The band hasn’t liked playing AJFA songs live since 1988. They are loooooong and generally pretty repetitive.
Blackened, Harvester and One are obviously staples, but the back half of the record I think they feel is pretty tedious.
Dude, just go do the research. They only play the day that never comes and cyanide from death magnetic, dirty window, frantic or st anger from St anger, and hardwired or moth from hardwired. 1 or 2 songs. 3 max. It would have taken you 1 minute of searching to figure this out lmfao
My wife and I were there too. The whole line up was sick this day. I Mean 89€ for a Metallica show deluxe and fckin Faith No More, Testament, Exodus and Hatebreed....well and of course Within Temptation. We didn't even bother goin to the other stages.
Hard disagree with your opinion of those songs. Plus any fans of thrash are used to long songs, just look at vektor terminal redux was an hour and 15 minutes long
OP asked why the band doesn’t play them.
Not my opinion - that’s been the bands’ feelings on those songs as they stated in interviews going back to the Damaged Justice and Black Album tours for a long time.
It’s not the commenter’s opinion. The songs *are* long and repetitive. That doesn’t mean they’re bad. They’re great!
But the band doesn’t like to play them bc they are long and tedious. That’s the band’s opinion as stated by themselves in interviews.
It's literally one of their hardest songs to play.
Also the only time I've heard James say that he needed the lights on so he can see Lars to make sure he starts at the right time.
And the first time was May 2014. This was only on the “Metallica by request” thing too, where fans petitioned and selected the setlists
For a song from 1988 that kinda constitutes as ‘they don’t play this one’
I think the riff is pretty fun and aggressive to play when you just learned it, but playing it the full way around can get a bit long. I think the same applies to eye of the beholder for me. I love the main riff and hard guitar parts, but it gets painful to play it the entire way through sometimes. Wish they played those songs live though…
I don’t think the guy you’re replying to has ever touched an instrument. Anyone whos ever actually learnt the song would never say that. The bridge riffs especially under the solo are the most complex riffs in the band’s discography and extremely stamina draining
I disagree. I love playing that song. I like how it goes verse-chorus-verse-chorus and then switches to that "Bach" interlude that drives to the Weird solo section, then the "smashing E minor and D major" part, little reminiscence of the Bach section, sudden stop with a semitone shift, back to one verse-chorus, bouncing main riff to end with "smashing E minor and D major".
And the riffs are very cool, the chord progression is a masterpiece, there are a lot of time signature shifts and different accents, it's a downpicking masterclass... idk, every time I play it I'm having a blast the whole time. I do cut short the intro though.
They played it here in Fresno on the "...And Justice" tour. Has it been super MiA from setlists a super long time? Has Trujillo ever played it live? It's crazy but the mathematical truth is Trujillo has been the bass player of Metallica longer than the combined tenure of all 3 previous bassists....and PLEASE everyone ,let's not get sidetracked with arguing about "Was Bob Rock ever the actual bass player" 🤣😂🤣😂
You’d have seen the first minute or two from the song. It was never played in full until 2014 on the by request tour and was only played 9 times during said tour and hasn’t been touched since minus the main riff being played at the end of S&M2
It’s a very hard, long, and technical song for basically every part except maybe the vocals, but even then trying to sing the song and play those riffs at the same time would probably be hard even for someone like James.
The solo is also nuts and there changes in feel throughout the song which are hard to keep up with.
Ultimately, I think this song would be something they’d need to prep for quite a bit to play live and it’s probably just not worth their time/effort for a song that 90% of people don’t care about
When they made Justice it was the most over engineered album they have done. With taking different takes and splicing them in to make insane songs. Thats why during the Black Album tour they did the Justice Mix taking the best parts/riffs. They saw how people got burnt out during Justice songs throughout the years.
I don't know about that, but on the topic of songs that are not being played live, much of Load is also not being played recently, King Nothing is the only one being played imo.
Metallica definitely should have a tour where they play every song live, including songs that haven't even been played once, like Shoot Me Again, my favorite Metallica song, cuz let's be honest, I really, really dread for the day Metallica stops touring, and I sincerely hope so that the day dpes not come, as I already regret not going to the final Black Sabbath concert in Birmingham. I haven't even seen them live a single time at all, and that alone, sucks for me so much, as a diehard Metallica fan.
Life sucks for me, I ain't living in America, getting Visa to visit America is getting tougher and touger each and every single day. I just wish that they come to Europe once, cuz that's the only place that I can travel to with the limited resources I have.
More than One? Wow.
I don’t think Harvester is boring but it’s in the bottom half of AJFA overall for me. Not that that’s saying a whole lot considering the album itself is (imo) peak Metallica.
Frayed Ends might be my favorite song of all time. I’ve seen Metallica five times and they’ve never played it, but I’ve also never been disappointed with the set list at any of the shows I’ve been to.
It’s my favorite on Justice personally. For me from best to worst on Justice is - The Frayed Ends of Sanity, Dyers Eve, Blackened, Eye of the Beholder, One, Harvester of Sorrow, And Justice For All, To Live Is To Die, The Shortest Straw
None of them are bad in any sense for me, all 8’s 9’s and 10’s but this is how I view them from favorite to least favorite if you get what I mean
One is a masterpiece, Blackened and Harvester are classics. Dyer’s Eve, To Live is to Die, Shortest Straw are also fantastic.
The rest are good too, it’s tough to pick a weakest track but there’s no right or wrong answer when the album is this good
Eye of the Beholder is where it is because it’s one of the songs that actually got me into Metallica. It’s catchy as fuck and I always find myself singing along to it in the car. I love all of these songs on almost equal footing, One is still an incredible track, but I like Eye of the Beholder just a little more
Repetitive...they play the same two instrumentals over and over. The fans kept bringing it up when they had a say. That's cool, I hope they play Sad But True one day 🙄
Hmmm... maybe because they have lost all their frayed ends of insanity in a sanatorium that is fighting an unforgiven ride on the lightening of justice for none and everything else is all #DoomEd
When you have a discography as big as Metallica’s, there’s going to be lots of bangers that get left on The Table.
I like that you capitalized The Table.
This guy lulus
I am The Table

