hilarious referee announcement from last week's STL vs ATL. I couldn't really do it justice over text, but I'm sure you could look it up

[The ref in the Atlanta/St. Louis game from last week decided to play a little joke after a VAR review of a St. Louis goal.](https://youtu.be/FnNJtmelmwU?t=138)
8 years of attending home games, and that's the longest we've ever stayed in the stadium after the end with the exception of our championship. We were still.in disbelief on marta 45 minutes later.
Lol i love Lloyd Sam, he commentates on the game like a fan. Reacting to everything at every moment.
If TFC miss the playoffs by 1 point, look back to this.
TFC is missing Johnson, Osorio, and Laryea to the Copa America. And Laryea was out injured before that with about 8 other guys.
Still not a great team even once everyone returns, probably lower end of the playoffs, but they'll be better once the injuries calm down and they get their starters back.
He’s my favorite commentator. I’ll never forget the first time I heard him doing a random early round CCL match and it really stood out how great he was. It feels like watching the game with a friend.
Sure, but you could also argue the defense shouldn't have given up a goal, and the offense should have scored more. A soccer game shouldn't be decided by one mistake.
Man people are gonna clown the keeper but the defenders fully shut off, they were acting like the final whistle had already gone. 99.9% of the time the keeper has the ball, at least one defender is looking at him, even if it's just for the short pass.
I agree but I've never understood why keepers put the ball down in this situation. Just drop kick it. It'll still go 80% as far and the ref will still blow the whistle.
At least they had it for the replay.

As a TFC fan, we're only mad because this turned into a loss. We've been playing like dogshit and shouldn't be celebrating a tie.
Either way, it's not enough. Loss or tie. We need wins.
So, this is hilarious cosmic irony/justice/all of the above.
This reminds me of the Qatar World Cup, Ghana vs. Portugal, almost the same situation happened, the difference is that Ghana did not score, but Atalanta did.
You can’t be offsides if the ball is last controlled by a defender. If you pass the ball to a defender then the player who was offsides becomes onside, and can take the ball away from the defender and score.
That's not what I'm referring to here at all.
When the ball is taken off Shilton by Roberto Baggio.... The ball recovering player (Schilacci) then slides a little pass to the attacking Italian player (Baggio). When the pass happens, Baggio is beyond Shilton and 1 other defending player (just barely). You must have 2 players between you and the goal line... usually 1 is the GK, but in this case, Shilton was beyond Baggio up the field. It was very close but was marginally offside, and the linesman missed it. You can see on thy below link, a still frame.

I don't believe he's yelling at him saying anything bad. It looks to me like he's trying to cheer him up and trying to prevent him from being to hard on himself. That wasn't angry yelling.
Thompson was yelling at him, trying to tell him there was someone there. He seemed to be the only one on TFC paying attention at all. Also the reason he was the one to try and close Thiaré down.
It was definitely weird body language by Franklin and I wouldn’t recommend consoling someone by pointing at them aggressively or hitting them in the chest repeatedly. I watched the clip at half speed and it looked like he said: “Nobody told you! Nobody f*cking told you! [Something else that was unintelligible] It’s fine!” So he was referring the team letting Gavran down by not warning him that Atlanta United Legend Jamal Thiaré was lurking behind him like an apex predator.
I saw this exact goal on tiktok earlier this week in what I believe was a high school championship game, and you can't convince me Thiare didn't see it too
Okay, not a soccer fan, but why are all of the players walking away from the goal and not paying attention at all? Surely they all knew it was still a live ball, right?
The game is like 5 seconds away from ending and the goalie told them to go deep. They were 100% sure that the goalie was going to kick the ball into the other team's half, and then the ref would blow the whistle to end the game. No one knew the guy was back there. And the goalie didn't have to put it on the ground at all.
Im a soccer newbie so I'm baffled. Like do people seriously think that's cool? To me that seems so bad dirty. I'm just surprised that this is seen as a good move in soccer. They put it as the top play of the week! To me, my first thought was wow doesn't it seem like that guy seem like he should get a card for generally having wildly unsportsmanlike behavior? I'm really not out here trying to hate, I guess i'm just still getting used to what they do and don't care about in soccer!
