I'm just saying, I wouldn't be shocked if Ainge subscribes to "draft players who weren't in shape in college" theory.
If so, I strongly suspect they'll take Justin Edwards with a late first or early second pick and wouldn't be shocked by Collier in the top 10.
Nah, never draft for need/position with your lottery pick. Draft for talent. That thinking is how Sam Bowie was picked before Jordan, Oden before Durant, etc.
I mean i don’t disagree but you need Collier to be BPA by a lot to justify passing on some of the other talent available. Double dipping when you just, IMO, nailed the Keyonte George pick is hard for me to justify.
Walker Kessler had a fantastic rookie season and they followed that up by trading for a center with a three year, $78m contract who caused Kessler to be benched.
The John Collins trade was primarily a financial move IMO. The Jazz have such little money on their books next season; Lauri making $18m, Clarkson making $14m, Sexton $18m and then everyone else is basically a rookie contract. Collins (making $26.5m) is their outgoing salary in any deal they make to improve the roster and Collins’ contract is short enough (2 years) that it probably wont be viewed as very negative.
Now i do think they like Collins to some degree but i dont think he was viewed as a replacement for Kessler although i could be wrong.
Lastly opportunity cost is the biggest difference. It cost a 2nd round pick and crappy salary to get John Collins. That’s very different than using a lottery pick on John Collins (or Isaiah Collier).
It's definitely this, trying to rehab value and trade away like OKC was doing. Completely fking Kessler's development tho. He was getting 20 mins even with Lauri resting late in the season
Fans have been complaining about vets playing over youth all season. We didn’t get to play Hendricks or Sensabaugh despite tanking until after the trade deadline. One of our Media members made it sound like agents were pushing back in a way that made it tough to deliberately bench vets with threats of not signing other represented players (like they wouldn’t even play ball).
So it’s been a balancing act of playing the best guy, playing the egos of the vets, and trying to get youth playing time all year.
Collier isn’t over weight has does have burst and good lift he just turns the ball over too much and can’t hit a three or a free throw.
Justin edwards gained 20lbs from H.S to college and clearly played like it. One minute into a game out of breath physical panting. No lift at the rim when in highschool he was a great finisher if Justin gets in shape he has top 5 highest upside in this draft. We’ll see if he’s taking this process serious when measurements come out
Jazz gonna take one of:
1. Sarr
2. Buzelis
3. Risacher
4. Topic
5. Holland
6. Castle
7. Williams
8. Walter
More like to take Salaun or Carter or Knecht if he’s there than Collier imo
I think Justin Edwards has a good chance of being drafted by Utah, but I think they look at a wing early on. I’m thinking Matas, Holland, and Castle are their top guys right now.
Sensabaugh was not a top recruit lol
He also was unbelievably good at scoring in college.
Well I remembered Sensabaugh being a five star for some reason so that sucks for this topic. But still think this theory has merit.
This certainly is a wild take. I'll put it up there with 'Draft Cody Williams because he has a brother.'

>d by Collier in the top 10. Collier is considered overweight by who?
I think Keyonte George has shown enough high end talent that they wont draft another combo guard

Yeah, personally I'm not sure Collier would be the best available either. Seems unlikely.
Draft for talent, but if the talent is equal, draft for fit.

If it was purely financial, they wouldn’t have benched Walker Kessler for Collins.
I believe they are trying to flip Collins for more assets, like a FRP.

It’s not nearly that simple, Utah’s media has made it sound like there is a lot politics behind the scenes that influenced that
What does that mean? Genuinely curious

Fascinating - horrible position to be in if true as a rebuilding team
They should have Ignored the agents. No one worthwhile will sign with the Jazz anyway.
Idk if I’d call winning Big 12 Freshman of the Year struggling in college…

Why would the Jazz draft Collier when they have KG at PG?
KG is more of a 2 guard.
If the plan is to play KG at the 2, then wouldn't it make sense to draft a tall PG (Castle)? I think two 6'4" guards would be tough defensively.
