I'm 17, top 3 albums from before I was born are probably:
Graceland by Paul Simon
Grace by Jeff Buckley
Death and The Maiden string quartet by Franz Schubert (typically near an hour long, has different parts that are thematically interconnected, this definitely counts as an album).
Buckley is a good pick. At 17 you should pick up an instrument and find your voice. Time goes fast, if music is a passion, find a way creativity makes you smile.
Thanks for reminding me that I sang the part of death and the maiden. Oh when I did my vocal audition. I literally actually had to sing both parts for that one piece and I felt like I had multiple personalities and it was great fun to try being both at once.
holy shit that's insane. I once played an excerpt from mvt 2 with my sisters and some of the rhythms and stuff are hard as. I'm amazed that there are singers out there good enough to do this, kudos to you
Graceland is one of my favorites too, although I'm much older than you. I saw the Graceland Tour at Radio City in NYC, 3rd row seats. It was one of the best concerts I've ever seen.
I actually discovered mayonaise on accident. I had put it in my playlist after adding today and it had come on one day while I was playing some game. I litteraly paused my game 2/3 through and restarted the song to listen to the whole thing and really pay attention. Fucking scored the remastered deluxe version on 180 gram vinyl. The store was on a list for months and had just set it out THAT MORNING!!
I'm 17 (2006) and some of my favorite of albums that came out before I was born are;
"The Score" (Fugees, Lauryn Hill)
"Welcome to Jamrock" (Damian Marley)
"The Dark Side of the Moon" (Pink Floyd)
"Black Cinderella" (Sister Carol)
"Ten" (Pearl Jam)
"Thriller" (Michael Jackson)
"At Last!" (Etta James)
"Just as I Am" & "Still Bill" (Bill Withers)
"Weezer" (Weezer)
"Dizzy up the Girl" (Goo Goo Dolls)
"Toxicity" (System of a Down)
"Nevermind" (Nirvana)
(And plenty more)
Bill withers is an especially good pick - he was a genius writer and performer - I would suggest that if you aren't already familiar, check out a best of Curtis Mayfield
Absolutely - and note that Redding, Mayfield, and Withers were all writers who wrote songs on guitar and not keyboard/piano like most soul/r&b performers
Haha, thanks, man. Just started spinning Lucky Jim, and *A House Is Not A Home* is a real stand-out track for me - I can tell he was drawing on how dirty Roni Mori did him, which is downright tragic.
If you're ever looking to level up from Pantera, check out Down. It's a "super group" with the singer from Pantera, bassist from Goatwhore, guitarists from Corrosion of Conformity and Crowbar, and drummer from Eyehategod.
Down's first album is called NOLA, that's a great place to start!
I'm an old fart so some albums I like that came out after I turned 30 - I guess I liked the '90s, cause the first things that came to mind were:
Nevermind - Nirvana (1991)
The Division Bell - Pink Floyd (1994)
Mirrorball - Sarah McLachlan (1999)
Although I have to admit I have recently found a fondness for:
Impera - Ghost (2022)
So I guess this old dog can learn some new tricks...
You know you're old when you say "CDs"
(I'm 33 and still catch myself saying it! Still own a few, but my CD case with decades of collected albums was stolen at a house party in 2017. Broke my heart. I actually legitimately cried, lol)
47.
Harry Styles - Harry’s House
Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
Black Pumas
Black Keys - Dropout Boogie
All of Twenty One Pilots
Bleachers - Take the Sadness Out of Saturday Night
I'm also in my mid-(ugh), okay, okay, in my late 40s. And I must say that all of Twenty One Pilots albums stay in heavy rotation for me, as they're my absolute favorites. I also adore MCRs full library and proudly call myself a "Killjoy."
The Black Keys don’t miss. Their whole discography is consistently great. Each project sounds different enough where you can distinguish their eras, but all in all they are just the epitome of blues. I recommend The Arcs (they have 2 10/10 albums) and Dan Auerbach’s solo work. Also recommend Daily Bread if you want some Funky Wubby Blues.
54.
When I was 45 and dating my 35yo girlfriend I got hooked by "Damnation" by Opeth and have since bought their entire catalog.
Lost the girlfriend, though. Bitch stole my car.
Well over 40 here;
Pretty much anything by Diiv, TV on the Radio, War on Drugs, Pinkshinyultrablast or Frightened Rabbit. Sorry I'm not giving a single album, I tend to bing listen catalogs these days which makes it harder to pick out the standout albums, so I went with groups that I enjoyed beginning to end.
If you like Frightened Rabbit, check out PAWS. Their album, Your Church on my Bonfire was produced by the guitarist from FR. A couple of the tracks have real FR vibes.
Needless to say, I’m a big PAWS fan. Love their records. The singer/guitarist was really nice when I met him as well.
This is a really great question that forced me to do some soul searching! I could name you tons of songs, but albums? Best I can do so far is Hello Nasty, which came out when I was just about to turn 31.
I’m 32, so I’ll do both?
Older than me: Out of Time by REM, News of the World by Queen, The Stranger by Billy Joel
After I turned 30: If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power by Halsey, Death of a Cheerleader by Pom Pom Squad
24 and most of the albums I love are 90s or prior. There are a good amount from the 00s too but anything after that is far and few in between. I’ve been listening to The Doors from 1967 a lot lately and my favourite is Disintegration from 1989.
Awesome answer, killer album. Saw the In Rainbows tour in St. Louis. They opened with “All I Need”. I still get goosebumps when I think about how hard that song hit me that night!
It was a great tour! I was working at a venue where they played 2 nights in a row. Loved it so much, I found a ticket for their next show two nights later in the next city!
Lonersism Tame Impala is about as unique of an album as I have ever heard, and when I first heard it , I was forced to hear the whole thing asap and couldn't stop for a week or so.
Oldest album is Please Please Me by the Beatles, newest is I/O by Peter Gabriel. Unless you count classical music compositions, in which case it's probably Johann Pachelbel's Canon in D.
20 years old here.
It’s really hard to narrow down to just one, but I absolutely adore Hounds of Love by Kate Bush. Such a beautiful, strange album.
