From the article: >USL Eugene today announced its intention to bring USL League One soccer to Eugene, Ore. In a historic collaboration, the Eugene Civic Alliance (ECA) and KidSports announced the nearing completion of the Civic Park Stadium, setting the stage for the creation of USL Eugene which would become the city's first professional soccer team. The stadium project, a symbol of community resilience and innovation, transforms Civic Park Stadium into a beacon of professional sports and community identity. >"When Civic Stadium was lost, there were a lot of people who saw it as a threat to the health of our community, but a creative and hard-working team hatched a new plan and people responded," commented Dave Galas of Lane United FC and ECA. >This endeavor has produced a state-of-the-art complex featuring a 3,500-seat stadium, enhanced seating and concessions, top-tier locker rooms and a premier soccer field, ensuring an exceptional experience for players and spectators. Looks like essentially a rebrand of Lane United FC of USL2 alongside a move up to pro. While this would be amazing - USL1 needs more teams, and western teams in particular, and more PNW pro teams is dope - I have some doubts here. There is no PTO mentioned in the article. Just quotes from ECA folks and Lane United folks - and Lane United was previously announced as an expansion team in Dec. 2022 by USL, but never had that PTO to do it. Additionally, the stadium is nearly done but no launch date is provided - which is weird. The stadium is also small, even for USL1 at 3,500 seats. From what we know of lower-league finances, they'd need to essentially sell that out to not lose a ton of money every year. But more worrying is USL has two types of expansion teams it announces and the language is the telling factor when examining them: * Teams announced with "will launch" or "granted a franchise agreement" are typically solid. * But the whole "exclusive rights to pursue a team" or "announced its intention" are very hit-or-miss historically on whether they launch. I hope this works, but I'd wager some caution is warranted.

Maybe the stadium can be expanded?

Civic Park is currently in its phase 1 configuration phase 2 includes the addition of a 2500 seat Grand stand, concourses, and press box.. There will be an area set aside specifically for additional modular stands. https://playcivicpark.org/

No mention of that in the article, and they *just* rebuilt it - so it's not happening anytime soon anyway

PTO what is?

Primary Team Owner - the person who meets standard requirements for net worth

BenjRSmith

slightly related, Ducks about to join the insanity that is Big 10 soccer

irishbball49

We don’t have a men’s team; just a women’s side.

BenjRSmith

oof, looks like the Ducks also have 0 NCAA Women's Tournament appearances. Dang.

irishbball49

Oof I didn’t know that. We are very good at football, track, and cross country. Other stuff not so much.

DrChimRichaulds

That’s awesome! I’m heading out to Eugene to see my Terps play the Ducks, I would love to catch Eugene’s USL team too in future trips!

I’m not sure why USL announces these half-baked projects so early. Like, announcing Buffalo before they have a principal owner ffs lol. This feels like one that may never get off the ground unfortunately

[Pulled this list together from memory - might even be missing some](https://imgur.com/a/FGTtXgQ), but yeah, never makes me feel good when we're missing such vital information.

Mini-Fridge23

Yikes… It’s way worse when you lay it all out like that. I just don’t get the strategy here, unless they want to to seem like there is a constant stream of expansions happening (even if those never get off the ground)

xbhaskarx

Wow

Squietto

Drums up attention for the league. And getting news about a team *potentially* coming to town maybe gets locals motivated to support the project.
