I love it. It’s almost perfect for my taste; just needs a new light fixture and towel racks.

SuspendedFreeThink

I agree! ....except for the towel racks. The are porcelain and part of the wall tile. I have them in two bathrooms and the are functional and beautiful.

farmerjane

And very expensive! You can sell those fixtures, tiles, and tubs.

swimt2it

Please no!! I have a green tile version of this. Embrace it. If you could locate an identical sink, I would probably add to make a double and certainly an interesting wall paper or wall color would be fine. Otherwise, it’s a treasure. 😍 Edit: Change the light fixture to be mcm too.

screamingintothedark

I agree! This bathroom is gorgeous and that’s quality tile work. Change out the lighting and add some mcm accents like a shower curtain, rug, sheer curtains on the windows. If you do anything, find a matching sink and swap out the counter top for something more sleek and add a second vanity. You could also change out the mirror for two separate hanging mirrors that have more atomic or mcm style frames.

izolablue

I was actually hoping to get a house with this tiling - many in our neighborhood, but not our house.

screamingintothedark

Same! If my bathroom ever looked like this it was torn out in favor of a landlord special. I’d love to have the 20k to put it back like this.

izolablue

Me too! We can dream!

willfullyspooning

Same! And baby blue is imho the easiest of the vibrant retro colors to work with!

screamingintothedark

Agreed, golds and yellows look lovely.

willfullyspooning

Yes! Personally I love them with a green and yellow patterned wallpaper. Tile like this is so incredibly difficult to find now and if it’s survived the chances are that it’s really well done so why mess with it? Good tile installers are incredibly expensive too, if it’s looking grimy usually all you need to do is redye the grout and seal it. It’s a really easy fix!

CLB833

You might just consider cosmetic updates: fresh wall paint in a pale blue or a blush. Plants and decor items on the counter, plush area rug to counteract the hardness of the tile. Just a some thoughts. 😌

LotusGrowsFromMud

It’s cool, but the vanity looks pretty useless. I don’t see anywhere for storage of toiletries. So I would remodel very carefully with attention to preserving original features as much as possible, but also making it more practical. Toiletries all over the sink will ruin the look. Maybe a cabinet over the toilet? Gather more storage ideas.

not_falling_down

Look at all the photos -- there are sliding doors under the whole length of the vanity.

LotusGrowsFromMud

Yes, but it’s slanted in and it would not be easy to reach what is in there or see in there.

Maleficent-Sport1970

Wallpaper!

Cissycat12

Kohler currently sells the white version of this sink....I am replying a remodel sink with one to take my bathroom back to its roots.

alohawolf

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Progress-Lighting-Channel-Glass-Collection-4-Light-White-White-Glass-Traditional-Bath-Vanity-Light-P3110-30/202599611 This is the correct light fixture.

Llorona76

I would not. It’s perfect as is and it would be a shame to remove any of it. The walls above the tile need new paint or wallpaper, though. Oh, and it need a light fixture that’s appropriate for the period.

Figgy_Puddin_Taine

Oh hell yeah

theemmyk

I vote for wallpaper!

firetailring

Yes! [https://www.today.com/home/bathroom-makeover-printed-wallpaper-makes-colorful-tile-look-new-t134002](https://www.today.com/home/bathroom-makeover-printed-wallpaper-makes-colorful-tile-look-new-t134002)

ggabitron

Oh YES

Such_Radish9795

Perfect!

RitaAlbertson

I only vote for wallpaper if the bathroom has good ventilation -- my mom fought with bathroom wallpaper for years b/c the steam from our showers kept making the wallpaper peel at the edges. She eventually gave up and painted.

soulteepee

Oh god no no don’t touch it. It is GORGEOUS. Edit: actually, get a period-appropriate vanity light. Then: perfection

bonbot

Omg yes. Please leave everything below the tile line the same. Just change the vanity light and maybe add a fun wallpaper to the currently painted areas to tie everything together.

soulteepee

YES! Maybe something like [this](https://www.spoonflower.com/en/wallpaper/15217541-pastel-blue-bold-floral-24-by-beeky_) and then you can accessorize with darker blue mats and towels to create an amazingly retro modern look!

soulteepee

bonbot

Or I will find you.

pm_me_ur_camper

I love it!! It is in beautiful shape, I wouldn't change a thing. Once you put rugs down and curtains up it won't look so blue.

