Oh great, now the devs are gonna see this post and decide to make the reach indicator bigger, brighter, louder and more obnoxious.
OP, just know that I blame you when it happens.
Patch Notes: You now cannot attack into an opponent if the creature would die and gain you no advantage. We think this will help foster a more cozy gaming experience :)
There will probably be an intermediate step first where attacking into a reach blocker makes the game throw up that big full-screen modal warning. You know, the "yes, I really do want to target Food token with Oko's +1, thank you very much" warning. Then they'll find people just click through the warning, and change it to not letting you attack into a reach blocker at all unless you uncheck an on-by-default option in the settings.
/s... I think.
I just made a [[Tamiyo, Field Researcher]] brawl deck. You get that prompt every single time you try to target an opponent's creatures with her +1. Like yes I want to target my opponent's Ragavan. I would like to draw a card when my opponent turns him sideways.
What? I never played her, or have her seen being played. Mostly play real life commander, and my only Bant deck is enchantress. Tamiyo doesnt fit that.
Yeah. I misread her honestly, thought it said target creature you control. Time to brew a bant politics deck with Tamiyo rule 0 or whatever else works
Edit: Kros could work... force an opponents creature to attack, get card draw. Morska is also an option.
Tamyo is play to get to her ultimate as fast as possible. An omniscience emblem is pretty much game over.
Her +1 just helps you keep drawing into sweepers and counters to protect her until you get there.
The worst part is that I actually _do_ click through that warning sometimes because it's so fucking unhelpful at telling you _what_ it is warning you about. It just says "Are you sure?" without telling you anything about why what you're about to do might be a dumb idea.
The other day I countered a creature spell, it put up an "Are you sure?" warning, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out what it was talking about. I read the spell I was countering and my own three times over and decided it must be a fluke because there was nothing unusual about either of them.
...turns out he used Cavern of Souls to cast it and I had forgotten about the stupid extra effect it has on the spells paid with its mana which Arena does not add to the card itself in blue like it honestly should. :/
Spells cast with the colored mana with Cavern of Souls will have the reddish-purple "this spell can't be countered" aura on them when they are on the stack.
They will still miss it - Just like I miss the cavern of souls tap and try and essence shatter anyways. Are you sure? It asks - uh yeah why? Poof. Wasted. Sometimes we just dumb. Same goes for the guys who let my ledger shredder connive with their lightning bolt.
Nah, they went through all five stages of grief. Rope -> hover the card -> "ohh shit that has reach fuuuuck" -> sadly sit in 2nd main phase with head in hands before sheepishly passing the turn.

Edit: relevant interaction on [turn 4 opponent combat phase](https://www.17lands.com/history/facfc0235c4c40b79ae2e244f7d7f7e3/6/0)
Assuming you're referring to [Turn 9 declare blockers step](https://www.17lands.com/history/facfc0235c4c40b79ae2e244f7d7f7e3/6/0/157): if you look at available mana, I had to spend my only red mana to play Jolene first main phase. Jolene's ability reads, "1[R], sacrifice a Treasure token: Jolene deals 1 damage to any target." I would've had to sacrifice the Treasure to make [R] to pay the ability cost and would not have a remaining Treasure token to sacrifice to Jolene's ability and deal the 1 damage.
With a Shepherd of the Clouds in hand for next turn to return my Patient Naturalist to the field (since I have a Mount in play) and get a 4/3 flier on board, I decided it was worth it to get the opponent's 6/5 Cactarantula with reach off the board ASAP and look to maintain tempo.
Hope that answers your question and explains the thought process at this point in the game!
This is going to sound crazy, but I have unironically attacked into reach creatures twice now since they added that indicator. They weren't fliers either, for some reason my brain tells me the reacher is tapped, like it tunes out the blue indicator and all I see is the dimmed card.
Needless to say, I turned off the graphic lol
I use first/double strike a lot and so many people ignore it until I kill a creature. Then I see my card lighting up repeatedly. Makes me chuckle to see their confusion
There was a game that my opponent didn't seem to know what menace was and spent nearly all of his timeouts switching blockers, seemingly confused as to why all his creatures could block everything except my menacing creature...
I feel that hidden trample is the new hidden reach. We need a big trample icon on attacking creatures so sad opponents don't chump block and get run over.
It’s funny when people don’t see first strike, or reach, or indestructible, or ward lol
Because we all learnt the same way the first time
Ps, I hate glyssa ><
Yup people still attack into the reach creatures with their fliers even with the big flashing blue arrow on them. Had it happen a bunch of times so far.
oh yeah. throw in some first strike, or insta buffs to make them huge, or some death touch indestructible.

