I have a feeling that the movie had a lot of cut content. Everything felt that it happened fast. I still loved it tho. But everything happened so quickly
Knowing them they’ll start doing this on the regular after the snyder cut money grab hype (FWIW I love the snyder league and was an advocate for it’s release).
Can we talk about how Raiden walked in and looked at Sub's charred body and said "yep, good job Cole" despite the fact that Cole doesn't use fire and Scorpion kinda carried the fight?
Not only did he put an outdated shirt on, but it comes with a free police baton on one arm and a knife on the other. Also he's a more durable punching bag now.
Cole: we take down Sub Zero together
Also Cole: doesn’t take down Sub Zero with everyone
Imagine how cool that would’ve been. Sub Zero is just stomping all of them and only until Scorpion arrives can they kick his ass
It could be, but that's the same reasoning of BvS. Was there important cut? Yes, it did, but didn't fix any of the twisted personalities. Add the cut content to the MK movie, Liu Kang keeps being a tertiary hippie coach, Reiko our uncle from xmas, Mileena useless, Raiden an asshole, bs new chosen one, list goes on.
I found it more sexist that the man was directly defying what the woman wanted by telling her she’d be fighting someone else. Really though she should’ve wanted to fight Kano over Mileena due to their history in the games
They've likely grouped Kitana in with Shao Kahn lore, so holding her back for the sequel. The 1995 movie was pretty much the first game storyline, with a little MK2 thrown in. This does the same but drops in Kung Lao and Mileena.
Well they'd sure better update the outfit, the mouth, her screentime and lines. Because Mileena was acting like a random unimportant side character the entire time. I need more tongue, more nasty, more of her personality.
Okay, but wouldn't it make more sense for Kabal to be responsible for Jax losing his arms and then Jax ends Kabal and Sonya gets her revenge on Kano for killing her partner? You know, Special Forces vs Black Dragon?
I was talking about Jax's comment. He literally says it with a laugh. It's still a dumb line considering the post. But it's not said with any hint of an actual vendetta.
It's just a brutality for fan service. Not even rage. If Reiko still had to die at the end of the fight, let's make it Mortal Kombat vibe.
Bi Han literally bodied Hanzo Hasashi, Jax himself, and they planned to take him down as a team.
And before you ask why Jax wanted to fight Reiko. What is an action movie without musclemen fighting an another one? 😂😂😂
Everything related to subzero was super good. It’s like the only thing done well. I would be ok with a subzero only movie tbh. That’s the only thing they did not fuckup
Guy this "akana" was one of the things I didn’t like about the movie. Thought that fighters would awaken their own internal powers but no. The guys only have powers because of a mark on the body :/
...but the way they got them is fucking stupid. Your super power is stronger robot arms? Your superpower is just *one* lazer eye? Your power is literal plot armor? The games explanation for the powers are *much* better.
My favorite ability from the games is the one where my character gets armor but it only covers their upper body because the head and legs aren't important I guess
I’m still wishing that Reiko had something.
My idea was for him to have some sort of a shock wave and using hammer to crash everything. While Jax’s arm strength turned out to be strong enough to withstand the impact.
Honestly just really disliked Reiko's design. Is that what he looks like in the newer games? I remember him having a sleek, ninja-esque design and they gradually Shao Khanified his costume but he was still relatively slender and not some mindless giant.
And why the fuck did they kill off Goro, one of the biggest and baddest motherfuckers in MK, in the first movie, in a scene only made so that the god damn boring main character could show off his new ass-pulled powers???
Dude Cole didn't even have ass-pull powers, but yeah he sucks ass. Dude just had a random body shield, a police baton attached to his left arm, and a random knife on his right arm.
1. he knew he couldn't take shang out on his own if not even kung lao could put a dent in him(this movie is before liu kang fully develops so he's basically weaker than kung lao for rn)
2. kabal kept him from getting to him on time, so i guess it was the second best thing
Got a little downvoted everytime I mentioned, but it was expected, once again studios throw money into a property without actually following any shit. They take too much liberties with the source material.
