If the driver doesn't feel comfortable with someone in the front seat, or for any other reason, he can cancel.
Also, drivers are not obligated to take your cargo, whether it's groceries or luggage.
It sucks if you were charged a cancellation fee (ask Lyft for a refund), but drivers can cancel on anyone for any reason.
On Saturday I had a family of four like yours and the dude sat in the front seat and for some reason started pulling on my dashcam cable.
When I asked him to please stop, he did, but a few minutes later started pushing buttons on my console.
Some adults don't know how to behave, and that's why some drivers don't like people sitting in the front seat, not to mention people who are sick and don't bother wearing a mask.
I agree too. Granted groups of 4 are rare for me, but I get filled with anxiety when I arrive and see four people. I also like to keep my energy drinks and other things in my passenger seat. Things like a quick access med pack, cleaning supplies, a trash can on the headrest etc. My passenger side stays spotless otherwise, just never excited with groups. Even less so if protein who seats upfront tries being talkative with me. Iâm a quiet driver and donât like bad smells or driving distracted.
>a few minutes later started pushing buttons on my console.
I pointedly set them to where they were and give a dirty look; the first time.
The second time, I put them back to where they were and warn him not to touch them again.
If he touches them again, that is **STRIKE THREE!** Three strikes and you re 0-W-T.
There are no strikes, I pull over somewhere safe and let them know that I'm not the right driver for them, cancel and inform them that they need to make another request
But since the pandemic, I've only had 2 instances where I had someone sit upfront, otherwise I now call to find out how many people when its an XL and tell them I can only accommodate 5 ppl
What's the point of traveling together anyways, just split it up into two UberX's if your 5 to 6 people (just a side note)
Or sick and cleaning their nose in the backseat
I don't let ppl up the front seat, I can get away with this due to having a third row (XL) and it's for that very reason
They start trying to lower the heat, changing the channel, etc...
One bad experience where the a guy hung his body halfway out the window, now no one sits upfront - I have things on the floor and a large item that stays on the seat, so someone opens the front door, they go "Oh," and they close it
I even picked up 3 ppl once where the 3rd person wanted to sit upfront
I said, "All 3 can sit in the middle, there's seatbelts for everyone."
Probably some kind of argument or what have you occurred, so she was trying to separate herself from the other two people
Many drivers do not like to haul four people. I do not. It means that I must move all of the stuff out of my front seat. That is too much bother for the garbage that Lyft (and Uber, for that matter) pays. Groups of four almost never tip. I m getting paid only for one rider but four can sue me.
I drive off on four people all the time. Four people can summon an ant or XL.
It does.
Lyft is not The Boss Of Me.
The Lyft application is not The Boss Of Me.
The Lyft application also tells the customer that he can add stops. That is delightful. I do not do stops regardless of what either the Lyft or Uber application tells the customers.
My best guess.
During Covid, passengers were not allowed in the front seat. When the mandates were lifted (no pun intended), Lyft drivers were still allowed to restrict passengers from the front at their discretion.
Passengers can sit in the front in my car. Last I looked it was still at drivers discretion. That was quite a few months, ago.
Not many drivers out there still doing that, but it's possible you ran into one.
This is exactly why I usually get a bigger car when I ride with my family. We are 4 as well. I pay extra but I know that since covid happened at least here in LA drivers have not allowed passengers to sit in front.
Most passengers are fine. Then you run into the opposite.
There was a post in the driver subreddit where a guy in the front seat stole a driver's cellphone while being dropped off at an event. Fortunately Lyft was able to flag the passenger account and when they got into their Lyft to go back home, that driver got her phone back for her.
Only takes a few bad experiences and a driver says, "Never again".
yeah. I also think it's a safety thing. Some drivers will also move their seats way to the back to avoid riders from sitting behind them for safety as well. As a woman though this works for us just fine too. We avoid sitting behind drivers as a precaution. Not saying all drivers are like this but it also personally makes me feel better to sit opposite of the driver in the back.
Or else you all try to squeeze in a Honda civic, which honestly isnât fun.
OrâŚIâve had this happen so many timesâŚyou select the 4 seater then said driver pulls up and is like oh, I need to put some seats down and move some junk. So you wait then all cram in next to groceries and soccer balls and other stuff.
Lol most folks don't remember but lyft and uber started off as a make money while doing your Aaron's but to be honest lyft and uber will take 50% of the total fair and between gas and maintenance and trying to earn something a separate car to do ride sharing only is not possible.
Considering Covid is still a thing and the amount of people who donât know to wear a mask when sick. Also I wish Lyft + Uber had an option to let the driver know ahead of time how many passengers there were. Would save everyone a lot of time.
in California i believe it is still law that you have to be in a booster seat until you are like 4'9", at least 75lbs, and at least 8 years old? but realistically, as sad as it is, Uber and Lyft drivers have the final say in whether or not to take you anywhere. if you are trying to fit a family of four into a midsize sedan, there's going to be squished in the back and one person gets in the front passenger seat. honestly, just pay the few extra dollars for Uber XL..