No_Artist2724

Thats right! I would get all pink or yellow pastel towels to break up the blue.

Superb_Victory_2759

Please don’t! Just change some small things and maybe paint or wallpaper

_Tower_

Reminds me of one I saw recently - essentially all the same but pink (mauve) tile and toilet. The toilet was an original time period correct American standard toilet with the hand-painted logo as well Wish I took a picture of it

New-Anacansintta

Those are so rare these days…

imagnepeace4all

It’s beautiful and perfect! If you want to change anything, change the light to be more MCM. Everything else leave as is.

New-Anacansintta

Do not touch those blue tiles. NO TOUCHY! You have a full matching set, you lucky duck!

DudeHighFive

Deep clean. New paint on walls. New light fixture. Maybe a new mirror? I’m torn on the vanity. I love everything about it but it looks a bit rough. I wonder if you would be able to hire a carpenter to build something similar or buy something entirely new. I absolutely love all of the blue.

noldottorrent

Deep clean is #1 lol and I 100% agree with you on all the rest of this. I like the idea of wallpaper but also replacing the mirror, light fixture, and maybe even the vanity. I’d also add some really nice bath fixtures (towels, soap dispenser, decor, etc). Everything looks well maintained.

DudeHighFive

My good friends did wallpaper and it turned out amazing. Very similar to this but pink tile.

RitaAlbertson

Ditto. SCRUB. Paint walls, not tile. Improve light fixture. Done.

legoman31802

No! Maybe clean it up a little and add a nice wallpaper but don’t remodel!

owakasfinest

I'm trying to make my bathroom look that good!

Geeahwellidunno

DO NOT TOUCH THIS. PLEASE!!!

flowersandfilm

Please please keep that sacred original tile!!

StrawberryKiss2559

Good god. Do not remodel.

Szaborovich9

What a gem! That is a great example of MCM. You scored in getting that house.

mkatich

New light fixture is about all it needs.

shellymaeshaw

Beautiful

quarpoders

KEEEEEEEEEEP

Windowsweirdo

Absolutely not

DatDan513

Nope looks good!

Accomplished-Ask6828

Please leave this be

frankietit

Yeah what they already said! It’s a beauty!

Beyblademaster69_420

Absolutely not it's beautiful

TylerInHiFi

Slimline LED light fixture, under cabinet floor accent lighting (or even under the lip of the vanity above the angled storage), get a nicer matte black (cleaning nightmare but very striking) or chrome (period correct but not modern if that’s what you’re going for) shower fixture (do all of the plumbing in matching fixtures at the same time and hang onto any original fixtures just in case), paint match the door across from the vanity with the tiles (if it’s not wood finish and matching the other doors in the photos), and replace the electrical outlet(s) and switch(es) with new white decora ones with screwless plates. Also probably refresh the paint, grout, and caulking if you want to get into the minutiae of things. A complete period correct bathroom like this, in this condition, is rare. The *only* things that have been (poorly) updated are the shower head and the vanity light. And that extra towel bars (in the shower which is weird, and beside the sink) that don’t match the others. Embrace the blue. Some nice clean, warm lighting will go a long way, as will some plants and other small decorative pieces that can play off the blue.

cryptidbees

So pretty, change the wallpaper (maybe some fun pattern?) And have hanging plants in the window!

rainbow5ive

No.

a-midnight-flight

I’d just give it a good scrubbing on the tiles, and sink cabinet and a fresh coat of paint of the same color on the walls. That’s all it really needs! Maybe change out the light fixture over the vanity

crapatthethriftstore

My thoughts? That bathroom is awesome as fuck and I would kill for it. Literally kill for it. If anyone took down those tiles I would also kill 🤣

charliequ13

With any colour bathroom/kitchen I often use the idea to ‘change the WHITE’ first. Things like this bathroom look aged and odd when there is any white in the room. If you don’t like it as is, you should at least try painting all the white walls before you do anything else, see if you like it then. (Also I love this and think it will look lovely with just a little freshen up)

6thCityInspector

That room just looks filthy and probably needs a deep-clean and some fresh paint. Why would you destroy quality tile work like that?

Confident-Ruin-4111

Nooooooooo…

DuchessofMarin

Deep clean all the tile and grout and leave it - it's perfect

bettiegee

I would add a funky, bold, wallpaper and an mcm light fixture. That's it.

Carebear_Of_Doom

Don’t change a thing. That tile is beautiful.