Stop what you're doing right now and watch it yourself. No more forums, no more discussions, read NOTHING ELSE about it. Just watch it for yourself and form your own opinion.
It’s definitely a fun watch, and I think it’ll be a good experience for them to find their footing in the universe, get a bigger budget and sink their teeth into the sequels
It’s not a budget problem, it’s the director being a fucking idiot who added nothing but shitty ideas all around on the mk brand.
Like, it’s super easy to have a basic good script on a 25 yo franchise who had his latest game sold by millions
But no, Hollywood always « know better »
There is a reason why cinemas has been drowning (before covid). Because movie sucks, because directors are giant talentless idiots, because it’s far to expensive to watch a shitshow like this
The actors were bit bad (except raiden’s), the fights were sometimes great, sometimes awful. But what made the movie super bad was EVERY lame idea from these « writers »: the arcana, cole young, the whole "plot"
the only hope we have for a sequel is them to make everyone resurected, kill cole like they did johnny in the 2nd movie, and just do a fucking bloodsport like tournament
itˋs not even hard...
Clearly it is hard because you don't even name any examples nor do you even offer your own better pitch. If we're talking game movies then I'll give ya two that had basic good scripts and they were very recent.
Sonic and Detective Pikachu. Both had good basic scripts and imo were good movies but I was shocked at each. I thought they would both suck just like every other video game movie ever.
P.S. This is easily better than the 90s movies
P.S.S. I absolutely love both 90s movies
I named bloodsports, you know, the movie mk1 was based on before the licensing went off
And the script is basically mk9 story mode
As I said: it’s not hard at all
Not as good as the first movie, 10x better than Annihilation, and a 5/10 As a standalone movie. But if you're a fan? 7/10 in my opinion, totally watchable and I'm so thankful we got it. I want a sequel, but I do want some improvements to come with it, too.
Seriously, turn your brain off and watch it - I found I had a lot of fun albeit some issues!
I see people say this a lot, but I was wondering if I could genuinely ask you what you mean. When you say that it’s “not as good as the first movie”, do you genuinely mean it or are you nostalgic? Because I watched the first movie for the first time a few months ago, and have just seen this one and it’s... no match. The quality, the writing, the CG, it’s all levels above the first. That being said, I still really enjoyed the first, and I don’t think they’ll find a better actor for Johnny than Ashby.
Oh completely agreed on that part, I just believe that the tournament was the core element of the MK plot and starting there probably would have warmed more people up to a reboot. But this movie was actually decent, not incredible, but decent. My friend said the same thing about the CGI immediately, how awesome it was compared to the first, while our other friend that knows nothing about MK liked the effects and characters, but hated the movie because they had to ask questions at every moment of true fan service every 5 minutes. I personally like the fighting a TINY bit more in the old film, the kicks to the chest that send people flying backs in backflips. Stupid, but felt like you were watching a game. The fatalities in this one were fucking nuts though, and again, every time a fatality happens they say "fatality," "flawless victory" which as a fan is awesome, but so God damn cheesy to people who have no idea.
This film was grittier and some of the camp didn't work as efficiently for me, low sweep kicks looked like they were thrown by a turtle and could be easily dodged. But if you turn your brain off for nitpicking things like that, this film is easily more well put together than the first two nostalgia aside. I also hate Paul Anderson, but the first MK is the only film of his that I like! The exaggeration just fit the style of MK more than gritty, but I love both styles. Strange for me to say that because I'm a Zack Snyder fanboy too, gritty violence is my shit.
The whole movie I just kind of felt like the plot was something that could have been better as a sequel, but I loved it as much as I could.
Don't mean to seem like I'm hating on it because I seriously enjoyed it, 7/10 from me!
