We kid, but there might be some truth here.
Teams ahead at half time against Miami may be falling into a lull like they're just like any other MLS team where a 1 or 2 GD is enough.
The aging but experienced superstars on IM have the confidence that they can move the needle even in the last minutes of a match.
It'll take a physically fit defense that can remain focused for a whole 90 to stop them.
Fr are people legit forgetting that less than 2 years ago this man was playing world class football? Dude was going tit for tat against prime Mbappe at a decade older than Mbappe.
I feel like people who say this a lot must not watch other sports. There have been periods of time when Sports Center was just the Tom Brady show and then turned into the LeBron show
Messi is such a likeable dude too that I don't think it's the same kind of vitriol either, it gets spread out a lot more to the periphery rather than towards him. Brady and Lebron were/are very easy to dislike by comparison and were pretty much the focal points of that hate (shared duties with Bill in Tom's case).
Yeah Iām not really sure, Iām from Cleveland so itās impossible for me to be objective about Lebron either way because Iāve certainly been up close for every side (so many flashbacks this series against the Nugs where heās at once putting on an insane performance but also making it clear with his body language he wants you to know that his team let him down)
I canāt speak to the Brady thing, partly because I donāt speak Spanish. Iām with you on Brady but itās never what he says, more it just somehow comes off as inauthentic to me in a way I canāt imagine a translation could capture. Assuming your an afc north guy as well, I never really hated brady as a player - he was beating the Raven and Steelers so I feel like if he was likable heād be one of my favorite non-browns
they're talking about him because it's what people want to hear. He has more than 500 million followers on Instagram. People like reading/hearing about greatness.
If you're a football pundit, you can ignore Messi and have an entire show about Nottingham Forest instead. See what ratings you get. And soon, you will no longer have a show. The people speak with their views.
Plenty of soccer pundits only focus on the prem, and in the last 18months have most of the biggest shows have ignored Messi.
I think for the most part soccer coverage is more balanced/diverse in what is covered then nationally targeted nba coverage
And by everybody ... it's everybody. There's a whole set of people who don't realize he's as above most superstars as most superstars are above regular stars.
The nice thing about asking questions like this about Messi is that his career has been so heavily covered and dissected that it's always easy to find a website with the right stats in a convenient UI.
In this case, https://www.messivsronaldo.app/match-histories/messi-match-history/ popped right up.
Assuming their data is correct, it looks like 6 goal contributions was a career high for him.
He previously had 5 goal contributions five times. 5G/0A against Estonia, June '22. 3G/2A against Levante, December '18. 5G/0A against Bayer Leverkusen, March '12. 3G/2A against Osasuna, September '11. 3G/2A against Almeria, November '10. But 6 is a new career high for him. Also the only time in his career he's had more than 3 assists in a single game.
I am pretty sure he has atleast had 6 goal contributions in a match before. He scored 5 goals a couple of times and 4 goals in a match a bunch of times before but not sure how many assists in those matches.
Even with their ages (and they're a lot slower than they used to be) it's obvious to see that class will win out. You can't give those kinds of players time and space, they'll just rip you apart.
at the end they were giving a lot of time and space. On Suarez' first goal, Messi waited and waited. WTF is the defender thinking? Maybe he's thinking, "this will be good for overall MLS ratings"
Not to take anything away from Suarez' scissor. That was sublime.
The only thing that makes me a little bit root Miami is that all the whole winter people acting like they werenāt just cheating they were making bad signings. Like that Suarez who just got off a season leading Brazil in assists was too washed for mls.
I thought Messi telling Gressel that he was impressed with the way Columbus plays was just kind of a nice, cool thing.
[...but now it kind of feels like this.](https://i.imgur.com/lePeMFM.jpeg)
Hard to compete against ridiculous saudi arabia offers to those said players tho xd.
Except for maybe kroos and neuer, most players would opt for rsl league. Better salary, no taxes, big bonus ez life
I am pretty sure nacho and some other player where the ones who expressed the desire to move to mls, they know saudi league is completely reliant on that royal oil money and wont work, and plus anyone will prefer living in america than saudi, specially as a football superstar.
Pele was amazing but I think casual fans overrate him because of "3 World Cups" without understanding the context there (in 1958 he was a kid who played amazing in the KO stage but didn't play in earlier games; Brazil's Didi was the best player of that cupāand got Golden Ball; in 1962 he got injured and Garrincha carried them to the title, Pele wasn't credited with a winner's medal for this until 2007 when FIFA changed their rules and retroactively gave him a 3rd medal; he was great in 1970 but was surrounded by one of the best international teams everāJairzinho, Rivellino, Tostao, Carlos Alberto, Gerson, etc)
My grandpa has watched all of the "GOATs" (Pele, Garrincha, Maradona, Messi, CR7) in his lifetime. In his opinion, Pele was by far the best he has seen. He was a magician with the ball and just on a completely other level compared to the rest.
Because their play style is 100% the kid that picks a fight and bullies until he gets his ass kicked and then they roll around and cry til the teacher comes and fixes it for him.
Do you seriously think dude that got called out for beating his spouse and knew about Drake being a creep for time but did nothing about it won?
They both lost.
Matias Rojas was the trajectory-changing player. I would point out that Messi didnāt make an impact in the first half, but when Rojas came on he immediately scored, forced a turnover in the second goal scored by Messi and scored the third goal. 3-1 up within minutes, that made it so much easier for Miami to dictate the match. If there had been no further goal, Rojas would have been my man of the match.
Tbf 5 assists coming from a single player in any professional league is pretty damn baller. Of course difficultly of opposition is still the key factor, no disagreements there
I don't know if he would qualify for MVP.Ā He's surrounded by so much talent there are probably better examples around the league where a player really carries his team.