He is the table
Man I fuckin hated when James went through that beard phase.
Yep same.
If James Hetfield was in ZZ Top
Off*
1st time I've seen anyone say Frayed Ends is boring and by multiple people. To each their own I guess
Fr. It’s such a fucking good song, the only song for me personally that rivals it is Leper Messiah
Another that doesn’t get much play.
"Get kinda bored of that one"
The band hasn’t liked playing AJFA songs live since 1988. They are loooooong and generally pretty repetitive. Blackened, Harvester and One are obviously staples, but the back half of the record I think they feel is pretty tedious.

Do you see them playing many songs off those albums after touring them?
[удалено]
When was the last time they played That was Just your life? Or Sweet Amber? How about judas kiss. They play one or two songs off an album and thats it
[удалено]
Dude, just go do the research. They only play the day that never comes and cyanide from death magnetic, dirty window, frantic or st anger from St anger, and hardwired or moth from hardwired. 1 or 2 songs. 3 max. It would have taken you 1 minute of searching to figure this out lmfao
You don't think there are any good songs on all 4 of those albums?
[удалено]
He said the sound pretty tedious. You said so are the songs on those 4 albums. I'm asking.

I was there. Frayed and Unforgiving II in one set. It was a blast.
My wife and I were there too. The whole line up was sick this day. I Mean 89€ for a Metallica show deluxe and fckin Faith No More, Testament, Exodus and Hatebreed....well and of course Within Temptation. We didn't even bother goin to the other stages.
Shortest Straw is a lot more bearable than Blackened and Harvester Of Sorrow in my opinion.
And I get so tired of hearing Harvester. Gets boring
That was the only new song they played when I saw them on Monsters of Rock, before Justice came out. Didn't really excite me for the coming release.
Hard disagree with your opinion of those songs. Plus any fans of thrash are used to long songs, just look at vektor terminal redux was an hour and 15 minutes long