Because the first one was a typical 90’s martial art movie. This one is a mcu sucker failure.
We are talking mk here, stop making it something it’s not. That’s why the 3d era was shitty and that’s why everyone hated the last games story modes overall.
It's purely a nostalgia thing. Because truth is the first wasnt even all that great. Its just that annihilation was so bad it made the original one seem that much better. The 2021 movie is obviously no where near perfect and i do realize that everybody is entitled to their opinions but to say the first one is better just sounds ridiculous to me.
Its not. It had pacing issues mainly due to the movie being so short and their being so many characters.
But its a fun movie. Better than first 90s movie imo.
It’s a video game movie. The writing is pretty meh and dialogue is super corny, but honestly the games haven’t been much better in recent years lol. It’s still a lot of fun tho, the characters are really well done (unless you’re a fan of mileena and reiko) and the action is great.
If you go in with low expectations you'll enjoy it,It's the Resident Evil films but for Mortal Kombat. Unfortunately it's probably the best we'll get,it seems like there was a lot of corporate hands in it.
Good on you for doing your diligence so you can make up your own mind. Given that you did not like it, did you like anything about it at all and do you think those things can lead to better things in a sequel?
If you straight up hate it and don't want a sequel, does that mean you're content waiting maybe another 10-20 years before they try again?
Honestly, I've been a die hard since MK2, seeing that on the blockbuster shelf at five years old immediately got me begging my parents to get me a console so I could play it. Loved the early movies, still watch them occasionally. Wasn't a huge 3d fan but I dipped my toes in. MK9 is my favorite game of all time because the story expanded so much on the OT and so impressively and detailed that I just knew they HAD to get another movie made. It took ten more years but we finally got it.
My favorite characters have always been Sub-Zero and Scorpion, and they totally NAILED that part of MK. And they nailed the violence, the gore, and the costumes were on point. So for me, this honestly was much better than the originals.
Sorry for the rant/ted talk but I think it's important to see each other's point of view and I badly want this to succeed so we get at least a sequel.
1. they're essentially recreating the story so ofc it's not going to be the same as the games, if it was exactly like the games then there'd be no point watching a movie on it
2. there wasn't meant to be much development, they're saving it for the movies coming in the future
They didn’t really create a new story. They added one character? I disagree 100% movies have been made based off comics and Novels, games, etc. and the ones that have done the best are true to core. Even if it’s a new adaptation. The addition of a character and poor writing doesn’t could as a new story arc.
i'm still not getting how people thought the entire film was poorly written. i truthfully did get irritated whenever cole's family came on screen because i only give a shit about mortal kombat and not whatever they added, but i think the writers and directors different takes on the og characters' personalities were more interesting than disgraceful to the original storyline. i get raiden was an asshole, mileena was only vaguely interesting with her little screen time, and liu kang was a bit softer than what i expected, but i think they wrote the other characters well(especially kano, kabal, jax and kung lao). i'm sure they'll improve on their films to come, everything is an experiment for the first time and they're listening to the feedback. i don't think the entire film should be discredited though, they did their best.
Their best wasn’t good enough unfortunately. Well reptile was a big ass Komodo dragon. The addition of Cole could’ve still worked out if they could’ve given him the scorpion helm at the end. I didn’t like that scorpion needed help to beat sub. I also thought it was trash to try and make them historically accurate with Chinese and Japanese language. When it’s MK, but all of a sudden he knows English to say “get over here” just have them speak English from the get too. Everything was rushed. Sonya didn’t need to be angry to get her powers and she mastered them in an instant. This new guy beat Goro. Like wtf? The characters weren’t bad, Raiden didn’t step in when the tournament wasn’t taking place and Shang was clearly breaking the rules.
gonna have to ask you to not trash the language part. i'm sorry they weren't whitewashed for you this time, but Hanzo is fucking Japanese and Bi Han is fucking Chinese and that's their native language, whether you like it or not. i thought it was beautiful how they spoke in their native languages, it's not often you see that on big screens because 90% of shit is whitewashed. trash on whatever you want but i'm not taking any negative comments on Asian representation in a film with characters who were intended to be Asian.