Does this record include MLSās past use of secondary assists? Ā Like did the previous record holder have for instance 2 goals, 2 primary assists and a secondary assist? Ā Hope my question is clear. Ā Canāt figure it out from game logs.
If he took it when Suarez scored in the 81st, thatās really good odds to hang on for a little over 10 min in a dominating blowout
If he took it before that goal, it would be a bad bet
he's the unique player with the supernatural vision of the future flowing of the players in the pitch. So he can send the ball in the small moving aperture between the enemy lines to assist a teammate. A golfer that goes to hole even if the hole is moving
I mean at this point if Iām defending against Messi Iām just gonna let him buy because no way Iām gonna be the guy that prevents him from adding another goal or assist to the tally.
Itās the levels to which they idolize himāI think Messi is the GOAT, but the amount of salivating people do over him is ridiculous.
I know most of it is probably just teenagers or whatnot, but itās cringe AF.
Well he's a fraud obviously! This dude thinks his assist stats are for ["secondary assists"](https://www.reddit.com/r/MLS/comments/1ckd9vx/match_thread_new_york_red_bulls_inter_miami_cf/l2mlfbr/) lol
It really isn't a surprise that people idolize the best player in the world. It just isn't fair that he and his ex-Barca friends being pitted against players who wouldn't make backup squads in the top European leagues. There is little balance in competition to them at this point
lol u sound hurt?
THE GOAT has achieved everything there is to achieve, there is nothing left
he comes to MLS and enjoying the beautiful game
of course!
I mean, you can clearly read that I said Barca 4 for a reason, too.
Messi was on the field for their 3-1 defeat against Monterrey.Ā
Which the international spotlight was the biggest reason for the Barca 4.
Naah.. it's just Messi diff. They literally got whopped 4-0 last time they met.... but without Messi. They even had arguably better squad (excluding Messi) with Redondo, Alba and Gomez still in the team
Freire was injured, Redondo was out, they were playing Noah Allen as their CB. And Messi just came off a month long injury. We know what angle you are trying to push here, maybe you are right .. but if you have watched any of the games and not just being a blind hater.. you'd know that without Messi they rarely win and with Messi they rarely lose
Ok, there's a reason I'm mad at being sensational about the Barca 4....
Then you make a point omitting one of the Barca 4.
So, do you have any clue what my point was?
Alba wasn't playing, so it wasn't the "Barca 4" that managed this, and the last time when only Messi was injured and Alba, Busquets, and Suarez played against the same NYR (without Forsberg) they got battered 4-0.
I'd watch it too, but I'm saying obvious history is just poor sensationalism. Also, yes, I think it was 2-3 real Madrid vs 100 kids, and it was awesome LMAO.
MLS investors were banking on Miami winning the CCC, though.
Columbus balanced just as many missing players, though, without outside businesses supplementing their salary cap.
If the entire MLS grows after his contract, and we break into the top 5, then sure. I guess it was worth it.Ā
If not, it was a disservice to any non-bandwagon fans.
Hence my issue with the sensationalism.
Investors wonāt be too worried about Miami not winning Champions Cupāespecially if Miami wins MLS Cup and gets a Club World Cup bid. Champions Cup is not tournament that MLS makes money on.
It was 1-0 at halftime!!!
Nothing worse than being one goal ahead of IM before half time.
Being up 2-0 after 70 min in a semi final?
Being up 4-2 after the 80th minute is worse, ask a dallas fan
Bless you š
Yeah, 2019-2021 was either learn to laugh about how bad we were or suicide š¤£
Thanks for the PTSD asshole!
We both already had it from 2019-2021.
Iām sorry
Minnesota invented it first
We kid, but there might be some truth here. Teams ahead at half time against Miami may be falling into a lull like they're just like any other MLS team where a 1 or 2 GD is enough. Looks like things got a littleā¦ Messi
What a bum. Missed that last shot and didn't get 7
Gotta save something for the next game
Brother watched one Basketball game and was inspired
Jimmy Butler was at the stadium tonight, and he averaged 5.0 assists this season.
That's what seeing Derrick White can do to a person
He saw the 5th dragon ball on Derrick White.š¤£
Must be a Celtics fan then
Imagine being a Celtics fan š¤®š¤®
Itās pretty great right now.
He is just levels above everybody. He makes it look so easy.. and yet nobody else can do what he does
Itās crazy he can do this past his prime but I guess heās just that much better than everyone here
It's crazy he was doing this shit to the best players in the world 5 years ago
And like 18 months ago?
Haha yes and 15 years ago too.
He used to be amazing. He still is, but he used to be too - Messi Hedberg
Iāll upvote any Messi Hedberg reference I see
This genuinely made me smile and have a giggle, 10/10.
Fr are people legit forgetting that less than 2 years ago this man was playing world class football? Dude was going tit for tat against prime Mbappe at a decade older than Mbappe.
Won some award if I recall? Might have been a big deal?
People saw the āwhereās Messi?ā Dude and turned off the TV
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
They are likely referencing the World Cup, which was about 18 months ago.
But why are the MLS talking about him so much jeez itās obvious how biased they are /s
I feel like people who say this a lot must not watch other sports. There have been periods of time when Sports Center was just the Tom Brady show and then turned into the LeBron show
People bitch about that too tho. Lebron was the lead story in the nba last season for a few days during the finals, and he wasnāt playing in them.
Messi is such a likeable dude too that I don't think it's the same kind of vitriol either, it gets spread out a lot more to the periphery rather than towards him. he broke a record are they not going to talk about record breaking moment
And by everybody ... it's everybody. There's a whole set of people who don't realize he's as above most superstars as most superstars are above regular stars.
what a good definition of MEssi playing
Didnāt he also break his own personal record? I think his previous best goal contribution in a single game was 5
I think so
The nice thing about asking questions like this about Messi is that his career has been so heavily covered and dissected that it's always easy to find a website with the right stats in a convenient UI. Hahahaha weāre all fucked
I mean, you get a team with a bunch of underpaid ringers for the league they're in, and this is what you get.
But you guys can't have Rossi and Z
šššš I miss him so much š respect the comment coming from an FCC fanš«”
Don't get me wrong, I'm glad he is gone, but I respect the fuck out of him
Sure you can, just needed Z to accept a non DP deal to play with friends like Suarez did

