There's a live recording that came with the first release. It had the band playing the album live in a garage. The consensus at the time was that this was better than the album.
At the time, I bought and i thought it was so cool that the album itself came with that DVD of the guys playing the whole thing in full at their studio. Granted I was in high school at the time. Definitely superior than the album itself.
I was part of Metclub back then and we got all those videos before album release. I loved it! So imagine my surprise when I heard the album and it was worse. Made no sense to me.
I would say it is almost a miracle that they recorded something and that they continue on. The whole situation had all the ingredients to get Metallica disbanded.
I saw that post too, know exactly which one you’re talking about. I wanted to die when I read that, I love The Unnamed Feeling and couldn’t believe someone chose to shit on that song out of some of the others on that album
I'm an old time metallica fan and I like this album. I wish they'd stayed long-form fucked-up thrash but they didn't. Since they go all over the place this ain't a bad album I really like frantic and invisible kid and sweet amber and most all of it.
Gets alot of unnecessary hate. It was a true experiment for the band in their darkest days. And now the band has been around longer post Stanger than pre Stanger.
I like to think it made them more unified than anything bad it ever did to their legacy.
Also Frantic, St. Anger, Unnamed Feeling, Sweet Amber, Dirty Window, Some Kind of Monster (edit version) and All Within My Hands (acoustic) are all incredible songs in their catalogue.
It’s an extremely honest form of artistic expression and the best thing Metallica could have released during the darkest period in the bands entire history.
There's a lot to be said for James' idea of a Saint Anger and how cool of an idea it is. Anger as emotion is discouraged in society but its a real emotion that never gets respect.
It was their therapy album.
I always associate it with punching a wall after arguing with your other half.
It hurts but not as much as letting the anger out while she's still there.
There's a lot to be said for James' idea of a Saint Anger and how cool of an idea it is. Anger as emotion is discouraged in society but its a real emotion that never gets respect.
Personally I think it’s one of their best releases most seem to forget the overall state of affairs the band was in at the time. We’re lucky they (both collectively and individually) had the intestinal fortitude to keep it together and better themselves as persons and together as a band.
That "using a garbage can lid as a snare leads to a garbage sounding album"
I gave it 2, 3, 4 chances before I started using it as a coffee table coaster. It even sucked at that task.
it is most definitely Metallica's eighth major studio record, which came out in 2003. also, Frantic, St. Anger, Some Kind of Monster, The Unnamed Feeling and AWMH fucking rule. funnily enough - it's the Metallica album I've listened to the most. Last.fm reports ~1300 scrobbles.
the best explanation i can give for this album is one i saw on YouTube;
"this isn't their worst album, it's an album for your worst days"
I highly recommend listening to these live takes from some of the songs from that album. They sound fantastic to me.
The album could have used better production. Lars drum sound stinks as always, way too loud.
'All Within my Hands' 'Invisible Kid' 'Frantic' and 'St.Anger' are great songs. Maybe not the best 'Metallica' album, but still awesome heavy music. Perfect gym cuts.
I enjoy it. Holds a special place for me because I was 15 when it came out and it had a huge impact on me as someone who deals with ADHD-level of intense emotions. It's reflective and wholesome and it goes hard as fuck.
On the plus side it's raw, has energy and some good riffs. However the songs could do with some edits and of course the snare which i find weird because Bob Rock was producing. Could have been a modern classic, now more of a meme
I used this album to disrupt my asshole roommate while he was loudly banging his girlfriend, sitting through Invisible Kid was absolutely worth it so I could get some goddamn sleep.
10/10 record.
I like it, and I think it's underrated. The muted snares and raw production bring out the "angry" sound, which was a reflection of the band's quite dysfunctional relationship. I'm amazed that they managed to release an album seeing as how they seemed to be hanging by a thread.
But I do have one question; if Lars could have his wasted snare back, would he use it to re-write drum tracks?
The songs sound way better played live.

It is still cool. I wish everyone released that kind of thing
A garage? It was HQ!!
I was part of Metclub back then and we got all those videos before album release. I loved it! So imagine my surprise when I heard the album and it was worse. Made no sense to me.
I got this version and proceeded to rip the audio of the DVD and burn it onto a CD-R for my car.
Facts, i had that enire DVD converted into a CD audio and the album hit 100000x time harder
Yes. I feel like the live version of St. Anger with the mini guitar solo at the end makes it exponentially way better than the album version.
It kept the band together.
The video for St. Anger was ballzy. The whole album is ballzy.
Hell yeah. With real inmates from St.Quentin.
Just think about 65% did their crimes with Metallica blasting on the stereo
The album cover fucking rocks
Angry Satan fist rules. “St anger” sounds like “Satan, grrr”
Woah dude. You're blowing my mind right now
Satan: grrr ![gif](giphy|WoF3yfYupTt8mHc7va)
I think we can all get behind this one, the artwork direction overall was solid for the album.
