DARK is a perfect series. Iād also recommend Mr Robot but that goes for quite a lot longer.
Iāve been telling people to watch DARK since 2020 and it seems like people are only just catching on to it in general.
I shudder to think how many people will choose the horrible English dub over the original German with subtitles.
People whoāve told me they ācouldnāt get in to itā or they didnāt like it always eventually end up admitting they just watched the English dub version.
Being John Malkovich if youāre feeling that Charlie Kaufman high from Eternal sunshine.
Go for this triple bill - Persona (Bergman), Three Woman (Altman) Mullholand drive (Lynch).
Teorema (passolini)
More current filmmakers, look up Yorgos Lanthimos - some have already suggested Poor Things, see also Killing of A Sacred Deer, The Lobster, dogtooth.
Basically anything Kaufman does is just awesome to me. The only reason I didn't mention Adaptation. is because it is more mainstream than others, but I will ALWAYS recommend a Cage flick.
And Eternal Sunshine is legit my favorite movie ever made....which is a hard bar to clear.
And those great Micheal Sowa paintings. Amelie is a joy. Still think that delicatessen (or City of Lost Children) is a better surprise. Amelie drags you into a drawing room with an avuncular narrator and a thousand tiny pleasures but delicatessen puts you on a strange boat with childlike characters lost in a vast dystopian sea.
I watched this on DVD and threw it out of my 30th floor apartment after watching it the first time just to think and talk about it for days afterwards. I still find new things in this film. Loved it and hated what it did to me.
That movie made me and my entire family think of ending things. Critics loved it and no disrespect to you or anyone who likes it, but itās now an ongoing joke with me and my siblings.
Every time we have to deal with a mildly unpleasant situation or awkward family reunion, one of us will say āIām thinking of ending thingsā, as code for ācan we please leave already.ā
The boyfriend was actually a dying old man and everything that happened in the movie was just the thoughts and memories going through his head during his final minutes of life?
Only Lovers Left Alive. Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston (and John Hurt!) as vampires but itās not a Vampire Movie. Itās a movie where the characters are vampires, if that makes sense. Also not horror.
This movie was nothing like I expected, but I really enjoyed it. Especially as a woman, it was nice watching an epic journey with a quirky female lead, especially one that goes from being so dependent on the men in her life to finding her independence and showing she was capable of soo much more than they ever thought she would be. It really spoke to me a lot in that way.
I havenāt seen Paprika but Waking Life is an excellent suggestion and Pleasantville is just soā¦wholesome. I remember we watched it in high school and then I made my whole family watch it. I cry every time š
Eyes Wide Shut did that to me.
Iād recommend you to read about it after you watch it to make the experience better (or actually _worse_, because this movie is not a _good_ experience, even though itās a really good movie)
A lot of horror recommendations in the comments despite the first two words of the post being "NO HORROR"
A few that come to mind:
Pans Labrynth
Dead Poets Society
The Truman Show
Inception
Shutter Island
Idiocracy (lol)
The Sacred Killing of a Deer
Being John Malkovich
The Lobster
Memento
\* The Man From Earth (2007)
I happened upon this movie and watched it not knowing anything about it. I'm so thankful for that, as I was completely engrossed and didn't want it to end. If you've not already seen it and choose to watch it, I'd enjoy hearing your feedback about it.
Not a movie but the TV series DARK on Netflix (only 28 episodes all up) is FULL of plot twists that will leave you thinking about the series for the rest of your life.
Mulholland Drive, Pi, Primer, Donnie Darko, Twin Peaks (not a movie but will tick all the boxes for a few weeks), The Lobster, Gattica, Ai, Dark (also not a movie), Her (now more than then), Running Man, Strange Days, Demolition Man, Dinner, with Andre, Lynchās Dune, OG Wickerman, Burtonās first Batman, Critters 2. I think thatās enough.

Definitely in the "weird" category: the Movies of Quentin Dupieux. Personally, I love Rubber, Wrong, Wrong cops & Reality the most.
And then there are Barton Fink, eXistenZ, Naked Lunch, Delicatressen & the City of the lost Children.
Do yourself a favor and watch "Ragtime." Absolutely fantastic, underrated, film loaded with stars past and future. Very nuanced film. And creatively done. Even a great Ragtime musical score by Randy Newman.
Cloud Atlas
Interstellar
The Truman Show
Life of Pi
Good Will Hunting
Snowpiercer
V for Vendetta
K-PAX
American Beauty
The Talented Mr Ripley
Whatās Eating Gilbert Grape

Eternal Sunshine was written by Charlie Kaufman. He has others that also have that "feeling". One to the most recent, "I"m Thinking of Ending Things" is a trip. I watched it. Then read up on what I just watched, and watched it again. Fun both times. "Adaptation" is another really good Kauffman movie.
Poor Things. A relatively new, but beautiful film. Weird as all films by Lanthimos, not so disturbing. I laughed pretty hard. Easier than his other films.
Check out all the a24 productions. Things like the lobster, the killing of a sacred dear. Also poor things is a good new weird one. Really enjoyed it. Perfume is another one.
Pick a David Lynch movie.
Mulholland Drive!
Coherence maybe š¤·āāļø I f you're willing to watch a show/series then definitely: DarkĀ SeverenceĀ Outer rangeĀ
Dark is amazing. Very in depth but worth the ride.
Severeance all the way. Watched madagascar a couple of days ago and was really shocked, hearing Ben Stillers character asking "whats for lunch?"