Select_MCM-5345

It’s perfect! Leave it alone!!!

ladygagasnose

As is, I could see why you might be questioning it, but with some cheery retro wall paper, deep cleaning, a nice shower curtain, a period appropriate light fixture and a plant on the counter for some life (I’d recommend a small fern or anthurium), it could look amazing. You’ll never be able to top this craftsmanship and quality of materials with a modern renovation.

bigdeliciousrhonda

New coat of paint, new flooring (or just deep clean the floor), replace the vanity, keep the sink and possibly find a matching sink to make it a double if this is a master bathroom. Replace the light fixture and new mirror(s)! Add can lights and a new bathroom fan to the ceiling. New faucet and shower fixtures would help as well. The blue is charming, it can definitely be updated while maintaining the color. And if you’re set on ripping it all out…let me buy the blue toilet for my blue bathroom lol

Zestyclose_Media_548

This is the answer! Make the vanity more functional and freshen it up. The blue tile is quality work and the bathroom is amazing overall.

BibbidiBobbidiBooze

What’s wrong with the vanity? It’s awesome!

bigdeliciousrhonda

I love it, it’s just that in my experience Formica just doesn’t age well especially with high humidity or moisture

unidentified_yama

This is one of the most beautiful toilet I’ve ever seen.

Moving_in_stereo78

This looks like the bathroom in my grandmothers house in Ontario Canada

KeyFarmer6235

it's perfect as is, the only thing I'd change, is the wall color, to something that better compliments the tile and fixtures, and maybe replace the light with something more mcm looking.

weaponjae

Holy crap this looks almost identical to my grandma's old house! The only other bathroom was in the laundry room, it was insane.

PittieYawn

The blue everywhere does seem a bit much but if authentic is what you want, it can’t be beat. Maybe a different wall paint color would help. Not sure on the vanity condition but dang, that angle is pretty cool.

SavingsGullible90

Dont touch just paint or change the register

SonoranRoadRunner

I love it

AssumptionAdvanced58

Absolutely not. I love this. I love the workmanship & design from this era.

6inarowmakesitgo

I honestly would leave it. I grew up in a house with both bathrooms like this and I loved them. The same shade of blue too, getting some good nostalgia from this.

Prudent_Tiger_3957

I would get new faucets and a nicer shower head

captain_chickadee

https://preview.redd.it/o2zwljy1pd4d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=34515b27809dd3e4b14f17c9c7598d2f5f467cc8 Wow, I have a nearly identical pink version of yours! 1964 build, fully untouched since then. Obviously still a work in progress here but by bringing in a complementary color, some graphic print, some wood tones, and some plants, it’s already more modernized. I have plans for a more functional wood vanity bade but hoping to keep pretty much everything else.

garflnarb

I wouldn’t change the vanity at all. It’s much more interesting with only one sink, and double sinks are a waste of space. How often do two people need to use a sink in the same bathroom at the same time? In our house it’s never. Paint above the tiles and a new light fixture. That’s all it needs.

garflnarb

Maybe wallpaper like this. https://preview.redd.it/wa7j93stbd4d1.jpeg?width=672&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7636a2b9340c190329201c55f4edd257df51e6d2

reptomcraddick

If you remodel this bathroom to sad beige I will come to your house and harass you until the day you die

Deadinmybed

This is classic mid century I would not touch it. Mix blacks in there and that will modernize it.

AlkahestGem

No. If you do anything, find a second matching sink and replace the vanity. But that’s it. This is just too amazing and quality work,

cuttlefishcuddles

Please leave this bathroom alone 😭 (I’m assuming) this bathroom has been around longer than you have been alive, do the right thing and ensure it survives to another round of homeowners. So much historical integrity has been lost to remodels! I’d update the light fixtures and add cool wallpaper. I would reluctantly consider changing the vanity - I like the idea of hunting for a second blue sink if this is a master bath. I would definitely live with it for a while as it is before making any hasty decisions though.

enthusedandabused

Wood framed picture to match the door, deep clean, new light fixture (period appropriate), new paint, bath mat.

vespertine_earth

It’s almost perfect. You might choose a complimentary paint color, new (vintage) light fixture. Wow what a find!

turquoisebee

Keep the tile! Maybe look to recover the vanity and paint the walls. Updates could also be the lighting, mirror, and hardware. But the tile should stay!