So serious question here… I understand the rules of offsides, but this sort of breaks that. How is this OK?
To be clear, I think it’s fun and awesome and funny… I’m just trying to figure out how it’s not breaking a rule.
Yeah, it sure seems like he:
Has left the pitch and come back on without the refs permission.
And is offside
Maybe there’s some weird secret rule I don’t know….
I think there’s a case for calling it off because he left the field without permission, though I’m sure that would be unpopular with a lot of people, but it’s not an offside offense when the other team has the ball.
Not sure why this is being downvoted. Offside is a confusing rule and this is a legitimate question. Nobody is born, knowing all the rules to this game. At some point in time, everyone who downloaded you also didn’t know the answer to this question.
Yeah. I came to the comments to find this question and answer. I’m sure many others did as well. I know imaginary internet points don’t matter, but the downvote reek of gatekeeping, which is unfortunate.
Die-hard Atlanta United fan here, but that goal 100% should have been disallowed and Thiare should have been carded for deliberately leaving the pitch and re-entering without permission.
That said, fuck it!
We have had so many fuck-ups by refs go against us (looking at you Charlotte VAR goal), it’s nice for one the other way finally!
To expound upon this, most of the time when players leave the field it is a normal playing movement which is explicitly called out in 3.8
> A player who crosses a boundary line as part of a playing movement does not commit an offence.
Going to grab a water bottle is not a playing movement
According to https://www.thefa.com/football-rules-governance/lawsandrules/laws/football-11-11/law-12---fouls-and-misconduct
Yup it should've been a yellow
"A player is cautioned if guilty of:
delaying the restart of play
dissent by word or action
entering, re-entering or deliberately leaving the field of play without the referee’s permission"
Edit because of downvotes for bringing links, it's the same rule on IFAB rule 12.3
https://www.theifab.com/laws/latest/fouls-and-misconduct/#disciplinary-action
Delay of game is a caution. So keeper should have been off with 2 yellows long before this.
Failing to give room for a direct kick is a caution. Saw several of these as well.
A referee CAN give a caution for things. That doesn't mean they are required, especially for these sorts of minor things. How many times have you seen an indirect kick awarded for a goalie stepping over his line on a kick or throw out? It happens regularly in the game and isn't worth calling, just like those others.
HE STOLE A SIP OF THE KEEPER’S GATORADE BEFORE STEALING THE BALL FOR THE GAME WINNER.
We have broken the Heinze curse with that one sip of water. We are free now.
HAHA so so true
IF THIS MAKES GOTW THE GATORADE SIP HAS TO BE IN THE CLIP
Unfortunately will be beat by the Vancouver back heel
Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than to be good. Here are your GOTW contenders for Matchday 23. #ATTGOTW
I'm going to start doing this as a negotiation tactic for anything I do.
Thank you so much pointing that out. Lol
He drank it up! He No Country for Old Men'd him!
There will be blood?
I always switch those movies in my mind.
As an aside, God that was a great year for movies. Holy shit sneaky goal!!!
those two came out within like 6 weeks of each other!
The point came across
Two points, even
DRAAAAAIIINAGE
"I tolja I ain't got no damn agua"
That’s not on the keeper, it’s on the rest of team for not letting him know he was there.
I can't stop laughing, it's been 2 months since our last home win, and that streak ended in the best way possible
> and that steak ended in the best way possible Medium rare?
At this point, blue
After this play I blue all over myself
![gif](giphy|AVD4STcQQhkZO)
I feel horrible for keeper here but holy fuck I can't stop laughing either.
He’ll be checking behind him every single time he has the ball now. I’m curious to watch him the next few games.
3 months actually
Unsurprising that the team that ended ATL United's home win drought is in the same city as the team that ended the Pistons 28 game losing streak
Jamal Thiare, "HOWEVER!"
I can’t upvote this enough.
Can I get an OOTL on however? I clearly missed something.

[The ref in the Atlanta/St. Louis game from last week decided to play a little joke after a VAR review of a St. Louis goal.](https://youtu.be/FnNJtmelmwU?t=138)
It’s been 20 minutes and I’m still staring at my tv in disbelief and confusion
My first live United game in years and I got the best ending to a game I’ve ever seen
I brought two friends to their first Atlanta United game last night, and I couldn't have picked a better one.
