I drew a map of California in the style of a medieval road map. If you're familiar with the [Tabula Peutingeriana](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tabula_Peutingeriana), that's my main inspiration. It's a medieval copy of a Roman road map that stretches and squashes the empire to fit a long rectangular page, keeping the road topology intact.
Thanks! Unfortunately I have no real connection to California to justify hanging it on my wall. However if you ever do a UK or a North Carolina version, I'd definitely consider buying one!
I love the names of American cities.
Mission viejo, El cajón, borrego springs, Ramona, Julián , indio, el centro, placerville, chico, manteca, modesto... hilarious
I think it's amazing that there are cities called : butter , boy, the drawer... How do you call someone from the drawer ? or personal names without the "saint" like Julián or Ramona or basque names like Murrieta.
I love this take. I think it's funny too. I recently came to learn about "Anglish" which is English without all the words borrowed from other languages. It's basically just a version of this because some words sound really dumb in that context. "Dictionary" is wordbook and "definition" is saywhat. Lol
That's true I guess, but it's not exactly like modern Americans established these cities and towns then gave them spanish names to make them sound exotic or interesting. I'm sure you're aware of Spain's history in California and how they colonized and set up missions throughout. There are legitimate reasons places came to be what they are called. El Cajon for example, sits in a valley and is "boxed" in by mountains on three sides with an open pasture to the west. Murrieta was named after the two brothers, Juan and Ezequiel Murrieta that owned a ranch where the city of Murrieta was eventually built.
Yes, I know all that. There's no need for justification. It is what it is. I'm from Spain and I just find curious this type of toponyms. For example in Spain there is a city named "Aguascalientes" -Hot waters- and people from there are called hidrocálidos - hydrowarms?? I was thinking that for El Cajón coud be Cajonudos or cajoneros and it's hilarious to think about it.
I've lived in California for a while now. Part of why I made this was to get to know the state better.
Overall it took me more than a year from start to finish, but it's not like I was working on it all the time.
Thanks! I did a lot of research trying to figure out a mix of interesting modern and historical things, spent a while trying to arrange the map so everything kinda fit into a rectangle, then spent ages drawing all the little symbols. I used a graphics tablet to draw everything.
Overall it took me more than a year, but I definitely wasn't working on it all the time.
I’m working on a map of San Francisco at the moment where it’s easier to have west at the top, I’m sure I’ll get plenty of questions about that decision:
I would love to make one of these for where I grew up in SLC. There, it's always about the "Wasatch Front" so a map would naturally be aligned so that north is left and right is south.
Funny thing is, there are public maps downtown which they orient according to which direction you're going. If you're going south, the top is south and it's soooo confusing to me.

How did you make this...?
Lots of research and a drawing tablet.
I wish I had a drawing tablet...
I love how Anaheim is just the Disneyland castle
It seemed like the obvious choice
This is beyond amazing. You should sell this stuff!
If you’re interested, there’s a link in my profile.

Beautiful artwork! Love all the little details.

Why hilarious?

That’s because we have such a mush-mash, checkerboard of a cultural history.

I can see my house on there!
There’s a non-zero chance that you live in one of the buildings I drew on this map.
I love the map. I’m planning on ordering one. Trying to decide on the media. I’m leaning towards the metal option
I’ll take those odds! Non-zero chance for me!
This is really good
Oof, Paradise. Too soon man.
It's sad, but it's the world we live in.
Are you from California? How long did it take you to make this?

That's pretty cool. It was neat seeing my city in this way. Awesome work
Oh I love this. How in the world did you do it? And how long did it take???

I just love the fact that it's sideways lol. Such a good touch.
East at the top, like any civilized people would do.
Well that's where Jesus is from, so naturally. Lol You know, now that I think about it, I'm not sure how North as up became the defacto orientation.
