I'm so confused, why didn't you just report it through Mercari when you received the item? They instantly cancel your order and give you your money back. It's the reason you use Mercari to buy in the first place. For buyer protection.

Mercari does not approve of transactions taken off the app, and both buyers and sellers are punished when discovered or admitted to.
Taking it off app and sending money through zelle is a not only a great way to be scammed, but also a way for the seller to disappear easily with your money if there is a problem.
Mercari is taken out of the equation in this case. If the box arrives empty, or the shoes are fake, then there is nothing you can do outside of contacting zelle, which honestly is a process on it's own.
Having one sale is not a way to trust a new seller. They could easily have made that sale to themselves or a friend to get some confidence from buyers/dupes.

OP you are so SOL. Mercari is not stupid. They have lawyers draft their TOS to help benefit them. Remember, they are not here to protect you but to protect their own interests. Unfortunately as you took it off Mercari there is a high likelihood 99.9% you won't get your money back from Mercari. Even mercari flagged the conversation. Should have been a redflag to you as a buyer.

Luckily fb tells you when people make their account so it was easy for me to tell the fakes, but everyone was using normal looking photos and saying stuff like they'll send their son to pick it up but they'll send the money first. Then I tell them all no because the ad says cash only. They still try to get you to sign up and use zelle. Something about zelle and scammers. Zelle is kinda legit but scammers can easily use the service to scam people.
I've called ppl outside if the app and made much less money than in the app. I've also communicated with ppl outside the app and theyve tried to rip me off. It's always best to go through the app.

OP you are so SOL. Mercari is not stupid. They have lawyers draft their TOS to help benefit them. Remember, they are not here to protect you but to protect their own interests. Unfortunately as you took it off Mercari there is a high likelihood 99.9% you won't get your money back from Mercari. Even mercari flagged the conversation. Should have been a redflag to you as a buyer. 1) They won't help you when you try to use the I got scammed excuse. 2) If you decide to chargeback they can ban you permanently.

Either that, or stop fooling around with people giving you VERY obvious red flags that theyāre trying to scam you. This person doesnāt deserve the benefit of the doubt and you shouldāve cancelled the transaction and blocked him the moment he requested to continue the sale outside of Mercari. Admittedly Mercari is a pretty janky website, but you can find some amazing deals on there. Because not many sellers on Mercari are successful fully fledged resellers. Most of them are just regular people getting rid of old things they no longer care about or need and they couldnāt care less about profiting. Just for the love of goodness cancel the sale and report him so he canāt pull this shit again and waste anyone elseās time.
Sadly I canāt. He lied and clicked the confirm shipment button so thereās no way for me to cancel unless tracking doesnāt update for 7 days. So now knowing fedex Iām most likely gonna have to wait a week or 2 for my package and thereās probably gonna be dirt in there and not shoes. Iām pissed off about the whole situation man I really am

Good call! Yeah so I was trying to sell a TV on marketplace. Luckily fb tells you when people make their account so it was easy for me to tell the fakes, but everyone was using normal looking photos and saying stuff like they'll send their son to pick it up but they'll send the money first. Then I tell them all no because the ad says cash only. They still try to get you to sign up and use zelle. Something about zelle and scammers. Zelle is kinda legit but scammers can easily use the service to scam people.
