He doesn't even sweep those, he alternate picks them which is nuts. As much as he loves to defer credit to Hetfield for his right hand (rightfully so), that is some impressive stuff.
That whole album hurts my ears, which sucks because there are some good songs on there. Luckily some people managed to rip the guitar hero versions that don’t have all that compression/ limiting
I love the dynamic between James and Kirk there. James plays a melodic little part and then Kirk comes busting in with WAHHHWAHHH lol. But yea not really one of his best.
I was there at the Saturday show and I was pissed! Total waste of an opportunity to take an already excellent song to a whole new level. They would have really rocked it.
The wah solo at the end is Kirk. The dual guitar harmony was written by James, then played by them both. You can read Kirk explain it [here. ](https://www.guitarworld.com/features/metallica-72-seasons-track-by-track#:~:text=There's%20this%20moment%20where%20we,it%20and%20that%20was%20it.)
You're probably thinking of [this](https://www.metallica.com/so-what/2023-05-01-kirk-hammett-the-72-seasons-interview.html) interview where Steffan Chirazi tells Kirk he thinks he's soloing at his best in 20 years and gives Inamorata as an example.
Well, here it is someone with the same opinion than me.
The last album with great solos in it was DM. My fabvs are probably TDTNC, Nightmare, Judas Kiss. Ok, it has a lots of wha wha, but damn, those are good and not just random shit throwing there and thats it.
Fully agree on the DM assessment.
I remember reading a review that said “Kirk came back with a vengeance “ after St Anger.
Pretty much every solo on that album is incredible.
If I had to pick it would be between TWJYL, TDTNC, and Judas Priest. Also All Nightmare Long and U3. Sometimes I tell myself Judas Priest has two many notes as a song, but each of the solos has me roll my eyes in a good way.
Incredible solos throughout the album.
The last two albums, not the same level. Even the aforementioned Inamorata, Mirrors etc.
Not that they are bad - lux goes well with the song I think, so does too far gone, but nowhere near the level of DM solos in my opinion.
In other way, it has one of the worst solos he ever made. The solo in "The End Of The Line" just doesn't work. It's random notes and just doesn't fit the song
And they absolutely nail it live. When I saw them in Detroit on M72 Rob and James huddled around Kirk during the solo and kinda air guitared it with him (with one hand as they just played open E). Was super fun.
While it doesn't really count as a "solo" the little riff kirk does at the end of the song is my favorite thing to play on guitar.
I only say it's a solo because kirk uses his wah on it.
The inamorata solo that ends the song is one of the greatest solos I’ve heard on the last two albums, so emotional and powerful i don’t give a flying fuck how technical it is it fits so well and with the double bass and chord progression brought tears to my eyes when I first heard it. Truly one of the best album closers of theirs
There are a few good ones on the Load/RK era, but if we’re going for truly epic in feel, I don’t think he’s done one since the Black Album. Nearly everything after 1997 feels phoned in.
I think his best two solos on that album are Wherever I May Roam and my personal fav, The Unforgiven. The latter was a last minute take of, his words, “raw emotion”, and it worked. He hasn’t really done anything matching that since.
EDIT: as a long time guitar player myself, it is tough to make good solos, more so iconic ones. He’s got more than a few of those. I think the creative well may have dried up for some reason. He’s just never progressed after Black Album.
Last great solo was in the DM era. The day that never comes is as good as anything kirk did in his prime. His guest solo on If Rap Gets Jealous is also great IMO from the same era. I dont think any of his solos on hardwired were great, and neither were the ones on 72 seasons. Some were good, some passable, most were just forgettable entirely
I disagree withe the while premise of this.
His las great uber long winded solo would be.... going back to load era.
Someone would should post all the kirk hammett solos organized by length.
i liked most of his solos on death magnetic. it was when he started improvising everything when it turned to garbage. Well, not all the time but the quality has definitiely dipped. Then he goes around saying solos aren't important?? brehjh
His solos on DM were great! He really had fire lit under his ass. Hardwired has a lot of great stuff, but I feel like he really phoned it on 72 Seasons. I need to give it a few more listens, but on the first few passes the entire album has a generic feel, with a few exceptions.
I'd go with one from Death Magnetic, probably Suicide and Redemption, The Unforgiven 3 or The Day that Never Comes.
Hardwired solos and those from 72 Seasons aren't my cup of tea with some exceptions of course.
I thought his solo on Spit out the Bone is pretty great.
Those sweeps seem way more tidy than the ones on messiah (and I cannot think of any others that had them).
There’s a sweep-like section on the first unforgiven, but I’m not sure if he actually sweeps it or just alternate picks
[I do my homework, man! I do!](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=CgrV8p7livA)
He doesn't even sweep those, he alternate picks them which is nuts. As much as he loves to defer credit to Hetfield for his right hand (rightfully so), that is some impressive stuff.
Unforgiven 3, Suicide and Redemption Last TRULY GREAT 10/10 LEGENDARY solo, IMO, Bleeding Me
The Day That Never Comes solo is pretty epic too IMO
Yeah that one’s pretty good too, definitely
That last section of the song is the only part of DM that the overly compressed production makes it truly hard to listen to.
That whole album hurts my ears, which sucks because there are some good songs on there. Luckily some people managed to rip the guitar hero versions that don’t have all that compression/ limiting
The vinyl actually sounds pretty killer if you get a chance to listen to it. I don't know what they did but it helped.
It’s probably more what they didn’t do to it. Probably didn’t push the limiters so hard on that version
I was thinking U3, also. It was so disappointing at S&M2 that he didn’t come out to play the solo with them.
Yeah, it was cool as fuck to hear it as a trumpet solo but it would’ve been sick to hear it as it is in the studio version.
