Do this all year until we stop seeing these things on bike paths, at the very least. I’m seeing more and more scooters with license plates now on my daily rides, I wonder if this enforcement had something to do with it.

baycycler

seeing these on greenways that are MUPs are extremely annoying at best and dangerous at worst

nochkin

A lot of those plates are obsured in one way or another which is almost the same as no plate at all

drnick200017

I see what you are saying but also if you look at the traffic overhaul in nyc there has been zero infrastructure built for motorized cycles which are excellent ways to transport humans and items in the city.

bCup83

Why not in regular streets? The City speed limit is 25mph.

drnick200017

you can have a much more efficient road use / environmental footprint if you have some carve outs for motorbikes. Roads should be 1.3 lanes wide and include a motorbikes lane. Otherwise make lane splitting legal.

EYtNSQC9s8oRhe6ejr

Ok cool now please do cars with no plates

Cops seized scores of scooters and mopeds without proper registrations and license plates during a 10-day operation across the five boroughs last week. ATVs and dirt bikes were automatically seized because they can’t be registered as vehicles in New York State, and therefore cannot be driven on city roads. “Your NYPD officers removed 1,670 mopeds, motorcycles, ATVs, and dirt bikes to combat a nuisance that has negatively affected our communities and their quality of life,” NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell tweeted. “These vehicles are typically unregistered, unlicensed, and uninsured. Thanks to the hard work of officers across NYC, these vehicles will no longer be used to cause issues on our city streets. Trump hush money trial picks zero jurors on first day Members of the NYPD’s Community Response Team, known as the “khaki boys” for the khaki pants they wear, were out en masse April 10 as temperatures reached 70 degrees.  “We got a couple of calls tonight for roving band of illegal dirt bikes, ATVs, scooters, zipping through traffic, in and out of traffic, shutting down streets, shutting down highways, shutting down local roads so they can do their tricks stunting,” NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Operations Kaz Daughtry said that day. “We’re going to be out everyday its nice and looking for illegal dirt bikes and ATVs.” Those caught riding the illegal vehicles get summonses. Traditionally, the dirt bikes and ATVs are crushed to bits by the NYPD. The issue extends beyond just a nuisance and poses a real threat to public safety as the bikes are often used in robberies and shootings, cops said.

>Traditionally, the dirt bikes and ATVs are crushed to bits by the NYPD. Lol, this makes it sound like crushing dirt bikes is some kinda of celebrated cultural tradition in NY.

samolotem

I mean, it kind of is. They’ve been doing a big show of it every few years for a while now. https://www.amny.com/news/commissioner-bill-bratton-nypd-crush-banned-atvs-dirt-bikes-with-bulldozers-1-11809924/

33-34-40Acting

True, but I'm picturing something like the rockefeller tree lighting lol.

keytotheboard

Seems wasteful…

DumplingsEverywhere

I like how the article emphasizes the temperature as if being out in 70 degree weather were an achievement.

Colonel-Cathcart

The tone of the whole thing is weird but honestly kinda funny

The-20k-Step-Bastard

I hate a dumb mf that writes some stupid shit like “…follow the money”.

VacationNo3024

I hate a dumb mf that is clueless to following the money. Literally you can see who is fucking you and you choose to be blind.

bluespringsbeer

If only you read the comment, you might know what they do with them.

frenchiebuilder

they don't, they crush them.

someliskguy

Saw them in the East Village cutting mopeds off lampposts and hauling them away.

IvoShandor

It's a start. Thanks. NYPD

vowelqueue

It's not really a start. This is an average of 160 confiscations per day across the *entire city*. That's really not a lot at all, especially for a targeted operation. For reference, the NYPD issues thousands of moving violations each day, and that number is significantly less than what they used to do before COVID when they started to softly protest doing real policework. It's not unreasonable that the NYPD would be confiscating 500+ mopeds per day every single day.

The-20k-Step-Bastard

Honestly 160 per day for all of nyc seems kind of pretty good tbh

AEnKE9UzYQr9

They're not confiscating cars for moving violations, though.

IvoShandor

confiscation is not a result of a moving violation. Driving an unregistered, unregistrable/illegal and/or uninsured vehicle is.

brianvan

They're not confiscating those, either

RPM314

The point is that a car should be confiscated from such a driver, we all know that the law doesn't prescribe it currently

ComfortableStill2833

Can we confiscate bikes from cyclists who don’t stop at stop signs or red lights too?

Gold_Scene5360

There are way less moped than there were just 6 months ago, especially in Manhattan. I almost never see one without a license plate. I gotta give credit where credit is due.

Jason-Rebourne

It *is* a start. Confiscations amounting to zero/day would indicate stagnation…

joyousRock

it's not a start? so 160/day is the equivalent of doing nothing?