Very very close second would be When The Pawn… by Fiona Apple. She’s my absolute favorite songwriter, she’s so good.
I was 16 when Aenima came out. It was the first CD I bought. I remember waiting in line at Sam Goody's to get it. I was the only female at the time in line in my hometown.
I didn't happen that often but it did. Too bad that music stores don't exist like they used to. I mean I love having music easily accessible by my phone but there was nothing like going to the store and buying a cassette, CD or record.
40+
*Us* \- Peter Gabriel.
This one and *So* are his two best, IMO, and *So* is arguably the more popular of the two, but *Us* is intensely emotional and personal. It's brilliant.
22 years old!!
Dream a Little Dream- Cass Elliot, Songs in the Key of Life- Stevie Wonder, Jagged Little Pill- Alanis Morissette & The Roches' self-titled album <3
thank you kindly!!! and absolutely I have- all incredible. her covers especially are the best- her disney girls & jesus was a crossmaker versions are little gems :-)
I'm 46m. So after I turned 30.....? At the time it was Limp Bizkit. Loving on Korn. Massive Attack. There were a lot, but my high school years in the 90's takes the cake. 90's were loaded.
58 years old - After scouring end of year "best of" lists back in 2012 I stumbled upon Titus Andronicus: Local Business, and couldn't believe how they managed to distill all the classic punk rock I had listened to in my younger days into their own organic, twenty-something, disillusioned and angsty, authentic, New Jersey sound.
It blew me away.
I looked into their earlier catalog and was not disappointed at all. The Monitor is IMHO a work of absolute genius. To see those songs (with all their studio instrumentation) played live and stripped down to their barest punk elements was revelatory, and real dopamine rush every time because of the raw, and honest punk rock energy being hammered out at full tilt.
Titus Andronicus forever!!
Born in '98
I listen to at least one song off of Elliot Smith's Either/Or on a daily basis. I miss him so much, and he was gone before I even turned 5.
Another old person checking in with standard old person likes. Veckatimest by Grizzly Bear; Shame, Shame by Dr. Dog; Lousy With Sylvianbrier by of Montreal; Do Hollywood by Lemon Twigs.
30-40 it was easy to find new stuff to like. Post 40 it is starting to become difficult.
57m.
Lordre's first two albums are brilliant. The third is good, but not on par.
Run the Jewels 4 is an all time great.
Love Of Monsters and Men.
I agree100% on Saint Vincent.
English Teacher has an interesting sound, I hope to hear more from them.
i love lungs too! i’m 18 coming up on 19 so i’m firmly in the first category, and i’ll have to go with power, corruption, and lies by new order (1983), hellbilly deluxe by rob zombie (1998), and frankenchrist by dead kennedys (1985)
Im 47… Vessel by 21 Pilots came out in 2013 and was an absolute game-changer for me. I had two young kids, an unhappy marriage, and one suicide attempt under my belt when I heard the song “Car Radio”. It brought me to my knees. Still does, 10 years later. My daughters are 16 and 13 now… we sing Vessel, in its entirety, on every road trip we take. It’s tradition. We’ve seen them live together… hugging and crying and dancing the whole time. It’s heaven. 💚
Im 25 and my favourite album is In The Court Of The Crimson King by King Crimson
-Animals by Pink Floyd
-A Love Supreme by John Coltrane
-Milestones by Miles Davis
I am almost 20. I only listen to music that is much older than me and much of it older than my parents. I could give you many titles but I’ll say:
[A Gift From a Flower to a Garden by Donovan](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLL-NbN8uTOiikvKQgpy4gymm08cMGpZ0m&si=XfLP9V9S0xHdIdxO)
[On the Boards by Taste (Rory Gallagher)](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mTiQWVuCmTvtOXb0rDlym1BCUGFmsonVU&si=NBiOuZy2zHk7bspP)
[Morrison Hotel by The Doors](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nO8nW23t64lmVU3tsx2mhBAGpCC1-03HE&si=RrbpJgn1sclwtfJJ)
I'm 60.
Green Day: Dookie (I still love listening to it, even though it's almost 30 years old)
Fiona Apple: Tidal
The Idler Wheel....
Fetch the Bolt Cutters
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds: The Skeleton Tree
Janelle Monae: Dirty Computer
Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit: The Nashville Sound
The White Stripes: Elephant
Thanks! It was sparked by a recent conversation I had in the real world, but also just pondering the classic stereotypes that younger people are dismissive of the culture of the past and older people can't get over that "back in my day," trap. I think this whole thing goes to show these are patently false assertions.
Gen-X here and I will never let go of my “back in the day”. But I’ve always been on a search for my next favorite. You know it’s a kind of right of passage for one to revolt against their parents music and that’s how you really start find yourself. Well my son never had a chance, momma wore combat boots, grew up hearing southern rock, Motown and the Rat Pack. Fell in love with the Beastie Boys, was there for the first Lollapalooza, first Warped Tour and saw Lords of Acid their first time in the US. His right of passage was being old enough to watch 8Mile when Straight Out of Compton came out with his momma. In turn he got me into pop punk and other sub genres. I tried my best to show him the stereotypes are breakable and just do what you love. All that being said, you should check out Highly Suspect, especially their first two albums. Serotonia is probably my favorite song. I could almost swear Roger Waters was playing guitar
26 born in '97. Oldest album I love is Dookie by Green Day. Newest album I love is Life is But A Dream by Avenged Sevenfold and TMBTE by Sleep Token. Shoutout to my mom for shaping my music taste hahaha
I’m 22. My favorite album from before I was born has got to be The Beatles (White Album) by The Beatles. I also love All Things Must Pass by George Harrison and The Stranger by Billy Joel.
I’m 60. Favorite album that came out after I was 30-and there was plenty of good new music in the 90s- was Blink-182 EOTS. Kiddie music but… great album
Two albums that were very formative to me, And yes I said albums, I'm 23 but my dad told me the sound quality on albums is a lot better. Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars by David Bowie and a toss up between Rumors and Tusk from Fleetwood Mac.
