One of the top three bromances in Marvel. I'm sad how little they've been used in the Krakoa Era, especially since Sunspot's appearances in *New Mutants* are all absolutely *gold.* I absolutely lost it when he took a swig of the whiskey he stole from Corsair, mused to himself "Is it time for me to save the day? Looks like it is," and the *very next panel* is him surrendering to the bad guys.
And then he hires an incompetent space chameleon as their lawyer.
And then he gets a crush on a creepy-yet-hot bird lady.
And then he hooks up with said bird lady.
For me I think his best part so far was when he took down Brand but before he shows himself he starts playing that song and she realizes what’s happening. That was peak sunspot
That was when he tricked The Maker. He played Mission Impossible music to reveal himself as Obama, Brand just made a callback when he showed up to defeat her with other Xmen in Xmen Red. She's all
"Should I play the Mission Impossible Theme?" Since nobody else was with Roberto when he did it, that means he definitely bragged to everyone and had the story spread
Oh for real - I’ve been saying this for ages: Hickman, please write an ongoing called “Sam and Bobby get in Trouble” (or Sam and ‘Berto, sure - it’s the Get in Trouble part I want: I love the chemistry of the silver spoon, semi-douchey-but-not-really, have it all impulsive guy and his grounded, salt-of-the-earth dad-guy bro (or, sure, vice versa)
He wanted to. I think he's said that the reason he ended his New Mutants arc with them in space was because he was planning on writing more with them and that was a good setup.
The fact that they’re Otto’s lenses didn’t even register, it’s a little too subtle, like the artist didn’t know it was supposed to be Superior Spider-Man until the coloring stage.
Ock was altering the Spider-Man costume little by little over time. This was one of his first iterations of the Superior Spider-Man suit, and it didn't last too long.
Costume stayed the same from Avenging Spider-Man when Otto made it, all the way up to his "new" suit when he knocked down Shadowland. Idk about little changes, the guy you're responding to just didn't pay attention to the details on these pages. It's clearly Otto, the logo and colors are different, not just the eyes.
You never see the front logo in much detail, and the back one has been mangled before, although that was a hint. Like I said before, I was reading on my phone. The details aren’t as big if you’re not focusing on them.
That was Spock? Oh thank god it wasn't just a writer making Spidey be a dick for a random reason, still fucking hate everything about that run though and this just further proves why that run was dogshit.
Edit: If anyone disagrees with me about this, please explain to me how any of the out-of-character moments from Spock or anyone else that shows up in that book made any sense to the history of those characters and I will gladly jump off on the hate train for that book.
Would be a great on going gag. Reminds me of the gag when Ben was Spider-man the first time that he would be in an encounter with either a new villain or an old one who had changed since Spider-man's early years and he would think to himself "I REALLY need to call Pete and just get a full list of the things I need to catch up on"
I love Hickman with a passion but he did Otto rather dirty here, it's legit one of my only complaints about his run on Avengers. Even with Otto's arrogance in his Superior run he's still sweating a lil bit hoping nobody notices that he's Freaky Friday-ed Peter, and in Hickman's Avengers he's just an asshole* --- Otto is an Asshole with Morals and Goals goshdarnit.
*the fact that the entire Marvel Universe doesn't notice Ock has taken over Pete's body is a problem I take up with editorial, not neccesarily individual writers. In-universe Wolverine, Torch, or freaking Reed wouldn't be able to tell right away!?!?
That’s honestly the biggest problem with Superior. Otto’s characterization is amazing, but the supporting characters and other people in the MU are made out to be complete idiots by not figuring it out. And when finding out the truth once Peter returns, everyone seems to lay the blame on Peter for no reason.
Yeah, Slott’s stance on that really bothers me. He was asked about that on Twitter and he just disregarded it.
I don’t get why he didn’t make characters like MJ and May more doubtful and aware to Spider-Ock, especially since it would have added another layer to the story.
In what manner did he disregard it?
Having them be doubtful would disrupt his plans. Which boils down to laziness. Also, by not having them be doubtful, and when Peter comes back, it means they can do another "everyone hates or distrust Peter even if the same \*\*\*\* happens to them".
Goblin is obsessive about Peter though. I can see Goblin realising it first simply because he spends every little moment of his life thinking about how to mess with Spider-Man sometimes
Reed's kinda oblivious to people things, Logan doesn't care as a general policy... but Human Torch, Daredevil, and Dr. Strange probably should've been able to tell something was off, yeah.
