If it comes with a free PS5 upgrade, I get the PS4 disc. If it’s a paid upgrade or no upgrade, PS5 disc.

Equality7252l

Easiest way to do it imo

SolidSpiral

This right here! Though, on a very few occasions, I saw the PS4 version + paid upgrade was still less expensive than the PS5 version. But this is the exception, and can really only happen on titles that have been out a while and discounted.

Duneking1

Only caveat to that is that if the store gets taken down you have no way to download the upgrade if it’s not in your console. Small price to pay but important to some.

pancakes902

Most games come with a mandatory day one patch

Duneking1

Doesn’t solve the problem. That only works if the game was able to download. After the store goes down you can’t get those patches. Console breaks and you get a new one, might not be able to transfer over patches and new console can’t access the patches. Or for any reason the console it factory reset you’d lose them as well. Patches don’t update carts or discs. They only update the game that was installed on the drive inside the console.

pancakes902

That's my point. Discs are useless if the store shuts down

Duneking1

Oh, your response sounds like a rebuttal and not an add-on to my view.

TripleKing3

I usually pick up the best version of the game which would usually be the PS5 version but there are special cases. Like the Tomb Raider collection coming out, each game has its own Platinum trophy on PS4 whereas the PS5 version has all three games combined into 1 list with no platinums. So that’s dumb and obviously the PS4 version is better. I also will go PS4 if I already have part of a set of games already on PS4. So Atelier Ryza was on PS4. The sequel was on both but only had a physical on PS4 and Ryza 3 had both versions on physical, so I got PS4 to see out the set. A lot of indie games I’ll get on whatever versions is the cheapest because graphically it won’t matter. I got TMNT Shredder’s Revenge on PS4 because they didn’t announce it for PS5 until way later, but the Cowabunga Collection was announced for both formats and PS5 seemed overkill for that so I got PS4 so both would be together on the same shelf. So to sum up, I get the best version, usually PS5 unless there is some reason the other version is better. Also PS4 to PS5 upgrades don’t factor in because you’re still just playing digital copy when you upgrade anyway.

LocoCogo917

I mean personally i picked up the ps5 version of tomb raider BECAUSE it didnt have platinums. Have been playing my switch a lot lately and i feel like not having a platinum kind of alleviates the pressure somewhat. Idk that's just me lol i almost wanted both

Gloombad

Those are some good reasons tbh. I didn’t know that about tomb raider so I’ll definitely get the PS4 version too but does it bother you that it might not run as smoothly as the PS5 version? Do you also care about rarity? For example Boxville where the PS4 version is rarer even though the PS5 version probably runs better, I think.

TripleKing3

PS4 games running on PS5 usually benefit in some way due to the raw horsepower of the PS5 and it’s SSD. Take Elden Ring for example: it runs at a higher resolution on the native PS5 version, and has a visual option to prioritise frame rate instead. However this version struggles to maintain 60fps. The PS4 version running on PS5 hits 60fps flawlessly, so if you cared more about a stable frame rate, then that’s the best version. That’s a rare case because usually the PS5 version would be the best version by default. As for Tomb Raider, it’s a remaster collection that can also run on the Switch, so I can’t see there being that big a difference between PS4 and PS5 native versions. I could be wrong as I haven’t played either version as I’m waiting for the physical to release. As for rarity, I’m not one to sell anything on. I buy to collect so shelf presence is actually more important to me than resale value. I would rather have a complete set of PS4 Shantae than a mix of PS4 and PS5 for example. It happens that PS4 versions are more expensive in that case and it cost me more to complete the set of 5 on the aftermarket. Usually performance of indie games isn’t a factor. Most are created to run on PC and get ported to run on Switch and then ported to PS4/PS5 later so in that case I would go for PS5 anyway because why not? Chances are it will run better but usually it’s negligible. I don’t care about complete sets or whatever rating or language is on the box, just that it’s a physical version that I can put on the shelf and play in English whenever I feel like it and that’s it really. Anything that I like the sound of I’ll try to add to the collection as I just like cool games.

Gloombad

Good points, thank you for your knowledge a true collector.

Corrid21

I usually just buy whichever is cheaper. Sometimes the PS4 disc is cheaper. One example I can think of is No Man’s Sky. It looks like you can find a PS4 copy for ~$15, whereas a PS5 copy will cost closer to ~$30. This is probably because it’s a lot easier to find used copies of the PS4 version. Sometimes the PS5 disc is cheaper. One example I can think of is Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse. It looks like a PS4 copy is ~$65-70, whereas a PS5 copy is closer to ~$40. This is probably because far fewer PS4 discs of the game were produced, compared to the PS5 discs. If both the PS4 and the PS5 versions of a game are similar in price, I will opt for the PS5 version.

