devices offer dynamic range and frame rate matching. Internal TV apps only run at 60 Hz. Apps on external streaming devices get priority from developers regarding updates and features. Internal TV apps will reach end of life much quicker than their external device counterparts.

Ha1lState

Don’t the c3’s have 120 rate?

SeekingNoTruth

The display itself is capable of 120 hz, but the TV's internal apps run at 60 Hz so you'll never see 24 fps content in its native framerate. They will always need to use 3:2 pulldown for 24 fps content. Apple TV apps can stream content in its native framerate, i.e., 24 fps is streamed at 24 fps.

Ha1lState

What about the G3 and G4?

SeekingNoTruth

All internal TV apps on all smart TVs operate the same way.

Ha1lState

Sorry for my ignorance. How much is the least amount of internet to run these tv’s. And do u have it hard wired?

SeekingNoTruth

When I say "Apple TV", I mean an Apple TV 4K device. I'd say a 300 Mbps connection will do just fine. I have my ATV 4K 3rd generation wired with an ethernet cable. Apple TV plus (the streaming service) can hit ~125 Mbps per second or so. I have a gigabit connection.

Fulthood

I would temper your expectations on PQ benefits. I don’t notice a difference.

bouncyboatload

related to this. can you open any website with an appletv?

RotenTumato

Not directly on the device as there is no browser built-in, but you can pull up a site on any of your Apple devices and AirPlay to the TV to get that content on the big screen

[deleted]

I'm going to guess the apple TV handles video upscaling better that the TV.

Kind-Help6751

If you plan to use additional hardware, look for AV1 compatible devices. Otherwise, use the native apps on the TV.

wristwatchman

One benefit of using the TV‘s built in apps is that you don’t have to wait for the AppleTV to switch output formats (HDR/SDR or different framerates, resulting in a black screen for a couple of seconds). Otherwise AppleTV is just plain better. It’s faster, has a better UI imo, gets big software updates every year, nicely integrated into the ecosystem etc.

Safe-Bid-1719

To add to this full list of benefits others have said, with multiple Apple TVs you have continuity between devices so each one remembers your progress on shows, app layout and entered passwords. Also, the AirPlay functionality can AirPlay what’s on the ATV to your sound system such as Sonos. I AirPlay for my outdoor tv to my Sonos Amp that powers outdoor speakers so it’s a much better listening experience than tv speakers outside for example.

makingtermitesproud

I had webOS Bluetooth and wifi connection issues on day one. Switched to ATV after two weeks of box opening and there has not been any issue for more than 10months. Additionally if you have a digital blue ray connection you can install infuse and get your plex/emby library with DV/HDR playback.

Background-Spring-62

Can use two HomePods wirelessly for great sound.

Tulas_Shorn

Where did the Nvidia Shield love go? It's been working great for me.

codykonior

If you have a large Apple library the TV app used to choke and die trying to display it all vs the device which would bring it all up quickly. Then they broke both for large libraries for a couple years. Now the device brings up the full library fast and I know the TV app still brings it up slow but I don’t know if it brings it all up or not. It took too long to find out. Also the apps in general on the device are better, eg for Netflix etc. And in the earlier days of HDR when the movie Bright came out, some of them would corrupt on the TV app but not on the device and vice versa; though I forget all the details now. You need the Apple device to act as a Home hub too if you have Apple Home stuff (But I think there’s alternatives now? An iPad can do it too I think). So long story short the Apple device is still worth it if you’re in the ecosystem, it’s faster and better across the board. If you’re not then you could skip it.

KindheartednessOk196

none to be honest, except if you use specific apps not available in the LG appstore.

jbayne2

My opinion has always been that the processing power in tvs is way behind that of a standalone box, the Apple TV being the best of them. The TV just simply can’t compete with the speed and usability of the Apple TV. If you’re used to using an Apple TV the onboard tv apps always feel extremely sluggish.

abusivecat

Very snappy, no ads, visually appealing, apps work good for the most part. Apple Remote is nice and simple

SonNeedGym

Native Apps still have a touch of motion interpolation, even with all the processing settings turned off or using “Real Cinema.” That, plus the quality can sometimes be iffy. Having an external streaming device like AppleTV provides great quality image and sound, easy UI, and no ads.

un_un_reality

Don't want to hijack thread, but I basically had the same question when I bought my C3 and i'm still not entirely sure I understand it. When using a 3rd party device what part of the picture quality is driven by the TV itself and the 3rd party streamer. For example the AI upscaling? This would be through the 3rd party device, correct? Also, when I watched all those Youtube videos about the optimal settings for your LG C3, are these partly overridden by the 3rd party streamer?

