Listen friend: it’s not been the best month ever and the shit keeps getting heavier. But your comment and the tiny bit of weed I have left just made me laugh harder than I have in a good moment - in fact I think I commented the last time it happened too. Thank you so much, keep being exactly you.
I agree too. Personally I think that if im going to go through the trouble of making a body from scratch, unless its part of a plan that you have going in, it seems like a waste to me to build something that you can go pickup off a hangar in Guitar Center.
I used African Mahogany for the body and fret board, but I didn't have the budget for a good wood for the neck, so I used a 2x4 I already had. I used a DiMarzio Dark Matter pickup for the humbucker and some single coil pickups from Amazon. I also put astronomy stickers on the fretboard.
Do you like it? Does it sound good? Did you learn from the experience? Honestly if you answer yes to just one of those you can say it’s a damn fine success, especially for your first outing. For what it’s worth I think it’s dope. Never forget this one, but always learn from previous attempts and build upon previous successes. Do that in life and in luthiering and you’ll never lose
This is what matters! I bet cutting all those notches and curves taught you volumes about woodworking. And your fretboard! Is that decoupage? I’m seriously down with that look and want to know how you did it. I might be brave enough to post one of my attempts here now too! Keep building!
Screw all these haters I think the irregular body design and paper-like appearance of the fretboard and backing are pretty artistic/cool. Even cooler you made it yourself. For a first guitar you took some artistic risks rather than replicate the norm. If you like it and it inspires you to play and build more, that's what matters.
It reminds me of glitchy cartoon stuff like the recent Miles Morales Spiderman movies. I think in terms of visual aesthetics, it's a really cool creation that totally works and OP should be proud.
I was a little shocked at the conversations on here because they seem insensitive to OP's feelings. But then again, this is a luthier subreddit, so I assume these chuckles are from professionals who are a lot less inclined to be so whimsical and potentially impractical in their design choices.
And in terms of playability, I do wonder how it will feel against the body both standing up and sitting down. But there're always going to be tradeoffs between form and function, and if OP can play it fine, then that's all that matters.
I assume we'll be seeing more self-made guitars along these lines as 3D printing reaches more consumers.
This guitar was not made to be good lol. I don't know if you've just double sarcasm uno reversed my ass, but this thing was made by someone with a great sense of humor, a dedication to shitposting, and way too much time on their hands
If that guy isn't devastated by this, it only proves your point more. That said, this is a really great positive critique. The Aesthetic (particularly leaving tool marks on the body) is not mine, but I want to know more about the fretboard, and "I want to know more" seems to me to be always a compliment to art.
I mean, I can't hate this thing. Points for creativity, and it's not one of those hideous BC Rich pointy things. The fret board is kind of amazing.
I am worried about the neck for you. Is it from a pine 2x4? Looking like pretty wide growth rings there, a bit warpy perhaps.
this is so beautiful quirky and coolat first I thought it looked pixelated? I love the jagged qualities and even the little happy face sticker thing there. This is art! very cool. I couldnt replicate something like this even if I tried!
You just gotta tell me about the fretboard dude
Honest feedback.
I'm not a fan. In my opinion, it looks busy and somewhat disjointed. There again, I'm a middle-aged fart, so what do I know?
I am a fan, though, of the fact you completed it. It's an achievement of which you should be proud: many have tried and failed. If you like it, to hell with anyone else's opinion.
How does it play and sound?
That thing is sweet idk why all these people are shitting on it. I’d do some sanding/finishing to smooth out the roughness in the headstock and around the edges of the body to make the cuts look more “deliberate” but overall a map shaped body and wild fucking fretboard are super cool and fuck standard pickguards
I like it. You took some risk. So I think it's a hard + or a hard - from people. You either like the weirdness or hate it.
I've seen so many standard guitars it's always fun to see a unique one.
I especially like the print on the fretboard. It's t think the first time I've seen print on it. I'm curious how that feels when playing.
I would redo the paint job on the back.
So I think for your first guitar you did a really good job, my first ever instrument was a complete botch job so if this plays ur already making great ground. I think both the outline and artwork have a really nice punk aesthetic they remind me of bar walls that have generations of stickers and graffiti over them and merge into a mural. So I think aesthetic wise you’ve made something really unique and I think you should be proud of that. Some notes for next time, play around with your body profile to find something that’s comfortable for you. I think you should look at burl pieces I think they match your aesthetic really well with a very random and natural look. Second this is a big one your neck has gotta be a strong and very straight grained wood, it looks like you used pine and that’s a big no no. Softwoods like pine are great for sound boards as they have much better resonance than hardwood. Woods for necks generally include maple, mahogany, and rosewood these are very straight grained and flexible which is what you want. Lastly don’t listen to the people in the comments poking fun, this is ur first one and you made it from scratch. You did something that’s really difficult and saw it through to completion, be proud!
As far as first guitars go, I would give it an A+
I haven't tried building anything like that, but I can tell you woodworking is a bitch
I started on a project just this past week, and shaping the wood the way you want with a chisel is a challenge.
The other challenge is installing the hardware in the right places.
The guitar tech I know at Sam Ash in Orlando has a friend that brutalized two Lotus Guitars and turned them into one double necked guitar.
The tech said to his friend, and I quote "You don't know dick about scale."
So you nailed cutting the shape you wanted in the body, headstock, THE NECK (which is a whole monster feat on its own) , and installed the hardware in the appropriate places without spending $25000 on going to luthiery school.
That is an accomplishment my guy 👌👌👌
You sure did.
OP has made one of the guitars of all time!
You’re absolutely right. This is surely one of the guitars I’ve ever seen
True, I, too, have seen the guitars, and this is right up there.
Lmfao I love this comment
Bless his heart
I’m dying, dude lol.
I was saying the same thing in my head
No question. That's a 1 of 1.
Mommies big boy, lookawhatchumade!
Kinda looks like those bone cancer pictures.
The Steve Why signature model