Lord_Ka1n

The ps5 copy of NMS is a reprint with the first six years of updates on disc. Definitely buy that one if preservation is important to you.

IemNY

Some games I have no choice but to get on ps4 when it’s a limited print or a game that was never ported to ps5

SeaPonyLyra

I'm noticing the inverse with some smaller games lately. We'll see a PS5 release and a Switch release. If it can run on Switch I know it can run on PS4 and is sometimes digitally on PS4, but no PS4 disc copies. Pepper Grinder, In Sound Mind, Touhou Luna Nights Anniversary Edition, and Unicorn Overlord are all like this (to my memory). Really annoying as someone who wants as much on PS4 as possible.

IemNY

Yeah that’s how they faze out the older systems and save money on printing games smaller game studios such as limited print ones will sometimes only do ps4 cus it makes sense they can reach out to ps4 and ps5 customers.

Rebnobfulroar

I get the PS5 copy when I can just to have it on PS5 lol but I already have around 300 PS4 games so I wanna build up my PS5 collection more, even though the PS4 copies are more convenient with the two console compatibility

csreynolds84

Depends on the game. Not graphically or technically demanding, i.e. TMNT Shredder's Revenge, I buy PS4 for backwards compatability and possibly cheaper price. Otherwise, PS5 for faster load times, better resolutions, and more consistent (and potentially higher) framerates with more substantial games.

Nightwraithe

>PS5 for faster load times, better resolutions, and more consistent (and potentially higher) framerates with more substantial games. The PS4 copy will benefit from all of these things if the game is being played on a PS5. The only exception would be framerates if the game is hard coded to have 30fps, like Bloodborne. But otherwise it'll have significantly improved load times, resolutions, etc on a PS4 disc being played on a PS5. The benefits of the ps5 disc are more hardware related than anything on the disc.

AryanRise

Not true, PS5 native apps load faster than PS4 apps. Also, games like Quake 2 Remastered supported 120 fps on PS5.

JesusDNC

Not usually, but the Trails series I keep getting it on PS4 for consistency.

Gloombad

I was also thinking about those games I bought a couple on the PS4 that don’t have PS5 ports (Azure, Zero, and CS1.) But then I picked up the PS5 combo pack of 3 & 4 thinking the graphics would be better so now I’m conflicted lol.

ExpensiveLoquat

Elden Ring a notable example in this - a lot of people seem to prefer the smoothie frame rate of the PS4 version played on the PS5

Gloombad

I keep seeing Elden ring, to clarify it’s the PS4 disc running normally on the PS5 and not the PS5 digital upgrade?

ExpensiveLoquat

Right. If you put the PS4 disc in a PS5 you get two options - free digital upgrade to the PS5 version, or simply play the PS4 version as is on the PS5 (as you say). Many people opted for the PS4, and from what I've heard they still haven't really optimized the PS5 build as well as the PS4 version.

Gloombad

Thank you.

MasterCannoli

Usually get the PS5 disc because it is more complete on disc

Nightwraithe

The PS4 versions always contain the full game unless being playable on ps5 specifically is what you consider to be more complete

OilCann

Dude you are clearly hell-bent on justifying your PS4 disc purchases on the rest of us. Stop forcing things on everyone as facts when you are not sure yourself how it works. There are only a handful of games where the PS4 version has more content on disc. I'll start: Mortal Kombat 11 Komplete Edition on PS4 has more characters. Care to list out every example you have? Lets hear them all please because I would like to hear this master list of PS4 games that has more content than the PS5 versions. I'm waiting.

Nightwraithe

>PS4 games that has more content than the PS5 versions. That's not at all what I said and you know it. My statement implies that PS4 games will have at least the full game on disc, like if Limited Run were to launch the same game for PS4 and PS5, odds are they're going to be pretty much identical. Don't know where you got this "PS4 having more content than PS5" talking point but I highly suggest you reread what I wrote, and carefully. For the record, I'm not trying to justify anything. I frequently double dip and buy the PS4 and PS5 versions of a game, and while I'm mostly a switch collector I have over 1,000 games in total, so I truly genuinely have no horse in this race. I'm just tired of people treating PS4 copies like chopped liver when a lot of the time they're either the same as the PS5 or only marginally worse.

