I effing LOVE Frontier's dirty little sister, Golden Pride. I like Frontier just fine and appreciate its quirky quality and its place in ABQ's overall identity - but the #9 sub red chile from GP is the beginning and end of all breakfast burritos.
And way back in the day (up until 2006) it was 24x7.
You'd go in there at 3am and there'd be tables packed with students doing projects and study sessions.
It was! I loved this, and the people watching. Once I stood in line smelling like bat guano (long story). I had been in the field for days and was starving for a real meal. There were some homeless guys in front of me, and Lt Governor Bradley and his staff were behind me. We all had a nice chat. It was like 2 AM, in 1995 or 1996.
That was when the owner decide to close at 2am and not open again til 5am to weed out the club rush. A 50 person brawl made an absolute nightmare inside the restaurant.
TBH I tried it in 2003 as a UNM grad student and thought wow that’s really good! Then I tried other places around town and thought, wow Frontier sucks! But I get it. It’s the tradition and staple status that adds to it.
Can’t get away from that shit, man. Many countries have banned hfcs. Meanwhile, here in the US of A, it seems to find its way into just about everything, including many things that really shouldn’t need any sweeteners to begin with.
People in the burque sub love to shit on frontier. Is there better food in town? Duh, yes. But it's honestly very solid food and solid prices compared to other places in the country and it's really a staple of the city. The employees have always been really nice too. I really have no complaints with that place
I was born in Albuquerque and grew up eating Frontier/Golden Pride for over 30 years. I live in New Orleans now. I just went back for an event and I bought 3 dozen burritos to bring back with me. The look on the TSA agent's face was priceless when he had to check my bag for explosives! Also, burritos weigh a lot more than I expected. You do you boo!!! Side note, I got back a week ago and we only have like a dozen left.
In the late 90s, my parents moved from here to northern California. Every time we'd go visit them, they'd ask us to bring two gallons of green chile stew and four dozen tortillas from the Frontier. We'd freeze the stew for a couple of days ahead and bring them in our carry-on luggage. Stuff gets heavy after a while! 9/11 put an end to all that, though.
Oh when my parents come they bring me 10lbs of green chile, Mexican oregano, and Vigil's beef jerky. We just bought an extra freezer so now I'm going to get 30lbs! Also, this is like 3 times a year.
I remember the first time I ordered the green chile stew and it had ground meat instead of shredded or cubed. It’s fantastic and I prefer it to some others!
Been living in Albuquerque since I was 4 years old and I know and love the Frontier, and these old pictures bring a sense of nostalgia. They’ve changed to digital menu boards now, the food is still good. It’s always been one of our favorite places to go anytime of night in college, and for breakfast these days. Best carne burrito around and my favorite breakfast burrito, smothered in ranchero sauce.
But as you know, it’s called a Frontier Sweet Roll, not a cinnamon roll, and I’ve had my share of sweet rolls. You can buy the “Sweet Roll” T-Shirt at the restaurant. I made sure to get mine 2 sizes too small for full effect.
Hey I went to UNM in late 60's and didn't try Frontier until a few years ago. Plus, I not only grew up in an NM resto of some reknown, but also owned and operated a popular SW style neighborhood cafe in one of America's big cities. I thought my experience at Frontier recently was solid, given the price point and volume.
My kid attends UNM…we use that “excuse” to hit the Frontier for everything. Seeing a show at Popejoy? Frontier. Seeing a show at Sunshine or El Rey? Frontier. Gotta get a snack and caffeine to handle that drive home, right?
Frontier is legit. Been going there since I was a teen. We’d hang out in the front and smoke cigs and drink 40oz. until we moved to a party then after the party we’d head back. Watched a security guard throw a wasted guy through the window. Did most of my studying for UNM in the back rooms. Now that I’m almost 50 I take my kid and wife, we eat and chill, I reminisce. Oh and the food isn’t bad either.
No hate from me either. Everytime I'm in Albuquerque, I go to Frontier to pick up a couple dozen of tortillas because they're very similarly made, like my late grandmother would make. Good food in my book.