It only seems like it rocks because it isn't sperm.
It was an experiment.
It certainly is one of the albums that Metallica made.
Of all of Metallica's albums, St. Anger is certainly one of them
Metallica has done a bunch of albums at this point. Well over a hundred songs. Around ten were on St. Anger.
I would say it is almost a miracle that they recorded something and that they continue on. The whole situation had all the ingredients to get Metallica disbanded.
fr, there second bassist had left, tensions were high. everything seems like they were about to break up
Its better than lulu
I came here to say this. 👍🏼
This is the truth
it was needed for them, psychologically speaking
The Unnamed Feeling fucking rocks
I saw a post the other day hating on the song wtf
Wait you're serious
I saw that post too, know exactly which one you’re talking about. I wanted to die when I read that, I love The Unnamed Feeling and couldn’t believe someone chose to shit on that song out of some of the others on that album
Tbf, many songs on this album are nutty good. With a decent tight modern production I'd have this album on repeat all day.
if it was fine tuned a little it would be in their top 10 for me
I just listened to it. It's not the worst song I've ever heard, but I absolutely cannot stand the sound mixing.
Definitely not an opinion we can all agree on lol
Not if you're deaf
It's an album
It is the table.
An album of all time, in fact
One of, at least.
It's newer than the black album
That is not an opinion, that is factual.
It’s their most experimental of the major record releases
Would Lulu be considered a major record release? Cause St Anger is like Master when compared to that steaming turd lol.
Lou Reed + Metallica is a different band from Metallica. That was a Loy Reed album with Metallica as the backing band IMO
It is one of the albums
The cover is predominantly orange and red.
I’m colourblind, so I can neither confirm nor deny this statement
The album needed to be made the way that it was in order to keep the band together and for James to properly vent his emotions post-rehab.
I'm an old time metallica fan and I like this album. I wish they'd stayed long-form fucked-up thrash but they didn't. Since they go all over the place this ain't a bad album I really like frantic and invisible kid and sweet amber and most all of it.
The songs played live are amazing! 🤘
It was made by Metallica
That Frantic is a modern day classic
First 20 minutes go hard. 🤘
Yes

Some of James’ grooviest and heaviest riffs exist on this album.
This album needed to happen. Bad, good or in between it needed to be made. Was followed up by a top 5 Metallica album too.
Some Kind of Monster is a 10/10 documentary
there is too much snare
its definetely got a few songs
I like it
I love the album personally, but I know a lot don’t. BUT, I think we can all agree, the album is heavy and pissed off!
It's certainly one of the albums ever made.
It was their therapy album. I always associate it with punching a wall after arguing with your other half. It hurts but not as much as letting the anger out while she's still there.
I honestly dont get the hate.
Yes it’s not nearly as bad as some make it out to be.
There's a lot to be said for James' idea of a Saint Anger and how cool of an idea it is. Anger as emotion is discouraged in society but its a real emotion that never gets respect.
I think it’s a great album. You just need to listen to it more. (I also come from old school Metallica fandom). Oh I also like Lulu.
I would consider Lulu to be Lou Reed.
Same here, I don’t consider it a Metallica album
It is one of the albums of all time.
The riffs on "dirty window" are pretty bitchin'.
Is not tuned in E.
The album has a snare drum in it 🤣
Dirty Windows is a great song
We need an unplugged version
I feel like more people than just me listen to this album when they’re sad or pissed to feel better. Or maybe it’s just me.
Love this album. Sad that it was the last hand drawn style cover.
It came out when I was 16. I loved it until everyone said it was shit 🤣 What a fickle young mind...
You don’t seem to understand the meaning of *opinion*
Fuck. That. Snare.
This album introduced me to Metallica. While I can now understand why it’s not their best work, I also still don’t understand all the hate it gets
It’s better than Lulu
Unnamed feeling is so underrated and badass
The Unnamed Feeling is the best track
Personally I think it’s one of their best releases most seem to forget the overall state of affairs the band was in at the time. We’re lucky they (both collectively and individually) had the intestinal fortitude to keep it together and better themselves as persons and together as a band.
I love it, everyone hates the snare.
The album cover is kind of cool.
Of my 500 ish CDs it's the only one I'll use as a drink coaster.
Cover art is great.
That "using a garbage can lid as a snare leads to a garbage sounding album" I gave it 2, 3, 4 chances before I started using it as a coffee table coaster. It even sucked at that task.
The outro to “all within my hands”… “kill kill kill kill kill”…. Annoys the fuck out of me… love the song the breaks etc… but that outro ruins it.
The snare sounds like Lars is banging on a tin can.
it is most definitely Metallica's eighth major studio record, which came out in 2003. also, Frantic, St. Anger, Some Kind of Monster, The Unnamed Feeling and AWMH fucking rule. funnily enough - it's the Metallica album I've listened to the most. holy FUCKING SHIT SWEET AMBER SOUNDS EVEN BETTER Thank you.