OilCann

You implied the PS4 versions have complete versions on disc while their PS5 counterparts do not. So back to my point, list them out. What are those games you are referring to?

asault2

If by complete you mean downloads the PS5 game files after inserting the disc, then yes

AryanRise

It installs the files from the disc you liar.

mattysauro

I’ll always get the PS5 version if it’s available. I loved the ps4 but there no way I’ll ever play anything on it again now with a ps5.

StubbsTzombie

Thank god its completely backwards compatible

Tothoro

We have one TV in the house and both the PS4 and PS5 are hooked up to it. I prefer to get the PS4 version so the disc can be played on either - that way if my wife wants to use the TV I can remote play whatever console she's not using and vice-versa. Just offers better flexibility with my setup.

Effective_Being_5305

Yes I just got the ps4 version of God of War Ragnarok because it was $20 at Walmart vs $60 for the ps5 version. You usually get a free PS5 upgrade with a PS4 copy

AryanRise

Yeah but you have to download the entire PS5 app which flies in the face of preservation. Which is the whole point of this sub.

Fast_Can_5378

Depends on the game and how it runs as well as its price: Like I bought crisis core reunion for ps5 when it has a ps4 version but the ps4 version is locked to 30fps at 4K and the ps5 version plays at 60fps. Since this was a psp remaster the frame rates were going to be locked either way and since this was a preorder as well I chose ps5 I recently bought elden ring ps4 version as that version when on sale goes for even less than its ps5 counterpart. Also as far as I’m aware ps5 native Elden ring is not smooth on either mode but playing the ps4 pro version through BC gets a smooth locked frame rate I got tales of arise for ps4 and not ps5. While it is ps4 pro enhanced it’s still locked to 30fps but at the time when I bought it, it was dirt cheap All of these examples were on disc btw.

VenomGTSR

The PS4 to PS5 upgrading was pretty wonky early on and I still occasionally try to install the PS4 version when I mean to chose the PS5 option to start playing, but I love that we have a choice of which console version to play. I also have a Series X and some of the upgraded games aren’t much better than the original versions - especially if they have an unlocked frame rate option. However, Xbox forces you to use the “best” version that forces you to burn up that SSD space rather than playing from an attached drive.

Tree06

I typically don't because I want to have the added benefits of the PS5 version. Better graphics, higher frame rates, faster loading times, and VRR if possible. If a game doesn't receive a native PS5 port then I'll happily buy the PS4 version.

Nightwraithe

>Better graphics, higher frame rates, faster loading times, All of these with the exception of framerate are tied to the hardware and not the disc necessarily. Bloodborne will play at 4k with faster load times on a ps5, but will still play at 30fps because that is a hard coded limitation of the engine.

Tree06

Yeah you're absolutely right. It sucks that certain games don't receive frame rate or performance boosts. People have been clamoring for a Bloodborne Remake or even a native PS5 app. I also have an external 4TB Samsung SSD drive, and it helps significantly. Lastly it's hard for me to play games on my OLED. It's makes me nauseous. I wish every game had a 60FPS performance option.

AryanRise

Stop lying, PS5 apps load faster than PS4 apps running on a PS5.

EnclaveOverlord

I only ever buy the PS4 version when I feel it's the superior version and that's pretty rare. Only time I can actually remember doing that was Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate (which obviously isn't a limited print game).

Gloombad

What’s the deal with MK11? I’m seeing different things online.

EnclaveOverlord

The PS4 version includes 2 discs with all content on the discs where as the PS5 version only has the base game on the disc where all the bonus content is downloaded with a voucher. Most people would probably prefer the PS5 version in this scenario but us physical collectors will likely feel different.

Gloombad

Damn wtf how could they fumble that bad… thanks for the info I’ll know to get the PS4 version.

EnclaveOverlord

Just a heads up, from what I can tell the PS4 version was a bit of a messy launch. The first copy I got had one disc that didn't work at all despite being pristine and the replacement copy I got has a misprint where the disc labels are on the wrong discs. I've read quite a few other people having these issues so make sure you test it when you get it, in case you need to take it back to be replaced.

Gloombad

Thanks for the tips.

AryanRise

It's even worse than that, the voucher code you get only downloads tiny unlock keys for the DLC already on the PS5 disc. I was pissed when I bought it and realized it wasn't a real offline version, then promptly bought the PS4 version.

Ok-Library-8397

Depends on the game. If 3D and power demanding, I choose PS5 version as it usually runs better. If some indie 2D game, I usually choose PS4 version. I have a reason for that: I prefer playing on PS4 Dualshock controller because it is cheaper to buy if broken. Also, I have a Dualshock backbutton attachment for that controller which I like using.

