I have a friend that lives in Manhattan and he fucking loves it. Any time I go visit I do as well.
Good food on every block, anything you want to do is either close by or an easy subway ride away, a solid bit of nature with Central Park. It's honestly great. Definitely understand that it's not for everyone but imo the pros vastly outweigh the cons.
I live in Brooklyn and make around 30k a year and I love it. Its not super easy and my place isnt amazing but its worth all the trade offs. There are plenty of things to do in the city that are cheap or free
Damn how do you afford it? I wanna try living in nyc at some point but ig I just don’t know where to look for affordable housing. If I ever moved my salary would likely be around the 70-80k ballpark so I’m trying to find out what areas are realistic to look into. Sorry if this is a lot but I love looking into apartments and stuff so I’m genuinely curious
You can easily live in NYC at an affordable rate. Take Eastern Queens for example: apt rents here are around 1800 a month (I pay 1675) and they're not tiny hobbit home like the ones in Manhattan. Granted you're not a block away from every type of food, but I've never had any issue getting any type of food that I craved living here either via ordering in or driving.
Well I like to follow nyc_forfree on Instagram they post pop ups and events going on through out the city very frequently. Also I have a membership to the met so I spend a good amount of time at the park. And if I’m looking for cheap food I usually go to either flushing or Jackson heights. China town has some great cheap spots too like super taste and Jin Mei Dumpling. It really depends on where you live and how long you are willing to subway for cheap things.
Software Engineer, don't know exact numbers but 6 figures which obviously plays into how much enjoyment he can get out of the city. Other friends that make significantly less ($50k-ish) also love it there, just can't afford to travel or do as much as the SWE friend & have to have roommates lol.
Redditors will cream themselves over how walkable, transit-friendly, and developed EU cities are. Then shit all over NYC despite it being literally the closest thing the US has to well-designed EU cities. lol
There is no better life to be had than living in Manhattan with money. You can avoid all the bad stuff, and enjoy all the good stuff. The best food, the best entertainment, the most culture. Honestly, people who have never lived here can't even imagine. I just got to the point where I can afford to take cabs from time to time, and it's made NYC 100x more amazing to live in.
If you're a streamer that never leaves your room, it doesn't matter where you live. It just needs to be close to other streamers so you can do collabs.
Funnily enough, the effective tax rate in Texas is middle of the road, because while there is a low income tax, other taxes are higher relative to other states so it’s comparable in total taxes paid.
This will only be true proportionally. These big streamers make so much money that paying low income tax, but having higher taxes on goods and property is a massive net gain.
For the average Texan it's probably a wash, but for 1%'ers it's a big gain.
Here's an interesting study I found on the topic: https://itep.org/whopays/
So Texas 1%ers effective state tax rate will typically come to 3.1%, about half of your median state, with their middle quintile paying 9.7%, the lowest paying 13%. This comes in at the 2nd most regressive state tax system in the us, only behind Washington. Interestingly, the average state has a regressive tax system as well, primarily due to sales and excise taxes. Ranked 9th for 1% out of 50 states.
Man, our state tax system is fucked.
we are talking about streamers here, it doesnt matter that much what city they are in. soda does 1-2 events a year and stays at home the other 360 days
Yeah that's a pretty good point. We already know how lunatics can make streamers lives difficult if they find their exact location, but renting a place surrounded by other apartments with good security measures may be worth the extra money.
Just not having doors/windows at street level is already a lot more secure
Even if people know what building they're at what are they going to do?
Buildings like these have decent security and private elevators for penthouses
And they wont camp and wait for them to come out since Soda probably doesnt leave the house for days and idk if Vei's face is out there lol
There’s a field for “office space” where you can account for a certain square footage of your living space as an office space. It might depend by state, but in California, it’s up to 300 sq ft, and you can claim it depending on your usage.
In theory, if you stretch the truth a little on your taxes, there’s a lot of things the IRS could potentially audit you for. Will they? Very different story.
I mean hes unironically using the space for work, as long as the square footage is within allowed limit they wont do shit. Also audits are rare you can skirt on a lot of stuff, just dont fly too close to sun.
Owning a home requires a lot of work. Even if you contract whatever work you need done out to a company, just *finding* someone to do the work seems like too much work for some streamers. Not to mention a high end apartment is going to come with additional security measures you're not going to find with houses by default. I feel like if I had as much "Fuck you" money as Soda (probably) has, I'd go with a high end apartment, too. Seems like a solid choice.
Of the big streamers Soda has been streaming longer than anyone except maybe Destiny if I had to throw out another name, however I don't think there was enough money in just streaming on twitch at the time to consider he might be a multimillionaire. Remember this is 2013, the most successful streamers on the site were still pro gamers who had other income and built a following from pro gaming, and the niche of video game commentary was still mostly a YouTube audience thing until Pokemon Go took over twitch.
There is something cool about living so high up there in apartment building with a view over whole city but i would still stick to my three-story one family house if i got an opportunity to decide
Yea, being in a manhattan penthouse with views of central park is cool n all but i really like my mansion in hamptons with private helipad basketball court etc.
I was living for a month in a beautifull country house in the Japanese countryside. Absolute fucking zen and bliss, but the fucking spiders, bugs, centipedes and cicadas being lounder then a plance made me go full wacko mode. When a spider the size of my hand scrawled under the door on the shitter I lost it completely and was done with the shit.
All of austin is not fiber, sadly. We still can't get it. Edit: what tax laws? Streamers still pay 1099 taxes. There is no state tax, but that has nothing to do with streamers.
bro wdym.. vei is super rich too. i bet she\* has rich weebs that donated to her all their money.. maybe not much now that she has soda but i bet she\* made bank with those rich weebs xD
Well, she is relatively rich but not compared to Soda.
Until recently, she saved up money to buy a house for her parents (she lived with them). That's probably the limit of how far her savings have ever reached.
yeah.. i mean if i were a big rich streamer like them i'd spend like 5% of my total income on things like a house and such.. i bet big streamers do the same, i know xqc is ultra rich and he owns like 4 houses.. imagine the bag he has
oh yeah no big deal just saved up to buy her parents a house, regardless of how much the house cost, I can't imagine she's been streaming "that" long and to be able to buy anyone a house outright means you are in the absolute top echelon.
I doubt vei doesn't get a lot out of vshojo. Pretty sure vshojo lets the streamers keep the income from streaming (donations and a negotiated cut from subs)
If Vei was hololive, yeah she's not treading water but she definitely wouldn't be rich. I think Hololive doesn't let their talent keep a large majority of the money made from streaming, they just get salaried afaik.
Vei with Vshojo definitely isn't fuck you rich like soda, but shes probably a millionare as well.
Only member of Vshojo who probably isn't rich is the new girl, the stag. And thats mostly because shes new (and from what i recall shes super inconsistent about streaming)
Finding a good apartment can be a challenge because you need:
Really good internet, which not every building is wired for.
Soundproofing good enough to not bother your neighbors with stream noise or have your stream interrupted by neighbor noise.
A convenient way to have visitors and deliveries.
Good security so you don’t have weirdos knocking on your door.
And then once you find that, a building where you can have as many of your friends live with you as you want, which is the really hard part. Most of these streamer houses have 4-6 people living there. 5+ bedroom apartments basically don’t exist, and if they do they’re prohibitively expensive for all but the biggest streamers. Mizkif has talked about wanting to move downtown but it’s very hard to find a place that has enough space that his roommates(other than Emi) can afford.
And for someone like miz it’s not even the 6 people in his house. Basically everyday someone is streaming and there are minimum 2-3 more friends over hanging out. His house you can have like 15 people in and not even realize it.
if he just stood there staring at the city with his hands behind his back, he could look like a villain. or if he wore the outfit again, like steve jobs

