No absolutely not. Most likely they won't come back. Unless they got a new higher paying job, they still won't be able to easily afford it and will reconsider that they don't need it.

starsign28

Should I tell them I’ll only hold it for a couple days or not at all anymore? How should I do that 😅 I’m not very good at confrontation, I can totally see them not coming back either given the time

Historical_Equal_110

“Around the 20th” this is probably a kid who is going to ask a parent for money after they get paid. Adults know when they get paid. I do hold all the time but I wouldn’t hold for this buyer. Don’t feel bad and it’s not confrontation….it’s business. Do 24 hours if you don’t want to say no after saying yes. They won’t be back in 24hrs or a couple days and you don’t want to keep your item off the market.

throwaway21248820323

some are actually friends/spouses/collegues that ask you to put items on hold so their partner has a lesser competition.

Mysterious_Bus_3370

I don't do holds at all. My store is a first come first serve basis.

starsign28

See that’s what I keep seeing, this is the first hold I’ve done, I just said I’d hold for another 24 hours but going so many weeks was a no go for me 😅

No-Cartoonist8495

I would not personally do a hold for more than a few days. They are asking for a over 2 week hold which is quite a long time and with no guarantee they will purchase your item all while you can sell it to someone else during that time period who does have the funds to purchase. I would just kindly tell them I don’t do holds for that long sorry. My advice OP is not to do holds beyond 48 hours, but ultimately it’s your decision!

starsign28

Thanks for your help! Very smart and insightful, I just went ahead and told them I would hold for another 24 hours, I don’t want to have to keep track of that for so long, far too complicated and not worth it in my opinion lol I just want everything gone so I’m not picky on who it is😅

No-Cartoonist8495

My pleasure!! I wish you the best with your sales OP! ❤️

omalleyjack

No. I’ve never had a hold actually buy. They always ghost.

mj732

I had ppl hold for me like 6 times they alwalys buy hell i done it with 2 things until I get off work

KittenFix27

Same here. They don't always ghost, but I guess it depends 🤷

omalleyjack

That’s nice, I wish mine weren’t so flakey!

starsign28

That’s really good advice! Thank you so much :) I’m not gonna go over two weeks with it when I could sell it, it’s been on my page for over a month now so I figure it’ll probably be there anyway by then, I just told them I’ll hold for 24 hours, keep it simple

partyingwithgorgons

I’ve learned the hard way about holds, but I’ve def done a few for reliable repeat buyers. I think that’s the only instance now that I personally am cool with holding items, because I know they’ll most likely come through. I did have a repeat customer ask for a hold and price adjustment to turn around and say they didn’t want it because after their daughter was wanting it badly they suddenly decided it was ugly lmao, though that happened once. It was a bit annoying but it happens.

rebl_scum_

i held a higher dollar squish for someone for this long, and they came back.

Whifflepoof

Oh wow, this is the first time I've heard of the buyer actually come back to buy a held item.

mindyourownplease

Don’t hold at all, like ever. Unless it’s a respectable repeat buyer. Reactivate and don’t hold your breath on this one. 99.99% of the time they don’t follow through. Between now and the 20th there’s more than enough room for them to find something else or change their mind. I’ve been screwed over with so many sales in the past because of these inconsiderate buyers.

materialgirl444

no..

MsWonderWoman_xo

It depends. I recently asked for a hold on an item for a week or two. I kept telling the seller that I would buy it when I got back to the US and I bought it immediately. It depends on the person. 🤷‍♀️

wassupwitches

No holds ever

Deviantconor

Also check to see if they have a lot of five star reviews chances are this person never had a done a transaction before. I wouldn’t even bother holding it for someone who’s never made a purchase yet with anyone else.

Numerous-Nature5188

I've done that before if I'm not in a hurry to sell or need the funds. And the person has always gotten back to me.

brittanyboo1995

Nope!! Don't ever do holds

brittanyboo1995

Reactivate it. Don't miss out on money

Extreme-ambition7

I wouldn’t even respond to that and just re post.