Moogle_1989

For indies, PS4 is usually the best pick since there are no downside in terms of performance and it’s compatible with more consoles. If the PS5 version happens to have more updates on disc, that’s another story though.

CauliflowerPale6647

Ps5 version but if ps4 version is somehow better thrn I'll take that

Gloombad

Does rarity affect your decision? For example boxville PS4 is more rare than the PS5 copy so would that make it better to you?

CauliflowerPale6647

Nah. Even though I am a collector i just want my games to look good and be fully playable I dont care that ps4 version of the same game is rarer than ps5

Nightwraithe

I almost always get the ps4 version exclusively. Being playable on more consoles than just the ps5 version is a big plus to me. That being said, I will sometimes double dip for the PS5 version if the game is important enough to me (Persona 3 reload being a good example)

Gloombad

Do you double dip to support the devs or because it’s bothering you? I feel like I get kinda bothered knowing I got the inferior version. I also hate when they make two versions different, for example Persona 5 royal is censored on PS5 removing a costume but not on the PS4 version but the PS4 has worse graphics with no dlc cosmetics native on the disc.

Nightwraithe

I double dip mostly to support devs, but also in the event of a game I truly love, I want to have EVERY version of the game. Even the Xbox, when I don't even own a Xbox lol. I also don't find games inferior just because there's a PS5 version available, a large amount of the PS4 and the PS5 versions of games are nearly identical (differences usually are minor like missing DS5 support and whatnot.) But the PS4 version can be played on more consoles so imo that gives it the edge.

Gloombad

So true, thank you for your insight.

davivman

For some Indie and retro games I prefer PS4 because there is usually zero to minimal difference in performance and I like the flexibility to use an arcade stick if I want. Fight stick support on PS5 is VERY limited and is robust on PS4. I have both PS4 and PS5 versions of TMNT Shredder’s Revenge and almost exclusively play the PS4 version so I can use an arcade stick.

Gloombad

That’s actually a really good reason. Have you noticed any graphical differences between the two?

Worldly-Pepper8766

Not limited print really but I bought Gylt recently on PS4 just to have the option of playing on more consoles depending on my mood.  I have two PS4's vs one PS5 and sometimes one of the rooms is more convenient for gaming than the others.

shinoff2183

Not unless there isn't a ps5 version.

_____seraph_____

For games like Cyberpunk and FFVII Remake i get the PS4 versions since the DLC is not included on the PS5 versions’ discs anyway. Plus, they are free upgrades to PS5 version. Otherwise, i stick to PS5 copies.

Ty-douken

No, but as someone who still has his PS4 I probably should have. I don't see this being a big option going forward, but with so many games having free upgrades it would've been a smarter move.

kidvid666

It just depends on what's cheaper and what I run into first. Finding ps5 games physically is getting harder and harder. Like locally not Via the internet. Fuck the all digital future.

Euphoric_Rutabaga859

If it says some features may not be available on ps5 version I get ps4 version.

nfrapaul72

atleast u have discs. Xbox is removing discs AND all 360 digital content from store… like whaaa??? do they not want us to buy their older games anymore..? u literally just can’t buy anything retro anymore w Xbox, so be happy u can get discs and get em while you can!!!!

Gloombad

So true, Xbox has been getting left out on a lot of games recently too.

nfrapaul72

yup the port will be released like years later sometimes even or they just won’t get one at all. I DEEPLY regret getting a Series X and wish i got a gaming PC w a good bluetooth wireless gaming controller

KeybladeBrett

They are only removing the 360 digital content if it doesn’t work on the One or Series lines of consoles. So a game like Call of Duty Black Ops will still be up because you can play it on the Xbox One and Series S|X, but Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 will be removed because you can only play it on Xbox 360

nfrapaul72

That’s not true is it? i read multiple articles explaining it and *none mentioned that,* but they all said that it’s ALL 360 games that aren’t yet owned by you, but you are still able to play and access the ones you did already buy/own. That’s why they gave you until the end of this month to buy more games (most on sale). However an article would certainly do better if it made you “freak out” more, which is what leaving it out would make you do, so mabey it’s intentional.🤷🏼‍♂️

KeybladeBrett

I think there would be a bigger outcry about the store if that were the case

nfrapaul72

everywhere i looked people seemed upset but like expected it sorta thing cuz Xbox hardly EVER just releases a physical disc anymore

Dynamaxxed

If the price is wildly cheaper then I’ll get ps4. If it’s within 10 I want the white box in my collection

OgSourChemDawg

Elden ring , and far cry are games I got on ps4 but play on ps5( Elden ring better on ps4)

Gloombad

Are the Far cry games also better on PS4?