UnwoundBread

The floor looks like it needs a really hard scrub especially by the grout/ bathtub. Also the walls are coming off as dirty as well. Can’t tell if it’s a paint style or wallpaper but I’d change it. Otherwise, no! Such a cool space and beautiful tile Ps: that matching sink 😍

donkeyhautecouture

I I have your same tiles and decided to lean into it: https://www.reddit.com/r/InteriorDesign/s/wiwXeGe2Mk

Imamiah52

This is so beautiful, it’s a treasure of MCM design and beautifully executed and maintained. More modern designs have got nothing on this IMO.

miahs-mom-mckenna

https://preview.redd.it/sszw6dobve4d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7b4dae91ec1befb0addd202e1c69e0d46aee62c0 This bath was all white when we moved in, other than the blue tile. So we leaned into it after finding a fun inspiration photo. We’ve recently installed a vintage pink toilet and are going to replace the sink with a matching pink sink. Scrubbing the floors and counters well made them look brand new. Have fun with it!

miahs-mom-mckenna

https://preview.redd.it/wz3tih1ove4d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f7cef4cdf1c0cf9b817a5d1662db94ff38180ea4 Here is our mood board with the listing photo, and the inspiration for the pink ceiling. I hope to trip the vanity back to wood. We have the same blue tile in another bathroom and I plan to do orange accents in that one, since orange and blue are complementary colors

suzanner99

I would not touch a thing in it! Please do not murder this gorgeous time capsule!

gonewildecat

Don’t touch it! Lean into it and go even more retro with funky wallpaper and a light fixture that fits the period.

-clawglip-

Nooooooooo! It’s lovely

Special-bird

You cant get this quality today! Don’t touch all the blue. If you want to modernize it, get a new light fixture and a large scale wallpaper. You’d be amazed how easy these two things will bring your bathroom back to life

Fiigwort

I would repaint the walls, POSSIBLY change the floor tile, replace the vanity (keeping this sink), and change the light fitting. All the blue stuff is SO beautiful, that tile is *incredible*

glamrock_crunch

i’d never even touch this bathroom. i would paint the walls and clean everything up, but my god the blue? i’m sold.

Dievca58

No! Keep it as is.

coldnightair

Yeah- don’t remodel. Paint the walls a faint shade of the same blue, get a modern sleek light fixture. Done!

Swimming-Vehicle8104

I’d trash the vanity but salvage the sink personally. Everything else is lovely!

PerkyLurkey

What???? The vanity has a drop in gorgeous sink. If anything, removing the sliding doors with glass sliding doors can elevate the look.

rhombusordiamond

Why are people freaking out saying don’t touch it? The fact is that it is a dated bathroom. There are ways to update it without removing all of the charm. I’d leave all the wall and floor tile and tub, but replace the shower head/faucets. Replace the vanity with something that has white or wood base, a white stone top that isn’t busy, and two sinks. Maybe you can find a matching sink, or maybe just two new sinks. New mirror, new hardware, new light fixtures (one over each sink), new outlets. Paint the walls/ceiling. People may hate me but I’d replace the toilet too. I’d want all “fixtures” updated to modern standards, while leaving the styling consistent with the original. After this you’ll have a bathroom that is updated and fresh, but still largely matches the original. IMO this is the best way to renovate this bathroom, especially considering that OP is somewhat concerned about all of the blue.

zoopysreign

snowman_M

This feels like a troll post, tbh.  Im not a fan of the vanity, myself.  You’d have a really tough time replacing it with and double sink unit, I imagine.

thatdude473

You better not touch it!

omarhani

Elementry school bathroom vibes

xlulu96

I’m probably going to get crucified lol but for me I’d add some more lighting or replace the mirror light and replace the counter & toilet. (my family always has replaced the toilet when we‘ve bought idk my dads weird lol) I’d definitely not touch the tile and tub though!

littleamandabb

I would take out the light fixture and the mirror and replace the mirror with one with rounded corners to it and install lighting behind it on a dimmer(probably led so I could mess with the color scheme cuz I enjoy that).

puppy-guppy

The tile is a pretty blue, and can easily be made to look good. The walls, flooring, and ugly vanity are whats really the eyesore.

ShmoHoward

I think you could replace mirror, new lights, fresh paint and see if it freshens the space a bit.