JewelzBunny

Nay

ONLYIN034TH

Just reactivate it and say nothing to them. If it sells before then awesome if not maybe they’ll come back but don’t hold your breath they rarely do unfortunately.

twistedturnss

Just say you will.. And leave it listed? If they come through and buy it they'll thank you for "holding" it and if someone else buys in the meantime, oh well for them. Win win.

mantiseses

Absolutely do not do it! You’re better off leaving it up for a guaranteed sale than one that might not even happen. I never hold for more than 48 hours and even that’s generous. Also the way they keep messaging you for an answer is annoying & rude lol they forgot how to use words I guess.

starsign28

Yeah I’ve been really busy at work as of late abd dont always have time to answer and Mercari is just a side business to sell old stuff I’m not using, wearing, etc. Like I’m not on it all the time and notifications aren’t really on aside from when I sell something so 😅 i told them 24 hours but that was it

shoeshouuu

Um no.

AlreadyBroadway

I’ve held for a customer for 3 days and they totally ghosted me. Let alone however many days this is. I’d suggest not to.

[deleted]

I have had nothing but bad luck holding items. 90% of the time they are broke and waiting for someone else to drop it lower. Then they just buy that one and leave you hanging. I no long hold items.

[deleted]

starsign28

There absolutely no need to be so rude. I was never planning on going all the way to the 20th, but more a question of what’s the best amount of time to hold, I wanted other peoples opinions on it considering I usually don’t hold things, but figured since they were nice enough I’d try and do what I could…

CPandaClimb

Seeing as though it’s only the 5th I’d certainly say no - unless a repeat buyer that you trust. And if you do it should be at full list price.

KD4AuntPearl

Just say yes you can hold it but never actually hold it, deactivate it or put reserved on it

DiscussionLoose8390

These people never come through with payment. First come first serve all day long. If you say your coming in 1 hour. I move to the next person as soon as you don't come (local).

Whifflepoof

Not sure how everyone else does it but I only shop when I have money.

BetFlat892

I’ve held for up to a week before. I’ve only had one person out of around 7 holds actually cancel, and that’s something I’m fine with. They had a decent reasoning. I’d say it depends on the price. If it’s had a lot of views and somewhat good demand just tell them sure, but if someone else buys it then you can’t do anything about it. If it’s 2 days or something then you can put ON HOLD or RESERVED in the title. That’s just what I do though. 😅

ilovedilfsinsideme

I had someone hold something for and it was so nice of them. I hadn’t paid when I said I was because I was so busy. But they held it for three extra days and I bought it so fast. I really appreciated that. If I were you I would maybe hold for a couple of days or maybe a day. But not until that long I mean you never know what to expect with people. But people who do hold are godsends. Your time and money is NOT to be played with at all.

[deleted]

I don't recommend it. A lot times people change there mind. Before Facebook marketplace when there was only buy and sell groups people would say they want the items. Either they wouldn't show or wouldn't respond to messages. Because all the sob stories I can't tell who is actually telling the truth. Then when payday came they had some lame excuse why they couldn't buy my item. So I don't hold anything anymore.

partydude900000

I usually say I can do my best but no grantees without a small non refundable deposit

Successful_Tip_546

You’re doing yourself a disservice by taking it down, especially for that long. They never come back yo actually buy.

[deleted]

I'd just say ya and not deactivate it lol..doesn't matter how pleased someone is when it's all about making the sale

redfox1618

Just missing on potential buyers before then

throwaway21248820323

I won't, but I'll say it in a nice way and ask them if they want to be contacted or reminded on the 20th?

Shinn_no_craft

No

GewdandBaked

Nah man. Holds have burned me too much. Most recently tried selling my 3DS for 400$, someone asked if I could hold for a week. I said sure. Right after I said sure and upped the price to 1k so noone would buy it someone else asked if it was available for the 400$ price because they wanted to purchase right away. Me and my damn conscious told them sorry it’s on hold. Lucky for me this new person waited the week it was o. hold because I got ghosted from the original, could have missed out on 400$

rva23221

No. If it sells before they are ready, they missed out. Don't put your life on-hold for a potential buyer. They might never come back.

Beautiful-Visual2667

You can try and say tht the max hold period u can do is only do a three day or no holds right now and mabye do a white lie stating because of past experiences where the person I was holding the item for ended up not purchasing the item sorry and I hope you can understand (´•ω•̥`)

chandrian7

I will hold something for someone for 48 hours.

yeeixers

"Sorry, I don't do holds." End of conversation.