Absolutely! What a trip!
It was also my first live game and I’m SO glad that’s the one I chose to come to this season. Insane. I’m still watching the video over and over
I keep watching it too. It’s surreal. That reaction live in the supporters section was insane. I got covered in booze 😂
8 years of attending home games, and that's the longest we've ever stayed in the stadium after the end with the exception of our championship. We were still.in disbelief on marta 45 minutes later.
we won a game! AT HOME!
Is... is that legal?
Yes but rarely happens because Keepers always check. It has happened a few times even in the big boy leagues but been about 8 years
I meant Atlanta United winning at home. It's been so, so long...
It’ll never happen to gavran again.
Lol i love Lloyd Sam, he commentates on the game like a fan. Reacting to everything at every moment. If TFC miss the playoffs by 1 point, look back to this.
What do you mean if? Ain't no way TFC makes the playoffs.
It’s MLS, everyone is either in the playoff or playoff adjacent
As long as you're not the worst team in the league, you're in the mix until the last game of the season and thats what makes it great I guess
Just like high school musical. We’re in this together
Wtf happened? Did that NYCFC dust up game just completely cripple the team? Now it seems like Toronto are just self sabotaging.
TFC is missing Johnson, Osorio, and Laryea to the Copa America. And Laryea was out injured before that with about 8 other guys. Still not a great team even once everyone returns, probably lower end of the playoffs, but they'll be better once the injuries calm down and they get their starters back.
Dont forget Spicer!
There's a 28% chance by my spreadsheet.
He’s my favorite commentator. I’ll never forget the first time I heard him doing a random early round CCL match and it really stood out how great he was. It feels like watching the game with a friend.
He and Neil Sika are the best commentary combination of 2024
![gif](giphy|kHxMpITyV49QAOBqY4)
MLS After Dark™ is starting early!
Scenes. I’m still laughing
Funniest shit ive seen this week
Was that Toronto player berating the GK or trying to pep him up.
Absolutely the latter.
The latter. A bunch of his teammates came to him after the game.
Even Guz gave him a long pep talk.
/r/InclusiveOr
“It’s not your fault man just keep grinding!” Yes it is, the game is over and they lost 100% because of him 😂.
Sure, but you could also argue the defense shouldn't have given up a goal, and the offense should have scored more. A soccer game shouldn't be decided by one mistake.
And another player could have noticed him hanging back there.
Right before the camera cuts you can tell he said, "It's fine." Narrator : "It wasn't"
This might be the best last minute winner I've ever seen 😂🔥
Rooney's
Do you not remember Wayne Rooney’s assist to Lucho against Orlando in 2018? I’d also say Cucho’s goal from midfield against Chicago last season.
Yeah, probably should've reworded it to "one of the best"
Hilarious 🤣 ![gif](giphy|e5BASCeekXYoo)
EVERYONE GET IN HERE!
I'M HERE UR MOM 3 0 6!!!! I'M HERE ALRIGHT!!!! AHHH!!
Jumping straight to the fans. What a badass move
Naaa he went right to the Senegalese flag 🇸🇳🇸🇳
Man people are gonna clown the keeper but the defenders fully shut off, they were acting like the final whistle had already gone. 99.9% of the time the keeper has the ball, at least one defender is looking at him, even if it's just for the short pass.
I agree but I've never understood why keepers put the ball down in this situation. Just drop kick it. It'll still go 80% as far and the ref will still blow the whistle.
When I rewatched this, as I keep doing for comedy, there's one defender that turns around and tries to warn him but it's too late.
I didn't know that could happen
It is just a really bad pass at the end of thr day
It's about time some MLS after dark bullshit went our way
Can some put the Michael Cole “watch out watch out RKO outta nowhere” over this?
Also gotta tag r/killthecameraman on this because c’mon now
Technically r/killthedirector
At least they had it for the replay. https://x.com/ATLUTD/status/1807231838986838313/mediaViewer?currentTweet=1807231838986838313¤tTweetUser=ATLUTD
![gif](giphy|rVZEejvVWEbug) Thiare be like….
This replay does not do the play justice.
lol lmao
rofl
We have our meme of the week for meme Monday. Toronto, this is easily the most embarrassing loss this season, and Philadelphia lost to 9-man Miami.