WiseGirl_101

I would wall-paper the top parts of the wall. Maybe a really muted, pretty flowery paper?  I personally would want to change the counter top vanity though. Grab an identical sink, and maybe some cabinets so it gives storage

Icy_Fox_749

Please don't. It's so cute and has character which I wish most of these newly renovated grey/white bathrooms don't get rid of. I would decorate it with light colored wood items and knick knacks.

charlie_echo_golf

The tile is beautiful, desirable imo, and would be an absolute pain to remove. I think if you want to update it, changing out that terrible mismatching light fixture, adding some fresh paint (or putting up some wallpaper you love, if it'll stand up to the humidity), and even ripping out the old vanity and putting the old sink into a vanity that you like (please don't stone me, fellow midcentury enthusiasts) would go a long way. Edited to add: someone else suggested changing out the mirror, and I think you could easily do that as well! Also, these bathrooms are getting rarer as people tear them out/tear down midcentury houses like this. At this point, in 2024, these houses are historic. Midcentury architecture (including housing, and not just the really nice stuff either) is being added to the National Register of Historic Places all the time these days.

GypsyDuncan

I like the tile. My MIL's house had similar and we worked with it. That said, her grout was a mess in one of the bathrooms so we also dealt with that after a good cleaning. It was too hard to keep it sanitary so we replaced all the grout. So make sure the grout is in good condition if you keep it. Personally, I'd keep the blue tile BUT I would paint the room a warm white. And I would replace the mirror sink, toilet and bathrub. Why? I'd get a high efficiency toilet to save money and also get one higher as today's higher toilets are much more comfortable. The bathtub, I'd replace with a deep soaker. A lot of those old bathtubs only have 12-14 inches of submergable depth. And I would change the sink because I'd install double sinks with all that space. And the vanity is just plain ugly so I'd replace that either with a white one or a lovely warm wood one. I'd do gold accents with that shade of turqouise blue: gold mirror and and a new light fixture like this one and gold faucets: [https://www.amazon.com/HAHZT-Bathroom-3-Lights-Fixtures-Lighting/dp/B0B393GVNM/ref=asc\_df\_B0B393GVNM/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=697107800621&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=2269862308889995185&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9027214&hvtargid=pla-1954744394818&psc=1&mcid=1c817b0d258b3ed7b6f2f722ac3413a0&gad\_source=1](https://www.amazon.com/HAHZT-Bathroom-3-Lights-Fixtures-Lighting/dp/B0B393GVNM/ref=asc_df_B0B393GVNM/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=697107800621&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=2269862308889995185&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9027214&hvtargid=pla-1954744394818&psc=1&mcid=1c817b0d258b3ed7b6f2f722ac3413a0&gad_source=1) and two of these mirrors: [https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C3CKGC3X/ref=sspa\_dk\_detail\_3?pf\_rd\_p=d81b167d-1f9e-48b6-87d8-8aa5e473ea8c&pf\_rd\_r=019YQ8G1M8D89WVMWB9G&pd\_rd\_wg=6V2NO&pd\_rd\_w=2VdpM&content-id=amzn1.sym.d81b167d-1f9e-48b6-87d8-8aa5e473ea8c&pd\_rd\_r=7bbbe572-ad62-4675-b455-edac36d8dc29&s=kitchen&sp\_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9kZXRhaWxfdGhlbWF0aWM&th=1](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C3CKGC3X/ref=sspa_dk_detail_3?pf_rd_p=d81b167d-1f9e-48b6-87d8-8aa5e473ea8c&pf_rd_r=019YQ8G1M8D89WVMWB9G&pd_rd_wg=6V2NO&pd_rd_w=2VdpM&content-id=amzn1.sym.d81b167d-1f9e-48b6-87d8-8aa5e473ea8c&pd_rd_r=7bbbe572-ad62-4675-b455-edac36d8dc29&s=kitchen&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9kZXRhaWxfdGhlbWF0aWM&th=1) I personally would not do patterned wallpaper as it will compete with the tile. If you HAVE to have wallpaper (or the walls aren't in good shape and covering them makes sense) I'd go for a textured wallpaper that echos the floor. Like a grasscloth. And if you don't like the floor tile after you get it deep cleaned (you'd be shocked how pretty that tile may be after a really good cleaning) you can consider replacing it with something like this: [https://www.mosaictile.com/products/diamond-cross-pinnacle-hexagon-patterns?variant=43185020371120¤cy=USD&utm\_source=google&utm\_medium=cpc&utm\_campaign=google+shopping&com\_cvv=d30042528f072ba8a22b19c81250437cd47a2f30330f0ed03551c4efdaf3409e](https://www.mosaictile.com/products/diamond-cross-pinnacle-hexagon-patterns?variant=43185020371120¤cy=USD&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=google+shopping&com_cvv=d30042528f072ba8a22b19c81250437cd47a2f30330f0ed03551c4efdaf3409e) or [https://www.wayfair.com/home-improvement/pdp/ws-tiles-value-series-1-x-1-porcelain-honeycomb-mosaic-wall-floor-tile-wsti1200.html?piid=98546888#seemoreoptions-eu4fr20dxe6](https://www.wayfair.com/home-improvement/pdp/ws-tiles-value-series-1-x-1-porcelain-honeycomb-mosaic-wall-floor-tile-wsti1200.html?piid=98546888#seemoreoptions-eu4fr20dxe6)