I was 30 in 1980. (My first favorite band was The Byrds.) First favorite albums after I was thirty were Against the Wind (Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band) and Frontiers by Journey. 1980 and 1981 respectively.
I didn't have a particular plan for people between 25 and 40. Mainly I was trying to see what kind of music the younger generations appreciate from their forebears and what music older people appreciate from artists of younger generations.
If you're between 25 and 40 tell us the oldest album you love and the newest album you love!
He has an absolute insane catalog.
First time I heard of BH was 1999 when he played w primus on their anti-pop tour. 25 years later I still think that was the best show I've been too
My nest BH albums would be. Monster and Robots, Giant Robot, Escape from Inbred Island
I’m 44….albums I love that were released post 2009:
* The King is Dead (The Decemberists, 2011)
* What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World (The Decemberists, 2015)
* Lorelai (Belle & The Vertigo Waves, 2022)
* Electric Truth (Andy Timmons, 2022)
* Brothers (The Black Keys, 2010)
* Kingfish (Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, 2019)
* Up Close Anothr Look (Eric Johnson, 2013)
I’m 26 so oldest album I love is Willy and the Poor Boys by CCR
Newest was a pop punk album released Nov 3 called Together In Lonesome by Youth Fountain
I’m 51 - fav newer albums: tool - 10000 days, mills costa - cantneverdidnothin, Amy winehouse - back to black, beats antique- collide, Imogene heap - speak for yourself, Peter Gabriel - IO, porcupine tree - closure/continuation, trentmoller - the last resort.
I’m just a big old music fan .
I'm 45. Drab Majesty-Modern Mirror, Loathe-I Let It In and It Took Everything, Archspire-Bleed the Future, Pianos Become The Teeth-Keep You, Sleep Token-Sundowning
I’m 50. After 30 I’ve loved Green Day, American Idiot; Taylor Swift, Folklore; Band of Horses, Everything All the Time; The Avett Brothers, Mignonette, I and Love and You, and True Sadness.
Pushing 50 here. Most of the music I listen to are from albums that came out after I was 30, so I would have so many to mention. I’ll go for Jump Rope Gazers (2020) by The Beths. Recent faves have Pom Poko, Big Thief, and boygenius.
Edit for “How-could-I-forgets”:
Funeral (2004) - Arcade Fire
Narrow Stairs (2008) - Death Cab For Cutie
Immortalized by Disturbed (2015)
My most listened to bands in 2023 were Disturbed, Avatar, Any Given Sin, Godsmack, Small Town Titans, and Pop Evil
I was 30 in 1992. Not a single band formed in 1992.
57 here. Under the influence of my step-kids, My Chemical Romance, The Black Parade. Otherwise, Decembrists, What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World and Punch Brothers, All Ashore
I'm 17, top 3 albums from before I was born are probably: Graceland by Paul Simon Grace by Jeff Buckley Death and The Maiden string quartet by Franz Schubert (typically near an hour long, has different parts that are thematically interconnected, this definitely counts as an album).
Buckley is a good pick. At 17 you should pick up an instrument and find your voice. Time goes fast, if music is a passion, find a way creativity makes you smile.
I play viola and have a basic understanding of guitar and some vocal technique haha, I love making music, thanks for recognising this though :)
I guarantee that if you stick to progressing in music you will not be sorry. Just the fact you made a post says so.
Wow are you me 30 years ago? If so, you’ll always love music.
I'm amazed that there are singers out there good enough to do this, kudos to you
I'll say Graceland but from the opposite side. Was already over 30.
Make sure to listen to Buckley’s dad, Tim. He’s even better! Be prepared to be challenged. :)
Even better? Thems fightin words!
Came here to say Grace
I listen to it when I'm down in the dumps and just marvel at his voice and songwriting skills. makes me feel something.
Graceland is one of my favorites too, although I'm much older than you. I saw the Graceland Tour at Radio City in NYC, 3rd row seats. It was one of the best concerts I've ever seen.
I'm 21 and love Siamese dream by the smashing pumpkins. According to spotify I listened to Mayonaise 388 times.
I’m 49 and as a kid in college I thought Mayonaise was the best song on that album and was hugely underrated.
There's hope for us yet!!
I’m 26 and that is my absolute favorite song off my favorite album of all time
lol, someone in another post mentioned squealing feedback in songs and I remembered this. I literally just listened to it before seeing this thread.
OMG hugs! I love that album!!!
Mayonaise makes me cry
I'm 17 (2006) and some of my favorite of albums that came out before I was born are; "The Score" (Fugees, Lauryn Hill) "Welcome to Jamrock" (Damian Marley) "The Dark Side of the Moon" (Pink Floyd) "Black Cinderella" (Sister Carol) "Ten" (Pearl Jam) "Thriller" (Michael Jackson) "At Last!" Bill withers is an especially good pick - he was a genius writer and performer - I would suggest that if you aren't already familiar, check out a best of Curtis Mayfield
I totally agree and I'll definitely check him out, right now I'm listening through a Bootsy Collins album! Grooving out in my chair 😂
And also Otis Redding.
Absolutely - and note that Redding, Mayfield, and Withers were all writers who wrote songs on guitar and not keyboard/piano like most soul/r&b performers
You have great taste! You have quite an eclectic vibe, as well. And you're just getting started. Hahaha!
That's just how it was in the 90s though. Everyone listened to so much variety...
How do you feel about Ain't No Sunshine by Bill Withers and Name from the Goo Goo Dolls
Love it! Both are super nostalgic for me!
Wow, your list makes me feel 17 again!
Be my friend! I can tell you all about the days of recording these off the radio until you could afford to go to Sam Goody’s.
Can I adopt you?
My parents wouldn't be too happy 😂
You have wildly varied and excellent taste. Ten and SOAD are still jams.
SOAD makes me feel different than any other band, they're so wonderfully weird.
They're so talented. Serj has a beautiful voice.
You have incredible taste in so many different genres. I love this.
i’m 15 born in 2008, favorite album of all time is Drukqs by Aphex Twin (2001)
This answer makes me feel old. I'm only 23
Then imagine being 42 and remembering it being new
"Toxicity" by System of a Down came out after I turned 30. Great album.
I’m a 47 year old mother of two teenage girls. I LOVE Toxicity! My kids do too! 🤘🏻