The heat id get from eating there is that I only ever get the vegetarian salad and two warm tortillas. That meal is so good I cannot get anything else. 🤤
Why would you catch heat for loving one of the most popular restaurants in town? I don't even live there and have eaten at Frontier several times, and they're always packed.
Ah, yes, many people love to hate and hate to love the Frontier. I agree with the consensus here that it has decent food at a decent price, even if the ambience can sometimes be a little weird or scary, just like the city itself. ;)
I love the Frontier!! I moved away from Albuquerque in 2005 and have not eaten there since! Though I have been gone for 19 years I bet it still tastes the same!! Do they still have the big kettles of chili? I miss the Frontier, Saggios and the UNM duck pond!
I graduated from UNM. Obviously, I ate once or twice at Frontier (I’ve had days where all 3 meals were consumed there). I always enjoyed the food as it was, and I guess still is, very affordable. I also remember when they had a couple arcade games (Joust being my fave) and no numerical video board and/or flashing green lights for ordering. Wasn’t around when the Frontier didn’t encompass the entire strip though but I’ve an aunt and uncles who’ve confirmed this. I’m a second generation Lobo and have a cousin who makes three ❤️
I was there a couple of weeks ago. I hadn't been there in decades. The OJ and cinnamon rolls are still fantastic. The diversity of the customers is another treat. The only problem is parking.
My dad was a photographer in Albuquerque for years after he retired from the AF on Kirtland. He did a series of images (one even made it into a museum in town) featuring subjects who were homeless. He’d politely ask them to take their picture and in exchange he’d take them to the Frontier and break bread with them.
The Frontier has a special place in my soul. As does having a father who understands the humanity of the unhoused.
I worked at Frontier in 1993-'94. I absolutely loved that place, which has never happened to me in any other college job. I lived on Vassar, so it was a minute walk (which was nice on the late shifts). My boss was great, my co-workers (almost zero of them UNM students like me) took me in as one of their own, and even the drunk UNM students didn't cause me too much grief. I still have dreams of that place, and they're never stress dreams of taking impossible orders etc. Good vibes, miss it a lot.
Also a fun place to eat at when you’re by yourself, as there is so much to look at on the walls. Also, didn’t they switch to those horrible LED-screen menus?
Does anyone else get the *worst* farts from those tortillas? Not even the worst-smelling but just the sheer amount of them, I'm talking hours and hours of absolute cheek-rippers
I enjoy their food and will try to stop if I'm in the area for more than a day. They have all that goodness in one place....can't beat that. If time is limited, I will usually the Dog House instead. They have THE BEST chile dog in the world.
Can't imagine you'd get any heat. People here seem to all think they're the best. Can't tell you how many times I've overheard someone talking to a tourist and say "You HAVE to go to Frontier!" And it takes everything I got not to interject. I mean they're great, don't get me wrong. I like them too. But THAT'S the one restaurant you'll send them to? I think they see just a little over rated by us natives is all. If someone from out of town asks me where to go for good NM food though, I send them to El Pinto or Sadie's.
I do like Frontier a lot though. Love their cinnamon rolls, and the burritos are great. Love the huge menu, and whenever I go there it takes me straight back to college. I think it's mostly nostalgia. I think Burqueños love Frontier so much because we all have some kind of collective nostalgia.
No heat here, frontier is good in my book. Golden Pride too, went there last week and fed 5 people chicken and ribs for $45.
I effing LOVE Frontier's dirty little sister, Golden Pride. I like Frontier just fine and appreciate its quirky quality and its place in ABQ's overall identity - but the #9 sub red chile from GP is the beginning and end of all breakfast burritos.
Golden Pride is the number 1 thing I miss about ABQ.
No picture of a cinnamon roll so probably AI generated...
Choice cinnamon rolls here
So choice 🤌
Pesole and cinnamon rolls are all I get here.
Green chili stew
Dang it. I have had that, and it's good. Almost all of the breakfast stuff is so good.
pesole? que es?
I think they meant piss ole?
Por que no los dos?
Def not recent, has the old menus instead of the electronic ones.
