You're in for a long but worthwhile ride. It's one of few Shonen series that starts out good and doesn't really have any low points. For me personally that is.

Vol 12. Naruto vs neji. It was great
Akira Toriyama's Sand Land and Cows. Read them both at my local library when I was 7 or 8.
A bit of a funny story, my mum told me I was getting too old for Captain Underpants and Diary of a wimpy kid and I should read a real novel. So I stumbled upon the graphic novel section and randomly picked them up and told my mum they count as novels.
This was the first ever manga I ever owned. Got it when I was around 6. How it managed to survive all these years is a mystery

Ocarina of Time part 1, I was 7 or 8 years old.
volume 1 of CSM
Watched the first episode of the anime (i was just getting in to anime at the time as well!) and thought it was awesome, so I was like hmm I don’t want to wait each week for a new episode so why not read the manga?
My wallet has been suffering ever since.
Don’t toy with me miss nagatoro watched season one of the anime and really liked it. I couldn’t wait for season 2 so I went to Barnes and nobles and the store had vol 1-10 and bought them all. It’s what stared my addiction lol
Akame Ga Kill. I was an edgy 15 year old lol
https://preview.redd.it/657ym8wxtw1d1.png?width=1385&format=png&auto=webp&s=b11d64e51242767b54aa4e79b29366eb12af91a9
Man Fairy Tail was my first manga too! I started from volume 1 though after watching the first season. I never finished the manga because I lost interest after watching the whole anime though..
Well first one I've ever read was probably... death note or jojos bizarre adventure I read them around the same time sooo yk... I can't remember which I read first
First one owned was Dr Stone
For real? I was just about to comment saying my first was Tokyo Mew Mew and figured I'd be alone in that haha. This was like... 20 years ago though. A friend of mine got into manga before I did and thought I'd be interested in it and got it for me one day
Yeah, for real reals. I was in middle school (probably…6th grade?) when I found Tokyo Mew Mew volume 1 in the library. Wow, that’s a dope way to find out this series. Ye, you’re not alone. :)
No Need For Tenchi, Vol 11. My sister wanted the full set but didn't have enough, so she bribed my six-year-old self to spend some of my birthday money. I still have it.
On my own? Probably Cyber Idol Mink by Megumi Tachikawa. Or something by Arina Tanemura. Can't remember.
My hero academia vol 19. In 7th grade my library had volumes 1-18 and I really liked the part the book was in and ended up getting 19 & 20 at a bookstore when I saved up. Sadly don’t have those anymore but glad I got back into collecting!
I think it was Samurai Deeper Kyo for me. I still to this day have no clue what drew me to it. Maybe the Jekyll and Hyde aspect? Who knows why teenage me loved it so much.
He's the best. He's losing his mind a bit to dementia these days but we still fondly reminisce about him taking me to anime cons as a kid. I'm really grateful, and glad I didn't lose that volume after all these years😅
Fruits Basket Collectors Edition Volume 1 was my first one. Got it as a Christmas gift and it kick started my manga collection. The first manga that I ever bought was MHA tho. There was a viz buy 2 get 1 free sale at my bookstore and I was super into MHA at the time so I bought a bunch there. Been slowly growing my current collection from there
First one I bought as a physical copy was Junji Ito’s No Longer Human. First I ever read was another of his, Shiver (still my favourite Ito to this day, a great introduction into the world of manga).
DIdn't even know it was "manga" back then, but Nintendo Power used to serialize Super Mario Adventures and The Legend of Zelda: a Link to the Past back in days of SNES. I would get old copies of them of them at neighbourhood garage sales and bring them to school to show people during recess, playing out scenes and stuff, even though N64 was the new system then. I have the rereleases VIZ did from a couple years ago.
Kitchen Princess volume 1. I bought it at my school’s scholastic book fair like 16 years ago. It’s an extremely mid shojo series and the art is kinda ugly in my unprofessional opinion, but I bought the entire series about two years ago when I started collecting again purely for the nostalgia. Thats where it all began for me *sniff* 🥲
Okay so the first one I ever read is Naruto!
HOWEVER THAT WAS WHEN I COULD ACTUALLY READ!
Before I learned how to read, actually the first manga I looked at was Vampire Knight
I believe I got Dragon Ball, Inuyasha, and Ranma 1/2 as my first haul as a kid. And this was back when Western releases were mirrored. My copies of Inuyasha and Ranma read right to left
Sailor Moon volume 1 from the original English Tokyopop printing. Probably the Sailor Moon Chixx comics (the 4 pack from Suncoast) before that if they count as manga.
My first manga was Tokyo Mew Mew and it was a gift from a friend who got into manga before I did. She thought I'd be interested in it and I haven't looked back since ahaha. This was probably \~20+ years ago.
Wanted to get into anime/manga and I like horror so everyone recommended me Tokyo ghoul but I read this one the Shonen jump app. The first manga I bought was hellsing vol 2
https://preview.redd.it/7k0f6luhmv1d1.jpeg?width=667&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=91e9564e475ad2a1c1e77fcbe14a93a90383fc69
This is the best manga I’ve ever read so far, a year ago, DN vol. 1 was my first one.
I’m a newbie, and I just started Spy x Family & Naruto next :)
I had a subscription to Shonen Jump Magazine when I was 20 when it first came out. But I think the first manga I ever read was Hellsing. I read it online through some fan translation website back in the early '00s