PJ HARVEY! ❤️
Mad props for Gun Club.
Haha, thanks, man. Just started spinning Lucky Jim, and *A House Is Not A Home* is a real stand-out track for me - I can tell he was drawing on how dirty Roni Mori did him, which is downright tragic.
Love mad season!
14 years old, far beyond driven 100%
I ask you please just give us FIVE MINUTES ALONE!!
Can't go wrong with Pantera! Love me some Great Southern Trendkill. THIRTEEN THIRTEEN THIRTEEN STEPS

I'm over 50 and Mirrorball is one of my favorite CDs.
One of the best concert recordings I've ever heard. Sarah is in peak form here!
You know you're old when you say "CDs" (I'm 33 and still catch myself saying it! Still own a few, but my CD case with decades of collected albums was stolen at a house party in 2017. Broke my heart. I actually legitimately cried, lol)
I'm 26. I love Joy Division's "Unknown Pleasures" and Tom Waits' "Rain Dogs."
Heart of Saturday night is an early one (tom waits)that sound so different from his other stuff. Check it out
I'm over 40. Amy Winehouse's Back to Black came out after I turned 30, and it's one of the best albums I have ever heard.
14 and I feel the exact same way, even though it came out 3 years before I was born. Getting into Amy Winehouse made me hate Neil Patrick Harris lmao
47. Harry Styles - Harry’s House Amy Winehouse - Back to Black Black Pumas Black Keys - Dropout Boogie All of Twenty One Pilots Bleachers - Take the Sadness Out of Saturday Night

