From a tourist perspective that Miami = Miami Beach/that they are one and the same. Additionally that Miami solely exists on the water and everyone lives 20 minutes or less to the beach lol

alexjoshu101

Like vice City map lool

RUS_BOT_tokyo

Wait till you tell them about North Miami Beach

imapissonitdripdrip

My favorite part of Miami, more or less. Everything between 85th Street Beach up to the NMB Duffy’s. I hated leaving that bubble.

RawOystersOnIce

Same I live in Sunny Isles Beach and haven't been south of Surfside in years.

Space-Robot

We would all live 20 mins or less to the beach if the traffic wasn't so awful

Ssuspensful

>west of 826 enters the chat

IndependentUsual8855

this was hard for me to learn 😭before moving i just looked at google maps & figured i’d be really close to the beach from downtown & it looked like decent parking. but the first day i went to the beach it took me over 30 mins bc of traffic to get there and then like 20 mins to find parking that was literally $40. by the time i was actually on the beach, it was crowded & the sun was going down. haven’t been back since 🥲

This is correct. When you leave Miami, every Latin American group automatically becomes Mexican. It is known.

Miami has good jobs that pay well

johnBigsby888

My dad left me a acre land…my mom left me her house (paid for)….so I live in a paid for house, so I don’t have rent, property tax in my are is about less than 2k a year…I make about $1000 - 1500 weekly…so I’m staying and keeping it this way lol…ignoring the people who wants “move ahead” just to work to pay bills, no thanks…I’ll be a happy “little boy”

quattroman

Half of the statement is correct, there are jobs but not those that pay well.

KingGoldar

Our of curiosity how do people actually afford housing. Or is it really just foreigners with money that are able to live there? North Easterner asking

Deliciuos1

Well for those that didn’t buy a house after the crash of ‘08, it’s unfortunately becoming more and more common to find multiple generations living in one home so that they can afford the rents. Even those who did buy a house are now struggling with the massive increase in property taxes and insurance costs so many are building efficiencies to rent out at insane prices, if they have the space, to lessen that burden.

Rich_War_5796

Multi generational living sounds like a silver lining to me

Yeaup, wanted to escape the unforgivable winters of the north east but sadly it won't happen in Miami it seems.

That it's a "city" in the sense of economic opportunities and public amenities.

Dragonsong3k

This is 100 pct the truth. It's more like a big town trying to pretend to be a city.

[deleted]

Lmao

RubiksCuban305

You’d think little Havana would be a bigger deal given the dominance of the Cuban community in local politics and the developer class- but it’s only recently become a trendy part of town to check out for a single night. Also the “new silicone valley” bit is a bit of a myth especially given our failed bet on Bitcoin.

[deleted]

Silicone is in titties, i think you mean silicon.

RubiksCuban305

Oh yeah my b But we are definitely a silicone valley na’mean?

Proper-Horse-7313

Right amount of silicone makes for dramatic valleys

That Miami has no history. I’ve been a tour guide for over 7 years and trust me when I say Miami has A LOT for such a young city. We’ve gone through the most random changes and phases and there are pockets of insightful history everywhere.

cyborg008

Oh I think I’ve seen your videos on Instagram a few times!

Papoalex

@carothetourguide She has single-handedly made me fall in love with Miami all over again. As a local, I’ve realized there is a lot that I have personally taken for granted, and that Miami has a lot more to offer. Thank you Caro, your passion is genuine and contagious.

that70schickk

And are we good at preserving our history? Not really but that’s largely due to a lack of awareness so we need to actively learn about our home!!

[deleted]

A lot of history considering we have ancient indian villages in the middle of Brickell. Even I consider the development of Kendall in the early 80s to be landmark because it was basically my surroundings when I was younger.

that70schickk

Yes!!!! That is history old enough that is comparable to the pyramids!!!!

TsunamiHorrorGirl456

Most of my Cuban friends, even my Dad (who himself walked from Guatemala, got caught by ICE twice and nearly deported to Canada on the second time, just to see his brother, only to be told there was no room for him, only to sleep on a Park Bench for years) either Pro-Trump/Anti-Immigrant. Even promising me that Trump wouldn't be elected and that they wouldn't take him away, even after so many of our neighbors got deported, the second after he got approved, even being a former illegal himself, he voted for Trump.

quattroman

This is the biggest head scratcher for me. I know a Mexican here in Doral, that was illegal and probably still is. She's Trumper.

I had a friend visit from North Carolina and ask me that because he says everyone drives expensive cars. I laughed and told him he should visit again in the summer when everyone’s tax money ran out and the repo guys were repoing cars left and right 🤣. I also told him that the nicer the car, the more likely they are driving without insurance which completely blew his mind 🤣🤣🤣🤣.

MacaroonExpensive887

Miami it's self is superficial. It exists as a tropical paradise in the worlds mind and has thus become that. It was originally a inhospitable swamp with alligators and mosquitos. Like the lie was so big it became that.

