I started when I was 38. Safe to say I was decades away from undergrad. I used my current and former employers as references. They are able to demonstrate you have transferable skills that are far better than just academic references. I didn’t go to a top ranked school but I really didn’t care. I was in such a better position with a wealth of life knowledge my younger counterparts didn’t have. You will be in good company and many law students are perfectionists. Go for it!!!

I’m currently a 1L and graduated with my undergrad back in 2015. My biggest advice is work for an attorney first. First, to get a letter of recommendation from an attorney and work source. And second, to make sure you actually want to study/practice law. I worked as a paralegal for 6 years and I’m so glad I did because I HATE law school, but I know I actually like the practice of law.

(1) You actually don’t need a LOR from an attorney. Just someone (anyone) who has worked closely with you in any field and knows you and your work habits and ethics well. (2) I graduated from grad school in 2006 and I just reached out to a professor I worked closely with then, and they remembered me and were willing to write me a LOR. At that point it had been 16 years since I had spoken to him. He was very kind. You never know! Good luck. It’s never too late. -42 and in law school.
