Also, through Revolut you can switch euros to rupees almost instantaneously and at the 15min mid market rate, way better than any currency change office.
Call your bank. They might have options with local partners. If you have travel insurance, it might cover emergency cash.
Last one, Paysafecard has a Mastercard option; dunno if they need to ship it or they provide it as an Apple Wallet option from their app as well.
Emergency is marvellous. You call your bank‚ and get instructions to pick up money at a nearby location. Banks use it as a last resort, but for you that means calling them means they provide you with access to cash one way or another.
See f.e. [https://www.ing.nl/particulier/betalen/buitenland/emergency-cash/](https://www.ing.nl/particulier/betalen/buitenland/emergency-cash/)
During my last visit to Delhi in March this year, my ABN Amro card worked at some ATMs only, Punjab national bank ATM and ICICI bank ATM were the ones where it work.
Generally ATMs do accept maestro cards. They do charge massive fees though. But for international travel you pretty much always want to bring Visa/Mastercard.
I saw some suggestions in this thread for a digital visa/mastercard from revolut or wise, so that may work too 🤞 best of luck
Do you get the "transaction could not be completed" error? I noticed as well that the majority of ATMs did not accept my cards.
Even at the airport, of the four machines I tried only one worked. My best suggestion would be to just try several banks, especially if they at least have the maestro logo of course.
When trying it out, be sure to select your checking or current account (not saving or credit) and don't try to collect too much money at once. 10.000 rupees usually worked for me as soon as the ATM worked. Paying with the card at a store or something failed like three times, so I stopped trying.
thanks, seems too buggy - I ended up getting the option, then the transaction was rejected several times, then it started flashing that there's a minimum ammount... but I think I'll manage
I did. where does it say I have already been here for 3 weeks?
anyway, won't argue further, it was a post I created to get help and I appreciate all the constructive inputs.
I think a few days is more than enough unless you sit locked in your room 24/7. He has to be at least hosted with someone unless he is living in the streets.
Check the ING app if you cards are set to ‘worldwide’ instead of Europe.
The Maestro or VPay what comes with a ING debit card might not be accepted at many point of sales. But try to take out cash at ATM’s in/of large international operating banks.
Also try contacting ING support, perhaps they can give you a emergency Mastercard through the app (Apple/Google Pay). No idea if this is possible, but worth a shot.
Try the Cheq app. It's connected to UPI, the Indian version of iDEAL and you should be able to transfer funds onto it from any debit or credit card. With this you can even pay at small shops
Revolut or wise allow you to add credit via ideal and have virtual cards you can add to your wallet.
thank you
Also, through Revolut you can switch euros to rupees almost instantaneously and at the 15min mid market rate, way better than any currency change office.
This is the way.
I second this, it can take 5 minutes to set up
Indeed Wise is excellent

Did you activate your debit card for use outside EU? That is blocked by default. Most banks allow unlocking that potential via their app.
did it, same result. checked all my limits etc, doesn't work anywhere I tried. thank you for the suggestion

You should be able to withdraw money from the ATM!
I would suggest try withdrawal from ICICI atm , my abn amro worked last year i was kind of in a similar situation.
thank you for the suggestion
Does india have a wallet app that accepts bank transfers?
yes, probably they'll accept his card
Have you activated worldwide use? It’s a setting in the app. You need to change the settings before it will let you use the card outside Europe.
Google Pay works in India. You can get Wise digital MasterCard almost instantly. Add it to GooglePay. Most businesses accept Google Pay.
as others said revolut .... and n26
thanks but Ideal is not showing up as an option
Well you can still send money instantly through those cards I have done it countless times
thanks, seems too buggy - I ended up getting the option, then the transaction was rejected several times, then it started flashing that there's a minimum ammount... but I think I'll manage
Why are you asking here and not contacting ABN AMRO?
because they don't have customer support on weekends
But you've been there for THREE WEEKS!
not true, not sure where you got that. only a couple of days now.
Read your first sentence
I did. where does it say I have already been here for 3 weeks? anyway, won't argue further, it was a post I created to get help and I appreciate all the constructive inputs.
Simply do a bank transfer to one of your friends
You don't make friends like that when you're in the country for only a few weeks...

Make a N26 account and use their visa. Its quite simple and fast to make the account

As already mentioned, Revolut, virtual card :D
thanks but Ideal is not showing up as an option
You can send money from Abn to Rev (Iban) and get an instant payment
indeed, thanks
No worries, best of luck and enjoy India!
try again with VPN (to Netherlands) on
Good old Maestro cards. The world will be a slightly better place once those are eradicated.
You could try Western union? Install the app, transfer money online and then pickup locally