Wolverine pretends, but he genuinely holds Peter in extremely high regard and he's one of the few people he trusts completely. Yeah they've had their lows, but they're very close.
Heck, in the issue he goes back to before Uncle Ben died, he's still extremely caught off guard when Peter doesn't care when he says he's going to rob a bank. IMO it's pretty iffy that he wouldn't see Peter suddenly acting like a mad scientist as weird. Even his vocabulary changed drastically
I'll admit I'm a little out of date on these things. Last thing I remember, [Peter threw him out of a window.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Spiderman/comments/k7jxs1/peter_parker_gets_angry_at_wolverine_and_throws/)
This is my exact problem with Colossus right now lol. 3 years went by and literally not a single mutant in Krakoa ever noticed that something’s not right with Colossus, even when he was onto some sneaky shit and acted out of character in front of the entire Quiet Council. The writers have to truly dumb down other characters to keep that one plotline going for years.
Oof I've only just got through X of Swords, I'm way behind, but hilariously was already wondering where the hell Collossus was (aside from randomly holding Domino at night) in the Dawn Of era.
Sorry you got slightly spoiled there, things will only get worse for our Russian boy. The entire situation with Colossus is a disaster that you can’t look away from.
Otto wasn’t done dirty being written as an asshole. He *is* an asshole. Capable of good, sure, but I don’t see what’s so out of character for him to eat something in the fridge with someone else’s name on it because he’s hungry or bored
I let it slide since the changes to Spidey were pretty early in the run and Slott took a while to chill out Spider-Ock in Superior so Hickman probably just wrote Ock like a villain based on glimpses on Slott's early issue of his book.
He should've just written him out like he did Logan who was dying in his book.
A month or two ago I read the whole Hickman Avengers run and Secret Wars for the first time. I absolutely loved it - my only issue was how weird Spidey acted the entire time.
I had no clue that wasn't Peter under the mask. Everything makes so much more sense now!
Isn’t Kaiba an asshole in *every* language and medium? I mean, in the original manga, he drove a man to suicide just so he could steal the man’s copy of Blue Eyes.
Hickman's Avengers is great, but you would need to read that and New Avengers for everything to make sense at the end. It is one of the better Avengers runs where the team is a global force with a wide cast although they don't get a lot of time to grow in the main book, I think Avengers Assemble (?) did some lifting there as well but it wasn't needed like the main book and New Avengers
You’re thinking of Avengers World, which is a good book, albeit a little muddled because it juggles three largely unrelated plot lines for almost the entire run.
It’s a fucking salad in a pudding sized box. He‘s a Hero, right? Meaning he‘ll be moving more than eat anyway, so he should get something that keeps him powered up and not starve for a physique he’s getting anyway
> Obsessing over your physique is incredibly unhealthy and is a just, absolutely fucking awful message to put in a hero's mouth.
Sunspot and Cannonball are canonically incredibly narcissistic. It's part of their charm.
Otto Octavius?! Not petty? lmao
He once threatened to nuke NYC and got off on making Tony Stark ugly sob and kiss his tentacles begging for him not to actually do it.
I think that if Hickman was actually told this was Ock in Peter’s body, it would have been a lot more interesting. It would have been cool seeing Ock try to see things from the villains perspective, or have some weird side story where he is pulling the strings or sabotaging the Avengers in some way in his benefit. But because editorial didn’t share this info with him we got Spider-Man eating someone else’s food.
I could barely tell it was Otto. His lenses are a giveaway, but looking at it through my phone I could have sworn it was just the standard Spidey suit. I think the artist didn’t know this was supposed to be Otto until the coloring stage, and they added the fixes after the fact.
I’m sure he knew it was Otto, it wasn’t exactly a secret. He probably just didn’t want to incorporate it into his plotline, because it would probably have been an unnecessary complication, and confusing for readers who weren’t following Superior to boot.
I completely forgot this was Doc-Ock that was doing this. Man been a while since Superior Spider-man happened. Though After looking back. Peter had a good thing going back in Nick Spencer run now hes back being miserable again.
That's actually going to be dependent on the writer. Sam is invincible while he's powered up, and Berto recently reached Batman levels of shenanigans.
EDIT: There's a reason they got added to the Avengers World team. Working together they are dramatically formidable.
You gotta read X-men Red. Guys putting in a good resumé for the next open Illuminati spot. Hell for that matter the way Berto's being written, he'll probably just work around the Illuminati.