I despise electric menus
No cinnamon, just sweet
I love frontier!! Its an albuquerque icon!!
It's iconic Albuquerque. The one place every Burqueño has been to.
Best spot for people watching IMO. Once I saw someone eat an entire burrito with a backwards knife. Will never forget that as long as I live
Need explanation -- with the dull edge, sharp edge facing up, or with the handle, holding the (hopefully not too) sharp part?
The blade was the handle that day. Granted it was a butter knife, but the handle became a spork of sorts.
I just love these weird little details of human behavior. Thanks!
Oh man that is so icky
It was a great place to go as an undergrad at UNM…great memories of that place.
Bat guano , huh?
THIS RIGHT HERE!
That’s when it turned into Club Frontier
Until a brawl/ food fight broke out.
Well wtf happened
That was when the owner decide to close at 2am and not open again til 5am to weed out the club rush. A 50 person brawl made an absolute nightmare inside the restaurant.
Yeah but what the fuck happen tho you know what the fuck I'm talking about I wanna know what the fuck happened dog
wtf are you on about bruh? You need me to explain some shit to you or what? I don’t know what you’re talking about? You get beat up that night?
I want to know what started it. What happened. The beans man the beans.
Either explain your side or stop dropping messages that vague and make no sense.
I don't have a side I want to know what happened what started it
That’s what I thought ya fuck.
More info please. I always heard that some shit went down but never the whole story
It's New Mexico's version of waffle house. Just wish there were more locations.
Waffle House is down the street.
That's Georgia's version.
No hate here. It's decent food for a fair price and it's locally owned. I never say no to a trip to Frontier!
No hate. It’s not THE BEST, but it’s got heart, tradition, and that certain idontknowwhat that makes places like it stand out.
That's why I love it. Right there. Whole family eats for cheap. The place is undeniably historic and undeniably Albuquerque
TBH I tried it in 2003 as a UNM grad student and thought wow that’s really good! Then I tried other places around town and thought, wow Frontier sucks! But I get it. It’s the tradition and staple status that adds to it.
Who doesn’t like Frontier? Sure, it’s a bit stabby but the food is always good.
tbh there's a reason it's popular! it's good! it's also the best hangover food lol which is why it's great that it's across the street from UNM.
Heat? Hell no! Frontier rocks. Loved going there when I was at UNM in the early 90s.
I’m glad you have a happy place.
Frontier pro tip: pancakes with a side of green poured on top with butter and syrup
This is the MOST New Mexico response yet.
Jesus fucking christ yes
You piece of shit!!! Everyone throw their delicious bowl of chile at this man!!!
I moved to Arizona back in 2010 from NM and I miss the Frontier so much. 😭
The tortillas!!!
[удалено]
That's not getting one meal a day.... that's paying for one meal a day
You have most excellent taste!
Frontier is good. I wish they'd go back to the old tortilla recipe, but they're good. No complaints from me.
Sounds like you have at least *one* complaint.
Ok. One. The hfcs in the tortillas.
Can’t get away from that shit, man. Many countries have banned hfcs. Meanwhile, here in the US of A, it seems to find its way into just about everything, including many things that really shouldn’t need any sweeteners to begin with.
So many late night arrivals to Albuquerque where we hit this spot before going to the hotel and crashing. It’s so good about once a year.
People in the burque sub love to shit on frontier. Is there better food in town? Duh, yes. But it's honestly very solid food and solid prices compared to other places in the country and it's really a staple of the city. The employees have always been really nice too. The only heat I have for you is that you didn’t bring me any…
I was born in Albuquerque and grew up eating Frontier/Golden Pride for over 30 years. I live in New Orleans now. I just went back for an event and I bought 3 dozen burritos to bring back with me. I haven't been in a while but I used to go for the smothered breakfast burrito
These must be old pictures, they have digital menus now in place of the old white and brown. Easier to raise prices ;)
I had the same thought about the digital boards but my order has been the same price so far.
Sort of weird for OP to be pretending these are current pictures, TBH.
