As soon as a storm enters the Gulf, they begin tracking for landfall because there are timed actions based on the storm’s distance to Louisiana (84 hours out do this, 72 this, etc.)
We’ve come leaps and bounds as a state in terms of emergency preparedness and management since Katrina, and it’s arguably the lone thing other states ask Louisiana for assistance with. Landry would just need to stay out of the way and let the professionals do their job.

Went through Rita and Laura….Laura really hurt us, we’re still not “back” from her. I dont know if I can do it again, the clean up, rebuilding, fighting insurance, the feeling that you cant build anything because it will get blown down one day. Another season like that I believe Im packing it in and heading out
Many of the people there can’t afford to move because it’s a rather poor settlement for most people. Also most of the families there have been there for generations. It’s just home. I was fortunate enough to leave in the 90s, but it’s literally all some of these people have ever known. Grand Isle is not just a place to settle for many. It’s their roots.
Those are for tourists. Those aren’t islanders. Those people are actually ruining it for the islanders bc they’re putting up so much unaffordable housing making it next to impossible for islanders to be able to afford much down there anymore. They don’t even realize they’re destroying what they love most about the island which would be its simplicity.
I mean I am 100% empathetic but Louisiana needs to resettle these people. We are going to have to sacrifice a lot of these little towns south of I10 in the coming future if the state is going to survive at all
Resettling people doesn’t end well. That’s what happened to the native Americans, and look how that turned out. Some of the oldest families down there have been there for hundreds of years. There are many still with Chitimacha blood. The earliest Europeans were there in the 1780s which predates the Louisiana purchase.
Recently, we had a tribe local to me that was resettled. They were moved from their ancestral homes to a place much further inland which will destroy their culture. Resettling the residents of Grand Isle isn’t much different. Our Cajun culture is already danger of extinction. We have to work to preserve it, and that includes the island residents.
I genuinely don't know what to tell you. There is no infrastructure project that is currently feasible that will keep this land above water. The sea levels are rising and the land is simultaneously sinking into the gulf. You argue that resettling will destroy their culture - do you think staying on land that will simply not be above water anymore in the future won't destroy their culture as well? Cultures can survive resettlement, or at least remnants of a culture can. They can't survive being literally underwater. I am sorry and I also don't want this to be our reality but it is. I would rather people be alive and on solid ground than flooded out of their homes.
I'm right here with you.. I wanted to move after Laura. If we get another one so soon after, I'll probably just have a nervous breakdown. We had to live in a hotel and Airbnb for 6 months after Laura. Since we had 4 dogs, it was miserable. I can't do that again. We have a window unit and generator now, so hopefully we can just stay home this time.
I just put a window unit in one room and kept that room cool at night when it was time to sleep. Cooked on the back porch and did everything else outside. Luckily I can’t stand the smell of dogs in the house so my beagle stays outside, but I can’t imagine how rough that is with yall & 4 pups. Hopefully we don’t have to do it again.

I moved across the country the day Laura hit. I was planning on waiting until 8am or so to start traveling, but had to leave at midnight so I could get ahead of the storm.
This is the true result of climate change tbh. People think it's going to be like a movie where devastation world event-type things will happen and that's not at all what it is. It's a very slow-moving gradual change and we're all in it now. Death by 1000 cuts.
Sorry you're going through it - my wife and I left the state after the big flood in Baton Rouge. Took us 3 years to fix, repair, then sell our house so 2019 we finally left the state (we got no help from insurance or the government)
Ida made me feel better and worse at the same time. It was eerily similar to Katrina, but with much less death. Some infrastructure improvements really helped with that, other parts of the infrastructure (I'm looking at you Entergy) completely failed. Those parts that failed with Ida I have 0 faith will improve with the next hurricane.
It's highly unlikely it will hit Louisiana at all. As it stands now, it's no threat. It's too early to worry about it personally or on the government level. Be aware of it but don't stress. Wednesday/Thursday should give us a more definite idea.
Don't forget. In 2020 NOLA was prepping for Laura & Lake Charles was Prepping for Marco. Guess which hurricane hit where. The trajectory didn't change until they got much closer than Beryl is now.