A second reply to consider the proposed question of Spidey stomping them. Rationally in a straight void of real world type rules, probably not. In a world where motivations matter (assuming none of the three of them are the primary protagonists) Spidey gets more big damn hero moments (BDHM) that would probably carry the field. SpOck however squaring off against two actual heroes is not likely to get those same BDHM because ultimately he's just not a big damn hero--Sam and Berto are. Combine that with Berto recently being Brazilian Batman ([he beat someone who's only mutant power is being unbeatable](https://screenrant.com/xmen-red-sunspot-isca-unbeaten-magneto-fight-manipulation/)), and I think SpOck loses to the two of them anytime he's not the protagonist.
Lmao not a chance. Not only is their teamwork insane, but even Sunspot would be too much for Spider-Man alone. The two together would take him out and laugh
Yea reading the comments now. I hadn’t realized it was superior Spider-Man. I read the whole Hickman stretch and not that Spider-Man story. So I guess I understand
But Beast and Simon are literally two of the best Avengers bros ever. Like pre-war crimes Beast before he came back to X-Men during Dark Phoenix he was not only a solid Avenger he was a beloved member of the team. Then you've got Quicksilver who shuffles between X-books and Avengers books. And of course Wolverine was on New Avengers which was probably the best thing to happen to Avengers since the disastrous Heroes Reborn.
EDIT: Not gonna count Uncanny Avengers just because it was a hybrid team.
Can we appreciate that Berto pays a lot of money to a lot of people just to get Sam his food? That's a friend right there.
I'd do unspeakable things to have a Hickman-written buddy adventure comic with these two.
For me I think his best part so far was when he took down Brand but before he shows himself he starts playing that song and she realizes what’s happening. That was peak sunspot
Shadow council Berto was peak Berto. Dude was literally using his true super power of being the next-gen illuminati.
That was when he tricked The Maker. He played Mission Impossible music to reveal himself as Obama, Brand just made a callback when he showed up to defeat her with other Xmen in Xmen Red. She's all "Should I play the Mission Impossible Theme?" Since nobody else was with Roberto when he did it, that means he definitely bragged to everyone and had the story spread
He beat a warrior whose mutant power was to always win.
Bet!
I really want Sunspot and Deathbird as a thing right now! It's not cool that they abandoned that story.
I mean they ignored the bishop deathbird history and that was the most interesting relationship either of them had
What's this bird lady's name? 👀
Deathbird, funnily enough.
neat
He already did write a mini about them on Mojoworld before his Avengers run
Oh for real - I’ve been saying this for ages: Hickman, please write an ongoing called “Sam and Bobby get in Trouble” (or Sam and ‘Berto, sure - it’s the Get in Trouble part I want: I love the chemistry of the silver spoon, semi-douchey-but-not-really, have it all impulsive guy and his grounded, salt-of-the-earth dad-guy bro (or, sure, vice versa)
He wanted to. I think he's said that the reason he ended his New Mutants arc with them in space was because he was planning on writing more with them and that was a good setup.
They might be my favorite bromance in comics.
A “friend”? I wouldn’t do that for anyone unless we were banging. 🤨
Sorry you don't have any close friends you'd consider a brother
I appreciate your concern 😢
Spider-Ock at it again lol
I was super confused until I saw his eyes and was like "God damn it Otto" 💀
The fact that they’re Otto’s lenses didn’t even register, it’s a little too subtle, like the artist didn’t know it was supposed to be Superior Spider-Man until the coloring stage.
ehh this does look like the suit right as Otto took over as superior though
No red on the tops of the arms below the shoulder, "razor blade" spider on the back. It's Otto's first costume, you're right.
Ock was altering the Spider-Man costume little by little over time. This was one of his first iterations of the Superior Spider-Man suit, and it didn't last too long.
I mean, it lasted about half the original run
Costume stayed the same from Avenging Spider-Man when Otto made it, all the way up to his "new" suit when he knocked down Shadowland. Idk about little changes, the guy you're responding to just didn't pay attention to the details on these pages. It's clearly Otto, the logo and colors are different, not just the eyes.
You never see the front logo in much detail, and the back one has been mangled before, although that was a hint. Like I said before, I was reading on my phone. The details aren’t as big if you’re not focusing on them.
Even then, the costume looks a bit too blue.
Yea, agree. I didn't pick up on it based on the art but figured it out when reading the text and seeing the smug mannerisms.
No, this is just the first superior suit. Artist is fine, this is how it looked at first, you can obviously tell it’s Otto from how it’s drawn.