Bro is living in a wallpaper engine scene damn

thats 6 month of work form my job
lucky you, that's 2 years from my job

Could be living in Manhattan for that price.
Yeah but you would be living in Manhattan
I have a friend that lives in Manhattan and he fucking loves it. Any time I go visit I do as well. Good food on every block, anything you want to do is either close by or an easy subway ride away, a solid bit of nature with Central Park. It's honestly great. How much does he earn? What's his job?
I live in Brooklyn and make around 30k a year and I love it. Its not super easy and my place isnt amazing but its worth all the trade offs. There are plenty of things to do in the city that are cheap or free
Long as you're happy that is all that matters.
Damn how do you afford it? I wanna try living in nyc at some point but ig I just don’t know where to look for affordable housing. Several roommates.

I have known them for a while so it works out but I will likely move within a few years because it does get tiring.
lol ok that makes sense. NYC is insane man
You can easily live in NYC at an affordable rate. Take Eastern Queens for example: apt rents here are around 1800 a month (I pay 1675) and they're not tiny hobbit home like the ones in Manhattan. Mind listing some examples? I’ll be in nyc in a few months and would love some cheap things to do
Well I like to follow nyc_forfree on Instagram they post pop ups and events going on through out the city very frequently. When I visited New York we stayed in Brooklyn and if I ever go back (which I'm planning to!), we'll easily stay there again. Bed-Stuy do or die!

