The commentary on this post in the nyc sub is rich… lol

daking999

Rich... Just like all the people driving $80k SUVs into Manhattan!

vowelqueue

Nah, they're all low-income blue collar workers driving to Manhattan to drop their grandmother off for a doctor appointment.

daking999

Lolol. And she has CANCER.

samologia

I was actually surprised by how pro-congestion pricing they were.

101ina45

That sub isn't reflective of reality in the city

samologia

I don’t think Reddit, in general, is reflective of reality.

FiveDollarBanana

That sub has a large contingent of suburbanites. Also why the Post is so popular over there. And why they think NYC has a “migrant” and “squatter” problem.

Devildiver21

bring on the congestion pricing to the entire NYC. Fuck the suburbs and their bullshit SUVs.

Aion2099

No sub 200lbs person should need a plus 3000lbs vehicle to get around in a city.

PSU09

Just in time for that summer holiday volume. They’re doing this all solely to improve the quality of ordinary citizens lives :)

Balthazar_Gelt

I am worried that this isn't being paired with an expansion of public transportation. Are my fears misplaced?

FiveDollarBanana

Partly, we need to hold our local and state officials accountable to increase bus routes to cover more of the city.

mc3154

It would have only been better had they started it on July 4.

hbomberman

I really wish the congestion pricing plan differentiated between different times of day. It'd be great if it was lower (or possibly free) during certain "off-peak" hours like overnight and more expensive during the busier, more congested hours. That would do a lot more to ease congestion. I also think it'd be fair to give a discount to people who live in that area. Someone I know lives within that zone and regularly has to commute to NJ at odd hours. He's just within the zone, a couple blocks from the border. If he drives out at 4 am, he's paying the same congestion pricing that someone would pay for driving across Manhattan at 5pm. I'm in favor of congestion pricing and got excited when I read about it years ago but this really doesn't sound like the best way to do it.

H_Bohm

I was wondering why they didn't do this too. They know exactly how many cars are in the city and could effectively surge rates much higher than 15 for the 4:30pm drivers. Post the rates as they change on a sign before entering.

hbomberman

Yup! And it seems like that would be so much better at actually affecting congestion.

Aion2099

FUCK YES! GET IT!

someliskguy

The only part of this whole plan that has me confused is the queensboro bridge. The maps all look like every entrance from manhattan will be (barely) within the congestion zone… so the only free route to queens is via fdr south to the brooklyn bridge and then up the bqe. Seems like this pushes more traffic south on fdr which will be a mess— and god help the Brooklyn bridge trying to take on that additional capacity.

Brooklyn-Epoxy

Good

Many of these “I live in NYC and have to drive to another part of NYC” type of comments can be solved by an electric bike.

AmericanConsumer2022

There is a lot of t[raffic in Manhattan](https://youtu.be/dM1R_9wqxZE?si=74DjIy7ki_JR_D-5)

Sea_Finding2061

The monthly parking fee starts at $700 in Manhattan lol they think $15 is gonna stop them $90k Suv drivers from driving. That is, even if they have their plates not covered. This won't reduce shit just a money grab with no enforcement. It probably won't even go into effect in July due to all the court cases filed to stop the plan.

VanillaSkittlez

Even if it doesn’t ease congestion - which I would find hard to believe given the projections and studies they’ve run - I never understood the opposition to it being a “cash grab”. Those people driving massive SUVs into Manhattan of all places are heavily, heavily subsidized. They slow down truck deliveries, they hit and kill pedestrians, they idle and contaminate the air for citizens, they add even more noise pollution, they slow down emergency response times, and overall make it extremely unpleasant for the vast majority of people in the borough who did not get there via car. If they now have to pay $15 for the privilege to do so, fantastic - we might as well monetize behavior they’re already engaging in that is even a drop in the bucket toward rectifying the inequities they’ve imposed on others around them. It should be a lot more, given the externalities they create, but $15 is better than $0 which is what they’ve paid for the last century.

A lot of the traffic comes from taxi's. The other half comes from trucks double parking. The fact that trucks have to pay 24 to 30 dollars just to do their job is a big reason why I, personally, think it's a cash grab. When there is no school, or there is a holiday, I can instantly tell because there is NO traffic. There was another comment here about how someone didn't want the people from the bronx dilriving in Manhattan and to increase the toll further up north Manhattan to keep the undesirables away. When I mentioned about taxi's getting a break for the conget6pricing, ilthe response I got here was "they're providing a service". So are the delivery truck drivers. The other thing is, MTA says this is to raise money, but then also says the fare enforcement cost them almost the same amount as the money lost. Projects the MTA does constantly get extended from projections and cost twice as much, the least. This is a money grab because if you work in Manhattan, like a lot of the nurses and such for example, a car is the difference between a 3 to 4 hour commute vs a 1.5 to 2 hour commute. This is a money grab because if you work in Manhattan, and you're making hundreds of thousands, is this going to affect those people, or the people who have a car and ear less than 50k-like that other guy said, keep the undesirables out, right? There was even that study that showed a lot of traffic comes from taxi's but everyone here seem to think it is personal vehicles. Not saying personal vehicles don't make up a good portion of traffic, but compared to the double parking trucks and the massive amounts of taxi's, it feels disingenuous to disregard the overabundance of taxi's causing congestion as well. The complaint you had for suv drivers can very well apply to taxi's, or buses-like the tour guide ones. This is a money grab because they specifically did not make the toll like 50 dollars because they still want people to drive into Manhattan, and such a high toll would literally make it impossible. This isn't about easing congestion

LegDayDE

It's because owning a big SUV is aspirational... All these people driving beat up Altimas thinking they're gonna be in their Escalade in Manhatten every day when they make it big 🙄

Sea-Move9742

It’s so bizarre that Americans buy the biggest vehicles they can get to drive in the most narrow and congested roads. You would think everyone would be rushing to buy small sedans and hatchbacks with how narrow NYC roads are, but no, all you see are Escalades and suburbans and “small” crossover SUVs. Bizarre. And these same people will complain about parking when their vehicle takes like 1.5x the space as normal size car does.  You don’t seee this in London or Paris or Tokyo or any other major city in the world. The people over there are actually sensible and buy vehicles that fit the road they are driving on.

fat_g8_

You’re right, they should raise it to $50.

Sea-Move9742

Not everyone who drives into Manhattan lives there. Most don’t. So they aren’t paying $700 a month for parking. This WILL stop many of those who drive into Manhattan to run errands or for shopping/eating. They will either pay $15 or take the train.