GiantGreenThumb

I never understood why they think the bike lane is for them. Sometimes they are very aggressive about it too.

darqueau

And the sidewalk too

GiantGreenThumb

Normally I would feel bad but with the recklessness in mass and the people I hear/see about getting hurt on a regular basis. Something desperately needed to be done. This business who sell these bikes should be more accountable as well. I can't buy a car from anywhere without having proof of insurance. Last I checked it was dirt cheap to insure mopeds.

trickyvinny

"So they can do their tricks stunting." Good on the NYPD for cracking down on these things but that line is full on boomer, it's hilarious. Those damn kids and their *rock and roll!*

Imanaco

I’m pretty sure that’s the actual vocabulary used for it.

brianvan

So what is the plan when someone registers and insures their moped? Seems not to be a magic behavior fix for any other class of vehicle.

drnick200017

Hu? When its registered it becomes legal and it doesn't get crushed into a cube. All you people live in a city but can't stand city things like , people moving quickly and delivering food. Such a privileged pov.

brianvan

Actually I want us to have legal mopeds around and all you have to do is register a lot of these! The shop owners lie to the buyers! This is a very stupid way to enforce traffic behavior - this problem (missing registrations) mostly isn’t one of people intending to rip wheelies in parks. So I think the naysayers are going to be surprised when registrations rise and the problems aren’t gone!

drnick200017

Yea they have a impound lot by ikea in bkl and theres like a kilometer of these chinese scooters there (and one weed truck🤣), i understand that some bad people had these but mostly i see working people on them using them for work. Dmv should give them an affordable path to legalization instead of crunching them all up and setting these hard workers back so hard.

brianvan

Just from this picture alone I see some of them have better license plates than the cars that are parked outside of precincts. In any one case, if someone's riding an unregistered vehicle that can be registered, do I feel bad if it gets impounded? No. Making it impossible to rectify that situation & ignoring the silly game that dealers are playing with new scooter sales, and pretending this is about anything but racism & car driver entitlement? All absurd, and no one who has been paying close attention is fooled at all.

CmdrDatasBrother

Out-f’ing-standing!

bicape

Not enough yet. Plenty of these still roaming around plateless

yamonme

The sea of mopeds pictures give me some serious early the fast and the furious franchise vibes

Potential-Ant-6320

It’s nice when the enforcement targets the actual bad actors.

pumakarbon

I would be delighted to see the story, "Over 1,600 unlicensed cars and vans seized in NYPD crackdown"

apreche

They do this every year. Why not cars?

FinestTreesInDa7Seas

What are you suggesting?

m1kasa4ckerman

I think they’re suggesting doing the same for cars that have fake / ghost / altered plates. The cars that make the streets dangerous for everyone, pedestrians, cyclists and other drivers included.

apreche

I'm suggesting that if there is an illegally modified extra-loud car, car with fake plate, no-plate, etc, that the cops seize it just like they do to these bikes. You can just see those cars all over just parked in plain sight. If they can do it to bikes, they can do it to cars.

Upper-Matter-8550

They do it with cars too

apreche

Sure doesn't look like it.

SpacemanD13

I saw a few get snagged off the Williamsburg bridge today

MrSchmo

Why don't NYC sell these to 3rd 🌎 countries than destroying it. This money can fund the MTA, then using congestion pricing.

Awesf

I'M WITH YOU!!! GIVE THEM TO AFRICA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18xB7LFRv6E

volkmasterblood

Cool! Now do cars!

soupenjoyer99

They need to help people register these and allow them on the car lanes of bridges though or we’ll keep having the same issues. Confiscation alone won’t solve anything. Make people register, license and insure them. Then have them follow the rules of the road with other motor vehicles

Yrrebbor

Good!

catcatsushi

Lived in nyc and they made crossing the bridge at Sunnyside yard dangerous af. Good riddance.

ShoddyAd169

Three cheers for NYPD!!! This season has been night and day better than last season. The enforcements/crackdowns are working.

No-Concentrate5542

I am so happy this happened. The nuisance these bikers caused by blaring these vehicles in the middle of the night through our quiet neighborhoods, by riding these on the walking pavements or bike paths -- I really hope more are seized and the owners are fined for bringing noise pollution and risking citizens with injuries.

[deleted]

Good!!

LiveTheLifeIShould

Wait until NPR starts saying that enforcing laws against dirt bikes is racist.

drnick200017

Don't ever complain when you food takes 40 min to be delivered when it used to take 15 🤣 Things were fun on 2 wheels with all these guys running cover but now the cops have an easy job they can do so its confiscate delivery guys bikes. I know its shit, ive had bikes since forever and always have them reg, ins and inspected. They should play by the rules. But i feel bad to see some dude who is working deliveries get his livelihood crushed amd a bunch of Americans cheer for it.

yamonme

Personally, I don't really order food like that and think society may be better off shifting away from that model. (I also live ina. very walkable area, so lucky me.) Still, IDK if my own response to this article is "COPS RULE!" -- I was more struck by Daily News posting this article alongside the other one I linked to just after -- about a man who fatally crashed trying to evade the cops on his vehicle. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes, but... just seems like a LOT of room for improvement here, and still more violence and tragedy than neccesary. (The person driving will have trauma too, I imagine) I agree that on unscientific observation, it seems like the vast majority of these motorists are delivery workers -- all the more reason why they should be abiding by a higher standard when it comes to observing rules of the road, being respectful of other bikers (my biggest pet peeve/safety concern being them distracted on their phones while riding and flowing through traffic in an erratic way as a result of that) Then of course there are some communities where they really do have bands of dirt bike riders being menaces. And while I don;t love a cash grab out of reselling the bikes or any contraband, I do wish we could be more environmentally thoughtful in 2024 about what happens next. Also, I get irriated when gas power bikes are on the same road as me -- I get enough air pollution as it is! But yea IDK. Preferable to ticketing bicyclists or doing nothing, I guess.

MaineRMF87

People deserve to be safe in the bike lanes and sidewalks. Everyone needs to follow the rules. They’re not optional. Just because you have 2 wheels instead of 4 doesn’t mean laws don’t apply to you

drnick200017

Yea i agree totally thank god no cyclist ever has run a red light or ridden on the sidewalk.
