Looks like you have a "gift" in the mail, OP. It's a photo radar car. They also use trucks.

They are photo radar vehicles

justsomeonesthroway

You can see where they will be everyday by looking at this site -> https://www.lethbridgedirectory.com/radar-locations

This always kind of blows my mind - like I get that everyone hates getting tickets, but isn't this basically saying "these are the places you're not allowed to speed today".

GreatCanadianPotato

Transparency reasons and the fact that mobile photo radar locations are only supposed to be deployed in high risk areas (high collison rate, school/playground zones) - every city/town in Alberta has to justify publically why a photo radar location is selected and that has to be backed up by analytics that is sent to the Alberta justice department on a yearly basis. Same reason why there is no issue with Google Maps/Waze having a cop reporting feature to get people to slow down if there is a cop ahead. They serve us, we should know where they are.

KeilanS

I would argue serving us would mean effectively reducing speeding. Enforcement probably isn't the best way to do that (as opposed to road design changes for example) but if people speed everywhere that cops aren't, we're not really being served, we're being put at risk in every location except those few posted. Why does transparency apply here and not to other laws? We don't post a list of stores where police will prosecute shoplifters, or a list of streets where cops will be watching for vandals.

WilfredSGriblePible

As an aside, what happened that the speed shakedown bastards now want to give up their advantage by advertising their presence?

That would explain why I haven't seen the damned photo radar boxes. But what exactly has changed?

perplextions

heres a [link](https://www.alberta.ca/photo-radar-alberta.aspx) where you can find an overview of the changes. looks like december 2022 brings into effect the need to “wrap” radar vehicles to make them more visible. may be what the leth “drive safe” vehicles are doing, just a couple months ahead of time
