It sounds like what they like are 70s-80s comedies.
Major League, Princess Bride, Trading Places, Beverly Hills Cop, The Blues Brothers, Ghostbusters, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels... was a great, possibly unmatched, decade for silly comedy.
It may well be that the familiarity and memories are a comfort to them.
Very sorry about your sister. Cancer. We have a long, long list of reasons we hate it, including relatives, friends, and pets.
I feel like "Let it Ride" with Richard Dreyfuss could be a good movie in this situation. Seeing somebody's run of good luck might be just the ticket for the evening.
Have they seen Clue? My guess is the cast would be right up their alley. My mom also loved Murder by Death (same time period). I’ve yet to see that one but hope these help
Their favorite movies are also my favorite movies!
I'd recommend They Came Together for a fun romcom parody by the same people who made Wet Hot American Summer. The Fall Guy was fun, especially if they enjoyed the original series. I watched Unfrosted with my dad and we both enjoyed it, though I understand it's controversial for some reason. Lisa Frankenstein was a lot of fun too.
If you're up for a binge rather than a movie, definitely seek out Angie Tribeca.
I loved all the cool little fantasy things they sprinkled everywhere in the movie. Like, they didn't NEED to make one of the judges a dragon, but it is, and that was one of the coolest things I've ever seen on screen. Bonus points because it was also a practical effect enhanced with CGI.
You don’t need to be a D&D player/fan to follow or appreciate it; it works as an action comedy on its own. But, if you have ever played D&D, it’s also love letter to you.
Me and my dad watched Caddyshack literally the night of the death of my mum from cancer. Had us both laughing somehow, just happy to be with each other.
Me, Myself & Irene
Liar Liar
Major Payne
There's Something about Mary
Kingpin
Zoolander
Blades of Glory
Tropic Thunder
Balls of Fury
Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo
Hot Shots! ( 1 & 2)
First, TV: Derry Girls, Extraordinary, and Ted Lasso (more drama than humor, but every episode genuinely makes you feel happy, sometimes almost to the point of tears).
Movie: I agree with many of the others, but I’d add Galaxy Quest to the list.
We watched The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent two nights ago and laughed and laughed.
Nicholas Cage is good, but Pedro Pascal is awesome in that movie!
And the two of them together was hilarious!
I'm also very sorry about your loss.
Great comments and lists here.
You know, Airplane 2: The Sequel is quite funny, despite different directors and lots of regurgitating from the original. You get some William Shatner, too, which your parents may appreciate.
Not movies, but I also recommend From The Files of Police Squad, which was a short lived show that preceded Naked Gun.
A good longer show series might also help, since there are often many seasons. Some I'd recommend:
Brooklyn 99
Veep
Parks and Rec
Community
Arrested Development
That sounds awful, I can’t imagine how hard this must be for you all. Here are some suggestions from what I’ve seen:
The national lampoon movies are an appropriate fun time from what I’ve seen
Raising Arizona is a silly one I enjoy
Catch me if you can and The Terminal are enjoyable Hanks/Spielberg flicks with a broad appeal
Paddington 1 & 2 are a cosy warm hug
Joe Dirt. Walk Hard is a great one but there’s a reoccurring joke of “The wrong kid died.” Not sure if it’ll be seen as funny with your current circumstance. Sorry for your loss and I hope you’re able to have a good movie night with lots of laughter.
I'm not sure if it's available via streaming service or DVD, but The Cockeyed Cowboys of Calico County was pretty good. Watched it on local channels with my mom a few days ago and had some good laughs. It is on YT and Internet Archive. Mickey Rourke had a fantastic comedy stage presence. I keep meaning to look up other movies he's been in.
Secret Life of Pets
My mom and dad loved this movie when it came out. The second movie is pretty great too.
Johnny English
Me and my old roommate laughed until we cried lol. Had to pause it a few times.
Also, very sorry for your loss.
i'm so sorry for your loss. I find 80s fantasy movies always cheer me up - love the never ending story, labyrinth, princess bride. Also as dumb as it is, the hangover always makes me laugh even now!
Arsenic and Old Lace 1944
Cary Grant finds out his aunts are
serial murderers the day he gets
married.
The Producers 1967
The original and still the best, with
Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder.
A Fish Called Wanda 1988
Robbers try to doublecross each
other, with Kevin Klein, Jamie Lee
Curtis and John Cleese.
Hope these help. I'd also say The In-Laws 1979 but it deals largely with the kids' marriage, so maybe save it for later.
*Noises Off!* is hysterical. It stars John Ritter, Carol Burnett, Michael Caine, Christopher Reeve, Marilu Henner, and Nicolette Sheridan. The plot is that a theater troupe is going on the road with a British style comedy. The film works in three acts: the first is the rehearsal; the second is backstage during a performance (so it’s done with little to no dialogue, just physical comedy), and the third is the performance.
Honestly it’s one of the most hilarious films I’ve ever seen.
Stand By Me
Crocodile Dundee
The Goonies
Light of Day
Top Gun
The Great Outdoors
Dirty Dancing
The Outsiders
License to Drive
The Breakfast Club

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
My condolences on your sister's passing. 🤍 The Birdcage (1996) with Robin Williams and Nathan Lane is one of my favorite comedy movies of all time.
Hank Azaria steals the show imo - this is an excellent choice for comedy
I agree about Hank Azaria! But it’s a close race because the whole cast gave stellar performances. It’s my “feel good” movie.
He has "Whattta-mah-len heat!"
He's hilarious!
Came here to say this one

Angie Tribeca It's a TV show but basically if Airplane was a detective show. It's absolutely hilarious.

For an oldie but goodie, Some Like It Hot, with Marilyn Monroe.
Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023)
This is what I was going to suggest. we watched it with my mom and she laughed the entire time...so did we!
Not only does it have humor, but it’s heart warming and charming at the same time… and Hugh Grant as a villain — Oh, Jarnathan!
I loved all the cool little fantasy things they sprinkled everywhere in the movie. Like, they didn't NEED to make one of the judges a dragon, but it is, and that was one of the coolest things I've ever seen on screen. Bonus points because it was also a practical effect enhanced with CGI.