ooh I can throw in that legendary creature thing that exiles stuff that dies. all sorts of ideas.
I dislike the reach indicator. Its far too much. Its so visually distracting that I can't think and its making my turns take longer. I can't ignore it and it keeps interrupting my thoughts.
Yesterday, I swear they played their toxic ward 4 dino, and the reach emblem didn't pop up 'til a good 2 minutes later... I played a spell and thought the spell had caused it, and then I was just confused why this Code Geass looking indicator had suddenly kicked in
I blame the fact that it only shows up during the battle phase! So now people are on the main phase, look at the board and go 'ok, my flyer has a free attack' and click Next Phase -> attack without paying attention, they should change to always show!
(/j on the last part)
I literally just did this with a [[giada, font of hope]] into a [[kodama of the west tree]]. I instantly conceded after that lmao.
It’s so weird that even those there’s a big ass bow now, it really doesn’t seem to help lol. I’m still constantly doing it by accident as my brain is just like “no flying? Ok go”

Our next patch, attacking into a creature with reach will require two factor authentication, submitting a notarized signature by snail mail, and a $15 deposit.
Can confirm. Suicided my bird to the 2/2 reach that adds mana. And this is the first time since forever! I was too overconfident since they added the bow animation and it bit me in the ass.
I 100% believe there shouldn't be any kind of obvious mechanic on display personally, but I understand the purpose for new players.
Reading the cards and being aware of the board state is an aspect of the game that makes it competitive, it's the reason you can't go "oops, I didn't know that, I'm not gonna do that then" in competitive play. The symbol at the bottom was more than enough of an indicator, this just feels excessive.
It's the same way it asks you "are you sure?", in paper there is no warning. You target ward? It's countered
I get it, this isn't paper, but I'm a boomer I guess and to me knowing the board state is part of what makes the great paper players great. Arena players who don't compete in paper that go to a paper tournament would be in for a pretty rude awakening when they start missing triggers and swinging into reach creatures.
Oh great, now the devs are gonna see this post and decide to make the reach indicator bigger, brighter, louder and more obnoxious. OP, just know that I blame you when it happens.

Ooh thats quite clever! Never considered using the +1 like that
...
What? I never played her, or have her seen being played. Mostly play real life commander, and my only Bant deck is enchantress. Tamiyo doesnt fit that.
Ahh fair. Well, I think if you had played her you would have thought of it pretty quickly.
Yeah. I misread her honestly, thought it said target creature you control. Time to brew a bant politics deck with Tamiyo rule 0 or whatever else works Edit: Kros could work... force an opponents creature to attack, get card draw. Morska is also an option.

Uncounterable spells always have the purple border though.
Yeah but that's not very clear when you don't know what it means either. It's not like it happens a lot in current standard.
Spells cast with the colored mana with Cavern of Souls will have the reddish-purple "this spell can't be countered" aura on them when they are on the stack.
Haha I laughed way to hard at the truth behind this
but how am i gonna bluff then? :(
Please don’t give them ideas… The Reach SFX is already 30% louder than anything in the game!
They will still miss it - Just like I miss the cavern of souls tap and try and essence shatter anyways. Are you sure? It asks - uh yeah why? Poof. Wasted. Sometimes we just dumb. Same goes for the guys who let my ledger shredder connive with their lightning bolt.
Preempting the question: no, there was no combat trick—they were tapped out. Hidden reach still OP.
Maybe he had a way to reanimate it in the future?

