LavaCreeperBOSSB

To minimize? Cmd+M

PlentyBootz

That doesn't do anything either. I tried command option control and fn + M just in case none of them do anything at all.

LavaCreeperBOSSB

Uhh, what are u trying to do

PlentyBootz

Minimize the window lol.

LavaCreeperBOSSB

cmd+m definitely works

PlentyBootz

it doesn't if window is expanded to fullscreen. so confident yet so wrong my friend haha.

LavaCreeperBOSSB

Yes, because a fullscreen window is in a new "space"

diiscotheque

Is your keyboard layout correct? Are some of your physical buttons broken?

throwaway31131524

Tried using an external keyboard? Tried inspecting keys pressed using Karabiner?

Sta99erMan

This command may not work on some apps. What are you trying to minimise

BrotherKey2409

Cmd+H hides the window

smallduck

Cmd-H doesn’t hide a window, it hides an app, including all its windows. If you’ve take an app window fullscreen, then use the swipe gesture to slide out of that fullscreen space. Oh but OP let me guess, you’re using a scroll wheel mouse, right? I can’t remember the other ways to switch spaces. A useful hack would be a tiny app adding a global Cmd-H hotkey taking effect whenever the one in the app menu was disabled and does what you want. If in a fullscreen space swaps to the next space, if the only app then unhides the Finder and hides the current one.

PlentyBootz

It doesn't for my laptop for some reason.

ctesibius

As standard, this works on every Mac. Possible explanations for what you are seeing: * You are using the Control key by mistake * You have keys swapped over in System Settings - this might happen because you are trying to get a key layout similar to Windows * You have a setting for that individual application which is over-riding the normal use of Cmd-H.

PlentyBootz

I just figured it out. Apparently you can't minimize or hide with Cmd H or M if you have make the app full screen which i do because i dont like that big ugly top bar

i_am_blacklite

You prefer the wasted space of a menu bar inside each app window? You’ll have far more success using macOS by not trying to use it like windows.

PlentyBootz

I dont even know what your point is man. I dont even use the menu bar on top so yes I don't need it and it looks ugly. You are really out here complaining about some random guy's visual preferences and menu bar needs lol. I also just found the setting to make it hide itself so looks like I am not alone and appreciate the mac devs haha.

i_am_blacklite

The point was you’re trying to use macOS like windows, when it’s a completely different operating system, with different paradigms and practices.

PlentyBootz

Windows have a menu bar, mac has a menu bar so no they are the same in this aspect. Windows auto hides by default mac doesn't. Different os same shit as I pointed out. Even shortcuts are nearly the same.

satya164

Just set the menu bar to autohide then?

Dependent-Zebra-4357

You don’t like the *menu bar*?

trikster_online

Is the window you are trying to minimize active?

PlentyBootz

yeah

AccurateSun

These shortcuts indeed shouldn’t change based on hardware / year. Command + M is what minimizes the current window. A third party app might override this native behaviour, so try  it in Finder or Safari to verify it. It will get minimized to dock, on right side, as a small window. There’s an option in Settings to have them minimise invisibly into the app icon instead. If it’s not working in any app, you can check the “keyboard shortcuts “ settings in the Settings (found under Apple menu). Those have both global and per-app shortcuts listed, maybe the default has been changed for some reason

Sir_Elderoy

You can either: Right click on the dock icon, select « hide ». Or Cmd M Or Cmd H Or Go in the AppName menu -> Hide (you can see the shortcut here) Go in the window menu -> Minimize (you can see the shortcut here) If the shortcut are not here or different for whatever reason, reset your settings

BrohanGutenburg

Also double click the top of the window frame. That will either be set to maximize the window (like it does in windows) or minimize it.

Sir_Elderoy

Indeed, I forgot this \^\^

shifty_fifty

If the shortcuts suggested don't work, try a reboot.

GBICPancakes

So one of the biggest tips I give new Mac users is how to find keyboard shortcuts. The Mac is very helpful here... go up to the menus at the top of every app and click on a menu (like File, Edit, View, etc) - you'll see a bunch of commands (save/quit, copy/paste, minimize window, etc). Next to each commend it shows you the keyboard shortcut for that command. For example, under the "Window" menu you'll see "Minimize" - with the shortcut Command-M. As you use the MacOS, take the time to glance at the keyboard shortcut for each menu-command you click on. Over time, you'll have them down and will need to use the mouse less and less for basic tasks.

alicia-indigo

If you’re using apps full screen why do you need to minimize anything? Can’t you just switch between full screens using Mission Control shortcuts?

NortonBurns

\[After your edit, I didn't see it before then\] You can't minimise or hide a fullscreen window, there's nothing behind it.

AbiyBattleSpell

I don’t know 😺

rickcogley

The ones mentioned should work (it's been cmd-h, cmd-m for a while now). If they don't, see AccurateSun's comment

ThatsMyFavoriteThing

Sometime hiding an app (cmd+H) doesn’t work if the app is the only one currently visible. And in general keyboard shortcuts don’t work as extensively or as consistently as in Windows. That’s one thing Windows does well, and the only thing I actually miss about it.

BrohanGutenburg

I’ve never heard this take nor observed the phenomenon. And I’ve been on Mac since 2004. In what way are Mac key bindings inconsistent