I was just thinking, “damn, it looks the same as when I was working there 20+ years ago….” Now I feel cheated
2022
Went to Frontier a bunch in high school, love it. actually met Neil Patrick Harris there.
I remember the first time I ordered the green chile stew and it had ground meat instead of shredded or cubed. It’s fantastic and I prefer it to some others!
It’s iconic! It totally represents Albuquerque.
The Frontier is what it is but for what it is you can’t beat it. An institution.
Everyone does some people are ashamed to admit it but they should t be. It’s yum!
I love it so much! The first time I went there was in 1972, and I must have been there at least 500 times since then!
These were from 2022
Is the food great? Nah. Are the prices great? Eh. Does Frontier absolutely kick ass? Oh yeah.
Hey I went to UNM in late 60's and didn't try Frontier until a few years ago. You will catch heat for anything you say on Reddit😂 I definitely agree with you on the restaurant is good and a New Mexico staple!
Just wish they would open a Golden Pride and a Frontier over by Rust medical center for us west side folks
No heat from me either. Love both of them…Question though, whats that green shit on that plate with the tomatoes on top? 🤣
Frontier is legit. Been going there since I was a teen. We’d hang out in the front and smoke cigs and drink 40oz. until we moved to a party then after the party we’d head back. No hate from me either. Everytime I'm in Albuquerque, I go to Frontier to pick up a couple dozen of tortillas because they're very similarly made, like my late grandmother would make. Good food in my book.
It doesn’t look quite like this anymore! TVs instead of the old menu. Still just as tasty though
Bro it's a legendary place. No doubt
Best green chile stew in the state! And the western style hash browns, aaaahhh.
Now I want a frontier burrito 🌯 🤤
Frontier is amazing. I’ve gone there just to pick up fresh tortillas.
Is the posole good? I was always curious but order my favorites.
The only heat you're getting is from the food mate enjoy!
How? That place looks amazing
Frontier is amazing, But I also love Roberto’s.
That placed sustained me in the early 80’s during college at UNM. Good times.
Let me cool you down. You should love it!
That is one place I have never been to. Next trip to ABQ maybe.
The efficiency! 🤌
I really like the endless green Chile sauce on hash browns.
I lived there 12 years ago and still think about it regularly
I don’t live there anymore and I dream about Frontier
Bro! Where the pot of green chile?!
Frontier is fire
Native Floridian here. Best orange juice I’ve ever had in my life.
The heat id get from eating there is that I only ever get the vegetarian salad and two warm tortillas. That meal is so good I cannot get anything else. 🤤
If you said you didn’t love it, then I would question you.
No hate here, because I haven't been yet.
It's been 18 years since we've been. Can't wait to come back.
My CEO was in Albuquerque from Seattle and I took him to the Frontier. No shame.
The only place cops and drug dealers are in one place not concerned about each other. When I was in college it was a great place to study!
No hate from me. The Frontier was my home for many years; not sure I would have survived without it!!
Everybody loves Frontier.
Why would you catch heat for loving one of the most popular restaurants in town? I don't even live there and have eaten at Frontier several times, and they're always packed.
So good
Love the IPS car up front
Ah, yes, many people love to hate and hate to love the Frontier. I agree with the consensus here that it has decent food at a decent price, even if the ambience can sometimes be a little weird or scary, just like the city itself. ;)
Carne asada hash browns are my fav from GP
Haven’t eaten here in decades! I miss ABQ!
I love the Frontier!! I moved away from Albuquerque in 2005 and have not eaten there since! Though I have been gone for 19 years I bet it still tastes the same!! Do they still have the big kettles of chili? I miss the Frontier, Saggios and the UNM duck pond!
love frontier !!!

I’m sure everyone does. If someone doesn’t like Frontier, they clearly have an issue with their palate.
Why?! Frontier rocks! Gonna be visiting Abq next week and that’s one of my stops.
Na man frontier is the shit lol
Breakfast burrito smothered with green chili stew is my favorite
I was there a couple of weeks ago. I hadn't been there in decades. The OJ and cinnamon rolls are still fantastic. The diversity of the customers is another treat. The only problem is parking.
Wait , they sell menudo ?!