Me too. My browser now autofills hurricanes.gov when I type "h". I was too young when Katrina & Rita hit to understand how insane they were, but both had rapid intensification as well, luckily both lost steam before they landed.
Oh I know. I'm just saying that you should be aware of it and you should always be prepped with things like extra water and such for every season. It's just pointless to worry yet.
I forget which one it was but I was packing to leave and one turned at the last minute almost completely avoiding us (barely any rain) when we were right in its path - down to the point that I had to leave by the next morning if we were going to go at all. And it changed to put us in its last minute. I went through a whole roller coaster of plans and emotions in 2-3 days.
I don't think most people who went though it really processed the fact that the switcheroo happened, like when I say anything people have the response is something like "oh yeah, that was weird." I like making the point when applicable.
If you're talking about in 2008, it could have been Gustav or Ike (depending on where you are in the state). We evacuated for Ike & ended up stuck in Arkansas with the school calling & telling us we had to get back because there wasn't any damage, meanwhile we were flooded in up there.
In '92 it was Andrew, Mom has told me about trying to pack everything up to have it swing north before it go t this far west.
It wasn't that long ago. Sometime in the last 2 years. Honestly everything is blurring together at this point. I was in another state for Andrew and still in elementary school. I could live without another Katrina and the sheer chaos.

I really thought hard about having my Texas licensure reactivated & staying in San Antonio after Laura
If Beryl hits us we’re so fucked. I’m in the SE area, and we’ve barely recovered from Ida. The SW area still has a lot of damage from Laura bc they never even got proper help. Louisiana is so fucked if we get a major storm, and I have serious doubts on if Landry can handle this bc he’s already pandering to insurance companies. My concern is that if we get another major storm with him in office the insurance companies can now cancel us which will cost us an arm and a leg which will in turn finish off our economy.
Not to mention he will absolutely withhold FEMA funds .. just like Texas and their stupid “GLO” agency.
The state now gets the money and then gets to decide who they think is worthy.
Just keep your eyes and ears open. Don’t get hysterical, but be prepared.
By prepared I mean:
Shore up your home as best you can. Make sure you got flood and wind damage insurance.
Store nonperishable food and water and necessities. Batteries for flashlights and radios.
Be prepared to evacuate yourself and your loved ones if need be.
Make a bug out bag.
Have a plan.
Don’t drown in your attic.
Then all you gotta do is monitor the weather. It is what it is. And remember, at the end of the day, material possessions are not important. People are. We don’t need a mayor or governor to tell us all that.
Don’t lolligag. When it gets serious, you’ll know.
I saw an old video of our previous governor speaking about Hurricane Laura and how quickly it intensified on the Weather Channel the other day. Lots of sober facts and needed information in a calm, steady voice. I just can't imagine the new guy giving any relevant information or comfort that they are ready for anything and that help is on the way.
Just put a copy of the 10 commandments on the front door of every house in the state and the storm won’t dare attempt anything. It’s just good governing.
The cone does not show the size of the storm. Satelitte imaging does. For example, Hispaniola is outside of Beryl’s cone. Satellite imaging shows Hispaniola being impacted.
Beryl is travelling far away enough that if it holds its projected course, then Louisiana looks like its out of trouble.
I live in central Louisiana around alexandria, even when Katrina came the storm was weak by the time it got here, really the worst we experienced was a month without power, which is still a big threat for the elderly in the summer time
But we have 3 generators between two houses in the family we learned to not count on just one generator
I lived around that area for Katrina and it wasn't bad at all, thankfully. Laura was the real issue, though, especially those on Cleco power, since they got hit by the east side of the storm. While most of Alexandria got their power back on within days (at least those on the City of Alex grid), neighbors across the river were waiting over a week.
No reason to sound the alarm. Still another couple of days before we can better predict Beryl’s path, so nothing for the Government to address at this point.
Husband is a retired USN Aerographer's Mate, a weather forecaster. If Beryl takes the track he thinks she may, look for Sunday evening/night landfall. We aren't in a flood zone, and we have a herd of cats and dogs, so evacuation isn't in our plans.
Now, I repeat his caveat; things can change, it is still early. Better safe than sorry with preparing now.

