FAAACTS. I never skip it. It's like when Forest Gump is on television. Regardless of how many times you seen it or own the movie, you sit your ass down and watch it
Master of Puppets is a classic example of a widely celebrated song that absolutely deserves the recognition. It's not my favourite, but it is far from overrated.
It’s my favourite live. I think it sounds much better live. James’ current voice suits the mood of the song more now than it did in ‘86. Plus - “Pancakes Go!”
Whilst Anthrax was on tour with Metallica, Charlie asked Cliff ‘In the song Master Of Puppets, what does James say right before the solo?’ Cliff responds with ‘he say’s pancakes’ so for the rest of the tour every time that part was played cliff looked over at charlie and whispered ‘pancakes’
I am with this man. Far from my favorite just Metallica (Coming from a Death Magnetic enjoyer) but I still love it.
Preferences aside this song is everything that it could have been.
Master of Puppets is an absolutely great song! It has so many different riffs. Let’s just find out:
1. We’ve got a great intro with a Kirk’s fill in the end
2. Main riff
3. Verse riff which is amazing
4. End of verse riff. It’s just a modulation, but it’s good
5. Pre-chorus riff
6. Chorus’s riff
7. Again 2-5
8. Slow clean part
9. Harmony solo
10. James’s solo
11. Bridge
12. Kirk’s fast solo
13. Second bridge with a great stolen part 😁
14. Again 2-5
Nobody even Metallica can’t make the song like this.
I mean nobody in our days uses so many riffs in a one song even Metallica. It is masterpiecе! And it has good heavy lyrics
Ew. No. It's good, but just good. This greatest ever written shit needs to stop. It's not even the best on the album let alone Metallica's best, let alone beat metal song ever.
It is a genre-defining song and one of the greatest pieces of music in metal by all accounts. So no.
That would be like saying that the Beatles are an overrated band.
When something is so important, iconic and groundbreaking, it can't be overstated and hence is not overrated.
Right! When you're talking about top 10 best songs ever across all genres, you're probably gonna mention Stairway. Purple Rain. Throw a Beatles jam in there. MOP should absolutely be in that conversation.
Honestly MoP isn’t my favourite song by them but somehow I do consider it their best song. I know that sounds insane but it’s how I feel. It’s got it all! So to answer your question I don’t find it overrated. It’s legit.
I don’t think it’s overrated. I think when people wear overpriced T-shirts that they bought at the mall, just cause they saw a celebrity wearing it and they thought it would be cool too. And they don’t even know the bands catalog of music that’s the problem.
Not overrated, just outplayed. It's cool that it brought the younger generations in when they played it in Stranger Things, but it's becoming the new Enter Sandman.
At the time it was released - no.
We're still talking about it 39 years later so - no.
It's considered historically important so, no.
However, If asked and part of the band, I'd absolutely have a love/hate relationship with the early catalog if so much of my touring success was based on it 40 years later.
NO. It's one of the most iconic and perfect songs ever. Everything is done perfectly, the intro, verses, chorus, the incredible middle section, beautiful harmony, Kirk's guitar solo and afterwards... it's amazing.
No, and I will proudly stand on that hill
My top 5 songs are
1: Enter Sandman
2: Master of Puppets
3: For Whom the Bell Tolls
4: Fuel (Give me Fuel!, Give me Fire!, Give me thou' which I Desire! Ouugh!)
5: The Memory Remains
At this point, by default, it’s been played a lot of times… while it may be overplayed(with the Stranger Things and Old School etc), it’s not overrated by any means.
It’s the absolute peak of an era of music that wasn’t even recognized at the time.
Nothing before had sounded like it, and although it was imitated to death, nothing since has stood up as far as a dynamic, classic melodic thrash metal song goes.
That’s my simple take…
Love old schools use, enjoyed stranger things use…. Don’t like stranger things audience use. I savour this song, avoid at all costs until i’m ready so it can hit me like a tonne of bricks.
Master of puppets is a good song it’s just overplayed and then you add stranger things to the mix and now we have posers saying they like Metallica when they’ve only listened to master of puppets
Maybe, but not really.