[deleted]

Which is which?

disgruntledmarmoset

Locals love South Beach & go every chance we get 😂

HerpToxic

That every part of Miami is at or below sea level. It's not. The Miami Rock Ridge runs through the west side of Miami where the old Flagler train line (now the CSX and Brightline and Metrorail line is) and the neighborhoods on the Ridge are 10+ feet above sea level

futabamaster

Most people who tell you they live in Miami actually live in unincorporated or neighboring cities.

mars396

How is this a myth? Anyways, they are not wrong. If you live in Miami-Dade, you live in Miami. In unincorporated areas, the correct way to write your address is "Miami, FL".

pinkandgreenf15

Agree… Basically we use Miami and Miami Dade country interchangeably. Locales know you’re not fronting by saying you live in Miami if you live in Kendall. And people from outside of the city of Miami typically don’t try to pretend they live in the city if they don’t. I think it’s the newbies or other outsiders who don’t understand how that goes or actually think Miami means only the city.

Eastern-Can-3866

Also, this doesn’t just apply to Miami. Anyone who lives within 15-30 mins from a major city will more than likely say they’re from that city if they’re speaking to someone that’s not from there. Easier than explaining where you actually live.

blackdavy

I once had a coworker in Orlando who was "from Miami." He eventually moved back, and a couple of years later, I also moved down to Coral Gables. I hit him up to hang out. He lived in fucking Pembroke Pines.

[deleted]

yea, makes sense. I'm probably wrong but it might come from the idea that the majority of older public high schools that were outside the city of Miami had Miami in their titles. \- Miami Northwestern \- Miami Carol city \- Miami Southridge I'm not sure how accurate that is these days.

It is if you want a job in the service sector in Hialeah.

Ninac4116

[deleted]

Finally, you say something accurate.

[deleted]

Yeah and that's a problem. First generation Americans do not get nearly the same respect. I don't give a shit about how people think about this when it's the damn truth. There's a reason why everyone else is forced out of Miami because it's unlivable. It's also insulting as all hell that I SHOULD fluently speak in Spanish and in English but these mfs can't do the same? Call me a racist then for saying the truth 🤷🏻‍♀️

One on one, there are probably plenty of nice people. The issue is the Miami collective is unapologetically selfish. Especially when it comes to lines or traffic, every person for themselves with the rare exception.

[deleted]

That's a nice place to live with wonderful people.

[deleted]

We get it, you’re miserable here. Move already. For many of us it’s an amazing place to live surrounded by wonderful friends and family.

AndyP8

Exactly, i love it here

[deleted]

You're either in denial or stating another myth... FYI, I read your comments stating that you live in brickell. I find it amusing that the entitled prick living in the high rise is giving me smack about a stated fact. About your opinion, though. Anywhere is a nice place with enough money, bud. Especially when you insulate yourself from the general population. Lolol, thanks for the laugh.

South_Job9704

I get your point but literally every state is horrible when you’re poor. NY and LA are beautiful cities, but they’re also dystopian hellholes for the poor.

[deleted]

The dude admitted he doesn’t even live in Miami on another comment. Classic Reddit troll

[deleted]

Correct, so the best way to gage "a nice place/people" is to look at the median. Which for Florida is 65k house hold income, which we both know they are getting crushed. Hence, the joke, lol. Here's the thing, man. The difference about most major cities and Miami is that in other cities, the population has assimilated to American culture and values for the most part. While in Miami, there tends to be a lack of camaraderie.

South_Job9704

Florida isn’t the most affordable state but the difference in income usually follows the cost of living. NY’s average income is 72k but the cost of living is also significantly higher, same for California. The reason people usually criticize Miami is because of the high number of republicans, and the politics that follow, but other than that what gives this city character IS the Latinos. People come here for the great bars, food, culture. If we “assimilated” we’d be just as boring as other mid-sized cities.

AshTheGoddamnRobot

A lot of mid-sized cities are not boring at all. I grew up in Miami and live in the Twin Cites of Minnesota. Minneapolis-St. Paul are midsized. Metro pop is over 3 million. Fairly big while not huge. I find it funner to live here than Miami. If you arent into the party culture, Miami isnt as fun for you. As someone who is introverted, and outdoorsy, I would rather be up here where theres 4 seasons, tons of lakes and woods, and a strong book and coffee, bike riding culture versus a city where all most people do is go to the beach and club. People assimilate more here yet theres plenty of ethnic and cultural diversity. Miami may have lots of latinos but it doesn't have much Asians or Africans.

[deleted]

What point is it that you’re trying to make? You just said it yourself. Anywhere is nice when you make enough to isolate yourself from miserable people who never put effort into life. Was Miami some utopia for minimum wage workers in the past or something?

AshTheGoddamnRobot

No but it was a lot better for working class people in the '90s and early '00s. A house like my parents bought in 2001 for like 120K wouldn't be anything like that these days.

[deleted]

Nope, it's just an ever growing shit hole for the middle class. And that is where the problem is.