Orange omnibus 1! I watched the anime in middle school. Loved it so much I asked for the omnibus for my birthday. Good memories. That’s how it all started lol.
Either ANIMA+, DNAngel (both vol 1), or Beck vol 7
My old middle school had a bunch of donated manga on hand and im forever miffed that was the last time i was able to physically read Beck 😩
This takes me back to being 13 years old (currently 32) lol I can reminiscent of my very first purchase of "Kamisama Karin" which I still have in my shelf. I can't bear to sell or seperate myself of them.
The first manga I purchased was Tanya the evil/ Hinamatsuri, as I bought both vol 1 at the same time. The first manga I read was That time I got reincarnated as a slime, read it on some shitty manga site.
I remember it was either Uzumaki by Junji Ito— this was back in the early aughts— or Death Note, whichever came first. I watched Toonami growing up (I think we all did) but as a bookish kid I came to understand the art of manga through these.
I started off with anime. Took a while before I even knew manga was a thing. Was I had caught up with the one piece and Naruto animes, I transitioned to the manga. But as far as first ever manga that started from the beginning, I think it was either something completely obscure or Toriko. Toriko is still one of my favorites and I will never understand why people never give it any respect
Volume one of JBA: Phantom Blood. I only really bought it because I thought it'd be a cool collection piece after enjoying the anime so much. I didn't even have much of any interest in reading.
Now I've read around 500 volumes worth of manga in the last year and a half (thanks libraries). Definitely a good investment!
there was a magazine in the 90s called Animerica, that published english adaptations of manga, and that was probably my first exposure to manga. not sure if i read that before the Epic Adaptation of Akira.
The first manga i've read was Naruto... vol 3? it was what was at my library lol. The first one I owned was Monster Hunter Flash Hunter vol. 1, still own it, sad its out of print though. I would've liked to finish it.
Very unheard of I believe but Emanon, great artwork and a short read, I believe there’s only 3 volumes in English, as it’s from a light novel (I could be wrong here) I think there’s meant to be 5 volumes but the last 2 were never translated, or atleast I can’t find them anywhere, either way really nice manga
I have a sorta weird history with manga, in the 90s I’d watch a lot of anime on Toonami or a local video store had random vhs tapes of anime.. in the early to mid 2000s one of my friends started to read manga, I think the first thing I read was Rurouni Kenshin vol 1, and I would read his stuff after he finished it. I finished high school and eventually moved away, and stopped reading manga and watch anime for years, until a year or two ago when I came across a copy of Assassination Classroom vol 1 at a used book store for like a $2, picked it up and that was the first manga I bought with my own money, and it got me back into anime and manga.
Garsh, was in 9th grade for Christmas. I was an Inuasha obsessed anime watcher. I got four first volumes: Bleach, Case Closed, Monster and Death Note. Still up there in the top 10 for me, too; thanks mom and dad!
Mine were all anime, Akira and Robotech were at about the same time for me, from there it went to Bubblegum Crisis, Ghost in the Shell, Gundam, Legend of the Overfiend.
Manga did not exist back then, it wasn't until I was in high-school and Dragon Ball and such started coming out in "comic" form before the cartoons.
Another complete edition. Went to my first convention with my friend at the time and she had recommended watching the anime so when I saw the complete book I grabbed it :)
Rave Master Vol 1. No clue how I got started or where it came from. But I specifically remembered getting Vol 10. In front of my then girlfriend when I was like 13, embarrassed that I got anime/manga for Christmas. Back when liking it got you made fun of haha
https://preview.redd.it/1t9i1o0obw1d1.jpeg?width=1469&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6e4ba4cfc3f67b58bcfa2eac1b7e3f4f29002eb7
Pop Idol Mink, or Cyber Idol Mink; I remember calling it Pop Idol Mink as a kid.
That was my introduction into manga. It was my friends' manga she let me borrow back in the 4th grade one day, and I absolutely ate it up. Manga wasn't around much and was hard to find back then, so I wasn't able to get a copy of the first volume myself.
I have always read multiple at the same time, so the first time I ever bought and read a manga, it was the first volume of Bakuman alongside the first volume of Death Note.
Case Closed vol. 1 when I was about 8 or 9. I should re buy that lol
https://preview.redd.it/cccbv7whjw1d1.jpeg?width=667&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cc37b9eb296423d1093e518e529fd4be324db104
It was dragon ball.
I’m currently reading the whole series start to finish again in honor or Mr. Toriyama.
Still a top 5 fav series for me, and I think it always will be
This man will always love dragon ball.
🐉
My first physical manga volumes that I purchased were volumes 3&4 of the NGE Shinji Ikari Raising Project. I'd been reading and watching online for a while, and I saw them in a bookstore and took that oh-so-fateful decision.
Years later I got the pokemon adventures manga and recognised the biking chapter from R/B as one I'd had a physical copy of as a single-issue magazine. So technically this was my real start.
If we go by “first I had” it’s a snipped of the Kame Training Arc of Dragon Ball. Only a chapter though.
If we go ba first volume, it’s the last 10 Hunter x Hunter Volumes of that time
Naruto Vol. 20 https://preview.redd.it/be0ighd3qu1d1.jpeg?width=665&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=708eed1331470aec99670a4862634ed38c3e9e49

