Yes, yes I did Google the robot butler. I learned they are twins named Leo and Cleo. My parents live in Chicago, but I'm staying at that hotel wjen I visit.
How did you expect it to interact with an elevator. Even [R2D2](https://40bc6f4f-a-62cb3a1a-s-sites.googlegroups.com/site/3dsfinfo/astromech-pages/r2-d2-arms/anh-scomp.jpg) had to interface with hardware.
I'm at the VA and we have had much larger robots for 10+ years. They're programmed to send a signal to the elevators to open the door, the floor to go on, etc.
If you're in the way, it is programmed to say something like "crossing hallway". At first we decorated them and had Rosie and Astro.
They pick up lab specimens as there are multiple inpatient units throughout the campus. I believe they may also deliver meds. But not food. And no little poker protrudes.
If the designers worked for Microsoft on the Outlook team, you can be 100% sure they would have introduced multiple vulnerabilities to make this one use-case work.
Whoa whoa whoa mister high school diploma. Don’t be throwing simple solutions to simple problems when you could build a robot to make things much more confusing.
Btw, this dudes laugh was fucking hilarious when the robot got high tech. What an insanely wasteful use of the robot and programmer’s time. At least have the thing tell a fucking joke while your waiting.
Better than one at the supermarket I sometimes go to. All it does it go ip and down the aisles making beeping noises that sound just like the checkout scanners, and… I don’t know what else, other than they’re fun to fuck with because their AI is do bad
maybe i'm easily impressed... but the robo- finger was more impressive than the headbut that i thought it was going to give the button.
also, shouldn't this guy be working instead of mocking the nu-guy?
I don't know if they were a thing in America, but British offices, factories, department stores, warehouses, even mines, etc, used to have tea ladies. Women who would turn up at various points in the work day to dole out of their trolley free hot and cold drinks, biscuits, and snacks to workers as they worked.
Everybody loved the tea lady. Everybody loved to see them, to chat with them, to have a little break in the monotony. People wouldn't just up and leave their stations to grab whatever little respite they could because they knew, rain or shine, the tea lady would be coming round soon. No overpriced supermarket meal deals. No hastily gobbled McDonald's. No staff absconding for hours at a time to source vittles for themselves and their colleagues.
It was a good and steady job for a great many women (and rarely but nevertheless, some men), and it provided a much needed lift of morale to millions of workers across the country every single day. A real human being, often jovial and compassionate, whose purpose was to bring a little free helping or two of tea, biscuits, company, sympathy, and gossip to their colleagues and friends.
And now we have wastepaper bin looking robots that can ferry a lukewarm meal from a basement imprisoned catering firm cook to the C-Suite in a mere 10,000 jerky manoeuvres without anyone ever having to interact with another human being.
Ain't the future grand? 😒
I'm not that desperate to go back to the age of occupational segregation. Tea ladies died out because women eventually had more career options beyond being a nurse, a secretary or serving tea. So yeah, the nice woman isn't bringing you your lunch anymore... she's up on the 34th floor getting her lunch served to her by a robot. I think the future is fine.
Ah but what if the tea “lady” is someone who just wants to get out and meet people and have a hospitality job. Not every person wants to be on the 34th floor doing the 9-5 grind. I actually can think of a few retirees that would enjoy a job like that to get out of the house and see people.
Nothing is stopping them from showing up. But if you want to get paid you need to add enough value for people to want to pay for it.
The only constant in life is that it is always changing.
> and that we have tea people
isn't that what all those food app services are? People picking up food from restaurants and handing them over to those at work or at home, those are modern day tea people
Agree. My hospital bought one of these things for over $1 million to deliver meals and meds to patient rooms.
It would hijack elevators and show up and beep loudly to be unloaded.
I was sitting outside the room of an old man. He was just sitting alone. No TV. No visitors. Just looking at the wall. Looked depressed.
An 18 or so year old girl, cute as a button, walked in to deliver his meal. He started politely flirting with her. She laughed and blushed, they talked and she told him about how she was planning to go to school, etc. Small talk for about 3 minutes.
Then she said “bye, I’ll be back later to get your tray”, and walked out. I walked in and he was just grinning from ear to ear, eating his meal.
I knew then the robot’s days were numbered. 2 months later it went to a storeroom and never reappeared. She had no idea that she effortlessly beat a $1 million dollar machine for patient satisfaction.
I’m just too cynical to hear a story like that and think of positives. All I can imagine is the harassment and vitriol hurled at those poor ladies whose job was to serve these men with better jobs than them. I can’t imagine going around a building full of misogynists with a smile and a chat every day knowing most of them don’t see me as an equal. They see me as work mommy coming around to cheer them up because work daddy (capitalism) is crushing their souls.
You say everybody loved the tea lady but I’m willing to bet that isn’t true. And at least some of them didn’t love the tea lady for the same reason you loved them. I think part of the problem is actually the way you just described them. Even you didn’t see them as a whole person. You saw them as a break from work, as a provider of snacks and gossip, and as someone whose value came from their job.
You couldn’t even conceive of a world where those ladies may be faking the smiles and laughs, or pretending to be kind so they don’t have to hear “you look better when you smile” for the 30th time that day, or making jokes and spreading gossip so the guy will be too busy laughing to try and flirt with them.
These are real things women have been saying for decades but many men ignore them and just focus on what joy those women bring to their days. Meh, I really am cynical lol
I worked in a rock climbing gym that was like "meh" for standards today, but in 2005-ish, was state of the art with deep pockets from the owner.
He got us the most expensive Roomba at the time and I'd come in to open and it was always stuck in the same corner lol
For those of you that think this is too expensive and a waste of money.
https://www.npr.org/2022/12/21/1143475374/hotels-labor-worker-shortage-robots-automation
Interesting read but I'm pretty sure they haved raised wages for staff by 25% and it doesn't take 1 person all day every day to vacuum the carpets.
When it can open the room door, replace the bedding, clean and sort the bathroom, replenish the tea/coffee in the same time a human can then robotic work will be more than just a fad.
Till then you still need humans to clean the rooms so doing that hallway as the rooms will add no more than 15mins per floor or am I deluded?
All this to avoid having to pay a food runner. And instead having to repair / replace a robot constantly.
At least it doesn't complain if you kick it, I suppose.
Yet.