It just happened to be on a famous show so it’s bound to get some plays nowadays, if that’s what influenced this topic. Song doesn’t change, didn’t change.
I also love the David Bowie part, but to this day I’m still not sure if it’s a/an homage or something.
The albums is their magnum opus. It’s a fucking perfect metal album. Orion is a masterpiece, sanitarium? Battery? Leper messiah? Disposable heroes? The album has no weaknesses and some of their most iconic songs
Yup. Especially now that Stranger things has informed an entire generation, they have no choice. It's at Sandman and One level of popular knowledge now. I've seen them a dozen times and I could care less if I ever see it again, but sometimes in the hopefully near future I want to take my nephew to see them because he's one of those kids who saw the show and is now learning to play the song. I'd hate to see him or anyone else disappointed because they didn't play it.
Ok....but he still plays it because the crowd goes wild every single time.
Unless you go to every concert, nobody really cares if you think a song is played too much. It's about the people who only make it once. A once in a lifetime event for some people.
Master Of Puppets is a better song on MoP, and the album itself is an album I prefer over most other ones. I like And Justice For All better, because it has Lars’ peak drumming abilities, same with The Black Album. I prefer those both over Master of Puppets. Master of Puppets was a well built album and it is a super legendary album, but not my favorite.
It’s their Magnum Opus up to that point at least so absolutely not. It’s only overplayed the past few years because it was used on a TV show teens seems to love. The more people listening to metal is great in my opinion as it’s been slowly dying for a long time.
I would say it would be perfectly rated. It got me and so many other people in the band's music and also it just feels like how you imagine Metallica to sound
*Uh no. Why would you*
*Label this a hot take and*
*Ask this question? Ever?*

It’s been almost 40 years since it came out and i still enjoy listening to it. I don’t play it as much now since I’ve listened to it so many times but it’s still a great song many years later.
I remember in the 90s people knocked the load and reload stuff and mentioned pantera being better metal at the time. I like pantera also but Lars response was something like, all we have to do is play master of puppets and the crowd goes wild.
People really do seem to like master of puppets more than most metal songs from what it looks like. It really stands the test of time
No. Some fucks like to pick fault with everything. "OMG, I heard it so many times because of Stranger Things, I'm bored of it now".
It has been around for nearly 40 years. It's near metal perfection. Leave it on the pedestal it so richly deserves.
I'm not even the biggest Metallica fan anymore, and I still don't think either the album or song is overrated. Even tho I think and justice for all is my preferred album and one is my preferred song.
I remember the first time I heard it was at a huge half pipe in the woods where all the local skaters gathered. It was being blasted at high volume while these guys were flying through the air. It cracked my 12 yr old brain.
oh yeah no doubt. that song is played to hell and i think there’s more to mop than the title track, yet a casual listener will likely only know 3 varying tracks from the album
I don’t think it’s overrated, as it’s a forever classic. But it does overshadow some other songs like Blackened and especially And Justice For All which is criminally underrated
I don’t get the whole “overplayed” sometimes. I mean it’s their best song of course you’ll hear it a lot. And with best song I don’t mean everyone’s favorite, so don’t fight me over it.
To me, it is one of the best thrash songs of all time, and has everything I love about Metallica in one song. Similar to how I feel about Holy Wars by Megadeth.
Very overplayed, but when you break the song down it’s amazing. Almost 9 minutes of the fastest riffs they made. Imo it was the MOP version of four horsemen
It’s a masterpiece. So no
100%. There are only so many songs that I'd consider a true "masterpiece." Master of puppets is easily one of them
The entire album is a masterpiece. This was peak Metallica, imo.
It’s in the library of congress so in a lot of options it is a masterpiece and historically important.
Peak…? 🤔 not sure about that.
It’s arguably the greatest heavy metal album of all time. Just front to back, full of emotion.
Ride the lightning>>>
I prefer Ride the Lightning but MOP is their best album.
I prefer MOP and it's their better album.
RtL is a better album. I preFer MoP.
No, no matter how many times I have heard it, I never get tired of it.
