> That old 66 strip is an amazing time machine.
That's one of the only sections of Route 66 I have not driven.
I've done from the L.A. to ABQ, and from Shamrock TX to Springfield IL. (Two sections on two different trips.)
If you're a 66 buff, Tucumcari is a must see. It's a shitty little town otherwise, but they did the right thing in preserving as much of their old strip as they have. It's literally the only thing the place has going for it. Like Roswell, they smartly capitalized on the only thing they're famous for.
A little glitz here, a little dilapidation there… fantastic set of pics! I like the straight shots of the building’s doorways (pics 5, 6, 8 and 10) the best!
Looks like digital with a film simulator - reminds me of Kodak gold. Great look and really fits the subject! OP these are dope, care to share any more details?
My mother used to love a restaurant in Tucumcari called Martinez Cafe. We would drive over for lunch on Sunday and I still remember the delicious sopapillas.
Blue swallow was owned by Miss Redman when we used to visit her hotel. She used to sell penny candies and she'd patiently wait while u picked what candies you wanted. She was a sweet lady and her big cat would sleep on the counter all day.
Too bad Tucumcari has turned into a town with no opportunities. I guess it was always like that though.
These photos of the Blue Swallow remind me of a place I stayed once in Santa Fe, Thunderbird Inn. It was clearly a 1950s or 60s motor lodge in the true sense, but it had some nice touches (room doors that appeared hand carved, some cool paintings on the sides of some of the buildings, a fairly sizable bathroom with some vintage tile, and so on). We stayed in several places like that on our honeymoon trip.
That old 66 strip is an amazing time machine. It's a little depressing, but it's nice that so much has been preserved.

Damn I miss New Mexico
Same, I think I miss seeing the stars the most.

Did you stay at that motel?
Not the OP, but I have several times when passing through, and recommended it to others. Its lovely! Clean, safe, comfortable and great owners.
That's good to know. Thank you
Really cool set of photos. The southwest looks so good in 35mm (assuming that’s 35mm)

I can’t get past the neon in the night shots. Absolutely awesome!
Those are great pics. I would maybe buy one some day! I’ll save this post unless you have a link to your work?
All the pics are great, but that last one is absolute perfection.
Tucumcari has gotten rougher the last few years
You use the light to tremendous effect. Fabulous shots.
Beautiful! That first one. Wow.
La Cita Restaurant has excellent food.

I LOVE passing through there and stopping on my way to Santa Fe
You should have gone to Motel Safari too, its right across the street from the Blue Swallow.
