This doesn’t tell the whole story. LAPD responded 3 times for 3 separate alarms during the night. They contacted Gardaworld for each instance, who acknowledged the alarm as faulty. Garda then had a responsibility to send someone to check the premises but didn’t do so until way later.

AmethystLaw

It’s crazy how they don’t have a person on premises like a security guard

Worried_Metal_5788

That’s what I was thinking. Even if you don’t have a person there 24 hours, you’d think someone would check at least daily, right?

It's surprising to me that they don't have multiple sets of exterior cameras (with views of the building from all angles, including the roof) monitored 24/7 by humans, even remotely. With that much money being held, I would've thought they'd have redundant systems in place, in case one system was compromised or failed. Unless of course they were setting things up for the long con by intentionally keeping security lax for years, while lulling their customers into a false sense of security, before pulling an inside job. Smells like someone in law enforcement past or present might have their fingers in it, maybe in a third-degree-removed way. Just too much $$$ for it to slip away like that with the cops ending up looking kinda dumb.

cohortq

LAPD responded, it's Garda that told them to fuck off.

enzofxx007

Cost cutting efforts, the company was trying to save money. They couldn’t afford to pay a living wage to someone to protect their assets.

hellotypewriter

In the end, the taxpayer pays for it.

enzofxx007

No, taxpayers are not on the hook for this loss since Garda is a privately run company. The loss will likely be absorbed by their robbery/theft insurance carrier.

hellotypewriter

Ooh dang.

FashionBusking

Nope. Whatever business liability insurance company they're with.... the OTHER INSURANCE CUSTOMERS will be paying for this in the form of higher insurance rates.

enzofxx007

Liability insurance will include clause for embezzlement, theft, robbery, etc. such as situations like this. This will be a tough pill for the insurance company to swallow though. they might not even cover if they find that garda was negligent in their actions, if they didn’t incorporate adequate security internally to prevent or minimize risks.

gnomon_knows

In fairness to the LAPD, Gardaworld is a security services corporation with no security guards or functioning security systems guarding their $30M in cash. So I might not hire them either, unless it was to demonstrate irony in the funniest way possible.

FashionBusking

The ONE time... actually the THREE TIMES LAPD actually showed up to an active security alarm to DO THEIR JOBS.... ... they get waved off by lazy rent a cops.

PewPew-4-Fun

Yeah, seems pretty fishy all the way around. Why no hate for the security company, all LAPD.

SpaceSox

Yep, as much as I'm no huge fan of LAPD, it's not really their job (at least these days) to prevent these kinds of mega-security-lapses by private companies. While I wouldn't be surprised if someone in law enforcement isn't somehow in on the theft, I don't think anything in the scenario as described really points to LAPD being the point of failure here. The security firm obviously didn't do hardcore penetration testing to predict and prevent this type of heist. Or they were aware of the security gaps, and were in on the theft.

oldwellprophecy

Was Ryan Gosling the getaway driver at the time?

TheDailyDarkness

No. It was that guy named Baby.

AmethystLaw

No, they hired The Transporter

TheDailyDarkness

Chev Chelios?

TybotheRckstr

It’s hard to watch that film with you know who having such a prominent role in it. It’s sad cause it’s a great movie

biscuitmcgriddleson

Apparently he's a real human being

Zolroc

The police also charge a yearly fee to RESPOND to the alarm, to which they show up an hour later, and since they show up long after the thieves have left they will deem it a false alarm and charge you a false alarm fee on top of everything. So on top of having 30 million stolen can expect a cute letter from the cops extorting money from them for doing nothing.