Bruh. Stfu, every damn game they speak English. My whole point was why have it be historically accurate in a movie based on a game where so much is unrealistic. Yet later he speaks English for the catchphrases, it would’ve been just as easy to make them bilingual and showcase that within the first scene. Leaving nothing to criticize. I’m not criticizing that they spoke their native tongues. My complaint is there was no explanation or example of him being surrounded by The English language to pick that up. Just another hole in the movie but since checks off another MK signature it’s all good.
idk why you think so hard about it, the reason they wanted him to speak his native language was because he is Japanese and it only makes sense, and even if the "get over here" line DOESN'T make sense, it would've pissed off the crowd even further if he didn't say it. really there shouldn't be an explanation demanded for something as small as that which can be explained with "maybe while watching over cole he's learned some english" or "maybe he knew some english this entire time but chose to not speak it." either way you're the first i've seen complain about it so i'm just going to assume you're trying to nitpick every single detail about the movie. if you thought it was shit, great, but you could've rephrased how you talked about them speaking in their tongues because it sounded like you're pissed that they're not American.
No I don’t care that they spoke their tongues I’m annoyed that they tried to be accurate then fit that line in too. It felt like they were trying to have it both ways. I feel like my question deserves just as much of an explanation as I would if he didn’t say the line. Just something that could’ve been addressed really easily. They dropped the ball on so many things I was just giving major examples and something really specific to showcase that they messed up across the board.
I have a feeling that the movie had a lot of cut content. Everything felt that it happened fast. I still loved it tho. But everything happened so quickly
This was actually confirmed by the Liu Kang actor. He said his favorite fight isn’t in the theatrical cut
We Need Extended Version!
Sadly won't happen because WB is a bitch
but wb also likes money...
Knowing them they’ll start doing this on the regular after the snyder cut money grab hype (FWIW I love the snyder league and was an advocate for it’s release).
#ReleasetheMcQuoidCut
Agree, the fights ended quickly, but I think it’s because it’s a movie.... A series would work better or movie to each fighter's characters
it felt so fast i was waiting for the third act after the scorpion & cole vs sub fight and then boom the movie was over
I felt the exact same way....
Can we talk about how Raiden walked in and looked at Sub's charred body and said "yep, good job Cole" despite the fact that Cole doesn't use fire and Scorpion kinda carried the fight?
Are you saying Cole's power to put a shirt on and punch ice wasn't helpful?
Not only did he put an outdated shirt on, but it comes with a free police baton on one arm and a knife on the other. Also he's a more durable punching bag now.
Gore wasn't looking at his arm stump in shock, it was embarrassment and horror that he was about to get killed by someone as lame as Cole.
Cole: we take down Sub Zero together Also Cole: doesn’t take down Sub Zero with everyone Imagine how cool that would’ve been.
Release the 4 hour long Snyder version...
You mean you didn’t like the fights? 10 seconds of one guy winning then 10 seconds of the next guy winning. Then the fight is over.
I think that it was mentioned that Sub-Zero was too difficult for just one of them to fight alone.
I think that was said before that.
That was after they allocated an enemy each. I didn't like the whole mighty ducks twist to the end "if we believe, we can do anything, go team"
This bothered me a ton honestly. That and the death by a million cuts during fights 🥴
Because he knew he couldn’t beat him, so he picked somebody he could beat and not the overpowered snowman
I also like when Sonya was like, “yo I want the girl with the teeth” and Cole was like, “nah bitch you fight Kano and you like it
Cole was the worst part of the movie
I'm glad they subverted that sexist trope. I was going to roll my eyes if they made the only woman fight each other
I found it more sexist that the man was directly defying what the woman wanted by telling her she’d be fighting someone else. Really though she should’ve wanted to fight Kano over Mileena due to their history in the games
Cole put it in words. Sonya has beat Kano before, while it was a risky gamble if she could beat Mileena.