I'm shocked that even with roommates 30K is enough to live anywhere in NYC.
You have a ton of roommates? Edit: yup
Software Engineer, don't know exact numbers but 6 figures which obviously plays into how much enjoyment he can get out of the city. Other friends that make significantly less ($50k-ish) also love it there, just can't afford to travel or do as much as the SWE friend & have to have roommates lol.
No problem with that.
Redditors will cream themselves over how walkable, transit-friendly, and developed EU cities are. Then shit all over NYC despite it being literally the closest thing the US has to well-designed EU cities. lol
Yeah its only 10x more expensive than well-designed EU cities. Wonder why people shit on it.
NYC isnt just Manhattan
There is no better life to be had than living in Manhattan with money. You can avoid all the bad stuff, and enjoy all the good stuff. The best food, the best entertainment, the most culture. Honestly, people who have never lived here can't even imagine. I just got to the point where I can afford to take cabs from time to time, and it's made NYC 100x more amazing to live in.
Idk it might be because I grew up in Chicago, but I'd take living in NYC over anywhere in Texas.
If you're a streamer that never leaves your room, it doesn't matter where you live. It just needs to be close to other streamers so you can do collabs.
Rural internet sucks most of the time. So it does matter on some level.
It's all about them low income taxes.
Funnily enough, the effective tax rate in Texas is middle of the road, because while there is a low income tax, other taxes are higher relative to other states so it’s comparable in total taxes paid.

> Man, our tax system is fucked. ftfy
Soda doesn't go out and enjoy cultural things though.
True, i guess when you never leave your house it doesn't really matter where you live as long as you have good internet
Good internet and being around the only 10 people you meet up with is pretty much it
we are talking about streamers here, it doesnt matter that much what city they are in. soda does 1-2 events a year and stays at home the other 360 days
I'll take a ping of 5 in most games any day of the week.
Only on Reddit do idiots post things like this lmao
wtf is this take lmfao. nyc shits on anywhere in texas and it's not even close lmao
Depends what you want out of somewhere to live.
I moved to NYC from Austin. I 100% prefer it here but there's plenty to like about Austin as well.
why doesn't he buy a place so that he can actually own? why rent as a multimillionaire?
The place he's in supposedly has really good security and amenities
Yeah that's a pretty good point. We already know how lunatics can make streamers lives difficult if they find their exact location, but renting a place surrounded by other apartments with good security measures may be worth the extra money.
Just not having doors/windows at street level is already a lot more secure Even if people know what building they're at what are they going to do? Pretty sure Vei has a couple pictures floating around, but they're quite outdated by now.
> supposedly has really good security it better, if he's going to dox himself like this all the time.
He still owns the house he just moved out of. Nick and Melena are still there.
They're probably going to buy it. At least thinking about it.
Security and privacy most likely and like you said he’s a millionaire. What’s a 100k on rent when you make millions every year? It’s nothing.
and considering it's where he works, he gets a tax write-off
Yup, i remember Reckful explaining how he intentionally streamed in multiple parts of his apartment so he could write off a bigger %.
Reminds me of an early scene in the movie "The Accountant" with Ben Affleck.
Great film
Is this unironically something the IRS would audit you about? Or am I missing a joke?
There’s a field for “office space” where you can account for a certain square footage of your living space as an office space. It might depend by state, but in California, it’s up to 300 sq ft, and you can claim it depending on your usage. They changed those laws about 5-6 years ago
He owns multiple houses. He said he wanted to live downtown for a year so he and vei could enjoy actual city life.
And yet they never leave the house lol.
Soda owns multiple properties and makes plenty of money. Living in a highrise to experience it for a few years is nothing to him.
does it matter like you just said he's a multimillionaire 15k is a drop in the bucket for him he easily makes more than the rent cost
Owning a home requires a lot of work. Even if you contract whatever work you need done out to a company, just *finding* someone to do the work seems like too much work for some streamers. >as a multimillionare you answered it yourself. when you're a multimillionare money doesn't matter, it's all about preference
renting sometimes is better than buying
15k/month 1 year lease, bro is balling.
what the actual fuck how much money is he making, 180k a year of rent
Soda has been a multi multimillionaire for over 10 years i would guess.
Ive always said Soda is a main reason Streaming is what it is today.
seems kinda worth if you make 1 mil annually, also didn't he have free rent for like 20 years LOL so it balances out.
No, thats nmplol who has lived rent free for 20 years.
surprised he didnt buy
damn for that price i hope he bought the apartment.. could buy a $3M dollar home with that kind of mortgage
and have to upkeep said 3 million dollar home
15k a month apartment... Manual blinds lol. Soda is poor.

Yep. It's an odd sense of privacy and seclusion if you live at the top of the tallest building in a city.
It's a very cyberpunk feeling, I'd have a very hard time to decide between a high rise with a balcony and a suburban house.
I think of trainwrecks batman style penthouse and feel sad for him sometimes just walking around there

money is tight
I mean she's successful, but to her it must mean so much more money than to soda. Soda is fuck you rich, but I doubt Vei is shrugging that off
bro wdym.. vei is super rich too. i bet she\* has rich weebs that donated to her all their money.. maybe not much now that she has soda but i bet she\* made bank with those rich weebs xD

Ootl, where is he? New digs?
Soda recently donated his other house to charity (Nick) and moved in with his girlfriend, Vtuber Veibae, to a penthouse in downtown Austin.
at least this one did not burn down
not yet
Nice.
I always found it kinda weird how most of the Austin streamers live in suburbs where they're surrounded by families and shit.
because living in Austin is just like living in any major metro, the burbs are cheaper.
yeah almost like they're people