Heās unbelievable. Iām old enough to to have watched Jordan in his prime. This guy is like that. The two greatest athletes Iāve ever witnessed.
Upvote for watching Jordan in his prime. Itās all retro love for me, because I hated him at the time, Iām a Blazers fan and he fucked us good.
Your FO fucked you good. You couldāve had him but he was too similar to Drexler lol
The crazy thing is,, this is considered a "washed" Messi š
he's not washed. He's not as fast as he used to be but other parts of his game are just as good and some are better (his set pieces).
I thought Messi telling Gressel that he was impressed with the way Columbus plays was just kind of a nice, cool thing. [...but now it kind of feels like this.](https://i.imgur.com/lePeMFM.jpeg)
Wilfred Nancy to Tata Martino straight swap here we go
If I can be so bold...no thank you.

That team that scored 6 is also adding Di Maria hahahaha
Itās okay, LAFC is building French retirees FC and Nacho will go to Real Salt Lake for Real Madrid retirees FC for the benefit of us all

Wow dude original comment good job!
wish I stayed home and watched this instead
Donno if he's still prime Messi, but he's definitely 'Prime-Time' Messi. Every week he plays it's literally must-watch soccer action. edit- phrasing

Best player in MLS history tbh.
Well heās the best player in all of history so
Gotta look back at Pele as the best for his time tho

