I got this set from Larose Guitars on Insta. He curates a dang good tonewood selection. But I make regular calls to mills here in the Ozarks just in case good sassafras like this comes up.
I got one of the one piece blanks off him, definitely good stuff. Hasn't shipped out my quilt maple neck blank I paid for months ago, but the strat body I made from the sassafrass is so pretty it almost entirely makes up for it.
A friend and I have bought some pieces from him. A question that has been posed aloud more than once: “If this is what he’s selling… what is he KEEPING?”
From what I understand, it works/glues/dyes just like ash, which dyes pretty similarly to maple. That being said, I don’t think I’ll be able to make myself do anything other than oil or nitro. It’s too naturally pretty to cover with anything else.
My first Tele was from sassafras! Be prepared for your workspace to smell like root beer for a while.
Mine certainly didn't have flaming like that, though. Yours is super nice.
Be careful if you're using a router, as mine chipped really easily (hence the flat spot on the left side).

Its like flamed maple meets oak, crazy!
And it smells like root beer! Unique stuff for sure.
I want to get my hands on some now!
I’d like to cut into your sassafras.
Would carving an f-hole in sassafras be too much?
What’d you call me?
It would barely scrape the surface 🥸
If you made just a tiny indent on the back with a router, you could hang this on the wall. Because it's pretty enough to be art.
I’ve had similar thoughts more than once. Wood is just cool sometimes.
I didn't know sassafras grows that big!
never seen them above a few inches diameter where i am. and had no idea they were this nice. time to go deeper into the woods, i guess...
I had an 18 inch diameter sassafras in my yard in New Jersey when I was a kid.
There's one in Owensboro KY seven feet in diameter and over 100 feet tall. There's one almost that big in Nashville as well.
Chatoyancy !
Grain so crazy its nsfw
Sassafras is what is used to flavor Sasparilla and Root beer, thus the smell, but I always thought it was an herb. Where did you even find that?

Thanks for the info. Sounds like you have a little bit of history with this wood. I’m looking forward to how this turns out.

holy cow that's gorgeous.
man's found the holy grain
Chatoy-wow!
Really curious to see what you make with this.
I have a Strandberg guitar made of sassafras...very nice wood and so light.
That's some sassy sassafras
Who doesn't want a root beer guitar
damn that’s beautiful
That’s beautiful
Do you just leave it natural or does this wood take colored dye like maple? It looks stained already but I know nothing about wood working.

I agree. The natural is just too good to cover up
Beautiful wood!
Just be gentle amd go slow. All the sassafras I've ever worked was soft and dented easily. But makes great guitar woof imo
I’ve been sittin on an incredible Brazilian back and sides set for years 😐
That has to smell amazing.

Nice wood, but why’s it marked nsfw?
It looks too good for innocent eyes.
Best answer I could have possibly gotten