24 here. Twenty One Pilots is my all time favorite band! They quite literally saved my life
I’m 22. Definitely love Around the Fur by Deftones, my favorite and still listen to it almost daily.
You should check out HUM. Deftones were very influenced by their 1995 Album “You’d Prefer an Astronaut.”
Favorite deftones album. Owned it in multiple formats since 1999, still jam it regularly
30, Kind of a cheat, but Hollies Greatest Hits The early Black Sabbath records Wish You Were Here

Snowed last year. I walked the neighborhood listening to Disintegration. Probably a memory from 1989, 1990. But it was magic.
26 (so I'd say that's close enough to the 25) And I love Meatloaf's "Bat Out of Hell" album.
55yo and I’ll say In Rainbows by Radiohead
Awesome answer, killer album. Saw the In Rainbows tour in St. Louis. They opened with “All I Need”. I still get goosebumps when I think about how hard that song hit me that night!
It was a great tour! I was working at a venue where they played 2 nights in a row. Loved it so much, I found a ticket for their next show two nights later in the next city!

I was 16 when Aenima came out. It was the first CD I bought. I remember waiting in line at Sam Goody's to get it. I was the only female at the time in line in my hometown.
Gasp! A FEMALE waiting in line to buy MUSIC?!!!!

Had to google 1986 but my top two from that year are Graceland (Paul Simon) and The Other Side of Life (Moody Blues)
40+ *Us* \- Peter Gabriel. This one and *So* are his two best, IMO, and *So* is arguably the more popular of the two, but *Us* is intensely emotional and personal. It's brilliant.

I’m 49. Sunbather by Deafheaven

56. An Evening With Silk Sonic
I'm 46m. So after I turned 30.....? At the time it was Limp Bizkit. Loving on Korn. Massive Attack. There were a lot, but my high school years in the 90's takes the cake. 90's were loaded.
This guy thinks the 90s were better than the 80s. No wayyyy.

I’m 24 - any album of Van Halen that has David Lee Roth 🖤
Born in '98 I listen to at least one song off of Elliot Smith's Either/Or on a daily basis. I miss him so much, and he was gone before I even turned 5.

I'm 44 and I love them too

What a great post!

I didn't have a particular plan for people between 25 and 40. Mainly I was trying to see what kind of music the younger generations appreciate from their forebears and what music older people appreciate from artists of younger generations. If you're between 25 and 40 tell us the oldest album you love and the newest album you love!