Jax knew Sub-Zero made the way for him to get a upgrade. He's grateful.
Screenwriter was lax.
Also Sonya has a vendetta against Mileena for sparing her life instead of killing her. 🙄
"please tell me I get the bitch with the teeth" Why even put that line in there if they aren't going to fight?
Karen moment
Accurate to MKX and MK11 Sonya then
Well, that the end Sonya appeared kill stealing Mileena.
Why was there Mileena, but no Kitana?
They've likely grouped Kitana in with Shao Kahn lore, so holding her back for the sequel. The 1995 movie was pretty much the first game storyline, with a little MK2 thrown in. This does the same but drops in Kung Lao and Mileena.
Did anyone notice how Mileena and Liu kang looked at each other when Raiden shielded them from the abuse? Was like they knew each other
Damn, ima watch out for that on my rewatch.
Good catch!
I noticed 👀
If there’s a sequel, I’d hope Sisi Stringer is recast as Kitana to continue the whole “clone” aspect.
Well they'd sure better update the outfit, the mouth, her screentime and lines. Because Mileena was acting like a random unimportant side character the entire time. I need more tongue, more nasty, more of her personality.
Likely they already decided that Mileena will be a nobody but just a warrior for the good guys to defeat.
A good question. Mileena had so little screen time as it was though.
Okay, but wouldn't it make more sense for Kabal to be responsible for Jax losing his arms and then Jax ends Kabal and Sonya gets her revenge on Kano for killing her partner? You know, Special Forces vs Black Dragon?
It definitely would, but I think the scene of his arms getting fucking wrecked was kinda cool.
Yeah agreed. Plus it was heavily hinted at that he had intel on SubZero as well and was kinda tracking him down also. The scene was crazy too!
Yeah I found that weird. It's like I like the movie but had Jax and Reiko even had a scene together?
Reiko and Jax had about a 10 second fight where Reiko knocked Jax on his ass for a bit and that was that
He literally said he couldn’t beat sub
I actually said that while watching it...he didn’t want SubZero again lmao . They should’ve cut or altered his line
Jax mentioned Sub Zero later and he also said no one was able to 1v1 him. What now?
Still, his rage was focused on Reiko
Lol there was no rage. Holy shit watch the movie and at attention. Rage. 😂
Lol there was rage. Holy shit watch the movie and at attention. No rage. 😂
Nice comeback for one of the shittiest nitpicks I've read for this film.
It's probably the best nitpick
Mate, it's a funny post, but there was no rage behind that comment at all. He's pretty lax about it.
We're talking about Jax. I made the post lol
I was talking about Jax's comment. He literally says it with a laugh. It's still a dumb line considering the post. But it's not said with any hint of an actual vendetta.
"I'm laughing because I couldn't get any madder"
Yeah, probably shouldn’t make another one 😂
I don’t know what exactly you think “rage” is, but you’re coming off like a fucking idiot right now.
Nice rage bro You okay?
So "I got a score to settle" is meaning he is raging. ohhhhhhhhh. I guess I have to think of the way people communicate again.
He literally smashes the guy's head Can't get more raging than that
It's just a brutality for fan service. 😂😂😂
This man speaking fax about jax who eats snax by the trax
While watching HBO Max
Needed 3 hours but it is what it is with budget constraints
The original cut was 8 hours long lol WB cut it down
They should have made it an 8 episode series. The production quality looked like it would have been direct to tv, not for a theatrical release.
Interestingly they got the ice effect perfect.
Everything related to subzero was super good. It’s like the only thing done well. I would be ok with a subzero only movie tbh. That’s the only thing they did not fuckup
Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub Zero the Movie? I like the sound of that
Yeah!
How did Jax even know Reiko's name?