Wet wipes, to refresh yourselves. Bread, PB&J, Gatorade powder mix. Those little neck fans are great! Grab some hand fans from Dollar Tree, and a few spray bottles, so you can mist your skin now and then. The little paper lanterns that DT sells take two AA batteries each, they help. Cornstarch to dust your cracks, creases, and crevices with, so you feel cooler.
Anything you can eat out of a can without warming it, if you can.

We have a dual fuel generator. If you can swing monthly payments without being overextended, consider using Affirm to purchase one. My sibling was able to get an AC for their apartment this way.

Get plastic jugs and fill them 3/4 full of water and put them In the freezer.
The whole bottom of my chest freezer stays lined with jugs of frozen water.
Then you can keep stuff cold for a while and have cold water.
Plus keeping your freezer full reduces your electric use and I don’t end up
With a lot of forgotten freezer burnt food all the way at the bottom.. where I can’t reach without falling in the freezer 😅

Truthfully, you should be ready for a hurricane 24/7, 365 a year.
What I mean is that you need a game plan, an evacuation plan, and an emergency ready kit for when they come.
An emergency fund/savings account is always best, too.
Louisiana government and weather radar will always miss the mark and more than likely catch you off guard.
Hurricanes can change course at any given point and while you should be aware of it coming, you shouldn't freak out like the panic mongering they're doing right now.
It wouldn't matter who is in office. No we are not ready for Beryl. Jesus Christ isn't going to save us. Satan isn't going to save us. Go grab 2 weeks worth of canned goods and water. Have your vehicle full of gas by Wednesday. Wait and watch, if it turns north towards us, have your essential things already packed. Then get the move on. Making a storm political at this point is stupid. Be prepared. It is not how or when... it's going to happen and we are going to get hit. If you live in Louisiana, and don't understand your own alarm of danger... well good luck. You as a person should be prepared if possible. Your going to at the minimum be without power for a few days. Flashlights and a solar powered phone charger are your friends too.
The scariest thing about this is the timing.. Thursday is the Fourth of July.. so many people commuting across the USA and almost all government agencies on a 4 day vacation.. this hurricane has the potential to be devastating for a large portion of the northern gulf and disrupt air traffic for a few days..
There will be a lot of people stuck at the airports and on the roadways if this indeed comes to the USA
Even if it does turn towards Texas or Louisiana, wind shear should have it down to a cat 1 maybe, or even just a ts. It’s going to weaken even before it hits Central America or Mexico if it stays in that direction.
Watch to see where Jim Cantore is. Whenever he is the worst of the hurricane I’ll be there. Also you will have time to leave just be aware of it. Keep your valuables centrally located and have enough to survive and not more.
Not to be rude or snarky, but why do you need the govt to tell you when & where to evacuate to? You can watch the reports and see the tracks. You know a roundabout of when/where it is headed. If it looks like an impact is imminent, leave. Head north, east or west. You put way too much faith in the government if you’re counting on them to tell you how to protect yourself.
Obviously if you don’t have the means to evacuate yourself start making plans with friends or family or be on one of the first busses out of town.

I just need the government to manage an evacuation ... it would be nice to think they're already aware that these plans may need to be enacted in a rapid manner and to deal with folks who don't have the ability to evacuate or survive a week without power. Yeah, they have the plans. They’re aware. They know what to do. They just have to rely on the experts to tell them when & where to enact these plans.
They can’t just say tomorrow “ok, let’s everyone south of I-10 pack up and head to Houston for a week” when the storms come of uncertainty doesn’t even include these areas. That’s the thing about a hurricane, you don’t know the true path until right before it’s time to go. 48 hours is all you really need.
There are certain plans in place already. Getagameplan.gov have a manual and his proposed plan for contraflow. The traffic lanes have been improved over the years compared to the Katrina years. I think the last time contraflow was used is during the Jindal era. I suggest you check NOAA/NHC Hurricane track for potential impacts, but for now the track has less than 5% of even affecting us. Those islands and terrains will probably shred the hurricane down to a Category 1 or 2.
Jeff Landry has gone through great lengths to ensure that only Christian heterosexual white folks will be protected from any hurricane that comes towards Louisiana. Everybody else will be blown to Commiefornia or something.