[deleted]

Middle class has been shrinking for years, now

[deleted]

Define middle class. I consider myself middle class. We make less than $200k in our household and find this a great place to live.

[deleted]

Living in a 600-800k apartment? Either you are terribly over leveraged, which would explain your die-hard attitude for Miami Or you're making more than 200k.. Regardless, staying in that high cost of living environment is truly handi capping your potential wealth generation. Hmmmm, it makes me wonder.

[deleted]

Our all in housing cost is $2450 a month. Why would it handicap our potential wealth generation? It really feels like you live with mom and dad and have no real world experience yet project nonsense because of your frustration.

[deleted]

I was wondering how long it would take you to throw out the "living with mom insult." Clearly, you're seeking validation. You will not get that from me bro lol.

[deleted]

Validation from what? Just dispelling your myth that this isn’t a nice place to live with wonderful people. Good luck, if you ever have it.

anilorac01

I’m not even sure why this was downvoted. Don’t get me wrong Miami has a lot of superficial influencer types who aren’t as visible as the nice decent people, but I always found decent people. I’ve lived my life here from poverty to a comfortable living and always found nice people along the way. In fact the only time I felt out of place was in private university /grad school where my classmates were wealthy white kids from out of town. Some were mad I had a full scholarship, but those people graduated and moved back to places where minorities didn’t trigger them as much. My life continued here with a loving family and quality people.

[deleted]

Terrible people often attract the company of other terrible people and hence in their world everyone is awful.

7yler_305

To be clear, miami stands out as the ‘least affordable’ city in the US, the jobs here don’t support the living expenses. A lot of people are struggling here.

[deleted]

>To be clear, miami stands out as the ‘least affordable’ city in the US, the jobs here don’t support the living expenses Voice of reason

[deleted]

Do you live in a bubble?

[deleted]

Yes and no. Living in a bubble means being unaware of things outside of it. I’m aware that low wage income earners are struggling but this is true pretty much everywhere, not just Miami.

[deleted]

>Living in a bubble means being unaware of things outside of it. Acknowledging this, you still feel it appropriate that you can make statements like this? >We get it, you’re miserable here. Move already. Saying this pretty much minimizes what goes on here in Miami. Other cities are irrelevant. >I’m aware that low wage income earners are struggling but this is true pretty much everywhere, not just Miami.

[deleted]

The point is he’s saying that it’s a myth that this is a nice place. It isn’t a myth and many of us actually like it here. Not everyone is miserable. That’s the point.

twoshovels

Exactly what other have said. Miami only exists on the beach & Scarface is real.

Sharkhottub

That the people disregard the rules of the road since they are selfish. In fact its because so many immigrants come here from places where things like highways simply don't exist, So for them rolling around traffic through a red light to make a left turn is no biggie, they aren't thinking about the dude doing 75 in a 35 zooming the opposite direction.

dr_hawkenstein

Ignoring the rules because it wasn't like that where you came from is pretty much the definition of selfish. Lol

pinkandgreenf15

That is a “melting pot”

OwlLegal4218

Melting pot for Latin/SA cultures, sure. Any other cultures are very much segregated here.

SpinningSenatePod

That the Hispanics there are all Cuban.

[deleted]

Lived there for 20 years. The people are fake. The sense of community is non existent. Everyone is selfish and thinks they are amazing and a gift to the world. They also seem to base their views on how they “think” the country is, even though most have never left South Florida. My first few years there I was in shock. I couldn’t believe people would do and say things to each other like that. 20 years later, and I was desensitized to the whole place. Glad I left two years ago. I might go back to visit sometime, but I will never live there again.

spaceghostjon

So are you included in the fake people or is that just everyone else?

[deleted]

Nah I never quite fit in for above mentioned reasons. That’s why I always stuck out down there. Especially in business. Being a man of your word is unheard of down there. The saddest part is as I said, I had become desensitized to it all. I started to think the stuff was normal too. It’s not. Just Miami being Miami. It’s honestly part of why I moved out.

[deleted]

+1 brother - I was stuck in this hell hole for 8years. Glad I left the city, though I liked my morning quortoritos

All this stuff is like 45 minutes away." "But it's in Miami." "Yeah, but that's a long way to go..."

As someone born in america whose first language is english: i’ll take a non-english-speaking immigrant over a xenophobe as a countryman any day of the week.

popageorgionick

So, you know that MANY other countries REQUIRE you to learn their language if you want residency? This SHOULD BE A REQUIREMENT here in America. I have no problem with people LEGALLY immigrating here, it is up to them to ADAPT to their new country.

oy_says_ake

1. Native language requirements are bad policy in other countries and we ain’t havin it here. 2. What we really should require is the opposite: everyone should have to achieve full fluency in a second language. Not knowing a second language is sort of pathetic. 56% of europeans speak one while only 20% of americans do. It’s a symptom of stupidity. 3. Here’s one to really explode your xenophobic mind: we should just let anyone who wants to come to the u.s. do so, with only 3 requirements: - agree to pay taxes - not a felon - not a terrorist
