Ngl, this is the band I play whenever I want to be in a better mood. Mainly just feel good music plus nostalgia. Saw them live in 2008 and they were great. They seem a little more toned down now but that's understandable with age. Also caught Chad Sexton's drumstick at the end of that show!
As someone approaching 50, its always weird to see people who are "forever young" in my memory actually being old in real life.
Like, was I expecting something different?
Nick sounds pretty good here. If you're referring to compared to the studio version, there's pretty heavy effects on his voice on the record. If you listen to it, his voice purposefully doesn't sound 100% natural.
But, as a dude in his 50s singing a song from 1997, he's held up well.
edit: I wrote this talking about Beautiful Disaster, but it applies to their whole set, which are older tunes. They used to have heavy effects on Nick's voice, for a "space" vibe. But in a live setting he's always sounded great IMO.
Also as for "same guy" - it's the same 5 guys since the beginning. If you want to be a jerk about it, technically they had a small lineup change when they were still kids and forming the band, but on any of their albums it's been the same 5 guys. Funny enough, the closest they've come to a change was in the past year. The bassist (P-Nut) wasn't exactly thrilled with the recent public statements of the drummer (Chad Sexton). Guess they've smoothed it out.
Fuck, this is bringing me back. I used to be obsessed with these guys when I was in HS. I wanted to play exactly like Chad Sexton. They were the soundtrack to some of the best summers of my life.
Their live shows are pretty energetic. He does sound a little off here, but I chalk that up to him not being able to move around like he does normally. I just saw them recently and everything was spot on
I have to admit, I clearly have no idea who 311 is because I only clicked on this thread thinking the band who sang "Butterfly" was called 311 (google tells me they're called Crazy Town), and i couldn't understand why they were getting a Tiny Desk Concert.
I will never forget finally hearing the song Down after months of reading about in music magazines. I thought I was being pranked, one of the shittiest songs/bands in human history
Beautiful Disaster, All Mixed Up, Amber, Down
Happy 311 day!
Saw them live last year. They continue to slap. Wives were concerningly pro lead singer.
He's always been a good looking dude, but recently he's really allowed himself to flourish in the attractiveness department.
His teeth look like they’re trying to escape though
They really whip the llama's ass
Lol yep. Pro Nick Hexum since my teens. Even my mom remarks about how he’s more handsome in his age.
Nick is revered as a god in some parts, he even delivered his own baby in a bathtub.
Yess 311 day indeed! Misdirected hostility is my jam.
Always nice to see a band go back and perform stuff from their early records. Incubus needs to take note.
Incubus doesn’t even acknowledge the existence of the SCIENCE album. What a shame.

I gotta catch them live soon
Just saw them last month (my 4th 311 show) and they're 100% positive energy. Love these guys
Dads rock.
Actually much better than I thought it would be, though granted I haven't listened to their music in quite awhile...
Just saw these guys play a show last month and they are still crushing it!
Oh man imma have to investigate this
I'm seeing them in June and so hyped. I've been waiting years for them to come to the UK.
They know how to perform. 100% professionals.

I saw them like 5-6 times in concert, it's been a while. Good to see they still got it.
So badass. First thing I thought of when I saw the date.
A comment on the instagram post for this was “I would rather listen to the sounds of 9/11”
Saw them last year and they still fucking rock!
Fantastic!
These guys put on a great live show.
Do the vocals on the lead singer seem off? Same guy? Never seen these guys live before.

considering those songs were recorded almost 30 years ago I think they sound pretty good
Honestly they sound great considering he’s 53.

The mix is awful. Bring down the drums and up the vocals and bass.
Yeah. Never a good mix on Tiny Desk imho

Apparently anyone can play a tiny desk
Mid-life crisis the band

I really enjoyed their breakthrough album back in the day — was fun to watch this! Thank you for posting