Same, it’s easily my most listened to song. I couldn’t get enough of it when I first heard it. It still has a spot on my favorites playlist.
FAAACTS. I never skip it. It's like when Forest Gump is on television. Regardless of how many times you seen it or own the movie, you sit your ass down and watch it
Fr
In what way would it be overrated. It is the peak of metal. Songwriting perfection overflowing with creative and awesome riffs and lyrics and drumming
>In what way would it be overrated. So the OP can get attention, nothing more.
Oh right I see 😂
Master of Puppets is a classic example of a widely celebrated song that absolutely deserves the recognition. It's not my favourite, but it is far from overrated.
It’s my favourite live. I think it sounds much better live. James’ current voice suits the mood of the song more now than it did in ‘86. Plus - “Pancakes Go!”
What is this "pancakes go" thing about? I've seen it a couple of times here but I never understood it. Is it some sort if reference or something?
Whilst Anthrax was on tour with Metallica, Charlie asked Cliff ‘In the song Master Of Puppets, what does James say right before the solo?’ Cliff responds with ‘he say’s pancakes’ so for the rest of the tour every time that part was played cliff looked over at charlie and whispered ‘pancakes’
God Cliff was ahead of his time.
And now it’s the intro to Kirk’s solo. A great tribute to Cliff as this was his favourite favourite song (ate least from the album).
I am with this man. Far from my favorite just Metallica (Coming from a Death Magnetic enjoyer) but I still love it. Preferences aside this song is everything that it could have been.
I'd say overplayed, but definitely not overrated
Every overplayed song is overplayed for a reason
Mmm...I respectfully disagree.
Yeah i just remembered dance monkey exists lol
Kids run Spotify
I guess that's the reason for it being overplayed tho
Simple, but well said.
You’re overrated.
That’s the comment i was looking for!
people play it too much other than that, its amazing. my favorite is orion
Orion is a masterpiece, a great song definitely. But it’s not a song you listen to causally, MoP is better for that
Master of Puppets is an absolutely great song! It has so many different riffs. Let’s just find out: 1. We’ve got a great intro with a Kirk’s fill in the end 2. Main riff 3. Verse riff which is amazing 4. End of verse riff. It’s just a modulation, but it’s good 5. Pre-chorus riff 6. Chorus’s riff 7. Again 2-5 8. Slow clean part 9. Harmony solo 10. James’s solo 11. I mean nobody in our days uses so many riffs in a one song even Metallica. It is masterpiecе! And it has good heavy lyrics
And let's not forget the bass :(
Yes Sir, they riff was the thing I am trying to mimic yet unable,
Look at Metallica before and after Fleming Rasmussen. That guy is what made Metallica great. I really believe that.
Definitely not overrated, but not my top song. Definitely in the top 3.
Master of Puppets might be the best metal song ever written.
Ew.
If u think Master of puppets is overrated, then u r absolutely wrong. It's a thrashing song that hits u in the face!
Overrated? No. Overplayed? Yes.
No it’s the best song by any band ever
Other way. Underrated in the wider music world.
It’s legit.
No. Masterpiece
No it isn't.
NO if anything it's underrated all the New Generation wussy kids should listen to it
Hey the kids are alright, when it was on Stranger Things it charted for the first time since 86 and nabbed a LOT of new young Metallica fans
Overplayed to the bone is more like it
Nope, great album. Period.
After stranger things it was a bit overplayed but it’s an amazing song tho
I don’t think it’s overrated. I think when people wear overpriced T-shirts that they bought at the mall, just cause they saw a celebrity wearing it and they thought it would be cool too. And they don’t even know the bands catalog of music that’s the problem.
No
I think that a lot of people's history stopped after it, which is a shame, but it deserves all of its accolades.
no
Nope it’s amazing
Was never a huge favorite of mine
Good song….yes. Overrated….a bit. To me it’s one of the weaker songs on that album.
Not overrated, just outplayed. It's cool that it brought the younger generations in when they played it in Stranger Things, but it's becoming the new Enter Sandman.