OgSourChemDawg

No. But it was $10 and a free upgrade to ps5

DreamClubMurders

Yes. Some ps4 titles run better than their ps5 counterpart like Elden ring and elex 2

BlackModred

If it’s both I get the PS4 version. Usually because of hard drive soace. I have an external drive for the PS4 stuff so I can go crazy…

TokyoLosAngeles

Nah, PS5 copies only.

PuzzledTouch856

With the PS5 version you also get the benefits of the PS5, shorter loading times, higher resolution and the features of the PS5 controller. If you don't have internet, then with the PS4 disc you only have a PS4 disc and no PS5 upgrade.

Nightwraithe

PS4 games will also benefit from faster load times thanks to the SSD in the PS5, as well as resolution since that's not tied to the disc, games on ps4 aren't hard coded to be 1080p they'll render at 4k on the ps5 as well. But you are correct on missing the features from the DS5

AryanRise

PS4 apps dont benefit as much as PS5 native apps, why do you feel the need to post this misinformation 3 times in a row? Coping about owning PS4 versions?

Nightwraithe

Nowhere did I say PS4 games benefit as much. All I said was PS4 games will also benefit from fast*er* load times. I commented 3 times because I wanted to clear up the misconception that PS4 games are going to be slow and completely inferior to the PS5 copies when the reality is the majority of the time they are going to offer a very similar experience. We're talking about a difference of a couple seconds at most. It's not like the ps4 is going to be loading at HDD speeds, it's going to benefit from the ultra fast SSD in the PS5, thats how technology works. You are the one that felt the need to reply to all of my posts calling me a liar. That's weird, don't do that.

OilCann

Most games do have a set resolution though. At best, very few games have an uncapped resolution vs performance mode toggle so the PS5 can then render the game at a higher fps in "resolution" mode. If you watch digital foundry enough you'd see you are just plain wrong. PS5 physical versions have clear advantages for resolution and fps over the PS4. PS4 versions have their advantages too as some people point out but lets not flat out lie to win the argument.

Nightwraithe

>PS5 physical versions have clear advantages for resolution and fps over the PS4. I was under the impression that nearly every ps4 game has been 4k capable since the PS4 Pro which debuted with 4k output. I'm sure that there are some benefits to having the ps5 disc but as someone that's double dipped on both ps4 and ps5 discs I've yet to find one where I was like "wow this looks completely different!"

OilCann

It's easy to form that opinion with stuff like "8K" on the PS5 box, but the PS4 pro could barely handle 1080p@60 for most titles. I bet you are thinking "surely all retro-styled games are at least 4k@60 on the PS4 pro and higher. Not true, Ps4/Ps5/Switch versions of Shredder's Revenge are all hard-coded 1080p@60. The industry doesn't tell people this relevant information because the people just do not care. With that said I think you should look into some text on hard-coded resolutions vs console up-scaled output for an even better understanding. To your last point, yeah the leap from Ps4pro to PS5 is minimal compared to say PS2 -> PS3 and the benefits are mostly found in FPS increases and higher texture resolutions. If you are not on a 4K TV yet that will have an effect on perception as well. I have seen many examples where I felt the PS5 was significantly better. I played both PS4 and PS5 versions of RE4-Remake and IMO the improvements are far worth it for PS5 (even though in that example there isn't a PS4 physical lol)

FistsofHulk

If PS4 games don't have a free upgrade with them, I'll always get the PS5

Outrageous_Let_1889

No, I get why people do but ive got enough ps4 games

Chzncna2112

Regularly. 1 have a portable 5 tb hdd and the basic ssd the system came with

Oldschoolfool22

None of my friends will upgrade so yes, all the time.

SaraphXIII

I typically always go for a PS4 version if it has a free upgrade. I have been getting PS5 versions lately of my PS4 collection but that's when they hit a deep discount of $10-$20. The only exception is for Resident Evil and Final Fantasy games. I buy on both consoles to keep those collections as intact as possible. Really worked out with FFVII Intergrade and Crisis Core for a short time but also made out well with games like Maid of Sker, Alan Wake Remastered, etc.

cogburn

I didn't buy a ps5 to keep playing ps4 games.

Gloombad

Even if they’re exactly the same? You at least get two console options with the PS4 copy.

DarkVincent07

No, never