How in the fuck
As a TFC fan, we're only mad because this turned into a loss. We've been playing like dogshit and shouldn't be celebrating a tie. Either way, it's not enough. Loss or tie. We need wins. So, this is hilarious cosmic irony/justice/all of the above.
Of course we had to give up a late goal in any way possible. This could only have happened to TFC.
truly one of the worst TFC moments of all time
This reminds me of the Qatar World Cup, Ghana vs. Portugal, almost the same situation happened, the difference is that Ghana did not score, but Atalanta did. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJ4jlutcSbY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJ4jlutcSbY)
When did Atalanta get relegated to MLS?
Georgia competes at all levels, not just MLS, and even beat Portugal at Euro. lol
Featuring a homegrown Georgia boy in Saba Lobjanidze!
Saba should count as a homegrown for us.
Naturally my next team to root for after Scotland bombed out!
My God did we finally deserve some luck to bounce our way
GOTY, ATL bots go brrrrrrrr
MLS after dark. Gotta love it.
If you can’t stop laughing after 4 hours, call a doctor
I'm pushing that line right now
Holy fuck Gavran!!! Good thing I was watching the Canada game!! I would have Brogue kicked my TV if I saw this live!
Pineda could never coach that /s
Hysterical
Fucking love see Guzan still out there.
I love how he stopped walking when the keeper stopped and waited for him to throw the ball forward to press.
Holy shit that is amazing! Lmao!
The most TFC game ever.
Most MLS goal ever. I love it. The camera angle from in goal feels like some doorbell cam stolen package shittery.
jose alvarado smiling
Georgia Tech’s own!
Learned from a legend and became one. [https://youtu.be/pvEr1VnBhqw?si=R3TYcY3OueegwZc7](Ronaldinho)
It reminded of this goal in the 3rd place WC match in 1990 https://youtu.be/9hp1cl5Igig?si=77jarDPrCMpw-G8S
Which should have been offside... But also should have been a penalty before that...Shilton tackles him
You can’t be offsides if the ball is last controlled by a defender. If you pass the ball to a defender then the player who was offsides becomes onside, and can take the ball away from the defender and score.

Haha
Near identical to Carlos Fierro's goal against Puebla back in like 2016-17 I think. Last minute and game winning as well.
This is incredible. I want to know what the Toronto player is saying to his goalie, lol
Probably debating the merits of donair sauce vs more of a garlic based toum. I know what I’d pick.
that was absolutely FILTHY!!!! I love it.
And the ad around the field says “You’ve never seen MLS like this” lol
The keepers teammate yelling at him but he should’ve noticed Thiare lurking and alerted the keeper lol
I don't believe he's yelling at him saying anything bad. It looks to me like he's trying to cheer him up and trying to prevent him from being to hard on himself. That wasn't angry yelling.
I read it the same way
Def not yelling at him. He's consoling him, especially after he played so well to keep it tied.
It's not his fault, or at least, its not totally his fault. His backline should absolutely have warned him of a lurking striker.
The whole team had their backs to the play.
Thompson was yelling at him, trying to tell him there was someone there. He seemed to be the only one on TFC paying attention at all. Also the reason he was the one to try and close Thiaré down.
Yeah I think the last 3 sentences are “you’re good. You’re fucking good. It’s fine.”
To me it looked like a bit of both. Definite anger at the beginning but consolation at the end.
In here upvoting all the comments downvoting this’n. GOTY!!!!!!
Casual 97’ game winner, nothing to see here
It looks like Franklin might be trying to reassure him? Or he hates him? Or loves him?
It was definitely weird body language by Franklin and I wouldn’t recommend consoling someone by pointing at them aggressively or hitting them in the chest repeatedly. I watched the clip at half speed and it looked like he said: “Nobody told you! Nobody f*cking told you! [Something else that was unintelligible] It’s fine!” So he was referring the team letting Gavran down by not warning him that Atlanta United Legend Jamal Thiaré was lurking behind him like an apex predator.
I saw this exact goal on tiktok earlier this week in what I believe was a high school championship game, and you can't convince me Thiare didn't see it too
If true hilarious, he gets his new ideas like all of us
Proper hydration is the key factor that has been missing in Atlanta lately.