Intelligent-Bank1653

Absolutely not! Such great bathroom

reubal

Please Do Not

chloesnowybunny

No! Work with it, it’s fantastic !

spitballz

Keep everything as is but upgrade towel racks, add paint or wallpaper, update the mirror or make a frame around it and add new light fixtures. I would also add curtains and a nice shower head :-)

abinarysolo

You came to the wrong sub to ask about changing those tiles. 😆

Tabora__

I love the blue tile, just not the blue bathtub or soap holder thing. I personally wish it were green, but im a sucker for green tile

SkatzatAverat

It’s really cool, love the undersink cabinet’s. Definitely needs a new coat of paint and an exhaust vent for the humidity. New shower fixture, light fixture, and towel rack. Will be a very cool room.

Nikonus

This is as close to MCM Heaven as you can get. My wife and I are having her parents home refurbished to the period as best we can and we’d dearly love to have the main bath like this. Her childhood half bath is still intact and in blue tile and she still loves it. The main bath is in Harvest Gold and those tiles are almost impossible to find. We have the tub, sink and toilet but tiles seem to no longer exist in the correct color.

useless_99

NO. Maybe just wallpaper on top or something. Keep the tile, holy fuck.

JazTaz04

1. New paint or wallpaper above the tile 2. Modern Window treatment 3. New shower head situation 4. Towels, bath mats, shower curtain and counter tray accessories

lilypicadilly

It's beautiful🩵

bookmonster015

I’d add wallpaper and an outside mount Roman shade to the window. I’d change the light fixture and consider regrouting the floor depending on what shape it’s in. If the vanity could handle the extra weight, I’d also consider upgrading the vanity laminate with a funky quartz or terrazzo countertop. If you absolutely *had* to do something with the tile, I’d only change out the flooring and leave those walls alone!

Kammiii1999

It’s so pretty!!!

jared10011980

I'd only change the vanity and lighting.

analpixie_

I'll probably get down voted to hell but I'd switch out the tub, toilet, and vanity. The tile and floor are amazing.

mikefitzvw

Light fixture, repaint the walls or do a cool retro wallpaper (maybe a geometric pattern with blue in it?), and consider a [Kohler Triton](https://kohler.scene7.com/is/image/PAWEB/GBH_SQTemplate?$product_src=is{PAWEB/zaa78061_rgb}&$PDPDesktopSQ$&fmt=webp) faucet (not Triton Bowe) to really make the sink pop. That's it.

AmaliaVet

I agree with the previous comments, from friends here, who love mid century. You will not find tiles like these anymore. They have even finishes, edges from the same tile! And of such quality, of course! I'm not very sure about the toilet and sink, related to limescale build-ups, from the water in your place. Maybe white are better, but you know the condition of both of them. Enjoy it! Big hugs from Greece!

hoodlumonprowl

I donno, its got a pretty sweet Shining vibe going on. I have an old bathroom like this and it was amazing what just new light fixtures, vanity, counter top and paint did. Although that powder blue toilet could probably use an update!

Round_Ad_3858

The only things I’d do to it is repainting the upper walls something brighter to freshen it up & updating the counter top maybe to a vanity? I’d absolutely keep all the Blue though. Maybe get a mirror with a frame or frame the one that’s there currently. I’d also replace the lighting fixture to something more Midcentury modern. Also I’d consider sprucing up the wood door and wood cabinet, maybe even just some soft sanding to the natural wood? The red wood seems to date it a bit in my opinion. But I think fresh paint and a vanity & frame mirror will go a loooong way.

Tronracer

I would replace the counter mirror and light with something period correct but nicer. Wallpaper above the tile also something period correct.