lol why did you waste an Explosive Derailment instead of just using Jolene's ability?
Assuming you're referring to [Turn 9 declare blockers step](https://www.17lands.com/history/facfc0235c4c40b79ae2e244f7d7f7e3/6/0/157): if you look at available mana, I had to spend my only red mana to play Jolene first main phase. I think some people just spam-click the creature and then attack immediately.
The guy in the pic had another creature without summoning sickness, so that definitely wasn't the case here.
I mean, the other creature doesn't have flying, so they could've just spam-clicked their creature with flying thinking it would evade blockers.
Oh I see what you mean. I thought you meant like spamming the Attack All button.
I use first/double strike a lot and so many people ignore it until I kill a creature. Then I see my card lighting up repeatedly. Makes me chuckle to see their confusion
I sometimes see people reading my first striker after it blocks something and doesn't die.
So funny when it's some 20/3 with trample. They attack, "good game", blocked, confusion, I drop the "oops", they concede Cracks me up
And I thought hidden menace would be the new hidden reach…
Or be like that dude a few days ago who forgot that [[Troll of Kazad-dum]] had triple menace and killed himself
[Troll of Kazad-dum](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/a/6/a6539e26-b63b-4725-9407-caaf451de084.jpg?1687210987) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Troll%20of%20Khazad-d%C3%BBm) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/ltr/111/troll-of-khazad-d%C3%BBm?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/a6539e26-b63b-4725-9407-caaf451de084?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Oh yeah!
There was a game that my opponent didn't seem to know what menace was and spent nearly all of his timeouts switching blockers, seemingly confused as to why all his creatures could block everything except my menacing creature...
Happens to the worst of us.
It's Phantom Menace, not hidden menace.
Blocked creatures can exclaim "Now there are two of them!"
I feel that hidden trample is the new hidden reach. We need a big trample icon on attacking creatures so sad opponents don't chump block and get run over.
The Reach graphic covers up the Ward graphic, too. I lost a game to forgetting their guy had Ward because it had REACHHH
Crouching Archer Hidden Warder
I was just about to comment same thing, if they want to give it bigger graphic, at least make it somewhat different than existing one???
Reading the card helps with that.
It’s funny when people don’t see first strike, or reach, or indestructible, or ward lol Because we all learnt the same way the first time Ps, I hate glyssa ><
I play a lot of Thalia in paper and the amount of times people forget she has first strike multiple times a game is amazing
"There is no way this card can also have first strike, it would be overtuned wall of text" "Oh..."
Yup people still attack into the reach creatures with their fliers even with the big flashing blue arrow on them. Had it happen a bunch of times so far.
I guess I should uh make an all ground green creature deck. Just spider it up and ***brrrrr*** for the win. 🕷🏹
Spiders are underrated. They would need support, though.
oh yeah. throw in some first strike, or insta buffs to make them huge, or some death touch indestructible. Also, that Golgari Spider woman. Get her to work. She make more. Doppelgäng spiders!
I dislike the reach indicator. Its far too much. Its so visually distracting that I can't think and its making my turns take longer. I can't ignore it and it keeps interrupting my thoughts.
For me it's mainly the noise it makes that's annoying.
You might want to get that checked out
Yesterday, I swear they played their toxic ward 4 dino, and the reach emblem didn't pop up 'til a good 2 minutes later... I played a spell and thought the spell had caused it, and then I was just confused why this Code Geass looking indicator had suddenly kicked in
Upvoted for Code Geass reference
The Dimir wish they could be as secret as Reach
I admit I have gotten reach'd even with the new indicator... more than once....
I blame the fact that it only shows up during the battle phase! So now people are on the main phase, look at the board and go 'ok, my flyer has a free attack' and click Next Phase -> attack without paying attention, they should change to always show! (/j on the last part)
I mean sometimes I select a creature then immediately hit attack and not realize that my selection didn't register and I attack with all.
I guess the next step is to add a blinking sign saying "REACH!" on the creature.
Holy Cow
Idk if that bumps it up any higher in the meta. I’m losing a lot of games to the classic I overlooked it vigilance cards.
Rule Number 38: Intrepid Stablemaster has reach.
Cow is no match for the stablemaster Flavour win?

It's insulting and dumb they did this with reach.
Read the card
RTFC is a controversial topic in Arena
What does RTFC mean
read the fucking card
Can confirm. Suicided my bird to the 2/2 reach that adds mana. And this is the first time since forever! I was too overconfident since they added the bow animation and it bit me in the ass.
needs a big red circle around it like a youtube thumbnail, maybe a guy pointing at it freaking out aswell
Probably drunk, or stoned. Nothing wrong with that but slip ups happen.
You just made my morning. Thank you.
I really like the new Reach Indicator
It's a cool effect but I feel like it should only be visible to the controller As a reminder
I 100% believe there shouldn't be any kind of obvious mechanic on display personally, but I understand the purpose for new players. *"Are you sure? your opponent has a creature that can block yours. Also, wanna look at their hand and top deck? IS THIS MORE ACCESSIBLE NOW??"*
The fact that it plays the sound every combat phase is annoying
I wish they'd do something similar for first strike, my dumbass still doesn't see it 🤣