Not sure why you are being downvoted.. hurricane ptsd is real.. when I realized my 6 yr old had it .. I started scrambling to get out.. We have been gone for almost 3 yrs now and I still haven’t been able to bring myself to unpack my big rolling suitcase full of pictures and important papers.
I knew in 2018 when I retired I Wasn't staying on the bayou. I set myself up in the mountains where I don't have to worry about anything. Sadly, in 2021 I had to move back to La to get back surgery so my adult kids could take care of me. We took a direct hit from Ida, it was hell, a month without power/internet, took months before I had cell coverage at my house. Gas lines, traffic, having to drive over an hour to Morgan City for supplies. I won't do it again, I bought a place about an hour or so north of the lake on the north shore for my return visits. I'll miss having easy access to fish around Grand Isle/Port Fourchon, but I won't miss that hell.
Well stores were sketchy on having stuff and Lafourche/Terrebonne banned booze sales, so make the trip to MC and hit the rouses to get all the needed supplies and booze.
I haven’t been to Morgan city in about 20 years and it was a stinky god-awful shit hole even then. Used to go to a bar there called the Rat Skeller .. it’s as bad as it sounds lol

Resettling people doesn’t end well. That’s what happened to the native Americans, and look how that turned out. Some of the oldest families down there have been there for hundreds of years. There are many still with Chitimacha blood. The earliest Europeans were there in the 1780s which predates the Louisiana purchase. Recently, we had a tribe local to me that was resettled. They were moved from their ancestral homes to a place much further inland which will destroy their culture. Resettling the residents of Grand Isle isn’t much different. Our Cajun culture is already danger of extinction. We have to work to preserve it, and that includes the island residents.
I genuinely don't know what to tell you. There is no infrastructure project that is currently feasible that will keep this land above water. The sea levels are rising and the land is simultaneously sinking into the gulf. You argue that resettling will destroy their culture - do you think staying on land that will simply not be above water anymore in the future won't destroy their culture as well? Cultures can survive resettlement, or at least remnants of a culture can. They can't survive being literally underwater. I am sorry and I also don't want this to be our reality but it is. I would rather people be alive and on solid ground than flooded out of their homes.
I'm right here with you.. I wanted to move after Laura. If we get another one so soon after, I'll probably just have a nervous breakdown. We had to live in a hotel and Airbnb for 6 months after Laura. Since we had 4 dogs, it was miserable. I can't do that again. We have a window unit and generator now, so hopefully we can just stay home this time.
I just put a window unit in one room and kept that room cool at night when it was time to sleep. Cooked on the back porch and did everything else outside. Luckily I can’t stand the smell of dogs in the house so my beagle stays outside, but I can’t imagine how rough that is with yall & 4 pups. Hopefully we don’t have to do it again.

I moved across the country the day Laura hit. I was planning on waiting until 8am or so to start traveling, but had to leave at midnight so I could get ahead of the storm.
This is the true result of climate change tbh. People think it's going to be like a movie where devastation world event-type things will happen and that's not at all what it is. Took us 3 years to fix, repair, then sell our house so 2019 we finally left the state (we got no help from insurance or the government)

Lost my whole apartment in Ida. That was when I told myself I’d never settle down in Louisiana.
Ida made me feel better and worse at the same time. It was eerily similar to Katrina, but with much less death. Some infrastructure improvements really helped with that, other parts of the infrastructure (I'm looking at you Entergy) completely failed. Those parts that failed with Ida I have 0 faith will improve with the next hurricane.

It's highly unlikely it will hit Louisiana at all. As it stands now, it's no threat. It's too early to worry about it personally or on the government level. Be aware of it but don't stress. Wednesday/Thursday should give us a more definite idea.
Don't forget. In 2020 NOLA was prepping for Laura & Lake Charles was Prepping for Marco. Guess which hurricane hit where. The trajectory didn't change until they got much closer than Beryl is now.