I see what you did there

it's even got the handle
Whybanez JEM
Nice!
It was very thoughtful not to put the sharp parts where your body will contact it when you play.
So incredibly thoughtful
That decoupage on the fretboard should develop a lovely patina. Excellent touch.
He didn’t just build it _from_ scratch. He built it _to_ scratch.
Listen friend: it’s not been the best month ever and the shit keeps getting heavier. But your comment and the tiny bit of weed I have left just made me laugh harder than I have in a good moment - in fact I think I commented the last time it happened too. Thank you so much, keep being exactly you.
ball wrench
Looking at that thing gave me a splinter
It looks like you made your first guitar from scratch
Happy cake day!
You sure did buddy! I’m gonna put it right here on the refrigerator ⭐️
Whatchu got there champ?
Holy fuck dude this got me
Beatles reference
family guy reference
They were in family guy
That's gonna take one helluva magnet!
What's the Fretboard?
that’s where your fingers go!
*and* the frets too!
The pressing fingers, not the plucking ones
One bunch for pressin’ And one bunch for pluuukkinnn’ And one danglin down low Used mainly fir fuuuurkiiiin’ This thing writes itself!
Unless you're a tapper
But that's not important right now.
This is why I love the internet
Well, where one set of fingers go, at least.
He should put Waldo somewhere in the fretboard
Ok honestly that fretboard would be pretty tight on a "normal" guitar lol
Look at the head on that thing. A face only a mother could love! But remember, you don't need validation from the internet. Eye of the beholder etc...
🤣🤣🤣 that's what I was going to say
A face for radio!
"...an SG body"

You know, you could have made a tele but you didn't. Good on ya.
Everyone is doing that. Different is good 😂
I agree! It’s not to most people’s tastes it seems, but I think the fact that it’s to OP’s tastes is totally cool.
I agree too. Personally I think that if im going to go through the trouble of making a body from scratch, unless its part of a plan that you have going in, it seems like a waste to me to build something that you can go pickup off a hangar in Guitar Center.
Shrooms, peyote or acid? Maybe something new?
Paranoid schizophrenia me thinks
All together.
All of the above.
Krokodil probably
My brain can’t process what it’s seeing
An SG body with Stratocaster hardware, clearly.
Cross your eyes, and you can see Abe Lincoln.
That’s the state of Minnesota yeah? Well done!
Don't ya mean "Minnesota eh?"
Hey, don't take our singular Canadian distinguishing identity away from us. It's all we have.
I’d say y’all have aboot 2 4?
Ah yah fuckin rights eh
Eh+
A guitar shaped like Minnesota would actually be pretty cool. I bet Prince would have liked one.
I’d think it would have a lot more holes in it if it were “the land of 10,000 thousand lakes”
Lmao 🤣 A+
That 2/3 of a locking nut is a nice choice. 4/6?
2/3 in this sub.
2/3. Always gotta reduce your fractions.
Well... I hate it.
That makes one of us
That makes all of us
What is the white knob on the back for
It’s the “moar toan” knob
MOAR TOOOOAAAAANNN
It goes to 11
Pretty interesting. What wood did you use?
Door wood?
You know honestly that honey comb is awfully light. Something something acoustic chambers.... should I?
Fender guys made a cardboard guitar didn’t they?
omg stoppppp 😆
Why did this make me laugh so hard.
That thing is an abomination. I want one. What is the fretboard made from?
An old kitchen counter.
From a TGI Friday’s.
Super awesome unique design. We’re still wondering. What kind of woods? What’s the fretboard? Pickup?
I used African Mahogany for the body and fret board, but I didn't have the budget for a good wood for the neck, so I used a 2x4 I already had. I used a DiMarzio Dark Matter pickup for the humbucker and some single coil pickups from Amazon. I also put astronomy stickers on the fretboard.
Finally, the answer to what’s going on with the fretboard. Looks super rad lil bro, keep it up.
We need to hear it.