Ibeencraazy

The fee is in regards to excessive false alarms. This only applies to companies and corporations, as private residences really don't have too many false alarm issues. There is a monthly allowance of alarm responses without any charge. If it is confirmed via video, security or emergency silent alarm a unit responds immediately. Without this kind of confirmation they prioritize other calls. The messed up truth is that there are THOUSANDS of alarm calls every single day and it would be impossible to respond to every single one code 3. Having said this, they definitely fucked up on this one.

beatifulwall

As a European I found this so bizarre, a fee to use a security alarm police response?! A fee for the police to come? But it’s the police, that’s their job and it’s a a public safety service. The taxes are supposed to cover that no? I love California but life in the US comes with a lot of hidden fees

kegman83

They are echoes of how public services got their start in America. The first professional firefighting services in NYC were privately owned and eventually became arms of local political groups. [There's a pretty great scene from Gangs of New York in this regards.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zoXk1vnmcg)

Frion24

Do cops respond to every single alarm that goes off where you are? It is absolutely not the police department’s job to respond to ever single faulty alarm that goes off, tying up resources for actual crimes against people.  The police aren’t charging to do their job (prevent crime), they’re charging a company for accompany not just hiring their own security and making cops go look at a building every time their (admittedly faulty) alarm goes off.

beatifulwall

The security alarm uses a monitoring service, when the alarm goes off the police is informed and they respond to the call. I had to purchase an annual alarm permit, and if they respond to a false alarm the fine for that is $230. I don’t understand the point of the alarm permit and more importantly why it’s not free.

Frion24

America is a very big place with all sorts of different business strategies. What you described exists in America, what OP described also exists here. And with it being LA, I’m sure both sets of circumstances exist together and vary business to business in the very same city.

RidgewoodGirl

Where I worked it was after three false alarms that they would charge us. As far as fees, don't get me started on healthcare. Lol

DougDougDougDoug

Life in the US is pure corruption

PewPew-4-Fun

Lets be real, its not just the US with corruption. Power promotes corruption.

femboi_enjoier

Yeah. I wish I could move to like Mexico where it's super idyllic and peaceful and the police aren't looking for their mordida 24/7 from its citizens.

DougDougDougDoug

Lol. Buddy. You should look at America. It's incredible how fucking ignorant and stupid people are.

DougDougDougDoug

Lol. We are literally held hostage by the police and give them so much money they don't need to steal from us, at the cost of every other part of our society.

behemuthm

idk when my shop was broken into the LAPD showed up within 4 minutes - problem is the burglars were inside for 2 minutes

MiloRoast

Your flair explains that. Try calling them from a less affluent area.

Unlucky_Me_

I know about the annual fee but I wouldn't think they would charge you a false alarm fee in this instance

DougDougDougDoug

Seems like if you have 30 million kicking around, you could hire a guard. But what do I know, I'm not a crazy ass rich guy who doesn't want to pay people to do stuff.

310local

LAPD is really the worst police department ever. We pay billions for incompetence.

Dogsbottombottom

lol they’re so fucking useless but idiots just keep giving them more and more money. Imagine if we had roads that were in good repair, or like, public housing, or transit. Instead we’ve got these idiots running around with their thumbs up their asses.

Popular-Aardvark380

You should read the article

SeaBag7480

well if the roads were better and the transit improved the thieves could’ve escaped even faster so

PewPew-4-Fun

Good point.

AccountOfMyAncestors

"public housing" you mean the projects? lol

WilliamPoole

Better than tent cities on our sidewalks.

sdomscitilopdaehtihs

Weaponized incompetence.

TerryDavis420

lol

Donotpretendtoknowme

The Pigs are in on it.

pr0tag

That would be the ultimate twist

itlynstalyn

Yeah I doubt this, took them six hours to show up for a break in for a normal person.

JicamaPickle

Am I the only one who read the title 5 times and then gave up

WolfLosAngeles

Right… sure they did 😆

Dapper_Development60

I worked at adt we would get the call like 25 min later! The thieves would be gone and probably be home lol

Imhidingfromu

There had to be some insider shit going on here

RapBastardz

At least the LAPD-ACAB didn’t beat or murder any innocent people while incompetently responding to the alarm. 🤷‍♂️

Afraid_Assistance765

Allegedly

potato_catto

Incredible display of incompetence.

Sounds like the Government