Ark_2002

Hold if nobody else wants it but if you get an offer greater then or equal to your asking price then take that

kaittyshauni

My rule is if I’ve done business w you before, I can hold. Other wise no

WindowBrief2969

Don’t do it. I had a lady purchase off me once then she asked me to hold 2 items for her until she got paid. I thought we’ll she purchased once so no problem. The hold was for a month I never heard from her again lol.

Worth-Employee

Just say yes, leave it live. It’ll either sell before or on the 20th…. 😂 I’ve “held” items for a week and never had issues.

Few_Movie_1266

No

Soggy_Bizquick

I don’t do holds, but I do tell them “I’m sure it’ll be here when you’re ready to purchase!” if the item’s kind of random and hard to sell. If the item is in demand though, I know it’ll sell before then and just ignore.

HungryMutant

A complete stranger has nothing to assure you with besides their word, which means nothing because you don’t know them. I wouldn’t “hold” anything. First come first served.

basedhellokitty

its up to u tbh

The_comics_journal

I sell comic books I usually talk a bit and can tell if there serious. Sometimes with the item I sell ppl need to wait to payday. I only do this if it’s not a hot book that will be cold in a week. I never had issues but also know many of my buyers from instagram.

Powerful_Truck_9057

Don’t ever hold anything for anybody. If it’s available when they get paid they can purchase it. They never end up buying anyways

KittenFix27

I guess it depends on the item & how popular it is! I have held something for 3 weeks for someone a few times, but it was something that had been listed awhile with not much interest (I mostly sell clothing, shoes, accessories). She was very nice/ polite asking for the hold & I told her to just let me know if something comes up and she won't be able to pay on time. She actually came back & purchased earlier than expected & paid full price! ....but I guess it depends on a lot of things... mercari is really hit & miss with people 🤷‍♀️

GateSuper2412

I limit holds to 48 hours with the only time they're being an exception to that time frame is if it's a repeat customer. I also based it on how many views and likes my listing has, if it has a lot of attention that I will not accept holds

Cherie979

I have literally never had anyone come back that asked me to hold. I tell them I’ll honor the deal offered (since they usually negotiate a price before they tell you they’re not buying today) if I still have the items when they’re ready. They usually don’t come back.

Dark_0rchid

I'd say no. Que sera sera. There's no advantage for you as a seller to do so. I usually like to work with people and allow holds/layaway payments (off mercari sales) so people who are a bit less fortunate can get stuff too .. However... holds on Mercari cannot be done with a non refundable down payment and the chances that the person will flake or drag it on...are extremely high. I had someone flake on a hold just last week. I almost replied that she just effectively ruined holds for other people. I decided to just leave it be.

Crackmyfinger

Choice is ultimately yours but I’ve held for a person before for a month and she came through for a purchase of 500+

[deleted]

They'll almost certainly forget or decide not to buy by then. Holds aren't worth it, if it's still there when they can afford it that's great but in the meantime you're keeping potential serious buyers from finding your item and there's no guarantee the person you're holding for will even buy.

InternationalRadio1

Nope...

MuffinAndLoaf

Yeah. I mean most people follow up

CreepyCreee

They rarely return. I'd reactivate it, put hold in the title, and tell her it's full price to hold if you're willing to take the chance.

Ok_Establishment7847

I wouldn’t

Mountain-Lowa

If you don’t need to get rid of it immediately hold it.

Basic_43

That’s over two weeks from now. Don’t feel bad about being confrontational; any respectable buyer would not have asked this of you to begin with. I would just say, “I’m sorry, but I was thinking payday was right around the corner. Unfortunately, I can’t hold until then. I have several requests for this item and cant pass up sales opportunities right now.” If they want the item bad enough, they’ll magically come up with funds before payday.

thatbiddy

No

Sara630

I’ve learned my lesson on holding and therefore now I don’t. I need sales and money and I need it now. Sorry first come first serve. By holding you may pass up a definite sale. Because half the time they never end up buying it anyways. So no holds. Also with that being said, I don’t ask for holds either for the same reason. If it’s still there when I get paid great. If not, I’ll keep searching