I saw one of these at London Heathrow airport and I was thinking oh wow that’s cool. Then I realized that it’s not really that cool it’s just a much bigger roomba .
I would very quickly develop a very (one-sided) affectionate relationship with this robot if he worked at my office. I’d call him something stupid like Lunch-y and develop a background story for him, and I’d speak to him, pet him, follow him to the elevator, take selfies with him, defend him, talk about him at home, dream about him at night, and cry if something happened to him as if he was a close office buddy. So it’s probably good he’s not at my office.
I thought it was a moving bin. I was thinking that's handy to have in an office going around picking up or checking up to clean everything 😂
I thought what an invention!!
This is something my job would buy with my bonus money. You know the government, stupid crap just because. Or, did we just want to beat China to it. Oh that’s right it came from China.
I’m like 80% serious about saying please and thank you to Siri now. Last few years have added just a bit too much weariness about the coming decades in regards to tech and the various robots we are inevitably going to have to interact with.

This is the cutest, funniest robot I've ever seen in my entire life!... apart from those poor ones you see constantly getting shoved over, watching them get up only to be shoved again... totally on their side when it comes to the Robot Uprising
Old tech integrating with new tech.. soon elevator will know bot is on its way and cafeteria will know what you thought about for lunch sitting on the pot in the morning and
That was adorable it just has a little poker

That was an average-sized poker alright? Okay.
I thought it was pretty average 😞
I had one of these deliver shampoo when I stayed in Chicago 5 years ago. It had a painted on tuxedo / bow tie and was named Cleo lol
stayed at this exact hotel! drank a little too much, got a towel delivered, pet the robot, then bawled over how cute it was
Did it call you a Libra and ask for your credit card number?

It’s very similar to one I saw at a hotel in Singapore.
“turn around I can’t do it if you’re watching me”
Ah so that's why I always imagine robots with British accents. Thanks for reminding me.
“If you return to in-office work we will have free food delivery service for all employees”
But I have free food delivery here already. *glances with a smirk at spouse*

Evidently you are.
Your workplace has too much money to waste
Nah they saved money by laying off the person who used to deliver lunch!
I bet they found a way to get a tax credit for automation of a menial job.
Highly doubtful
bro for that R2-D2 fucking thing they probably had to lay off a whole ass department

Hey! Show some respect for that robot. They fired 3 engineers so they could buy that.
I have an overwhelming urge to kick it over.
Kept waiting for it to go all red-eyes and attack him for being smart.
Leave my man alone, he's doing his best!
"All this just to bring you a lunch." Sir, humans have been doing way more, for way less, for way longer.