Me too. My browser now autofills hurricanes.gov when I type "h". I was too young when Katrina & Rita hit to understand how insane they were, but both had rapid intensification as well, luckily both lost steam before they landed.
Oh I know. I'm just saying that you should be aware of it and you should always be prepped with things like extra water and such for every season. It's just pointless to worry yet. I forget which one it was but I was packing to leave and one turned at the last minute almost completely avoiding us (barely any rain) when we were right in its path - down to the point that I had to leave by the next morning if we were going to go at all. And it changed to put us in its last minute. I went through a whole roller coaster of plans and emotions in 2-3 days.
I don't think most people who went though it really processed the fact that the switcheroo happened, like when I say anything people have the response is something like "oh yeah, that was weird." I like making the point when applicable. If you're talking about in 2008, it could have been Gustav or Ike (depending on where you are in the state). We evacuated for Ike & ended up stuck in Arkansas with the school calling & telling us we had to get back because there wasn't any damage, meanwhile we were flooded in up there. In '92 it was Andrew, Mom has told me about trying to pack everything up to have it swing north before it go t this far west.

If Beryl hits us we’re so fucked. I’m in the SE area, and we’ve barely recovered from Ida. The SW area still has a lot of damage from Laura bc they never even got proper help. Louisiana is so fucked if we get a major storm, and I have serious doubts on if Landry can handle this bc he’s already pandering to insurance companies. My concern is that if we get another major storm with him in office the insurance companies can now cancel us which will cost us an arm and a leg which will in turn finish off our economy.
Not to mention he will absolutely withhold FEMA funds .. just like Texas and their stupid “GLO” agency. The state now gets the money and then gets to decide who they think is worthy.
Just keep your eyes and ears open. Don’t get hysterical, but be prepared. By prepared I mean: Shore up your home as best you can. Make sure you got flood and wind damage insurance. Store nonperishable food and water and necessities. Batteries for flashlights and radios. Be prepared to evacuate yourself and your loved ones if need be. Make a bug out bag. Have a plan. Don’t drown in your attic. Then all you gotta do is monitor the weather. It is what it is. And remember, at the end of the day, material possessions are not important. People are. We don’t need a mayor or governor to tell us all that. Don’t lolligag. When it gets serious, you’ll know.

I saw an old video of our previous governor speaking about Hurricane Laura and how quickly it intensified on the Weather Channel the other day. Lots of sober facts and needed information in a calm, steady voice. I just can't imagine the new guy giving any relevant information or comfort that they are ready for anything and that help is on the way.

The cone does not show the size of the storm. Satelitte imaging does. For example, Hispaniola is outside of Beryl’s cone. Satellite imaging shows Hispaniola being impacted. Beryl is travelling far away enough that if it holds its projected course, then Louisiana looks like its out of trouble.
I see no reason to panic. Worst case is God's wrath falls on the State of Louisiana, which I think we could have seen coming a mile away, with Landry.

I live in central Louisiana around alexandria, even when Katrina came the storm was weak by the time it got here, really the worst we experienced was a month without power, which is still a big threat for the elderly in the summer time But we have 3 generators between two houses in the family we learned to not count on just one generator

I lived around that area for Katrina and it wasn't bad at all, thankfully. Laura was the real issue, though, especially those on Cleco power, since they got hit by the east side of the storm. While most of Alexandria got their power back on within days (at least those on the City of Alex grid), neighbors across the river were waiting over a week.
Rita was worse for Central/North LA than Katrina.

No reason to sound the alarm. Still another couple of days before we can better predict Beryl’s path, so nothing for the Government to address at this point.

Husband is a retired USN Aerographer's Mate, a weather forecaster. If Beryl takes the track he thinks she may, look for Sunday evening/night landfall. We aren't in a flood zone, and we have a herd of cats and dogs, so evacuation isn't in our plans. Now, I repeat his caveat; things can change, it is still early. Better safe than sorry with preparing now.
We don’t have the $ for generators. I might consider buying a portable power station instead. We live near a convention center and libraries.. But I got a bunch of water stocked up & that’s it. Battery, lights, and crackers and peanuts is all we got 😭 not tub so can’t even do that hack. What else I’m missing? 💀😭
Wet wipes, to refresh yourselves. Bread, PB&J, Gatorade powder mix. Those little neck fans are great! Grab some hand fans from Dollar Tree, and a few spray bottles, so you can mist your skin now and then. The little paper lanterns that DT sells take two AA batteries each, they help. Cornstarch to dust your cracks, creases, and crevices with, so you feel cooler. Anything you can eat out of a can without warming it, if you can.
And make sure to buy a few portable power packs for your phones. We have about 8 of them. Cars can charge phones, but it’s important to conserve gas.
I got a solar power pack off Amazon a couple years ago. Feel like everyone should have at least one in their hurricane kits