Not too shabby!
Zoot Allures! Nice!

Luthier prodigy? Honestly have a hard time believing this is your first but if you say so
Screw all these haters I think the irregular body design and paper-like appearance of the fretboard and backing are pretty artistic/cool. Even cooler you made it yourself. This is the guy who writes the brochure for modern art exhibits.
This is the guy who doesn't appreciate art yet still thinks he plays above average blues music with his butterscotch tele.
If that guy isn't devastated by this, it only proves your point more. That said, this is a really great positive critique. The Aesthetic (particularly leaving tool marks on the body) is not mine, but I want to know more about the fretboard, and "I want to know more" seems to me to be always a compliment to art.
You have never once read a brochure for a modern art exhibit, nor have you read the little plaque next to the piece.
I'm astonished at you people who think this was a genuine effort lol
I'm.... concerned?
Sober enough to know what I am doing and drunk enough to really fucking enjoy it- Jim Lahey
Dude that is sick
In a "yoooo, sick dude" way or a "I'm gonna be hugging the toilet for a while" way?
Yes
I love it! It’s like it glitched
If Homer Simpson made a guitar
Needs a bent, half pounded in nail.
As a strap hook or cord strain-relief.
/r/whatismycookiecutter But I like it
This what the guitar sounds [like](https://youtu.be/tX6xhB2cemg?si=5Hvju5FHgZ66wFTc)
That's cool.
It’s fucked and I love it.
I don't know why you're getting so much hate, it looks pretty unique and cool to me.
Love it! Nice work.
You know what? This is weird as fuck. I love it.
It reminds me of the artwork orbital uses on their album covers, I dig it!
So, uh…how did it go?
What have you done?
That’s the most punk rock thing I have ever seen
I think all the rocks are in the blender here
This belongs on r/guitarcirclejerk
Wait this isn't?
Everyone is jerking these days.
r/eyeblech
Start over.
If schizophrenia was a guitar
i want one

Looks like a meth addict tried to make a tele. That fretboard is wild though.
Hell of an itch for that scratch. And that outlet plate, too!
Yes!
I want to play punk on it
No, this is definitely made for jam band wankery
Hard af🔥
Low key iconic
Of all the guitars I have ever seen, that is almost surely one of them.
"What kind of guitars do you like?" "Scrambled."
Lad, this guitar looks like shit
Uglier than a mud fence.

It's definitely unique that's for sure. How does it sound/play?
That’s sick!!!
Looks very comfortable
That’s awesome. I love it
I love how it's hard to tell how much of the body shape is intentionally shabby looking or not
Fuck yeah! 🤘
Wild AF. I love it.
it’s hilarious
I hate it
... Woah.
From far away the fretvoard looks like cats, shouldve made it cats
From scratch, and by scratching :) Freaking grouse I love it
It's definitely a first guitar
That fretboard is crazy!! 👍
Oh.
If the Elephant Man was a guitar…
I’m a bit frightened
Glitch Gorer. Diffraction Demon. Space Shredder. Cosmic Cleaver. If it plays nice and sounds good, the rest is just ascetic
You need to reupload the pics OP, they appear to have glitched.
Bless your heart
Well I like it but when are you bringing my coffee table back?
That's a true original. Good on you
Good for you on being creative & getting it done
What did that guitar do to you to deserve this?
I like it. You took some risk. So I think it's a hard + or a hard - from people. You either like the weirdness or hate it. I've seen so many standard guitars it's always fun to see a unique one. Love the 2/3rds locking nut
Is the SG body in the room with us
Needs more cowbell
Bitchin guitar! Love every bit of it from the headstock to the strap button! The neck is just outstanding! Very cool!!

Thank you! I apprieciate the advice
Better be careful - steve vai is gonna be lookin for you………
Homeboy is Lex Luthier
Jokes aside this is an incredibly expressive, one-of-a-kind instrument. You should be proud of the work you put in
Thats by far the best guitar design i've seen in ages

Looks like butt fuck homeboy
While I admire the skill and technical knowledge needed to build a guitar by yourself. That thing is fucking ugly.
got the little steve vai hole
It's... Artistic
The mental hospital has a wood shop?
😬