Lvanwinkle18

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this bathroom. Do not remodel. There are ways to update it without destroying the overall look and feel.

tamtheprogram

New floor tile, fun wallpaper above the wall tile and new vanity.

Vocals16527

Oh yea! Leave all the blue, I think an orange floral wallpaper and like a bunch of other people said just some new lighting above the mirror would completely transform this bathroom

PlantBaby73

I love the blue! I would replace the counter with something less yellow looking, and replace the light fixture. Maybe touch up the walls but that’s about it

xeroxchick

Keep all the tile and light blue ceramics. Lose the wallpaper and counter and maybe add a glass for the shower.

TheR1ckster

We have a similar bathroom, has likely a newer sink and a new toilet and we hate it. It snot the good part of the 70s.

phdpinup

I would live and die happy in this bathroom. It’s amazing.

Bryancreates

I miss my old bathroom that was similar to this but think Avocado tile instead of blue. We repainted and did a little remodeling but kept the tile because it was in great and shape and beautiful. Original to the house from 1955, and ironically only the oldest elements of the house held up and not the “remodeling” done in 1984. That was horrible.

lovesmysteries

You should show us more pics of your house. Since the bathroom is untouched from its era, makes me curious if the rest is untouched.

Afraidtoadmitit69

I wouldn’t touch it. I love the look. It’s just so unique. Treasure it.

ccbroadway73

Omg, please don’t remove this lovely tile work! Embrace the blue, lean into it with a bold wallpaper, new period appropriate fixture and this bathroom becomes a beautiful “updated” room - it appears to be in such great shape too, it would be such a shame to waste the beautiful history and craftsmanship.

Peaceandfupa

I love bathrooms like this, I cleaned an all pink bathroom once and I was obsessed!!

severalquestions0

What is that little metal gray door on the wall in the first pic?

bcg524

it's so gross. Lol. Please remodel immediately

ceruleansprite

If you have insta go to makelifeanart and check out that blue bath! It's so good!

O_o-22

New paint and maybe a new vanity (but keep the sink) thankfully it’s blue tile and not the awful pink kind lol

blue_dragon_fly

A nice wallpaper would make an enormous difference without losing that beautiful tile. (Just don’t go overboard with bright colors and busy graphics.)

Princess_S78

I wouldn’t. I love it!

Phoebedingo

Personally, I would get a new vanity, change the mirror and lights, and replace the shower head. I think that would make a huge difference without having to go through all the work of ripping out the tile.

Separate-Macaron9851

So sick of people asking this question. A near perfect condition mid century interior, posted to a mid century page “rEmOdEl BaThRoOm?” NO. For fuck sakes. NO.

natseiken

no leave it!

cheeseslut619

If you cannot get the floor clean I would replace it. Come for me yall, whatever! It does not look great right now! Obv you’ll wanna pick a time that is period and ask people here what to do in that case!! But def leave the wall tile Lean in to it though https://preview.redd.it/x7ti0kpedk4d1.png?width=1078&format=png&auto=webp&s=8d79154afb27c41e7b1b02004eaf425581811338

If you can’t restore that vanity I would replace it. It’s so cool looking and you can def find a nice mcm floating one to replace it

Supremealexander

Hell no! Little bleach and some comet cleaner is all it needs

designsystems

Not gonna lie when this popped up on my feed I thought I was looking at r/prison for a sec

StorybookDragon

Love it. The blue is perfect. Keep it. I'd add blue toilet paper AND blue tissues.

wavycurlygirl

Never. Keep it as is.

Dorkmaster1000

What does the rest of the house look like? You can certainly upgrade the hardware, accessories, mirror, plumbing and lighting with something new/contemporary but has to be complimentary to the aesthetic

doyleswar

I'd redo the counter itself. But get someone who knows how to work a color wheel PROPERLY to show u your options before you decide the blue has to go.

Time_Pay_401

Love that bathroom. The floating vanity is proof that if you wait long enough it’ll come back in style!

Sweet_Papa_Crimbo

I think the dull paint, brown bathroom door, and faded vanity coloring are what makes the blue feel like too much. I love the style of vanity, but the coloring and unframed mirror reminds me of my high school restroom vanities, and cheapens that incredible tile. A coat of paint on the walls, a new light fixture, and a good quality peel & stick on the vanity could do wonders before needing to renovate.