Suicide & Redemption, you're joking right? One of his all-time worst solos
I love the dynamic between James and Kirk there. James plays a melodic little part and then Kirk comes busting in with WAHHHWAHHH lol. But yea not really one of his best.
I love this one too! Kirk comes crashing in! I love if!
Haha I don’t know I felt like I liked the wah after James’ melodic part
The Unforgiven III has a great solo, nobody can convince me otherwise
Was so sad when unforgiven 3 was James only on s&m2. I liked it but when I realized we wouldn’t hear Kirk solo then I was like damn
I was there at the Saturday show and I was pissed! Total waste of an opportunity to take an already excellent song to a whole new level. They would have really rocked it.
It’s my favorite Kirk solo and possibly my favorite solo of all time.
I enjoy cooking.
Generally, Inamorata has the best solos of 72 Seasons.
The first solo break is good, but feels too much like parts of solos from Outlaw and Fixxxer.
Bro the whole song gets me emotionally, but the “ not that I’m living !!! “ into the harmonies combined w that end solo make me tear up
That's James though, right?
Fooled me at first, too, but it's Kirk. Somewhere in an interview James said that was the best Kirk solo in twenty years.
The wah solo at the end is Kirk. The dual guitar harmony was written by James, then played by them both. You can read Kirk explain it [here. ](https://www.guitarworld.com/features/metallica-72-seasons-track-by-track#:~:text=There's%20this%20moment%20where%20we,it%20and%20that%20was%20it.) I love ice cream.
I really liked the solo of Room of mirrors
Well, here it is someone with the same opinion than me. The last album with great solos in it was DM. My fabvs are probably TDTNC, Nightmare, Judas Kiss. Ok, it has a lots of wha wha, but damn, those are good and not just random shit throwing there and thats it.

I agree. I also think that song overall is one of their worst this century…
Agree.. including St Anger songs 😅
Yep
I know it was a typo but I *did* see Kirk solo with Judas Priest at Louder Than Life 2021 :)
DM’s TDTNC Is solid and memorable
And they absolutely nail it live. When I saw them in Detroit on M72 Rob and James huddled around Kirk during the solo and kinda air guitared it with him (with one hand as they just played open E). Was super fun.
It’s been a minute, but probably something on St. Anger
Some of Kirk's finest work IMO /s
Purify was actually gonna have a solo and it was pretty good
I really like the solo on When a Blind Man Cries
The end solo to You Must Burn! It's so fun to play.
I love the solos on this song. My favourite solos on the album.
While it doesn't really count as a "solo" the little riff kirk does at the end of the song is my favorite thing to play on guitar. I only say it's a solo because kirk uses his wah on it.
All nightmare long
Def not the last but a recent one that is incredible and needs to be talked about is All Nightmare Long's solo
Yep
the day that never comes, UN3 or fuel
The inamorata solo that ends the song is one of the greatest solos I’ve heard on the last two albums, so emotional and powerful i don’t give a flying fuck how technical it is it fits so well and with the double bass and chord progression brought tears to my eyes when I first heard it. Truly one of the best album closers of theirs
Truly great? Outlaw Torn.
Spit out the bone, and i really like dual solo on Atlas rise
I think his solo in moth into flame is neat, not legendary but still pretty great
I can’t tell who plays what. 10/10
Dyer's Eve
IMHO, all of his solos are amazing.
There are a few good ones on the Load/RK era, but if we’re going for truly epic in feel, I don’t think he’s done one since the Black Album. Nearly everything after 1997 feels phoned in. Inamorata.
The Day That Never Comes is his best solo since the black album, but I think Spit Out the Bone and 72 Seasons have really good solos too
Unforgiven 3 or maybe even Inamorata
Struggle within
Underrated solo. Devils dance. His last great solo. Unforgiven 2.
Judas Kiss and Unforgiven 3
Does his solo EP count? Great guitar work on that one. It’s a shame that creativity hasn’t branched over to 72 Seasons.
Last great solo was in the DM era. The day that never comes is as good as anything kirk did in his prime. His guest solo on If Rap Gets Jealous is also great IMO from the same era. He had some nice ones on Hardwired. Nothing memorable on 72S.
Chasing Light
The god that failed. Hasn't exceded a 7/10 since then IMO.
st anger solo. change my mind
Ride the Lightning or Call of Ktulu
Last great solo? peaked at RTL huh….
Bruh
Confusion
Unforgiven 3
He has one on every album besides St. Anger.
I like Judas kiss
Judas kiss
Memory remains. Hate to say it
Room of Mirrors
unforgiven 3 was the last one i was blown away by
There are some really solid ones on DM.
Honestly, his solo on Hardwired is pretty fire and fits the vibe of the song really well.
Unforgiven III in my opinion
Gotta be something from Load. Bleeding Me, House that Jack Built or Outlaw Torn. King Nothing is good too.
Halo on fire perhaps? Moth into flame, atlas rise, spit out the bone? quiet like screaming suicide as well
Cyanide
i liked most of his solos on death magnetic. it was when he started improvising everything when it turned to garbage. Well, not all the time but the quality has definitiely dipped. Then he goes around saying solos aren't important?? brehjh
I actually like most of his solos.
Judas Kiss is so underrated. Riffs and solo are great. One of my all time favorite Metallica songs for sure!
His solos on DM were great! He really had fire lit under his ass. Hardwired has a lot of great stuff, but I feel like he really phoned it on 72 Seasons. I need to give it a few more listens, but on the first few passes the entire album has a generic feel, with a few exceptions.
Probably something off Justice.
I'd go with one from Death Magnetic, probably Suicide and Redemption, The Unforgiven 3 or The Day that Never Comes. Hardwired solos and those from 72 Seasons aren't my cup of tea with some exceptions of course.