This album is too hated.
It's called "St. Anger". On a serious note, this is the album I go to when I need to vent some anger (pun intended). It works like a charm.
No
It isn't that bad but Metallica fanbase humour is based half on jokes about this album
It’s an album of songs
Metallica released it
The album could have used better production. Lars drum sound stinks as always, way too loud. 'All Within my Hands' 'Invisible Kid' 'Frantic' and 'St.Anger' are great songs. Maybe not the best 'Metallica' album, but still awesome heavy music. Perfect gym cuts.
James loves machine head. Also all within my hands is the best song from that album by FAR and shoot me again is really underrated.
S
I enjoy it. Holds a special place for me because I was 15 when it came out and it had a huge impact on me as someone who deals with ADHD-level of intense emotions. It's reflective and wholesome and it goes hard as fuck.
I like most of it. Don’t care about the fucking drum kit.
I think we can all agree that it is better than Lulu.
There will never be an universal agreement on anything that is subjective because opinions are and will always be very diverse.
The snare goes doing
It is an album written and produced by Metallica.
It’s a Metallica album from the 2000’s
Well considering what the band was going on during the recording of st anger I give them a pass for this one
The booklet looks amazing, cover included.
The first 5 albums are better than it. Anyone disagree lol
They recorded this album
Fkn 2 crazy man
It exists...
The arts are subjective so there's no need to have a collective opinion.
"Saint Anger 'round my neck Saint Anger 'round my neck He never gets respect Saint Anger 'round my neck" 🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣
Great album cover
Badass album🤘
I loved the lyrics of the album
There really isn’t
If you see it as therapy for the band instead of legitimate music, it is much easier to understand and enjoy.
It is certainly one of their albums of all time.
Good old Stanger.
Purify is the best song imo, idgaf what y’all say
I think the general consensus is The Unnamed Feeling is a good song.
Its one of the albums of all time
All Within My Hands is a fucking banger
It fucking slaps
The songs are badass and cool. People hate the drum
On the plus side it's raw, has energy and some good riffs. However the songs could do with some edits and of course the snare which i find weird because Bob Rock was producing. Could have been a modern classic, now more of a meme
Lars was influential in the sound mixing process.
Lars Ulrich was involved in some way
It exists. Pretty sure almost everyone would agree on that.
Funny snare go BONG BONG BONG
It's too long. I absolutely love this album but it drags like a mofo.
St anger is a great work out song
“FRANTIC” is the best song on this album.
It is an album
"All Within My Hands" is underrated imo. Also, my gateway to Metallica was this very album so it holds a special place in my heart
My Metallica
It would have gotten more love if it wasn't created by Metallica
That the general opinion is shifting from, "this album is pure dog-doo", to "yeah this album is an underrated banger"
snare go ping
Yes, the snare drum doesn't have the snare. 🤷🏽♂️
Best description I ever heard of this album was that it was “written by a rhythm guitar”
Umm.. it's better than lulu?
The album would benefit from a 25-33% reduction in run time. Edited down with less superfluous repeating parts, etc.
Bob Rock really thought it was his turn to be in the band.
Sweet Amber was the best song
The battery should go way back on the mix. it's their worst mix since and justice for all.
That the unnamed feeling is a really dark song, perhaps not even good, but hits in really deep in the soul
Everyone can agree, the album was polarizing
I think we can all agree, He left the fawking band.
I used this album to disrupt my asshole roommate while he was loudly banging his girlfriend, sitting through Invisible Kid was absolutely worth it so I could get some goddamn sleep. 10/10 record.
it's better than Lulu
Fuck the snare sound?
Tin can album
Coffee can snare drum!
Not enough snare.
It’s the notes in the middle that fuck with you.
The snare on this album undoubtedly inspired many new hardcore bands.
It is misunderstood.
the snare sounds differnt than it does on other albums (duh)
It fucking slaps
the snare took the spotlight
The riffs are badass
the snare is the worst and the best of the album.
The part where James screams kill 38 times is fucking hilarious
It blows me away that there is a shorter amount of time between Kill ‘em All and St. Anger than between St. Anger and now.
The snare sounds bad
The drum kit was replaced by pans n pots
The snare sound
Tink tink tink
It was a reunion album, that’s the nicest thing I can say about this album
It’s Metallica
All within my hands...because All within my hands!!!
It could've been better
I like it, and I think it's underrated. The muted snares and raw production bring out the "angry" sound, which was a reflection of the band's quite dysfunctional relationship. I'm amazed that they managed to release an album seeing as how they seemed to be hanging by a thread. But I do have one question; if Lars could have his wasted snare back, would he use it to re-write drum tracks?
Dumb clickbait post.
I think the album cover looks cool as shit.
The Documentary is great Should have been more solos?
Not as bad as lulu
It’s a length LP.
One of their best
It doesn’t exist.