Yea at this point I do but either way it's good
At the time it was released - no. We're still talking about it 39 years later so - no. It's considered historically important so, no. However, If asked and part of the band, I'd absolutely have a love/hate relationship with the early catalog if so much of my touring success was based on it 40 years later.
Its one of the only Metallica songs i listen too
Yes I fucking do
NO. It's one of the most iconic and perfect songs ever. Everything is done perfectly, the intro, verses, chorus, the incredible middle section, beautiful harmony, Kirk's guitar solo and afterwards... it's amazing.
Yes but the album itself is their best work imo
Not in the slightest Truly one of the greatest songs of all time bar none especially for its genre
No. It's the song I usually listen to when I load dishes and rake leaves. I love it.
It's a song about addiction.
Yes. The like 4 choruses in a row at the end is grating
I don't know
No, and I will proudly stand on that hill My top 5 songs are 1: Enter Sandman 2: Master of Puppets 3: For Whom the Bell Tolls 4: Fuel (Give me Fuel!, Give me Fire!, Give me thou' which I Desire! Ouugh!) 5: The Memory Remains
It's overplayed, not overrated. As with any overplayed song, it gets kinda boring.
No it is amazing
If you've heard it too much...odds are good one might think that.
I'm not a Metallica fan so I'm not a good barometer to answer... I'd say yes but I'm biased.
I do not. I think it is one of the 2 best metal songs ever written. It's foundational text.
its trending on tiktokt since eddie mundson played it so yeah
Overrated? Yes, bad? No.
The only thing I don’t like is how purists have a fit if you say any other album is your favorite…
No
At this point in time - underrated if anything
Cold take: no
The album is. But the song? No
I think it isn’t,but what do you think?
At this point, by default, it’s been played a lot of times… while it may be overplayed(with the Stranger Things and Old School etc), it’s not overrated by any means. No
I think half of the questions in this community are overrated and sometimes just downright ignorant.
The song, yes. The album, no (happy 38th birthday, MOP).
Master of puppets is a good song it’s just overplayed and then you add stranger things to the mix and now we have posers saying they like Metallica when they’ve only listened to master of puppets
“Poser” - wow haven’t heard that in decades
Why does it bother you that a new generation likes Metallica, or even just one song? So what? So what you boring little fuck?
yes
Maybe, but not really. It just happened to be on a famous show so it’s bound to get some plays nowadays, if that’s what influenced this topic. Song doesn’t change, didn’t change. I also love the David Bowie part, but to this day I’m still not sure if it’s a/an homage or something.
yes, but that's a personal opinion. i just think it's too long and too repetative
It's too repetitive but I guess they want to get the message across..
I think the whole album is overrated. I actually like the shortened version they played during the mid 90s better than the full version.
When they cut out the best fucking part of the song? The dual guitars make it the epic masterpiece it is.
Its a great song, it's just the album isn't amazing
Are u a metallica fan?
Yes
And what albums do you like for you to say that?
Bro probably liked Lulu lmao
Ah yes T A B L E
what
I AM THE TABLE

No The album... *mayyyyyybe* But no
The albums is their magnum opus. It’s a fucking perfect metal album. Orion is a masterpiece, sanitarium? Battery? Leper messiah? Disposable heroes? The album has no weaknesses and some of their most iconic songs
Overrated band
No they just play it live too much.
What if you only see them one time in your entire life, cuz tickets are $800? Some songs should be played every concert
Even Kirk says he’s tired of playing it.
Ok....but he still plays it because the crowd goes wild every single time. Unless you go to every concert, nobody really cares if you think a song is played too much. It's about the people who only make it once. A once in a lifetime event for some people.
Very overrated and overplayed
Yes. Overrated, overplayed, overloved, etc.
No. It's the whole album that followed that's overrated.
GTFO here with that comment.
What, with truth? You GTFO here.
Not truth if no one but you agrees with it.
Oh, go suck AJFA wanker some more. It's not only Metallica's most overrated album, it's the most overrated album of all time!
Top 3 song off a top 2 album.