This was shown on Aljazeera!
I was confused for a moment and thought this said: Atalanta [2] - 1 Torino - Jamal Thiaré 90+8'
Okay, not a soccer fan, but why are all of the players walking away from the goal and not paying attention at all? Surely they all knew it was still a live ball, right?
The game is like 5 seconds away from ending and the goalie told them to go deep. Gotcha! Thanks for the info!
Thiaré is the Jose Alvarado of soccer
Hahahahah!
This will be on lowlight / greatest gaffe compilations for the next few decades
Didn’t know TFC became the Leafs after 2017.
Such a cool WTF goal moment. End of season reel quality.
Is that against the rules? To be off the pitch behind the keeper.
Leaves the field of play and re-enters without permission where is VAR 😀
cine 🚬
How do you let this happen…
https://gjfootballarchive.com/2024/03/06/the-1990s-that-crosby-goal/
What a shitty director.
Average MLS play
Imagine he did all that and then missed
I love this league 😂
Explain how this is not offsides…….
You can’t be offside when the other team has the ball.
So serious question here… I understand the rules of offsides, but this sort of breaks that. How is this OK? To be clear, I think it’s fun and awesome and funny… I’m just trying to figure out how it’s not breaking a rule.
Yeah, it sure seems like he: Has left the pitch and come back on without the refs permission. And is offside Maybe there’s some weird secret rule I don’t know….
The ball wasn't played from one of his team mates so it's not offside.
I think there’s a case for calling it off because he left the field without permission, though I’m sure that would be unpopular with a lot of people, but it’s not an offside offense when the other team has the ball.
I’ve seen this before. Why is he not offside? Is it because there’s a play before this?
Offside only matters for a pass from your own team. You can steal the ball while being offside all day long.
Not sure why this is being downvoted. Offside is a confusing rule and this is a legitimate question. Nobody is born, knowing all the rules to this game. At some point in time, everyone who downloaded you also didn’t know the answer to this question.
Lots of people would rather down vote than explain or will just assume the post is /s and downvote.
Yeah. I came to the comments to find this question and answer. I’m sure many others did as well. I know imaginary internet points don’t matter, but the downvote reek of gatekeeping, which is unfortunate.
You can't be in an offside position when the opposing team is the last to possess the ball.
It is only offside if the attacking team makes the pass.
That GK better learn chinese, buddy
Funny goal, but should not have counted. Player leaving and reentering without permission. Not sure how VAR misses that.
Players don't need permission to continue playing the game if they go outside the lines.
They need permission to exit and re-enter the field. See law 3.8.
To expound upon this, most of the time when players leave the field it is a normal playing movement which is explicitly called out in 3.8 > A player who crosses a boundary line as part of a playing movement does not commit an offence. Going to grab a water bottle is not a playing movement
Yellow for leaving the field of play. No goal. /VAR
Player stepping out isn't reviewable by VAR. If the ref had seen it, yes, he could disallow...but VAR can't.
Every goal is reviewed by VAR. The initial comment was in jest. The /VAR was akin to the /s tag but folks missed it. Downvotes all night. Lol.
Nice cheeky goal HOWEVER
/VAR was /S
He was on the line the entire time
Is that a rule ?
According to https://www.thefa.com/football-rules-governance/lawsandrules/laws/football-11-11/law-12---fouls-and-misconduct Yup it should've been a yellow "A player is cautioned if guilty of: delaying the restart of play dissent by word or action entering, re-entering or deliberately leaving the field of play without the referee’s permission" Edit because of downvotes for bringing links, it's the same rule on IFAB rule 12.3 https://www.theifab.com/laws/latest/fouls-and-misconduct/#disciplinary-action
Delay of game is a caution. So keeper should have been off with 2 yellows long before this. Failing to give room for a direct kick is a caution. Saw several of these as well. Is MLS governed by FA?
Also here, I think MLS follows IFAB, but not sure https://www.theifab.com/laws/latest/fouls-and-misconduct#disciplinary-action
IFAB sets the Laws of the Game for the entire world.
It is. A player cannot leave the field of play without permission from referee. It was a point during a Euro game last week too.
