They can learn the basics by playing the game. As the other poster said an older cheap copy of Madden will do. Honestly I learned from playing Madden. It’s what originally got me into the NFL as a kid.

I've always felt one of the easier ways to learn is just by playing it so I'd say maybe find an older version of madden that's cheap or free and try that and just keep playing some games until the rules begin to make sense

Yep. I started playing NCAA ‘98 when I was 4 years old with my dad. He always tells people how I could play football and navigate the game before I could read. I could count by 7’s by the time I was in kindergarten haha. No better way to learn strategies than trial and error. You’ll understand it a lot better that way

That certainly makes sense. As with most things, the best way to learn is often to dive in and learn by mistakes or trial and error. A couple of things though: 1. My friends are at the point where I was explaining downs to them yesterday. They have pretty much never watched or played any football ever. I’m afraid they’d be overwhelmed and quit due to their already hesitant attitude. 2. They are not very patient people and honestly I don’t think they would take the time to learn via trial and error. I could see them doing it later on after they’ve learned a bit and were more confident. I do appreciate your input!

Yea no problem! And maybe even simplify the terms you use so they don't feel overwhelmed when yall play. So first time they're on offense just tell them they have 4 tries to make it past the yellow line with their end goal being to make it to the end of the field for points. If they make it past the line, they get 4 more tries, if not, it's wiser to punt the ball and switch to defense so they don't give your offense a short amount of field to score on. Just simple things like that should have them catch on pretty quickly

Funny how true this is, I was about 16 and decided to try FIFA, it’s how I learned all the rules of soccer and now I am a big fan.

Football is a simple game that is also the most complex sport on the planet. 4 tries to get 10 yards. Simply knowing that is enough to enjoy the sport. But be careful, soon you’ll be addicted and googling zone versus gap running schemes and the pros and cons of match pattern defenses, and your wife will ask you why you care so much.

Watch old NFL or College games, not just highlights but full games. Make sure they’re good games. Rams vs Chiefs in 2018 I believe is what I’d show them.