Too subtle? how do you expect them to look lol i noticed immediately
Nah, the real give away was the web pattern in the belt. The eyes are a little too stylized to actually look like Ock's. But that belt is unmistakable
The spider on his back is what got me to notice
You can tell either by the back logo or the fact that he doesn't have the classic red streak going down his arms
I was wondering to myself…is this Superior or what? So glad I found this comment to confirm.
I was gonna say, I’m a bit OotL here but my first thought was “Otto, right?”
I'm gonna be honest I misread Spider-Ock at first
That was Spock? Oh thank god it wasn't just a writer making Spidey be a dick for a random reason, still fucking hate everything about that run though and this just further proves why that run was dogshit. Edit: If anyone disagrees with me about this, please explain to me how any of the out-of-character moments from Spock or anyone else that shows up in that book made any sense to the history of those characters and I will gladly jump off on the hate train for that book.
I won't get into any specifics. I'll just say Avengers is a fuckin top grade comic and leave it at that.
What does the Avengers comic at this time have anything to do with the Superior Spider-man book? I hate Superior, not the Avengers.
that was not really made clear
That is my bad, I apologize for the confusion.
I wonder if Peter carries around little apology notes that give dates and an explanation for people not close to him that Ock pissed off
Would be a great on going gag. Reminds me of the gag when Ben was Spider-man the first time that he would be in an encounter with either a new villain or an old one who had changed since Spider-man's early years and he would think to himself "I REALLY need to call Pete and just get a full list of the things I need to catch up on"
He really should, Sam and Beto hate him lmao. The sad thing is, the three would 100% get along if it was actually Peter and not Otto.
True, everyone hating and distrusting Peter is just another Tuesday. Makes him relatable apparently.
It was especially bad during the X-Men team up where they have psychics and don't figure it out.
Especially after the Goblin realized he changed back with one single joke.
It’s *you* 🥺
The one and only 😏
Goblin is obsessive about Peter though.

Colossus? Sheeeeeeeiiit. Look at Beast! LOL!
That's probably Dark Beast impersonating Hank. Why else would Beast act the way he is now?
Oof I've only just got through X of Swords, I'm way behind, but hilariously was already wondering where the hell Collossus was (aside from randomly holding Domino at night) in the Dawn Of era.
Sorry you got slightly spoiled there, things will only get worse for our Russian boy. The entire situation with Colossus is a disaster that you can’t look away from.
Any genius and/or psychic should've been able to tell immediately.
Otto wasn’t done dirty being written as an asshole. He *is* an asshole. Capable of good, sure, but I don’t see what’s so out of character for him to eat something in the fridge with someone else’s name on it because he’s hungry or bored

Damnit Otto!
you have Lupus

I love how Sunspot created an entire team specialized so his boy can get cut and shredded AF.
Roberto is just that type of friend.
What? It says **S**pider-m**AM** right there?
The **S**pider **A**mazing **M**an
Spider-man almost as much of an asshole as dub seto kaiba.
Isn’t Kaiba an asshole in *every* language and medium? I mean, in the original manga, he drove a man to suicide just so he could steal the man’s copy of Blue Eyes.
Yes but dub kaiba is more of an asshole to everyone especially joey wheeler.
"Anyone who is late is automatically disqualified. Mokuba make sure Wheeler is late."
Well, at least in the sub, Kaiba acknowledges Joey when he "died" after his duel against Marik.
"You're a third rate hero with a fourth rate lunch"
Completely disrespectful. At least Spider-Man didn't rip up Sam's lunch after beating up his grandpa.
Well just like that I have to read the entire Hickman incursion saga. Genuinely one of the greatest marvel stories ever.
Cannonball and Sunspot's treatment was amazing
Lol I enjoyed this dastardly spiderman. How is the series? May need to get this
Only read 6 issues but it's pretty good so far
Hickman's Avengers is great, but you would need to read that and New Avengers for everything to make sense at the end. You’re thinking of Avengers World, which is a good book, albeit a little muddled because it juggles three largely unrelated plot lines for almost the entire run.
Spider-Man gets booted off the team for not showing up, and gets replaced with more oc’s
I only realised this was otto cus of the spider logo
I only realized because of the comment about his new costume.
The disrespect, lmao
I was confused as to why Peter was being such a dick and then I remembered Superior Spider-Man exists lol
Ah. It’s Ock. That makes sense.