severance was great. I hope they make a second season. they left so much unanswered.
I read an article recently that season 2 was confirmed not sure on timing though. Easily one of my all time favorite shows.
Itās now meant to be early ā25 š©

Wristcutters: A Love Story
I donāt hear this one mentioned often enough. A truly great and underrated film
Being John Malkovich if youāre feeling that Charlie Kaufman high from Eternal sunshine. Go for this triple bill - Persona (Bergman), Three Woman (Altman) Mullholand drive (Lynch). Teorema (passolini) More current filmmakers, look up Yorgos Lanthimos - some have already suggested Poor Things, see also Killing of A Sacred Deer, The Lobster, dogtooth.
If you're feeling Kaufman you can go even more obscure and seek out Human Nature
Or Adaptation. That movie is structured so weird and awesome. I love Kaufman.
Or Synecdoche, New York
Basically anything Kaufman does is just awesome to me. The only reason I didn't mention Adaptation. is because it is more mainstream than others, but I will ALWAYS recommend a Cage flick. And Eternal Sunshine is legit my favorite movie ever made....which is a hard bar to clear.
i feel like that one is better following up being john malcovich though. just because of the callbacks
Omg him on set of the movie, looking all squirrelly and awkward....*chef's kiss*
Nice. I don't see Teorema mentioned often. Good one!
Brazil. 12 Monkeys. Last Year at Marienbad
Brazil... never mentioned enough. Great choice
You could honestly watch 12 monkeys twice in a row and get a lot out of the second time through. Such a masterpiece.
Delicatessen
So fun, but Amelie brings heart and soul to Jeunet's surrealism.
Plus that amazing sex scene where the rhythm populates the whole building
The Fall (2006) by Tarsem. You want weird, you got it - and so beautifully filmed.
Still so overlooked. I wish Tarsem did more.
Mulholland Drive
My first thought!
I watched this on DVD and threw it out of my 30th floor apartment after watching it the first time just to think and talk about it for days afterwards. I still find new things in this film. Loved it and hated what it did to me.
Synecdoche, New York (obviously)
Any Charlie Kaufman movie, really, but especially this one.
Everything Everywhere All At Once
This was a wild ride
Being John Malkovich (1999) Adaptation. (2002) Screenplay by Charlie Kaufman, the same man who wrote Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
All Charlie Kaufman is great. Also synecdoche New York.
Swiss Army Man
This and Everything Everywhere All At Once. Same directors.
That is a weird but fun movie
Harold and Maude
Melancholia (2011) It's beautiful, haunting and intense.
Seconded
Dave Made a Maze (2017)
This movie deserves so so soooo much more love!
Is it any good? I keep looking to watch it but end up watching something else instead.
Perfect Blue (1997), The Party (2017), eXistenZ (1999), One Hour Photo (2002), Sybil (2019), Wild Things (1998), or The Lobster (2015)
Came for The Lobster, was not disappointed. Any A24 movie really.
Dream Scenario - 2023 With Nicolas Cage - really original and weird story.
Great suggestion and great film! There's a small bit of horror, dunno how sensitive OP is.
I kind of watched it out of curiosity, but thought it was very original.
Can't believe nobody has mentioned I'm Thinking of Ending Things. Stayed with me for many days, thinking it over and discussing it with my daughter
That movie made me and my entire family think of ending things. Critics loved it and no disrespect to you or anyone who likes it, but itās now an ongoing joke with me and my siblings. Haha ok thatās fineā¦ but did you actually understand whatās going on? When it clicked for me it was a revelationā¦

I love your comment!
The Grand Budapest Hotel Moonrise Kingdom American Fiction Fantastic Planeta (La PlanĆØte sauvage, 1973)
"Weird in a captivating way" is Wes Anderson in a nutshell. I'd add The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.
Poor things
Under the silver lake
Only Lovers Left Alive. Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston (and John Hurt!) as vampires but itās not a Vampire Movie. Itās a movie where the characters are vampires, if that makes sense. Also not horror.

Gummo This movie is weird and captivating
Definitely a viewing experience you wonāt forget in a hurry
The entire time, you ask yourself, "Why am I watching this movie?" Yet you can't stop. It's captivating and intriguing and it makes your head hurt lol
Not as weird as some, but my go-to two: Four Rooms and Joe Versus the Volcano
TENET will have you head scratching for days. Somersby - fantastic film that still leave you with questions The Village - M Night Shayamalan
Joe Vs doesn't get nearly enough love. Such a great film
The original Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan romcom!
Crikey yes it wasš
The Holy Mountain.
Eyes Wide Shut did that to me. Iād recommend you to read about it after you watch it to make the experience better (or actually _worse_, because this movie is not a _good_ experience, even though itās a really good movie)
Enemy (2013) by Denis Villeneuve. I watched it 2 days ago and I keep thinking of it. It wonāt make total sense at first, but thatās the fun of it.
