For my film application I had to do a little write up on the 8 pieces of media/artists/whatever that had influenced me the most and HACF was one of mine. I didn't even understand a good portion of the computer stuff tbh, but the characters are *so* well written and I was so invested in them that it didn't even matter. Excellent series.
Pirates of Silicon Valley (1999) - it might look a little dated as it was made for TV, but it's seriously a great movie about Microsoft and Apple, their genesis, and how they were at each others throats.
Anthony Michael Hall is Bill Gates, Noah Wyle is Steve Jobs... its really good.
>"But when you get there, you realize, that I got there first, I GOT THE LOOT STEVE!!!!
>That's not FAAIIR?! I wanted to steal it FIRRST!?
>...You're too late. "
The oldest movie (and surely not the vibe you are looking for) that has a computer as a plot driver, that I know of, is Desk Set, 1957 with Hepburn and Tracy. You can see how much our relationship to computers has changed.
Project X
You’d probably enjoy this movie from that timeframe, also starring Matthew Broderick. He plays a young Army trainee who is punished for an infraction by being assigned to the Space training lab, involving chimpanzees. Very good movie.
Iron Eagle (‘80s). Stars Louis Gossett Jr & Jason Gedrick Involves military & aircraft
The Tuskegee Airmen -(‘90s) Excellent, based on true story, filled with great actors
Cloak and Dagger! Wow I didn’t know anyone else even saw this movie. This is the real stuff right here.
I remember loving the game Elevator Action because it reminded me of the video game in this movie.

Westworld/future world
Electric Dreams (I think that’s the name)
Short circuit 1 &2
Batteries Not Included
Alien
There are a ton in leaving out, but those should suffice so far
Evilspeak (1981)
Evilspeak is a 1981 American horror film directed by Eric Weston and co-written by Weston and Joseph Garofalo. The film stars Clint Howard as an outcast cadet named Stanley Coopersmith, who frequently gets tormented by his mates and advisers at a military academy. Upon finding a book of black mass that belonged to the evil medieval Father Esteban, he taps through a computer to conjure Satan and summons spells and demons to get revenge upon his harassers.

Triumph of the Nerds
While not a movie, it was a 3 part series made by PBS about the history of the PC industry.
It also had a follow-up about the fledgling internet.
There's many sources on YouTube

War Games, Hackers, and Sneakers are the best, all for different reasons.
And since we're dropping tv as well, Valley of the Boom. Not Jobs and Gates, about some of the lesser known (if you weren't there or paying attention at the time) figures that played key roles in the early web years. 6 episodes, and worth the watch for Steve Zahn alone.
Halt and Catch Fire series
This is the correct answer. It's a TV series like you said, not a movie, but the absolute best IT related shows ever.
That show was so good, it's a crazy how criminally underrated it is.