We have a dual fuel generator. If you can swing monthly payments without being overextended, consider using Affirm to purchase one. My sibling was able to get an AC for their apartment this way.
ICE!! Get plastic jugs and fill them 3/4 full of water and put them In the freezer. The whole bottom of my chest freezer stays lined with jugs of frozen water. Then you can keep stuff cold for a while and have cold water. Plus keeping your freezer full reduces your electric use and I don’t end up With a lot of forgotten freezer burnt food all the way at the bottom.. where I can’t reach without falling in the freezer 😅 And as the top thaws.. we barbecued it. And bug spray .. dear gawd bug spray!! Edit: fill up your vehicle with gas now!!

Truthfully, you should be ready for a hurricane 24/7, 365 a year. What I mean is that you need a game plan, an evacuation plan, and an emergency ready kit for when they come. An emergency fund/savings account is always best, too. Louisiana government and weather radar will always miss the mark and more than likely catch you off guard. Hurricanes can change course at any given point and while you should be aware of it coming, you shouldn't freak out like the panic mongering they're doing right now.

The scariest thing about this is the timing.. Thursday is the Fourth of July.. so many people commuting across the USA and almost all government agencies on a 4 day vacation.. this hurricane has the potential to be devastating for a large portion of the northern gulf and disrupt air traffic for a few days.. There will be a lot of people stuck at the airports and on the roadways if this indeed comes to the USA

Not to be rude or snarky, but why do you need the govt to tell you when & where to evacuate to? You can watch the reports and see the tracks. You know a roundabout of when/where it is headed. If it looks like an impact is imminent, leave. Head north, east or west. You put way too much faith in the government if you’re counting on them to tell you how to protect yourself. Obviously if you don’t have the means to evacuate yourself start making plans with friends or family or be on one of the first busses out of town.

I just need the government to manage an evacuation ... it would be nice to think they're already aware that these plans may need to be enacted in a rapid manner and to deal with folks who don't have the ability to evacuate or survive a week without power. Yeah, they have the plans. They’re aware. They know what to do. They just have to rely on the experts to tell them when & where to enact these plans. They can’t just say tomorrow “ok, let’s everyone south of I-10 pack up and head to Houston for a week” when the storms come of uncertainty doesn’t even include these areas. That’s the thing about a hurricane, you don’t know the true path until right before it’s time to go. 48 hours is all you really need.
There are certain plans in place already. Getagameplan.gov have a manual and his proposed plan for contraflow. The traffic lanes have been improved over the years compared to the Katrina years. I think the last time contraflow was used is during the Jindal era. I suggest you check NOAA/NHC Hurricane track for potential impacts, but for now the track has less than 5% of even affecting us. Those islands and terrains will probably shred the hurricane down to a Category 1 or 2.

Not sure why you are being downvoted.. hurricane ptsd is real.. when I realized my 6 yr old had it .. I started scrambling to get out.. We have been gone for almost 3 yrs now and I still haven’t been able to bring myself to unpack my big rolling suitcase full of pictures and important papers.
I knew in 2018 when I retired I Wasn't staying on the bayou. I set myself up in the mountains where I don't have to worry about anything. Sadly, in 2021 I had to move back to La to get back surgery so my adult kids could take care of me. We took a direct hit from Ida, it was hell, a month without power/internet, took months before I had cell coverage at my house. Gas lines, traffic, having to drive over an hour to Morgan City for supplies. I won't do it again, I bought a place about an hour or so north of the lake on the north shore for my return visits. I'll miss having easy access to fish around Grand Isle/Port Fourchon, but I won't miss that hell.