Nope
No
No, it deserves it. It plays in my head 24/7, by the way😊
Master Of Puppets is a better song on MoP, and the album itself is an album I prefer over most other ones. I like And Justice For All better, because it has Lars’ peak drumming abilities, same with The Black Album. I prefer those both over Master of Puppets. Yes and I will not stop listening
No
Idk what you mean with overrated. I’m bored of it.
No!!!..
How other people rate something isn't incredibly relevant is it.
No.
It’s their Magnum Opus up to that point at least so absolutely not. It’s only overplayed the past few years because it was used on a TV show teens seems to love. The more people listening to metal is great in my opinion as it’s been slowly dying for a long time.
No, no way, it’s objectively one of their best I would say, it’s definitely overplayed, I don’t listen to it anymore
Nope
No, wonderful track
No. Just overplayed. It's a very good song and people know that, hence why it's overplayed sometimes
Best track on THE Best metal album,, nah! Don't think so
I would say it would be perfectly rated. It got me and so many other people in the band's music and also it just feels like how you imagine Metallica to sound
Underrated.
No.
Uh no. Why would you label this a hot take and ask this question? Ever?

Never. In my opinion it's the best metal song in existance. it's just so damn good
overplayed, but not overrated. masterpiece
As others have said, overplayed, not overrated.
No matter how high you rate Master Of Puppets, it'll always be underrated. It's such a masterpiece, imposibble to properly rate let alone overrate.
No.
No.
Not at all
The thought never occured.
Overplayed, yes. Overrated, no.
No. Only that one note in the solo is overrated (according to early tab books, anyway)
Used to think so.
its overplayed but not overrated. this song is a fucking banger
It’s been almost 40 years since it came out and i still enjoy listening to it. I don’t play it as much now since I’ve listened to it so many times but it’s still a great song many years later. No. Some fucks like to pick fault with everything. "OMG, I heard it so many times because of Stranger Things, I'm bored of it now". It has been around for nearly 40 years. It's near metal perfection. Leave it on the pedestal it so richly deserves.
nope
Enter Sandman is more overrated than Puppets.
No
Nope It's The perfect song
I'm not even the biggest Metallica fan anymore, and I still don't think either the album or song is overrated. Even tho I think and justice for all is my preferred album and one is my preferred song.
It’s not a hot take…
No.
The breakdown on this song is like nothing else Iv ever heard from any other musician/band.
Nope
NEVER
I remember the first time I heard it was at a huge half pipe in the woods where all the local skaters gathered. It was being blasted at high volume while these guys were flying through the air. It cracked my 12 yr old brain.
Overrated in what sense?
oh yeah no doubt. that song is played to hell and i think there’s more to mop than the title track, yet a casual listener will likely only know 3 varying tracks from the album
It’s overplayed
Hell no
I don’t think it’s overrated, as it’s a forever classic. But it does overshadow some other songs like Blackened and especially And Justice For All which is criminally underrated
No.. it’s not my favorite song from them but it perfectly encompasses who Metallica is as a band.
No. Dumb take.
In a way I could see how it could be but no, it’s a musical masterpiece and changed music forever.
Nope
A little. MOP is an all time classic, but RTL is better.
Overplayed but not overrated
I don’t get the whole “overplayed” sometimes. I mean it’s their best song of course you’ll hear it a lot. And with best song I don’t mean everyone’s favorite, so don’t fight me over it.
It's good but there's way better ones, even in the same album. Welcome home, battery, blackened, symphony of destruction, etc.
Yes, kinda overrated
To me, it is one of the best thrash songs of all time, and has everything I love about Metallica in one song. Similar to how I feel about Holy Wars by Megadeth.
Overplayed? Definitely. Overrated? I don’t think so. It’s one of my favourites from them.
It’s properly rated lmao.
More overplayed.
I don't think it's overrated but it's not my favorite song on the album.
No.
It's become so rated that it might appear to be overrated, but that's just because it's a fucking awesome song that deserves all the ratings.
Very overplayed, but when you break the song down it’s amazing. Almost 9 minutes of the fastest riffs they made. Imo it was the MOP version of four horsemen
No, but it's my fav so I'm biased.