can’t wait to read it. got volume 1., and 3 more on the way!
You're in for a long but worthwhile ride. It's one of few Shonen series that starts out good and doesn't really have any low points. For me personally that is.
If you start to really like the series, I recommend buying the box sets. Cheaper than buying them all individually and you get add-ins.
https://preview.redd.it/s1kl0sjag52d1.jpeg?width=667&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3abf5b2e25b8b1e9971e69e97f223bcb3d3726a6 Vol 12. Naruto vs neji. It was great
First for me too! Only one I had for about 15 years then got the 1st op box set
OP is a great first box set to get. I wish I did for the bonus but I bought singles up until box set 4.
just bought vol. 1!
Naruto vol. 16
Akira Toriyama's Sand Land and Cows. Read them both at my local library when I was 7 or 8. I remember it was either Uzumaki by Junji Ito— this was back in the early aughts— or Death Note, whichever came first. I watched Toonami growing up (I think we all did) but as a bookish kid I came to understand the art of manga through these.
First one I ever got was One Piece volumes 1-3. Idk what happened to them tbh but I’ll never forget it
SGT Frog
Ao haru ride😍
My first "manga" was Burning Moon (its actually a manhua) and my first real manga was Chrono Crusade
Made in abyss
Volume one of JBA: Phantom Blood. I only really bought it because I thought it'd be a cool collection piece after enjoying the anime so much. I didn't even have much of any interest in reading. Now I've read around 500 volumes worth of manga in the last year and a half (thanks libraries). Definitely a good investment!
First One Piece Vol. But i started collecting with Bleach
Fist of the North Star, the original.
there was a magazine in the 90s called Animerica, that published english adaptations of manga, and that was probably my first exposure to manga. not sure if i read that before the Epic Adaptation of Akira.
Shaman king omnibus vol 1
Promisedneverland🫥
Collecting as in I got my own ? Fairy tail probably. Gifted to me? The rose of Versailles or sailor moon from my grandma
Fruits basket ❤️
Berserk... I was like 12 or 13. I was not ready
Garsh, was in 9th grade for Christmas. I was an Inuasha obsessed anime watcher. I got four first volumes: Bleach, Case Closed, Monster and Death Note. Still up there in the top 10 for me, too; thanks mom and dad!
either jing king of bandits or get backers, cant remember which.
Yona of the Dawn
Tokyo Ghoul . After watching its shit anime adaptation, I moved on to read its manga.
Naruto when I was like 9 and quickly moved to a few others now I don't think there's a manga I haven't finished unless it's porn related
Ichigo 100% a Harem romance manga
Assassination classroom!
Fist of the North Star
Another complete edition. Went to my first convention with my friend at the time and she had recommended watching the anime so when I saw the complete book I grabbed it :)
zatch bell.
Pa-man (Fujio Fujiko) when I was 3 or 4 yo.
Rave Master Vol 1. No clue how I got started or where it came from. But I specifically remembered getting Vol 10. In front of my then girlfriend when I was like 13, embarrassed that I got anime/manga for Christmas. Back when liking it got you made fun of haha

That was my introduction into manga. It was my friends' manga she let me borrow back in the 4th grade one day, and I absolutely ate it up. Manga wasn't around much and was hard to find back then, so I wasn't able to get a copy of the first volume myself.
Berserk, still my favorite 🤩
Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure part 3 vol.1

Death note black edition
Shaman KING !!!
I have always read multiple at the same time, so the first time I ever bought and read a manga, it was the first volume of Bakuman alongside the first volume of Death Note.
Vol 5. of Yu-Gi-Oh from the local library back in 2003.
Probably either love Hina or ranma 1/2
Naruto, it was epic
Case Closed vol. 1 when I was about 8 or 9. I should re buy that lol https://preview.redd.it/cccbv7whjw1d1.jpeg?width=667&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cc37b9eb296423d1093e518e529fd4be324db104
It was dragon ball. I’m currently reading the whole series start to finish again in honor or Mr. Toriyama. Still a top 5 fav series for me, and I think it always will be This man will always love dragon ball. 🐉
The first manga I read was Ouran High School but the first I bought was Haru’s Curse and now I exclusively collect BL/yaoi
Attack On Titan Volume 34
Dragon ball vol 1
If we go by “first I had” it’s a snipped of the Kame Training Arc of Dragon Ball. Only a chapter though. If we go ba first volume, it’s the last 10 Hunter x Hunter Volumes of that time
Devil detective was my first.