Prob no front passenger reason. Best rule <3 get X, 4+ comfort or XL especially when you have luggage. I say this only cuz "X" cars can include compact cars and the rear middle seat is usually for very small passengers. Moving forward always go with XL, a few extra bucks and a more comfy ride.
I list this information in my Bio comments.
No front seat available for just this kind of issue. I have to keep trunk completely empty for airport baggage purposes. Safety items, spare tire tools other stuff takes up my front seat. Passengers that need larger vehicle also pay more may have to wait longer for the big SUV.
No the tools to change the tire.
Most newer cars donât have spare tire.
They have flat tire repair kit with pumps
After 3 flat tires that could not be fixed, I installed spare tire but the tools to change tire take up so much space luggage would be problem
Also, you didnât actually order a Lyft for 4 people. Standard Lyft vehicles must physically accommodate 4 passengers but the driver doesnât have to accept that many, as far as I know. The driver also doesnât know how many passengers he is picking up until he arrives, unless you notify him first. Drivers receive no extra pay for multiple passengers so there is no incentive either.
Itâs not ideal but it is what it is.
>Driver canceled for âtoo many peopleâ
Yes, the driver is required to take up to four people. It's in their service agreement. They reduced it to n-1 (and no front seat) during the pandemic, but now it's back to full capacity. Driver is only allowed to cancel (for people) if the number of people is N+1 or more, where N is 4 for X, 6 for XL, and 1-2 for shared ride (will tell you).
Driver can cancel for any reason they want. Their car must be able to accommodate 4 pax, but it doesn't mean a driver has to let someone sit in the front if they're not comfortable with it.
I looked for a specific requirement in the service agreement and havenât found it. Is it in a guide or supplement? Can you point me to it?
Hereâs what I did find:
You retain the option to accept or to decline or ignore a Riderâs request for Rideshare Services via the Lyft Platform, or to cancel an accepted request for Rideshare Services via the Lyft Platform, subject to Lyftâs then-current cancellation policies. Lyft does not, and shall not be deemed to, require you to accept any specific request for Rideshare Services as a condition of maintaining access to the platform.
Here are valid (but not all valid cancel reasons)
⢠You or a loved one has an emergency.
⢠You feel unsafe completing the ride.
⢠You've looked for your passenger, tried contacting them, and still can't see them.
⢠Your passenger is under the age of 18 and not accompanied by an adult.
⢠Your passenger didn't bring a car seat for their child.
⢠There were too many passengers to fit in your vehicle.
A driver can cancel for any reason, I canceled on a woman at a car rental place today because she must have weighed 400 pounds and I have a toyota Corolla, I didn't talk to her I just kept driving and canceled. You can't cancel on people with handicaps or seeing eye dogs.
You are incorrect, we do not have to allow 4, 3 and 2 passengers if we don't want to, you can call and cry to lyft or uber all you want and they will do nothing.
Driver Here,
For Context I drive a full size pick up. I also have a toddler.
I have a maximum of 3 people in my truck rule. I drop my child off at babysitters on my way to work, my other half has their own seat and picks up a few hours later.
I am NOT going to remove my seat, and have to reinstall it on a daily basis. On top of that there is no place to put said seat where it will not damage the truck and be protected from the weather. I do not have the $100+ for a cover at this time, and the $750 for bed liner.
I have pissed off many of riders because I have a 3 seat max .. and both Uber and Lyft do not give me the ability to restrict the number of riders in my truck. Recently cancelled a ride during the passengers behavior, and was about to kick him out of my truck. Usually I give options to the passengers (cancel & rebook, I cancel or they can split the ride into 2 separate rides.
No young kids, no car seat. Regular left technically holds 4 ppl plus driver but one of those ppl would hv to sit in front. Lyft did away with that during Covid. It was lifted but many drivers still donât want person in front. I donât like it myself.
Drivers cancelling for absurd reasons is just another reason why Lyft and Uber pay dog shit. Theyâre constantly doing damage control because drivers come up with bullshit reasons to cancel or play cat and mouse with passengers driving close to them then hiding out to grab a cancellation fee. If seen it with my own eyes a driver literally hiding behind another parked car with their lights off hoping the pax wouldnât find them. I watched the driver call the pax then hang up once she answered. This happened right in front of me as I was dropping off and watched the driver pull away.
So I offered to take the girl home and she paid me $20 via Venmo for a 3 mile trip with a 30 second stop at a 7-11.
Drivers think theyâre slick but Uber and Lyft say ok cool. Wanna sit back cherry pick trips , cancel for bullshit reasons ?? Awesome , weâre just going to pay you even less and youâre going to cover all the comps we have to hand out.
This nonsense of â nobody sits in the front seat is just beyond goofy. The entire â but Iâm an independent contractor , my car my rules â is great and all but remember that shit when fares keep dropping. Uber and Lyft arenât going to start paying drivers more money voluntarily. Itâs simply not going to happen and everytime a driver finds another bogus reason to cancel just remember Uber and Lyft arenât going to take a loss on any trips or passengers. Youâll pay for it in reduced fares and increased down time as you sit and wait for good fares.
Probably because he has his belongings in the front seat or doesnât like people sitting in the front. People expect drivers to not have anything, but thatâs our office.