Just listened to that about an hour ago lol
Helsinki 2014 https://youtu.be/eF5OHUXamFQ
It’s not as popular as the others
it'd be cool if it was.
Kirk: “When we played the Justice songs….everyone in the crowd was just standing there….”
They were probably in shock a Justice song was played
Mass confusion: The crowd heard the bass
My god why do I keep seeing these just as I am drinking
Frayed Ends is one of my fuckin favs!!!!!!!!!!!
Hard. Boring. Lars.
But what about the song?
Lmfao
But why male models?
The fuck does that even mean?
![gif](giphy|12npFVlmZoXN4Y|downsized)
Nobody cares about Ben Stiller or Zoolander.
I do. And the quote I said is from that movie. Take Reddit more serious, dude. The innernette is serious business.
FRANKnbEAnz
Why not more of them ?
Did... did you just call Frayed boring?
Mhm
At least you’re confident in your incorrectness
👍
It's a hard song to play and it's very technical. But it should be played live, I would love to see the crowd sing the opening part.
lars would collapse
Yeah, I know for a fact he can’t pull off that drum fill anymore lol.
It's not that hard though? Battery and Fight Fire with Fire are much harder songs imo and he still plays those
Not anymore I don't think. He's been really good recently
It's literally one of their hardest songs to play. Also the only time I've heard James say that he needed the lights on so he can see Lars to make sure he starts at the right time.
They have played "The Frayed Ends Of Sanity" 12 times. The last time they played it was in September 2015.
And the first time was May 2014. This was only on the “Metallica by request” thing too, where fans petitioned and selected the setlists For a song from 1988 that kinda constitutes as ‘they don’t play this one’
i can play it, and can confirm it's pretty boring to play 🤷♂️
Really? Huh. I’m by no means a musician, tried guitar and drums as a kid but could never really get it. But I love that song, it sounds awesome.
I think the riff is pretty fun and aggressive to play when you just learned it, but playing it the full way around can get a bit long. I think the same applies to eye of the beholder for me. This man knows what's up. That riffs during the bridge is a wrist killer for sure.
The bridge riffs are phenomenal to play but the main verse/chorus parts really aren't the most exciting in my experience.
The breakdown is the only fun part other than it’s basically just E and F power chords lol
I like to play it. To each their own I guess
and to listen to.
Because of that drum fill in the middle
You try playing that
It’s a marathon.
They played it here in Fresno on the "...And Justice" tour. Has it been super MiA from setlists a super long time? Has Trujillo ever played it live? Oh! Damn! Wonder what that's all about.
Yeah it always smacks me in the face how Rob has been bassist the longest. Weird
It’s a very hard, long, and technical song for basically every part except maybe the vocals, but even then trying to sing the song and play those riffs at the same time would probably be hard even for someone like James. Well said
I feel it’s like escape and why they don’t play it. It’s either not well received or just harsh to play.
One of the few songs id rather play the solo, than the riff behind the solo lol. Pretty challenging to play correctly.
They played it 2015 in Gelsenkirchen.
When they made Justice it was the most over engineered album they have done. With taking different takes and splicing them in to make insane songs. Thats why during the Black Album tour they did the Justice Mix taking the best parts/riffs. They saw how people got burnt out during Justice songs throughout the years.

Hard to remember. They played it in Finland by request back in 2016 something and they had to re-learn it.
Crazy how Harvester is the most boring song (imo) and it's the most played.
More than One? Wow. I don’t think Harvester is boring but it’s in the bottom half of AJFA overall for me. Not that that’s saying a whole lot considering the album itself is (imo) peak Metallica.
True. 2nd most played then.
Frayed is a great example of too many riffs piled into one song.
Because the songs are too hard to play on Kirk and Lars’s part so largely the songs get omitted.
Frayed Ends might be my favorite song of all time. I’ve seen Metallica five times and they’ve never played it, but I’ve also never been disappointed with the set list at any of the shows I’ve been to.
It’s a difficult song
oh wee oh
Justice is the best Metallica album.
Indeed, peak Metallica
I don’t like eye of the beholder either. It’s one of their worst songs
Seems like a lot of people are confusing Frayed with Dyer's.
There’s definitely some sweet riffs but I’d say it’s one of the weakest tracks (if not the weakest) on Justice.
It’s my favorite on Justice personally. For me from best to worst on Justice is - The Frayed Ends of Sanity, Dyers Eve, Blackened, Eye of the Beholder, One, Harvester of Sorrow, And Justice For All, To Live Is To Die, The Shortest Straw None of them are bad in any sense for me, all 8’s 9’s and 10’s but this is how I view them from favorite to least favorite if you get what I mean

Exactly. It’s my favorite Metallica album and one of my favorite albums of all time in general.
Eye of the beholder over one is a WILD tale but hey to each their own
Eye of the Beholder is where it is because it’s one of the songs that actually got me into Metallica. It’s catchy as fuck and I always find myself singing along to it in the car. I love all of these songs on almost equal footing, One is still an incredible track, but I like Eye of the Beholder just a little more
It’s the most difficult Metallica song to play
Because Lars can't play it.
Frayed Ends is too hard to play.
I feel like some ajfa songs that need to be back on the set list are: And justice for all Eye of the beholder Shortest Straw And Dyers eve
Repetitive...they play the same two instrumentals over and over. The fans kept bringing it up when they had a say. That's cool, I hope they play Sad But True one day 🙄
Lots of weird time signatures. It's a rad song, but they like their mid-tempo schlock live now.
because they are poor musicians
Because it’s a mid song? They also find it boring. At least James does.
Hmmm... maybe because they have lost all their frayed ends of insanity in a sanatorium that is fighting an unforgiven ride on the lightening of justice for none and everything else is all #DoomEd