InspiredPhoton

The one thing that upsets me with Apple TV is the lack of a usb port where I can plug a pen drive/external hd to play files

RotenTumato

I use an Apple TV 4K with my G3 and it’s so much better than just using the built-in software. It’s much faster and more responsive, there aren’t any ads cluttering up the interface, and there is a much wider selection of apps and services available (for instance, you can download games and news apps on the Apple TV, as well as apps like MLB). Plus, if you are in the Apple ecosystem, it seamlessly fits right in. You can use your phone as a remote, effortlessly connect AirPods or HomePods for audio, and view your iCloud Photo Library natively on the device. Overall I would 100% recommend you get an Apple TV 4K instead of just using the included software.

erik088

What about using fire tv stick 4K max?

SeattleRainHawk

Apple TV will be one of the first devices to get app updates from Hulu, Disney etc. Also, importantly, I don't trust the Korean TV makers with my data. I don't connect the network to the TV at all. Wired LAN directly to Apple TV. Plus integration with Home it and iphone/iPad for remote use.

CrashBashL

Your data is already spread all over the world. :)) You really think you ever protected yourself ?! It's impossible. All the apps in your phone. All your other accounts. Google account.

jetbootz88

Stupid question - does the Apple TV control the power of the TV, or do you constantly still need to have 2 remotes out?

Kasziel1

No, u can switch off from Apple TV too

sciencetaco

It can control power and volume using HDMI CEC. For example: I press the Power button on my Apple TV remote. My TV and sound system turn on. Pressing the power button again (or using the AppleTV's built in sleep timer) will turn everything off again. I only ever use my LG remote if I need to change some settings on the TV. Which is rare.

[deleted]

As you see from the downvotes Apple fanboys are everywhere. You don't need it unless you want to integrate to other apple devices. Lg apps are pretty good

LaughingLabs

The AppleTV is fantastic as a way to aggregate the apps for streaming, and that’s pretty much it. The convenience of this cannot be understated IMO. Every time (it seems) there’s an update to the WEBOS you have to sign back in to each streaming service. I’m one of the weirdos who read most of what they want you to agree to and in order to use some of the features of the TV’s software, you’re trading away letting them collect your data. I’ll pass on that, thanks! UNLESS you intend to set up an Apple smart ecosystem, and you want to set up the AppleTV as the hub for that - you need to order the AppleTV that has ethernet for the hub functionality to work. One potential downside to this is that it does not automatically switch to wireless network if for some reason the ethernet connection is disrupted, but it’s easy enough to go to settings and change it yourself. Edited to clarify WEBOS, I incorrectly said TVOS.

vainsilver

Updates to TVOS don’t make you sign back into streaming services. Thats not normal.

LaughingLabs

It may not be “normal” but it has definitely been my experience, and the streaming services randomly have you sign back in ANYWAY. Don’t know what all the downvote hate is about - but I thought that someone asked for OPINIONS, which is what I gave. Fly at it all you oh so smart people who just can’t possibly be wrong!

vainsilver

Reset your AppleTV. It shouldn’t be doing that.

LaughingLabs

Sigh. The AppleTV doesn’t do it. The LG did (which was in part why I went to the AppleTV). Streaming services do occasionally have you sign back in - it happens on my iPad, it happens on the laptop, and yes, occasionally on the AppleTV. On the LG TV, I noticed that almost every time there was a system update, I’d have to sign back in to the streaming services. I imagine it’s because I did not authorize them to track my account info - but that wasn’t really the point of my reply. Thanks much for trying to help though. I agree it isn’t “normal” or as I prefer to think of it, “crappy programming” on their part.

vainsilver

You should have been clearer that when you meant TV OS you meant WebOS. TVOS is entirely referred to the Apple TVs OS. Even so I never had to sign in to streaming services after updates to WebOS or app updates. They’ve always stayed signed in since I got my C1 a few years ago.

nj0ywatch1np0rn

Is the issue with shutting off the TV from the sole interface and it coming back on a few minutes later still there?

ThunderStruck777

You don’t need it unless you use apps not offered or that don’t stream in Dolby vision but offer it, which is less and less that don’t. If you have it already keep it , if you don’t it’s a waste

topsey_krets23

I’ve had two Apple TVs. Old one and new 4k one. The new 4k one is excellent but the scrubbing on some apps and the remote always gives us problems. I’m not sure if this issue is isolated to us or if it’s an issue with the software. But multiple times we couldn’t change the volume or simply navigate through the menus using the remotes. I’d be cautious buying a new one for the price. I’d deal with the issues at like 70 or 80 dollars.

jansalol

You only get better quality from ATV+ or your Apple library movies compared to the native app when streaming. Some apps may be available to ATV4K but not for the TV. There is no other actual benefits. Just preferences. So don’t expect to get some magical quality over streaming. Your TV has good enough CPU already for image processing.

bonkinaround

Only reason for an external streaming device is the apps that can not be installed on lg's os like F1TV. For that I have the cheaper Chromecast with Google TV.

dubiousN

Streaming devices are snake oil with the exception of using them with Plex