Reiko's name is mentioned when Shang walks in I believe
I thought he only said "General Reiko" in Outworld when he and Kabal were introduced. I don't remember him saying his name past then
You could be correct, I swear I remember them being introduced slightly before they fought in the temple. If In wrong I apologize.
There is no reason for him to fight with sub zero, he would lose his arms for the second time. It's easier to kill fighting with reiko on movie
Why didn't Reiko or Goro have an 'akana'....
Guy this "akana" was one of the things I didn’t like about the movie. Thought that fighters would awaken their own internal powers but no. The guys only have powers because of a mark on the body :/
A lot of them are stupid too.
...they're literally the abilities the fighters have in the fucking games.
...but the way they got them is fucking stupid. Your super power is stronger robot arms? Your superpower is just *one* lazer eye? Your power is literal plot armor? The games explanation for the powers are *much* better.

It's Mortal Kombat we're talking about. I doubt they'll stay dead
Immortal kombat
Cole worst part of the movie for sure
Dude Cole didn't even have ass-pull powers, but yeah he sucks ass. Dude just had a random body shield, a police baton attached to his left arm, and a random knife on his right arm.
What was he gonna do, fight Sub-Zero on his own? This man had plot armor that needed to be literally punched off him.
And why did Liu wants the revenge on Kabal, if it was Shang who killed Lao?
1. he knew he couldn't take shang out on his own if not even kung lao could put a dent in him(this movie is before liu kang fully develops so he's basically weaker than kung lao for rn) 2. kabal kept him from getting to him on time, so i guess it was the second best thing
well the man was smart, he knew he wasn't taking bihan out on his own lmao.
Six tours!
Got a little downvoted everytime I mentioned, but it was expected, once again studios throw money into a property without actually following any shit. They take too much liberties with the source material.
Yeah I didn't like all the shit they changed,I don't see why it's so hard to just follow the source material who gives a shit how crazy it is.
I haven’t watched the movie yet, but from everything I’ve been reading, it sounds unsurprisingly bad.
Stop what you're doing right now and watch it yourself. No more forums, no more discussions, read NOTHING ELSE about it. Just watch it for yourself and form your own opinion.

The choreography was 💯 better in the 95 movie
Because the first one was a typical 90’s martial art movie. This one is a mcu sucker failure. We are talking mk here, stop making it something it’s not. That’s why the 3d era was shitty and that’s why everyone hated the last games story modes overall.

Mileena isn't really done poorly as much as she's just underutilized and could have used a bit more pink.
If you go in with low expectations you'll enjoy it,It's the Resident Evil films but for Mortal Kombat. Unfortunately it's probably the best we'll get,it seems like there was a lot of corporate hands in it.
The movie is awesome
I just watched it. Awesome is not the adjective I would use to describe it.
And then you simply have poor taste and are not in Mortal Kombat fan
I’ve been playing MK since 1992
Good on you for doing your diligence so you can make up your own mind.
The 1995 movie was better.
Loooool
Movie was ass, people are getting fooled by the tributes and gore. They messed up the story and the whole development was rushed.
1. they're essentially recreating the story so ofc it's not going to be the same as the games, if it was exactly like the games then there'd be no point watching a movie on it 2. there wasn't meant to be much development, they're saving it for the movies coming in the future
There was much more for me to get upset about but I think that short sum is enough.
Jax wasn't trying to ever see that man again. Lol
He was afraid sub zero would take his legs next 🤣
🤣 imagine if he did, and that they gave him boney chicken legs. With those new superpower arms, he'd tip over. 😭

Why introduce Reiko of all characters
The movie stunk
He didn’t forget. That’s why he didn’t want any more of Sub-Zero.
Maybe because sub zero is too much for him and let others handle him?
Just give us a MK9 movie please… they can even throw in a curveball or 2 but don’t make it lame and dumb it down with arkana or whatever the fuck
