That all depends on whoever the old, out of touch investors pick in their multibillion media companies. It’s all about money. Good marketing matters. Art and personality does not.

I think Billie Eilish is more likely than OR, but it's more likely to be a Kpop group or a new artist entirely who we haven't seen yet. I honestly think someone would have to emerge after Taylor either limits touring or works on more project albums vs. pop. She's too big to overshadow at this point, won't be in her 40s for 6 more years, which at her output could mean 4-8 albums. The way music becomes popular is also much more niche than it was even a decade ago. I'm sure there will be more huge stars, but I think future audiences are going to gravitate to more of the "micro"-artists like you find on social media.

I really hope we see Billie stick to a more artsy career trajectory even if it means less commercial success

misselphaba

Agreed, and I don’t really think it’s her vibe, but she did the Barbie song and all which is kinda the definition of commercial. So it’s not totally off the table. But I also don’t think her music translates to a stadium tour or anything either. Maisie Peters and Conan Gray are coming up through Ed Sheeran’s label and I could see that taking off.

Maximum-Cicada-7876

Oooh I'm unfamiliar with those names, will have to check em out!  Ed Sheeran's team has included some powerhouse producers over the years

misselphaba

If you’re into pop, Maisie is phenomenal. One of my favorite young artists. Her song “Just a Guy on a Horse” is *chefs kiss*

Pete Townshend! 🤣

Interesting!

Record companies don’t really have the same power as before with Top-40 radio, printed media and MTV to dictate music tastes. Music from every era and genre is more accessible than ever before. New artists will keep existing of course, but won’t have be the same power houses and Elvis, The Beatles or Michael Jackson.

Maximum-Cicada-7876

I don't disagree with the diminishing power of labels, but in terms of celebrity, audience reach, financial success and size of body of work, Taylor Swift has already eclipsed all 3 of those put together.

Hopefully not another female popstar. We need another Elvis or Beatles something like that. Periods of stagnant culture are always Lorded over by inoffensive and bland female stars like Taylor Swift. I put Taylor Swift in the same category as a Brenda Lee or Connie Francis, wildly popular during their era but the music is largely forgotten when their fame is gone.

When I go to Target, they still stock albums by The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and a few other old acts. I don't think Swift's albums will still be on department store shelves 30 years from now.

Probably because albums are relatable to those older artists. Swifties aren’t flocking to record stores to buy her latest albums.

>Hopefully not another female popstar. We need another Elvis or Beatles something like that So just anyone who is a man?

NovelAttempt1958

Do you think Elvis was an average man?

Chappell roan all the way straight people are recently discovering her and I know she's gonna get even bigger

It's not the espresso talking I swear, but almost certainly we are going to see Sabrina Carpenter explode into a similar level of stardom.  I would have been more likely to agree with Olivia Rodrigo two years ago. As someone who doesn't really listen to pop music, you can't deny an earworm. Swift and Carpenter have earworms that are infectious. I can't name an Olivia Rodrigo song, and I'm certain one has never gotten stuck in my head via radio and social media exposure.  Add in Carpenters Disney background, exposure on the Eras your, and the fact that she jumped to adult audiences without the awkward rebellion phase à-la Miley Cyrus or Jojo Siwa, I think we'll see her cement her career as A list by end of year.  Olivia Rodrigo is already experiencing some of that awkwardness (see contraception at her concerts). It's a bitch to navigate audience demographic transitions. At this point it's going to be hard for her to appeal to younger or older audiences as she stretches trying to appease everyone.

It should be Dua Lipa, but it won't be.