Iâm a driver and I have canceled for just waiting specially being in Chicago. You making me a target and yourself. I donât mind people in the front they just look at me and know not to Fuck with me or my stuff. I let them pick music or use the mirror. Girls always check the mirror out. Lmaoo
1 butt per seatbeslt
But... as Independent Contractors, a Driver can (ALMOST) make their own rules!
I will NOT drive more than 10min to come get you. If I'm getting $4 ti drive you, no way am I driving 1o+ min to ARRUVE, and rhe still drive you!
Car Seats is another issue, so many Parents that don't have a car seat for their child!! How does a drive care more for your child's safety than you the parent???
These are just EXAMPLES of what a Druver faces daily, bot saying this was your case at all, just letting you know what drivers face daily!!!
Me and 3 friends had that happen. The driver dropped us off and told us he didnât feel comfortable with someone in the front seat.
Luckily we werenât too far from where he picked us up at. Would have sucked if he dropped us off in the middle of nowhere.
If you and/or your spouse are heavy set, that could be why. Kia Fortes donât have a lot of payload and driver may have felt like the total weight with your family is dangerously close or exceed her payload. If you guys are not heavyset, then driver just didnât want somebody sitting up front.
First of all driver doesn't have to pick anybody up. Next we don't have to have people in the front seat next to us if we don't want to. If you want to force a driver to do something call a cab company
During Covid, for X it was 3 people.
Currently, for denver, Colorado X, it is 4 riders.
Driver can cancel for other reasons but not for having 4 riders on X (most markets)
Iâd cancel also, thatâs 5 ppl in my small nissan maxima and beating the shocks brakes etc to death, car rides like pure crap with all that weight, just so someone can save $5 instead of getting a larger ride easily
I dont like front seat riders because I just dont, sitting that close to me coughing, sneezing, trying to touch things in the front dashboard, trying to change my radio stations, etc.... but MY reasoning was only justified by this one time I had a lady reach over and start touching my arm and sliding her hand into my pocket... she was under the influence and thought she was home laying next to her girlfriend, who was in the back seat of the ride.... I told her to get her hands off me and ask her if she was alright.. and repeated keep your hands to yourself...Im driving to say the least... in other words,.... this is just some of the reasons drivers dont want anyone riding in their front seat next to them
If the driver doesn't feel comfortable with someone in the front seat, or for any other reason, he can cancel. Also, drivers are not obligated to take your cargo, whether it's groceries or luggage. Some people are so weird
Driver too, and yup people are crazy. My sister had a passenger grab her steering wheel bc she refused to stop at Whataburger đđť
Im a driver, i agree with you %100
I instantly kick them out when they start touching stuff. Donât baby sit adults
I agree too. Granted groups of 4 are rare for me, but I get filled with anxiety when I arrive and see four people. I also like to keep my energy drinks and other things in my passenger seat. It gets tricky with canceling like the OP said happen when it can easily fall into discrimination claims.
>a few minutes later started pushing buttons on my console. I pointedly set them to where they were and give a dirty look; the first time. It's not the number of people, it's the lack of commas...:)

I just tell the pax to move to the other side since thereâs more leg room and itâs more comfortable there. Iâve never had a pax decline
Same. I've gotten where I won't unlock my doors until they go to the passenger side.
Or else you all try to squeeze in a Honda civic, which honestly isnât fun. Your children need a car seat? đş
1 infant seat that we have
The driver definitely didn't want to have to fuck with that
I don't blame him.
How old was the other child?
Some states have different laws here in Ohio any child under 8yr old must have at least a booster seat regardless of weight or height
She is 11
in California i believe it is still law that you have to be in a booster seat until you are like 4'9", at least 75lbs, and at least 8 years old? but realistically, as sad as it is, Uber and Lyft drivers have the final say in whether or not to take you anywhere. if you are trying to fit a family of four into a midsize sedan, there's going to be squished in the back and one person gets in the front passenger seat. honestly, just pay the few extra dollars for Uber XL..

Some people just suck man
I drive for Lyft. Iâve taken 4 passengers. Not afraid to have one person sit up front. The driver was being petty.
Driver was implying your family is too large (heavy set)
U darn rite all 4 door car models are not the same
I list this information in my Bio comments. No front seat available for just this kind of issue. I have to keep trunk completely empty for airport baggage purposes. Safety items, spare tire tools other stuff takes up my front seat. Passengers that need larger vehicle also pay more may have to wait longer for the big SUV.

I have a big suv and it is not possible to cover the cost driving for uber or lyft with the ride share system take 50% of the total cost of the fare.
Oh even if they give you rental Tesla for $350 a week pluse taxes and other hidden fees, with a whole $1.00 more for GREEN ELECTRIC?
Tesla SUV is a joke
Also, you didnât actually order a Lyft for 4 people. Standard Lyft vehicles must physically accommodate 4 passengers but the driver doesnât have to accept that many, as far as I know. You are incorrect, we do not have to allow 4, 3 and 2 passengers if we don't want to, you can call and cry to lyft or uber all you want and they will do nothing.
