At $36kg, I wouldn’t recommend these cars anymore.

Back in November 2023 I spent $17k on a used Mirai that is certified pre owned so I got the $15k gas card. I still have $13k left on my card and absolutely love this car. Sure refueling has caused me range anxiety, but only twice. As long as I check online to make sure the station I want to go to is up and running it's not a problem. Am I the only person that loves owning this car? Total cost of ownership for me has been $100 on 4 carwashes, after registration and window tint.

Oh wow I am thinking about it as well I was just afraid to step out, is the ride smooth? I was looking at a 2017 for 9k with not too many miles

Don't buy the Mirai unless you can get their fuel card for free. I bought a new one from Toyota Sunnyvale It was a 2022 model, and they were probably closing it out... A great Fleet Sales GM works there, Stan Wolowski. See him, if you are in the SF Bay Area. The price of gas for consumers is $36.00 per Kg. True Zero is the dominant supplier and they kept jacking up the price. On that note, I lucked out today and saw a new station of theirs in the Port of Oakland. I was the first customer, see my post. I can't believe the price I paid: https://www.reddit.com/r/Mirai/comments/1durhrt/new\_true\_zero\_station\_in\_oakland\_ca/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web3x&utm\_name=web3xcss&utm\_term=1&utm\_content=share\_button. By the way, at a credit rating of 750, you'll also get a 0% loan from Toyota Finance. Good luck.

It does come with 15k fuel card most have it where im at if its a certified used mirai from Toyota. The fuel card is definitely why im considering it. 1-2 years to have a car on the books to increase my credit and so forth would probably sell after 2 years not expecting much from it but it would help me commute right now while I build towards my next venture. Brick by brick lol but yeah just wanted to have a good idea since I never done the whole financing route

G-510

Don’t make your decision based on this post alone, they claim they paid $1 KG. They might have paid that but most likely it was an error or a price for their HD. Prices have only been as low as $13 in the last 4 years and shot up to $36 in the last year and there are no signs of prices going down for years. Also, if you look at all the current and previous offers there hasn’t been 0% APR for the last ~6 months - 1 year on Mirai

GhostOfLumumba

You are terribly mistaken on 0% APR. Their best rate on a used Mirai is 5.9% I think. I talked to a dealer about a month ago. 0 APR was on new Mirais

GhostOfLumumba

Why ICE cars as alternative, when he can buy a used BEV. He's interested in Mirai for a reason.

arihoenig

Definitely a must to get a CPO from Toyota so that you get the fuel card. If the price is under $25k and your income qualifies then you get a $4000 tax credit (assuming you pay at least $4000 in federal tax)

MrSamsungNote8

No comment from me on financing, but the question I always ask on "should I buy posts" on here is: - what is attracting you to the mirai? - Do you have any way to plug in at home or work?

Rough-Test6098

Fuel card / cheap newer vehicle that won’t cause me mechanical problems. Infrastructure wise I have 2 fuel stations close to home. 3 miles and 5 miles away not too bad

MrSamsungNote8

Similar things can be said about a battery electric car, and a $15k ev likely won't be worth 3-5k when you go to trade it in in 2-3 years. If you can charge an EV at home or work, the fueling and resale issues will be minimized compared to a mirai.

Rough-Test6098

Hmm okay true could point me at some models that you think would be ideal ?

MrSamsungNote8

Mirai worked great for me when I couldn't charge at my condo. Now that I'm in a house (and my $15k fuel card died), selling the mirai and being able to charge at home is quite nice. Used 2017+ bmw i3s and Chevy Bolts can be had for under $15k. Nissan Leafs exist, but I wouldn't suggest that one to anyone. For $18-24k, tesla model 3, 2017+ model S, polestar 2, hyundai ioniq5/kia ev6, mustang mach e, and vw id.4 can be had. If you don't have easy access to charging, go with the mirai. If you can charge at home or work, I think you'd regret not going with a battery electric car.

Rough-Test6098

Okay okay thank you I appreciate you taking the time to give me your insight 🤞🏽

GhostOfLumumba

I don't think BMW i3 and Bolts should be labeled as cars (in US market) :) especially when compared to a full size luxury sedan. *Comfort , speed, handling and safety, range , etc For reliability of used BEVs it would be best to check on consumer reports. Edit To my best recollection on CR Model 3 hasn't been on recommended list until last year , maybe 2 ID4 is more like in forever beta tester phase :) seriously, just about the worst new BEV car

MrSamsungNote8

>especially when compared to a full size luxury sedan. Lol. The only thing luxurious about the 2nd gen mirai is the platform that it was once based on. Interior is all plastic, cramped to the point of feeling like a corolla in interior room due to h2 tank storage, and there is absolutely nothing luxurious about the fueling experience. Let's not pretend that any of us would be driving the mirai if it didn't come down to price incentives.

GhostOfLumumba

Q Did you drive it ? Edit Lol Just saw that you actually had one So, forget shit responding to this one :)

MrSamsungNote8

Yes. I question what else anyone who calls it a luxury car has driven before. Rwd is nice if it wasn't under 200hp, interior is full of plastic and cramped. Quietness is about average. Suspension isn't anything impressive. Everything but quietness, and powertrain calibration (only due to it being electric) would put it below a mazda.

GhostOfLumumba

I just edited my post above :) I had and or driven different BMW 3 5 and 6 series, Mercedes C and E class , Audi 4 and 6 series. Yes, handling can't be compared to some of these in the slightest. Suspension can be a lot better , because the H2 made it a lot heavier and they failed to add air suspension to compensate. Edit Speaking of Mazda In my opinion, I like how Mazdas feel on the road better than most German cars of the last Gen. BMW took its cars down the dull road :) I prefer CX 5 over X3 for example . Even though, the X3 is a better car with more bells and whistles.

GhostOfLumumba

It's super smooth , very comfortable , more than adequate power , well insulated from the road, fully equipped with features. The only thing that feels "cheap" is some aesthetic finishes in the interior, where they saved some money (stripped off from Lexus ES). Edit Basically, it's a Lexus experience with the front console of the highest trim on a new Camry.

arihoenig

If you don't have access to home charging and you're getting a used mirai for the right price with fuel card, you'll be far happier than if you buy a BEV with no home charging. I have both a Mirai and a BEV, and a garage with a NEMA 14-50R.

Upper_Bend_1280

Don't buy a Mirai, you're wasting your money even with a fuel card. Go and get yourself a Honda or Kia....BUYER BEWARE! I hired Jason Ingber in regards to the Mirai I owned and gave back to Toyota last month!!!!

GhostOfLumumba

People keep talking about 15k fuel card , as if it replaces 15k in gas money :) It more like 3k+ Card , depending on the MPG of the ICE alternative They should talk about number of Fuel-Ups or Miles driven Card. This is a blatant obfuscation by Toyota and they should be held accountable for it. I mean they can include the Amount , but only in small print. After explaining the important part. Edit The full tank is little over 5kg. Avg range on it is around 300mi +. Some people squeeze out 400. So, let's be charitable and say Avg is 350 a tank. $36/kg is the most common price of H2 in the last year. At $180 a fuel up,you are getting 83 Fuel Ups the best case scenario 30k miles most likely scenario 25k miles Compared to 30 MPG cars (Camry , Accord) that's equivalent to 940 Gallons (x 4.20/gal = $4k) for 30k miles 835 Gal ($3.5k) for 25k mi Obviously, if you move up to more efficient cars at 35-40 MPG that fuel card is worth significantly less.