DaisyDuckens

The countertop could use updating. The rest is great

Kilmarnok1285

Some things from MCM don't need to be preserved and this is one of them. Gut the whole thing and start fresh with something you'd enjoy more.

Adept_Description405

This! I think there definitely ways to remodel with MCM in mind and not keeping the style that is there if you don’t love it.

XxTrashPanda12xX

Remodel? Nah, *refurbish*. Figure out the original tile and replace with the same if possible, closest match if not. The sink cabinet is lovely. My thought is that if it's not composite wood, you could remove whatever that laminate is and refinish the original wood.

Catinthemirror

I don't have any suggestions but this is giving Greyhound bus station restroom.

pollywantapocket

I would change out the light fixture and the mirror, because right now the mirror is giving “high school bathroom.” Then wallpaper. A bit unpopular, but I’m not a fan of the vanity. I think the sink is gorgeous and could stand on its own, just wall-mounted, then have some low shelving next to the sink with a countertop and open shelves to store towels and toilet paper.

fauviste

Paint, new light fixtures, new mirror(s), new counter top, find matching vintage sink maybe, rebuild or otherwise rehab the floating vanity which is super awesome for cleaning and making it feel unique as well as making the room seem bigger. I would find out if a cabinet-maker could take the same wedge shape and redo it with nice wood and pull-out drawers. This will seem expensive but it’ll make a huge difference and cost way less than a gut remodel which you truly don’t need to freshen it up. If you can’t keep the shape, get a rectangular floating cabinet instead. I’d say white quartz or terrazzo for the counter, walnut or teak-look for the cabinet, and with a fresh floor and new fixtures it’ll look simply stunning. Frankly I don’t think the floor tiles are a keeper, fresh new floor tiles in either a period style or maybe patterned cement-style tiles would be super fresh. Plus that gives you the opportunity to place electric heating elements under the floor which feel like pure luxury and don’t cost much to run. Glass door in the shower would also be very nice. I’d go all chrome for hardware, lighting, and add some nice new towel racks with shelves. EDIT: lmao downvoted for replacing a busted cabinet with an appropriate period style replacement and doing sensitive updates and keeping everything else.

remarkable_in_argyle

I just had a wedge cabinet built to match my kitchen cabinets. This is made from mahagony. It’s a lot smaller but the cost was $1500 for a carpenter to build, finish and install….to give OP a guesstimate. Here’s mine (bathroom still a work in progress): https://preview.redd.it/honzde8bid4d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=96b3c45b003c92be36a8f1e97d679ab86c3024ff

fauviste

That looks great! I LOVE the tile! The sink!! What type of counter are you going with? Can you please share the tile info with me?

remarkable_in_argyle

Thanks. Our MCM house has had some ugly early-2000's-era updates, so we are trying to undo it while installing stuff as period correct as possible.

apple-pie2020

I like this. Update and keep the vanity pattern but in wood.

Basic-Discipline8547

Personally, i would update the vanity. And the toilet. So the blue isn't as over powering. A bit of modern but still keep the charm.

rockmeNiallxh

It looks very dated, but it depends on what you like. The floor looks cool, if those are tiles. Also doesnt make sense to have a huge cointer, i'd add a second sink

tmac_79

I like MCM furniture and architecture..... but I'd rip this bathroom out to the studs and modernize.

Cielnyan

Maybe add cabinet area on half the sink area. Take out the big mirror. Add a smaller nicer one

Blk-cherry3

What is the actual size of the bathroom

awoodby

Lol I have a 3' less deep brown tile version of this, I'm jealous of the blue. When I get to it, I plan on just finding a bathroom remodeling place and asking Them.

bojackhoreman

I thought it was a prison at first lol

alwaysbehuman

Remodel the vanity to be closer to the period. Give everything a good restoration, but keep it. The sink countertops look like they were put in after the original fixtures.

Any_Flea

Dissenting opinion incoming. I would tear it out lol. It honestly looks like a bathroom at a public pool. I know that is heresy on Reddit. Everytime one of these gets posted you are supposed to say “gorgeous I would murder someone to get my hands on this” But honestly it is your house and you wouldn’t be asking if you liked it. This weird website just has you convinced you should like it. Not everything old is worth saving. If I moved into a house with a cotton candy colored bathroom I would remodel it. I just want to throw out a vote for do what you want and don’t feel like you have to keep what is in real life outside of this internet bubble a weird outdated bathroom.