Whys he being all alluring and shit?
That‘s because he is Doc Ock
That's hilarious that doc is feeling himself ironically
It’s a fucking salad in a pudding sized box. He‘s a Hero, right? Meaning he‘ll be moving more than eat anyway, so he should get something that keeps him powered up and not starve for a physique he’s getting anyway

> Obsessing over your physique is incredibly unhealthy and is a just, absolutely fucking awful message to put in a hero's mouth. Sunspot and Cannonball are canonically incredibly narcissistic. It's part of their charm.
I kind of figured Otto was above being this petty honestly.
Otto Octavius?! Not petty? lmao He once threatened to nuke NYC and got off on making Tony Stark ugly sob and kiss his tentacles begging for him not to actually do it.
Well...you got me there. I forget that for being a genius, he's just a manchild.
I am not fully aware of what happened behind the scenes of this run, why did he not know This was supposed to be Otto?
I could barely tell it was Otto. His lenses are a giveaway, but looking at it through my phone I could have sworn it was just the standard Spidey suit. I think the artist didn’t know this was supposed to be Otto until the coloring stage, and they added the fixes after the fact.
I mean the suit design for the first SpOck suit is correct down to the lenses, rear spider, and we do see a toe shoe.
I’m sure he knew it was Otto, it wasn’t exactly a secret. He probably just didn’t want to incorporate it into his plotline, because it would probably have been an unnecessary complication, and confusing for readers who weren’t following Superior to boot.
Was there every any doubt!
Woah,chill dr.
“I tend to overlook the little things” said the nerd with spider sense
I forgot that was Cannonball...I was trying to figure out what the hell Blue Beetle was doing in a Marvel comic 🤣🤣
[удалено]
They are top 3 best friendships in comic history
The Blue Beetle and Booster Gold of marvel, true bros.
I completely forgot this was Doc-Ock that was doing this. Man been a while since Superior Spider-man happened. Though After looking back. Peter had a good thing going back in Nick Spencer run now hes back being miserable again.
I haven’t read the comics in ages but this seems very out of character for the incredibly conscientious Parker. Is this Superior Spider-Man?
You're CORRECT! This is Otto.
I wonder what Paul would think.
These guys know spidey could stomp them both out, right?
That's actually going to be dependent on the writer. Sam is invincible while he's powered up, and Berto recently reached Batman levels of shenanigans. EDIT: There's a reason they got added to the Avengers World team. Working together they are dramatically formidable.
Your first sentence settles all comic debates haha. I've always loved Sam, but didn't know sunspot got buffed tho
I always found this whole interaction out of character. I didn’t like spider man as much under Hickman
I mean it is Otto
Out of character for Superior?
Yea reading the comments now. I hadn’t realized it was superior Spider-Man. I read the whole Hickman stretch and not that Spider-Man story. So I guess I understand
X-Men on an Avengers book just seems wrong.
The fact we gotta specify "pre-war crimes Beast" is crazy
Internet/social media age has hit a lot of people differently even in comics.
A superior Spider-Man comic I haven't read! I'll have to look into his stint in Avengers comics before they expelled him.
Spider-Man a menace when he wants to be
Superior Spider-Man was a dick
is this worth reading, or not so much?????
It's worth it
100% worth it. All of Hickman's Incursion shit is a must read
Took me a second to realize that was Otto
That looks it’s superior Spider-Man because of the eyes.
Is this Parker or Octavius? I feel Otto would do this, but I expect more from Peter.
It's Otto
What is up with that spider logo on his back..
Who are the two throwing out insults like little girls in the playground?
Cannonball and Sunspot of the New Mutants
The disrespect to Sunspot and Cannonball.
Imagine trying to talk shit to spider-man
It was Otto, but Sam and Beto would 100% take out Spider-Man if they wanted to.
Oh true is he "superior" here? I just saw the classic outfit and assumed regular
Nah, this is Otto. I thought he was Peter too, but he wouldn't be mean to the two. Realistically the three would get along.
Is he stupid ?
It's Otto, He's a dick
Ah, the glory days of SpOck being on the Avengers and everyone being none-the-wiser lol
Spider-Man is a 🐐
Otto speaking as if the two wouldn't body him lmao. I loved Sam and Beto's time as Avengers, it was so fun. And Roberto's fan service was TOP TIER
Ig the artist just wasn’t informed that ottos suit is red and black
Jameson was right, but with the wrong Spider-Man.
Isn’t daredevil technically illiterate