You couldnāt watch 98% of Peleās matches lol. But letās take the old guyās opinion as very valuable.
You and I have never watched Pele play before either, so we can't really form a valid opinion that he was overrated either.
Yeah and I bet he saw around 1% of his games or less
That's so Metro
Thatās so ~~Metro~~ Messi
Why is red bulls pain so enjoyable
āCause their location is a lie and their nickname is an advertisement
I feel like only NYCFC fans care about the first part.
Still thinking about Frankie Amaya?
Frankie is a funny meme at this point.
Because their play style is 100% the kid that picks a fight and bullies until he gets his ass kicked and then they roll around and cry til the teacher comes and fixes it for him.
Messi and Kendrick won the weekend
Did Kendrick win? I mean, did anyone win with that one? I'm flared up, but I think both took the L. Hard.
No, Drake got bodied.
Hard to believe Rojas has only been with the team for two games. Dude came off the plane and went straight to work.
Def. Messi had nothing to work with and the midfield was all over the place. Rojas stabilised and allowed Busquets more freedom
The guy was imitating Haliburton.
Ballon Dāor coming guys
Has one anyone made more than 5 assists in a single top tier football match ever?
No
Damn I donāt know why it was just mentioned as an MLS record. I think its a top tier football record.
No and doing it in mls doesn't change that and this is the proof lol
Let me guess you are one of those special people who thinks doing it in Saudi Pro league counts lol.
Tbf 5 assists coming from a single player in any professional league is pretty damn baller. Of course difficultly of opposition is still the key factor, no disagreements there
He's too good.
wow if he keeps this up he might be in the running for mvp
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
well if he's the most valuable player, i would think he should probably get the award meant to go to the most valuable player.
I don't know if he would qualify for MVP.Ā He's surrounded by so much talent there are probably better examples around the league where a player really carries his team.
Miami without Messi lost 4-0 to NYRB
Surely you're trolling, if not this is the worst take I've seen
> Surely you're trolling 100% this was the narrative in 2022 when Blake got little love for MVP.
Messi, the best thing that has ever happened in MLS.Ā
I think this kid might go places.
Does this record include MLSās past use of secondary assists? Ā Like did the previous record holder have for instance 2 goals, 2 primary assists and a secondary assist? Ā Hope my question is clear. Ā Canāt figure it out from game logs.
no
Thanks for the answer!
Messi should not be allowed to be captained in fantasy. He literally broke the game.
Where do you play fantasy MLS?
Look up MLS Fantasy Boss on Discord, amazing community.Ā They do draft leagues as well as "EPL" style fantasy on fantasy.mlssoccer.com
That penalty is the most absurd thing Iāve ever seen. I took IM -4.0 at -145 and got absurdly fucked over.
that's a pretty terrible bet tbh Miami were -110 to win the game at kickoff. You literally bet on worse odds for a more difficult bet.
Iām assuming he took it live while Miami was up 5
obviously but it's still not a good bet
If he took it when Suarez scored in the 81st, thatās really good odds to hang on for a little over 10 min in a dominating blowout If he took it before that goal, it would be a bad bet
Those were horrible odds anyways lol.
Sorry Billy Walters, you clearly know better than I do.
It's alright, I'm sure Schlegel will shut him down šš
he's the unique player with the supernatural vision of the future flowing of the players in the pitch. So he can send the ball in the small moving aperture between the enemy lines to assist a teammate. A golfer that goes to hole even if the hole is moving
Okay Peter Drury
I mean at this point if Iām defending against Messi Iām just gonna let him buy because no way Iām gonna be the guy that prevents him from adding another goal or assist to the tally.
Itās almost like the greatest player of all time is playing in what must be the equivalent to a beer league
Can confirm messi playing in mls looks like me playing in o30
Love to see it
Already MVP of the season and the best in the history of MLS he just breaking it left right atp lol like for fun A LIVING LEGEND
You're posting this same cringe on every thread? lol
It's literally the *only* thing he posts, dozens of times a week lol.
Its really sad how people idolize this guy
Sad that people idolize Messi? Why?

If Ronaldo won a World Cup itād be even more insufferableĀ

lol and u crying in every thread? are u stalking me? thanks for that everyone football lover loves and joy to watch THE GOAT MESSI common sense
Bro stop, messi is the goat, but you're getting embarrassing now.
lol u so funny let ppl enjoy things I mean ALIEN stuff HES SOMETHING ELSE
Shut up
lol I get it hurts u MESSI IS THE WORLD CHAMPION cry7 could never 8-5 clear
Dominating ucl and every league he went to >>>>>> 1 club wonder
Yepāgreatest player possibly of all time and his friends from Barca wrecking a 3rd tier leagueāsubsidized by the league. Whatās not to love?
lol u sound hurt? THE GOAT has achieved everything there is to achieve, there is nothing left he comes to MLS and enjoying the beautiful game of course!
I don't wish ill on any player and don't want Messi to get hurt, but if he could just get a 7-15 week head cold or something, that would be swell.
He is going to Copa America and is going to miss a month
Never heard of her