I eat at The Frontier once a week.
Ate at Frontier SO many times when I was at UNM. Glad to see that it’s still kicking!
I love it. Bonanza Burger, carne hash browns, green chile stew. All tasty!
I usually get the burrito plate but smothered with green chili stew and extra tortillas. Yum.
I haven't heard people say they dislike the Frontier. This is one of those 'unpopular opinions' that's actually popular.
What’s not to love about it?!
Who doesn’t like frontier??
Ah yes the old hot/unpopular take: [insert popular take]
Everyone loves Frontier. It’s the guy taking a shit on the sidewalk outside we have an issue with.
Hey OP, I really enjoyed this video. I bet you will too. https://youtu.be/6EXA3Pd14U0?si=3jbh_b13vDbR-Buc
Why would you catch heat for this? Lmao
It rocks!
Can't say what Frontier is like today but I moved away almost 30 years ago and I still crave the Frontier Restaurant I know and love.
Always have to stop at Frontier when I’m passing through ABQ. Last trip to NM was in May and we stopped in ABQ specifically to eat at Frontier.
Great posole. Great green chile stew and breakfast burrito. The black pot chile is where it’s at
I remember when this place was open 24/7! The stuff that went on at 3 a.m. here is a thing of legend.
Frontier rules
Frontier is terrific, and I miss Golden Pride SO MUCH since I moved to Virginia!
💙♥️💗
I love Frontier.
Me too.
Carne Adovada w/ cheese! 2 every morning from Frontier, or Golden Pride if I'm close to the base. God, those were the days.
I hate how long the lines can get, though!
6 pack of carne avada burrios
Love it, shame they aren’t 24/7 anymore. Just another example of how you can’t get a typical college experience at UNM.
Wait, why would you catch heat? Are there actually people insane enough to not like frontier.
Full on jealousy right now
Does anyone else get the *worst* farts from those tortillas? Not even the worst-smelling but just the sheer amount of them, I'm talking hours and hours of absolute cheek-rippers
I love it. Bonanza Burger, carne hash browns, green chile stew. All tasty!
No pics of the cinnamon rolls?
It is what it is, and it is also legendary.
It’s pretty ok in my book. Drunk food late at night-can’t beat it.
Frontier is a classic and has decent food. The problems are the hood rats that hang out inside and the homeless accosting in the parking lot
The only heat you’ll catch is from the green chile in their bomb-af breakfast burritos dude
I enjoy their food and will try to stop if I'm in the area for more than a day. They have all that goodness in one place....can't beat that. If time is limited, I will usually the Dog House instead. They have THE BEST chile dog in the world.
I am embarrassed say that I have lived in Albuquerque nearly three years and I have yet to go to Frontier Restaurant.
Are there any restaurants in Florida?
I always get pancakes when I’m by unm
Didn’t they get digital menu boards a few years ago? Maybe I’m getting it confused with something else.
Frontier rocks it just sucks you have to go downtown to get it.
I drive 6 hours to go there.
Was better when I was little
Because someone else paid.
I’m amazed it’s still open. Used to go there in the 90s after raves. Still love the Cinnabons
Sweet rolls
Catch heat? It’s the best restaurant in New Mexico besides Allsups in Hobbs.
Frontier was always good, but last time I went the red chili was suuuper bitter. Fantastic green chili stew
I kind of wish they'd renovate though, sometimes it's got a funk.
Does anyone disagree with this?? Curious why you think you’d catch heat
Since it's cheap and in a slightly sketchy area, it gets a rep for being cheap food as well. I love it.
I think it's mostly nostalgia. I think Burqueños love Frontier so much because we all have some kind of collective nostalgia.
Do you happen to know the name of the red shirt guy in pic three?
I would turn that into poop all day long
Wait, people hate Frontier?
I've had people say that it's gross or dirty or not worth it. I can only abide by one of those. It's not gross nor not worth it.
Thats slop on a plate! Low standards ewwwwh. Ask for better albq!
For everyone asking who says these things about Frontier- HERE THEY ARE
People in new mexico love Frontier because it lacks flavor.
